"We'll start with a moderate to light aerobatics and we're gonna get this jet up in the air." Jon, you had me on the edge my seat for that pre-takeoff aerobatic routine.
I have an NX6 transmitter and I believe I would not have enough channels for reverse thrust on the 90? I know there's a 7th channel but with no pluggable port. Looking at the 90 manual, port: 1 is throttle 2 is alieron 3 is elevator 4 is rudder 5 is retracts and 6 is flaps.
The 7th channel should be assignable to the thrust reverse channel which isn't a physical port. Chat with us on Discord about it and it'll be easier to understand: bit.ly/TBRCDiscord
You do a great job landing - fly the plane down to the runway - just like a real high-performance aircraft. Many guys stall the aircraft during landing which is a common procedure on low performance aircraft. (I learned that when training to fly real airplanes - Cessna's and Piper's. When I transitioned to high performance aircraft, I was taught to fly the airplane down to the runway.) I wish Horizon Hobby would modify the airfoil to give these Vipers a more gentle stall characteristic...
Very late in the piece but thankyou for your vids on the Viper 90mm. My next purchase when they get back in stock. I have an LX MiG-29 twin 70mm EDF with 3d thrust vectoring that does high alpha with ease... though the ailerons are mixed with the Tailerons/elevators and makes the mig a doddle to fly.. add the 3d TV and it's almost impossible to lose. Whole thing is a lifting body with lots of area. Trying high alpha on the Viper is a brave move with something that does stall quite violently but again practice makes perfect (ish) Thank you again for cementing my decision to get the bigger Viper!
Absolutely - or pick one up on AliExpress by searching for the FMS Viper 90mm. The paint scheme looks better and you'll find spare parts on AliE without backorder issues. You can also high alpha this jet, contrary to public opinion!
There's not much of a comparison. The F-16 isn't as fast or as agile as the 90 Viper. It's also not as capable of alpha passes. It does excel in scale appearance though. I prefer the Viper 90 - it's really just one of the best jets on the market right now.
I recently purchased a viper V2 70mm and I couldn't get it to stall with flaps, crow and full elevator into the wind. Although, my throws are less than the recommended by the manual it still has a good roll rate. Maybe, you guys have too high a rates for the 70 mm and this is what's causing it to stall. Great video very helpful and entertaining.
Not having enough travel is bad in its own way. Not being able to stall a model means you have very limited control authority and can easily crash into obstacles that you won't be able to avoid.
@@TwoBrosRC I've never personally had a situation where I crashed into something caused by too little control, usually most people crash because of over control in my 42 years of experience flying RC. Something you might want to inform pilots in your videos is that the plane will stall with the recommended control throws but you the pilot could reduce the control throws and possibly avoid stalling the aircraft. Just a thought.
I have both of these jets. I would ad that in thier stock configuration neither stall that easy. But I have them both set up by the book. I have to really be in a bad spot to get any kinda stall. But compared to military edf jets these two jets are ultra forgiving. To highlight that fact . I've only been flying rc for 5 months.
They both stall rather easily if airspeed drops in a banked turn where elevator is applied. The 70 much more so than the 90. That's one reason why we recommend it as a trainer jet. It teaches stall recovery that other beginner jets won't.
@@TwoBrosRC well yeah, but that is just basic airmenship 101, if you take enough energy out of a apprentice and jerk the stick back. it will easily stall. I am speaking more to being with in a stable flight envelope. which is what I meant by being in a bad spot. Low slow and aggressive inputs have ended more than a few GA pilots on final approaches and traffic pattern stalls. Bringing my GA experience to RC not only saves my life in a real airplane but has saved my RC airplanes on the ground. ;)
@@ladyhawk7408 It's unfortunately not basic airmanship because many RC pilots don't understand what we just mentioned. It's basic airmanship for *you* because you've got full scale experience. A lot of RC pilots don't know much more about aircraft other than "it goes fast so it must fly" - the level of aerodynamic understanding is sorely lacking. Apologies if it came off like we were talking down to you at all.
@@TwoBrosRC cheers just discovered your channel lots of good info well done. You should grab one of Eachine f-18 and f-16 from Bangood. They are cheap but lots of fun on 4s :)
Love ur videos guys, just bought my first 6s viper jet, also have the habu, 4s, how would u recommend I set up the viper, just according to the manual? Or some need to do setup? Tia.
Manual recommendations are great for CG on this jet, but we'd recommend maxing out travels (150% rates) and using innermost control horn holes on the surfaces to make the jet more responsive, especially during landings.
Dude I just noticed why your channel name is the way it is. 😂 dude you had me fooled. Is Jon without the H. 😂 funny 😄 ass hell. Thanks 🙏 for sharing yet another great flight and commentary brother Jon without the H. 😂. God bless and stay safe.
Hi Jon, what would you recommend as ideal progression towards the 90mm viper? I am getting comfortable with my 70mm eflite f16, I assume the 90mm viper is more challenging? Thx
It's challenging but not incredibly so. I'd start with the Viper 70 and work your way up to the 90 after getting used to the stall tendencies and landing well more often than not.
Awesome I prefer the affordable route and 70 is great plus it's lighter so it isn't that bad flyng wise and landing is the only issue the gears but just need to cone in pitch a bit of high alpha not too high
@@TwoBrosRC looking forward to it! I've been flying my Viper 70 after swapping out the retracts for the FMS Avanti 70 mm, with Dubro low bounce tires. It makes a big difference on landing. I don't find it has a high roll rate, but maybe I've got too much Expo set (30% on high rates)
Dubro offers a few sizes of their 'mechanical' nose wheels that have a brake. U can add a servo, OR set it up a couple of different ways. But, only place ive ever seen it was on tower hobbies. Maybe something to check out. Horizon Hobby dont stock em.
I haven't fudged with the CG much - honestly there isn't much you can do besides adding weight under the rudder to get it to balance neutral, and I didn't want to add weight because it'll reduce the jet's ability to perform some of the maneuvers on display here. The furthest point of recommended CG in the manual is about where I balance it. 6k packs get shoved all the way to the back, same with 5200 packs. If I'm planning alpha, though, it flies with less wing rocking if the 5200 pack is moved to the center of the middle battery strap.
True. You can buy any jet you want. AS3X/SAFE doesn't give you skills, though, so you may not succeed in flying something that's outside of your skill level.

@@TwoBrosRC Just the way the phrase parsed. Aerobatics first, then takeoff. Struck me funny even if it wasn't what you meant.

I will say that was one hell of a review you can definitely tell you love your vipers
then again so do I
They're amazing airframes. I'm happy I learned jet behavior on the Viper 70, but the 90 just beats it in every way that matters.

IX20SE, actually! It's an IX radio specific feature as it can use Android to produce text to speech. Anything we've written will be spoken.

Viper 90, not even a contest.
Another great video! Would you put the Viper 90mm motor on a freewing T-45 90mm for a lighter and more powerful combo?
Absolutely. I just don't see myself getting the T-45 because it uses elevator tips instead of full moving stabilators.
Talk about a radio setup in the next video? I am really interested

True. You can buy any jet you want. AS3X/SAFE doesn't give you skills, though, so you may not succeed in flying something that's outside of your skill level.
@TwoBrosRC the mindset here is I can buy a "non beginner jet" and learn to fly it with safe/as3x and when I get comfortable turn it off
