    Blondie, as a Chinese from Southern China, I also dislike the taste of 豌豆黃 though it looks beautiful. And please do not feel offended when Chinese people ask you if you have a boyfriend, 對象 coz when Chinese people do this , it means they like you and hope you can become one of our family group. Family group is not confined to blood line or ethnicity alone. Blondie is about a window for the world to understand China and hopefully for China to look at the world. In a world so divided, Blondie serves as a bridge for a wider family group we call humanity. I am glad to belong to this family too.

    There is another salty version of wandou huang that has no grainy taste due to the removal of pea fiber remains, which was only found in a small town in Jiangsu. That is one of my favourite as it still taste pea but as smoothy as any starch jelly. During the Covid-19 lock down I cracked the cooking procedure the salty smoothy type of wandou huang which taste amazing.

      Dear Blondie, Hui minority are mostly muslims, (from watching many videos on Hui culture) n back in the old days, even in SEASIAN countries, the locals made peas for desserts by adding sugar, or as a savoury dish. This pea dish is Traditional n l love anything made from peas n beans n nothing too sugary sweet(no white sugar, but brown palm sugar or gula melaka added, would be a healthier substitute). Oh how l missed all the kueh-kuehs in my Singapore, Msia n Indonesia. There are savoury n sweet dessert varieties in SE Asian countries. This brings back memories of local kueh-kuehs in Singapore, Msia n Indonesia. These peas cakes/kueh kueh are loaded with proteins for those who are vegetarian or on religious grounds! Love that millet gruel with sesame sauce, Blondie, with all due respect, you should have stir n mixed the sauce into the millet gruel n eat it The whole idea of eating that millet gruel(hope its 100% millet n no cornstarch added to it), is to mix the sauce(salty sesame sauce, great combination to the millet gruel) in it n eat it, otherwise you dont get the proper taste! I know l would love it. Millet is such a nutrient-rich food, n a warm hearty-filled-dish for hot n humid Beijing(but in summer, serve cool or chilled would be delicious n refreshing/dessert like)n sesame contains Vit E. I hope you didnt waste all that nutritious food! I guessed each has her/his own preference n taste. I think your mom would love the millet gruel too!
      Anyway, l have always enjoy your lovely, fun, educational n interesting video. Looking forward to more! Thank you.

      To me, a good wan dou Huang has the mouth feel of lotus paste you get in mooncakes. If it is too grainy, it's not a great quality. I love it though, I think the subtle sweetness and a slight almost nutty flavour gives it a unique experience. Sadly can't get it atm as outside China :(

      @@justinliu5061 Are you not asian? Do you have no pride? Do you like watching your girlfriend be with other men?
      Edit: Liu I see you've deleted even your replies. I'll repeat what Malcom X once asked: who taught you to hate the color of your own skin to the point of not wanting to associate with your own people? It's important not to confuse circumstance with "nature". If you get robbed for all your money, you're poor because of circumstance and not because you're naturally inferior. A man who lifts weights and diets correctly is stronger than the person who doesn't even try, because of circumstance and not because of nature. If a person teaches their own kids that they will never as good by nature, then that sets them up for failure already and causes a cycle.
      The west has had centuries of wealth from looting the world including Asian countries, and they used that wealth to improve themselves and sell their story with all their media and movies.
      Don't think about current circumstances, think about the potential of Asians. Don't buy into the racist idea that Asians are inferior. You don't need the respect from others who look down on you. Improve yourself and get better than them, and respect yourself.

    For Wan Dou Huang, you need to try the one from Fang Shan (仿膳)inside Bei Hai Gong Yuan. Give it one last chance. It's not supposed to be very grainy. Traditionally, this needs to be sifted through many times to achieve the silky smooth texture. It's labour intensive, so it's only served to the royal family. Now days most places don't follow the traditional steps in order to cut down the cost. Even Fang Shan doesn't follow the traditional recipe to the dot, but that's one place should still make it better than most other places since this types of snacks are what this restaurant is known for. That's very unfortunate...

    Huguosi is a street full of memory for me. It literally where I grew up and spent most of my childhood at. There was a place for baodur right across the street from huguosi snack but closed down a couple years ago when I left China to US for schools. Before it went out of business, my family usually go together a couple times a year. I never appreciated the cooking there before knowing it was gone. In my opinion It is one of the best restaurant for Baodur in Beijing based on my sentimental judgement.

    The pea thing we have in the UK specifically in the North East. It's called pease pudding and you usually have it with ham.
    The green tripe is only fed to dogs. You can't even process it in the same facility as meat used for human consumption.

  • @Jennie-mw2cl
    @Jennie-mw2cl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Tripe is the stomach, not the intestines... those are further down. As a white American woman, I'd tell other Westerners to not knock it before they try it. Both tripe AND intestines are tasty. I really like the softer varieties of tripe in either a ginger garlic sauce, spicy sauce, or black bean sauce. You really can't go wrong. The texture can be a little odd if you aren't used to it, but the flavor is amazing.

    打卤面 isn't always cold fried noodles, they’re boiled noodles like regular noodles. And the sauce is what makes them 打卤-its a glutinous sauce with 木耳 and bamboo shoot and other stuff. Really delicious. The same noodles can be served w a black-brown sauce and pork chunks and it’s 杂酱面 which is where korean jajangmian comes from, basically the same product. Or at my house we do it with sliced cucumber and boiled cabbage & soybeans w balsamic vinegar for that beautiful color (i guess that’s the american in me haha but rice vinegar would work for a similar flavor) and you can have garlic smashed and pour vinegar into it, and then dip your noodles in that as well. Or some mix of all three. Very delicious. I think the translation you have is a bit misleading though!
