malikeths armor having cheap stomach protection might have to do with the fact maliketh himself is always bent on his fours usually.
He's a somewhat aged armor expert for humans not a gamer. Give em a chance
@@AdamMerlinNobody's upset
@@deepism Neither am I. Kinda wish he commented on Vargram's armor tho
Like an actual... wolf/dog: Very strong back and sides and very flexible but unprotected abdomen which is not exposed anyway. allows him to high mobility and speed while it also offers protection to his exposed body.
@@setsunaes yup same also w the bloodhound armor.
I love how a bunch of the parts that made certain areas weak made sense with their origins. Namely Maliketh and the Bloodhound sets, since their animalistic stances and movements require that flexibility.
not just flexibility, but that region would be down towards the ground and extremely hard to hit so doesn't need much protection.
Notice his back plate has a shit load of thick armor stacked on each other, you def wouldn’t be getting through at that part of the armor for sure
and it makes sense Bloodhounds has some mismatching of parts, they seem to stay long in the field and probably don't have the faculty to repair it themselves, presuming they are beastmen like from Azula.
Just pointing out he does point out that the bloodhound set makes more sense if the fighter hasa more animal stance
The bloodhound has the greaves covering the back of the calves as they fight on all fours. Very cool.
I like when a history expert can go "yeah this armor wouldn't work. But it's sick, so 8/10." Especially when they speculate on the character that wore the armor and get close to the mark, shows the quality of the design language.
Favorite type of review aha
Where did he say that?
I saw 2 of these videos but it was about weapons, the other one was talking about how twinblades are unusable and the other ones favorite weapon is ghizas wheel💀
@@vsolcarvhe was spot on with the twin armor and he was right about the bloodhound armor
Yup, definitely.
The coolest part about this was that he actually seemed to have knowledge of the game!
@SUBJECT M01 though Blaidd is a half-wolf, the headpiece from his ste that lets the player look like him is in fact a severed wolf's head. You'll also notice that the model on screen is not Blaidd himself, but the player. As he is referring to the set and not the character, the armor expert is indeed correct and you, in your eagerness to get a cheap own, overlooked a crucial detail.
@SUBJECT M01 I may have been a bit unfairly harsh. It's been a bad day and I was feeling defensive. My point still stands, but I recognize you weren't trying to tear anyone down. Apologies.
@SUBJECT M01 nah, you're all good. We should all be allowed to make silly mistakes now and again without people coming down hard on us.
this is the friendliest reply chain on the platform wtf
theres way to much positivity here what the fuck is going on
I love how he basically told you the lore of the crucibel knights, by describing their armour as melding two things together of european and japanese armour, when they are off age where things weren't as seperate but more one whole thing. Super cool
It really shows how good from’s design language is
i mean, its in the name, crucible - things get melted together in there. In german they are called "Schmelztiegelritter"
this video makes me aprreciate all the armor i never wore more than i thought =)
24:33 I love how committed the person getting the footage for this is.
"It's a barrel helm."
*Ah of course, I'll have the player character wearing just the helm amidst a bunch of barrels!*
Stellar work.
" Basedly Tarnished... "
There was a crucible ace helm in that shot? All I saw were barrels
xDDD didnt even notice
an my autistic self was asking why he is standing next to a bunch of barrels lol
this is unironically the best this type of video i have seen
the ingame footage was above and beyond good, the whole structure of the video is amazing, the subject matters were represented perfectly and everything else that has to do with the video is really good too
+1
very true, it wasn't just screenshots. production quality is high from this channel, it would seem.
I appreciate the fact that he had at least SOME knowledge of the material being discussed and showed some respect for it. As much as I enjoy more hobbyist channels like Skalligrim, the at times insulting lack of knowledge is absurd. At least read the Wikipedia page and a synopsis.
shout out to the historical references and images that went in too. like that tiny painting of a knight with a winged helm from some page in a manuscript. appreciate the attention to detail
Yeah it's significantly better than any other experts react to video game out there
This is probably the best "historian reacts" videos I've seen. The guy talking is very articulate, informative, and funny which is an extra 10 points.
ALSO! Gameplay and camera work was amazing
Appreciate that

Reminds me of Jonathan, who Gamespot likes to get for their Firearms Expert Reacts videos. He's the same way, which made this video a treat to watch. Except he's more of a gamer, so he's really good at reasoning abnormal gun design, though Dr. Forgeng here did an excellent job as well.

Just noticed the shinguards on the Bloodhound set are turned around. It makes sense for the Bloodhound Knights because they are on all fours, so it protects the exposed calf. Obviously once you get it, keeping it backwards is kinda dumb, but that is clearly an oversight by the developers.
I have a Bloodhound Knight build and one thing that makes it look better is crouching
They’re also shaped to the back of the calf so turning them around wouldn’t really make sense either, they wouldn’t fit the shin properly
@@connorwilcox146 knee would be exposed, but they should function still. It's not like they'd be more curved or anything. It's literally a shinguard just turned 180.
A rando that got resurrected and was told to go kill some shit on a flying horse is highly unlikely to understand the implications of their armor
@@glorytoukraine5524 My understanding was that the Tarnished are descendants of Godfrey that have lived, fought, and died on other worlds. After death they are recalled and resurrected in the Lands Between rather than go to their "normal destination", due to their special relation to grace and Marika.
Man, I've watched a number of these 'expert reacts' type videos in the past and I just have to say, this is up there with the greats.
The presentation, the stylized introduction to each set, and the commentary all seem focused and well put together.
Others have mentioned this already, but it is definitely true, absolutely a hidden gem of a channel and I hope the algorithm picks you up because I feel a lot of people would agree.
One of the few experts who are actually an expert
Johnathan Ferguson is up there for arms and armor as well, and Cam and Izzy for modern military are fun to watch

I agree. This is great, really impressive.
I really dig that the expert pronounces all the characters' names correctly. I have the impression that he's played the game, and that's awesome even if he actually hasn't.
Not much of a gamer thing. He works at a museum, so he has an obligation to know how stuff is pronounced, and I appreciate that as someone who is also rather OCD about the pronunciations of names, since so many people, especially a lot of gamers, just don't do them right.
It really irks me that people STILL mispronounce Blaidd's name, even though it's said properly several times throughout the game...
@@the_furry_inside_your_walls639Yeah, his name is said soooo often that theres no excuse if youve played
Absurdly underrated channel
When i saw the views and subscribers i couldn't believe it, a really high quality video, take me a sub for sure
I grew up going to the Higgins Armory as often as I could convince my parents to take me. Really cool to see you talking about this game I love so much.
I’ll make sure Dr. Forgeng sees this. Very wholesome, thank you for watching : )
Just like the hound knight set, maliketh's armor is made for a mostly quadruped creature. And thus the belly is not easily hit whilst other areas are more vulnerable and thus better protected.
Yeah he mentioned that
@@waterbender6288not for Maliketh
Very great video and I love how Dr. Forgeng was able to criticize the armor while still recognizing the things the sets exceed at. I also particularly appreciate the effort put into understanding the context of the armor before reviewing it.
Regarding the bloodhound armor, the bloodhounds act feral like a beast and they fight in a cuadrupedal posture so the neck and calves dont get exposed but the back does. That posture fixes the neck problem and it makes the helmet aerodynamic and able to deflect foward slashes.
So the fantasy element kinda fixes the irl problems the armor has.
Tbf the neck still doe get a little exposed compared to the calves, so his critique of the neck protection at tye very least is not out of this world.
I do agree that in-context it is a much better set than what was criticized, but at the same time we have to reason: if we're thinking about it as a set for a regular knight(tarnished's version), it's barely functional, if the bloodhound's, while definitely on the cheaper side of what it should be given the bloodhounds reputation, a far better suited armor for them.
So for social gatherings the Tarnish would be using the magical Carian Armor but for expected combat and field use they would be using the Crucible Axe Knight Armor and Blaidd's armor depending on the environment with the Haligtree Armor as a backup.
Imagine Gideon telling him "yeah now you can go see the two fingers" and th tarnished going all the way to raya lucaria just to get the fancy armor set for the occasion of meeting the two fingers and then...
They're two literal fingers.
@@iota-09 hey at least the Tarnish would be dressed for the occasion. Imagine meeting such an important entity in sloppy, slaped together armor. That just wouldn't do.
Excellent takeaway, you’re exactly right
Ironically enough the Vagabond Knight Set is also up there; it's lighter and more open design would be nice for travelling long distances.
This guy was great. I love that he shows immense respect for the players, the design team, and the game itself. You could just feel his love and compassion for his craft and almost sense his excitement for seeing an amazing game taking so much inspiration from history.
One of the best expert reacts videos i've seen at least for the souls series, props to dr.forgeng and to jahmez for offering the correct information to address the critiques as well as up-close footage.
Thanks iota, glad I didn't disappoint. Can't wait to make the next souls video
The information given is obviously priceless, but I have to really commend the style and editing in the video. You usually don't get something that feels this scholarly adapted this well to the TH-cam format. Feels like it's usually one or the other. Bravo.
I remember going to the Higgins Armory Building with my middle school class and getting to see a demonstration of the zweihander being used in a full suit of armor. It's super cool that somehow it's now come back in the form of the collection's curator breaking down armor from one of my favorite games!
One of the best Elden Ring videos. Period. The knowledge and perspective into The Tarnished life and experiences was the cherry on top. A wonderful video.
Wow, thank you!
1:50 in & its one of the best elden ring videos out , awesome real world comparisons
I am sure that someone else has already commented this, but the scrawny horse (Leonard) doesn't actually carry all of that weight. Radahn learned gravity manipulation so that he could ride on Leonard without hurting him.
Great video that judges armors based on actual use in the actual setting and real life while also taking into account aesthetical charm and other factors that could have impacted the design decision. You've earned a subscriber!
Glad to have you around Rogat : )
Maliketh's armor focused on his bestial agility. He could protect his belly area well enough, be it staying on all fours or dodging - meanwhile anything less flexible would restrict his ability to contort and twist his torso nearly 180 degrees as he commonly does. And the spiked elements are more likely to disarm the opponent than lead to injury. With his speed, you're unlikely to land a precise thrust, and likely to get the sword caught between the plates and ripped out of your hands as his full body momentum opposes your hands strength. Bad armor for a human, great for a sleek beast.
The reason Carian knight armor has one 1 steel gauntlet on the left hand is because it is mainly used by Carian spellblades who wield their staff in the left hand. their right hand usually is holding the Carian knight sword (which has a attack that blocks and then strikes) which is their main close quarters weapon. So while their right hand is slashing and stabbing the left more vulnerable hand is protected.
Lovely and informative video with one small quibble; Blaidd *The Half Wolf* is not "wearing" a wolf's head. That is in actual fact his real head. The helm worn by the tarnished was fashioned for an impostor seeking to assassinate Lady Rani, whom he serves.
I’ve always loved the Carian Knight armor but seeing it up close like that really gives you a whole new appreciation for the ornate detail

This channel is one of the coolest discoveries this year! You really show how studious and deliberate FromSoft is with their armor designs. Very cool
It would be really amazing watch a playthrough of the whole game with Dr. Forgeng analyzing the architecture and equipment and how they fit with the lore pointing the real history and myths inspirations
Fun thing is Leonard (which is radahns horse) doesn’t carry radahn. Radahn learned gravity magic for 2 reasons 1 to arrrest the stars (which really hurt his mother and her ilk) and 2 so, he could keep his scrawny yet brave horse. Radahn is the same as malena their both stagnation personified 1 wants to break away from it and radahn refuses to change. Even being rotted and mind gone he still is arresting the stars on behalf of the golden order and his father. Really cool quote from him is “I was a champions cub. Now I’m the lord of the battlefields lion.” Which shows his tremendous respect for Godfrey. That’s the reason he has the lions on his armor since Godfrey took the beast regent serosh and that’s sort of his sigil. Elden Ring has so many tiny details
As a Massachusetts resident, I miss the old Higgins Armory museum, where all the exhibits were on display in a distinctive L-shaped room inspired by the great hall of a medieval castle, with banners and stained glass. I'm glad the exhibits found a new home in the Worcester Art museum, but I'll miss the feel of the old museum.
Amazing B-roll footage and your integrity in the knowledge of the game was surprising. Did not expect your insight into what the 'Tarnished' would be seen using, as little emphasis was placed on that aspect of the character in the game and it has actually enhanced how I see armor as a whole in Elden Ring. Well met. :)
This honestly is one of my favorite videos in the last year. PLEASE have Dr. Jeffrey Forgeng sit down and talk about more Soulsborne armour. Great video, informative points and very fitting editing!
Fantastic editing. Great clips that pertain to the topic at hand. The host was very knowledgeable and well spoken. U can tell he's a fan of the game. You earned a sub can't wait to see more from u
Awesome video, but I’m shocked that there was no Banished Knight!
Blaidd helmet isn't part of the set actually.
Blaidd is literally a wolf-human of some sort, and this "helmet" is just an assassin that tried to mimick his head.
But the name and description of the helmet make it clear it isn't part of the armor set.
And Blaidd just has no helmet, has it would be hard to make one for his strange wolf shaped head
But the video and the analysis are great !
Unlike most expert reactions on elden ring this guy seems to actually have looked in depth at the pieces in question, looking at ingame models instead of just the image on the wiki or something. Great thoroughness
Hearing an expert not immediately trash all over video game stuff and having some suspension of disbelief is nice to hear
I absolutely love the trend of experts reacting to pop culture. It's so cool to get a glimpse into their world as they get a glimpse into ours.
See you in the Lands Between, doc!
should've done veteran's armor, did any of you guys realize in-game that the gauntlet on the right is mitted, and the left is more like a finger gauntlet? it's a very small detail, and im sure some other armors might also have this too, but thinking about it more, it's a very overlooked feature that i haven't see anyone else comment about. (and by "i haven't seen anyone else comment about" i meant i just looked at like, the first 100 replies and called it a day, hope i was right)
edit: underrated channel, like and subscription added
Very true!
A viking armoured or anglo saxon riding a studio ghibli princess mononoke horned horse using a piece of the iron thrown sword slab is such a concept
Radahn Set only has sandals because Radahn doesn't have feet (just noticed it),
Maliketh's armor has weak chest protection because he walks on all fours with his chest to the ground,
Bloodhound armor has plate covering the "back" of the lower legs,
Haligtree Knight helmets are tall and narrow because the knights themselves have slightly elongated necks and arms (seems to be a common side-effect from being near the Erdtree).
Maliketh's armor dose make sense when you consider he's not really bipedal. When you're fighting on all fours, use flexible chain and scales underneath, and plate mail on the back. Someone pointed out that the Bloodhound Knights have the armor on their leg joints reversed. Same situation here.
“It’s a bit too fancy” said no Tarnished ever. These games are called fashionsoul for a reason.
Elden Bling.
The little gameplay segments were great and found myself laughing at a lot of them. Great video capture to go along with this man's tremendous expertise
I think that weak torso in maliketh's armor is a symbol of dogs soft belly weak spot. And I love that.
Really neat to get these sort of insights, I think the editing was done pretty well too especially with the little blurbs explaining some things he would mention
If you haven't, will there be a weapons video?
There will be a weapons video for shadow of the erdtree : )
Forgeng also translated one of the most widely used German treatises on longsword fencing, didn't expect him to pop up
At last, some actually good content
Thank you Ignis : )
I'm sure someone has already pointed it out but for the Crucible Axe armor the decorative wings on the helmet and elbow protection are meant to represent the double-sided axe that the lord to which the Crucible Knights are sworn to wields
Blaidd isn't wearing a helmet. That's just his head, poor guy.
one of the better videos of this type i haves seen, the footage made me chuckle here n there you can tell whoever they got to do it had fun
also the expert had a respect for the game and didn't rip into it but rated everything on his own preference which was refreshing.
Woah, 25 minutes of video went by in a blink! Really enjoyed your view on the armor sets and you seemed to have enjoyed it too which made it doubly fun.
What a wholesome and knowledgeable individual. Thank you for the video.
One note about Radahn's horse (whose name is Leonard): one of the reasons that Radahn learned how to use gravity magic was so that he could continue to ride one his trusty steed without crushing him. One of my favorite lore tidbits in Elden Ring.
This was facinating to watch! I wish he covered Loretta's armor. My favorite in the game.
I'm curious as to how you presented the armours to Dr Forgeng, did you show him the footage displayed while he was talking about each set or did you just share screenshots?
Super stoked to see a video on TH-cam embracing videogame culture from a smaller city in my state. Higgins armory museum is/was an amazing place to check out when I was younger. Thanks for the historical feedback, Dr. Jeff
Would love a part 2 with Banished Knight, vagabond and kaiden set
please do a part 2 to this video i loved it!
i would love to see a review of some of the starting armor, like the vagabond and confessor sets. i would also love to see a review of the banished knight set, hoslows set and the kaiden set
you deserve a subscribe my guy
The factor about the Carian Knight set is twofold:
They're the literal guards/elite soldiers of royalty, so yeah that shit is gonna be fancy.
But they're also wizards, and the gemstones (glintstones for the game name) would both likely help with sorcery as well as warding from it.
So realistically it's just a super fancy ceremonial set, but in the game's lore it makes total sense.
The synthesis of professionalism and nerdiness. Awesome!
I would love another video continuing the series with him! Great concept and really well executed, Dr Forgeng's descriptions are interesting
Great video! Love the footage used too!
For anyone interested, the documentary they pulled the footage of the gladiator helmet (14:15) is from is called Meet the Romans with Mary Beard! Terrific documentary, highly recommend
One thing I dont really see mentioned is with the nights Cavalry armor is it was quite literally cavalry armor. the groin being exposed would make sense considering that those knights would primarily fight on horseback and would get a natural protection from the horse / saddle itself. so the groin wouldnt really be exposed when used for its intended fighting style
This is great! I just wish the silhouettes introducing the armor were clearer to see. Perhaps a turntable expo at first before shots of it in an large environment would be great
For malekeiths armor it makes sense for the stomach to be the least protected area because he moves around on all fours. It makes sense that his back is more armour than his front.
This expert is wonderful!
no way! i Used to go to the higgins armory as a kid it is so cool to see this guy talking about my favorite video game
that was really cool. I love hearing expert takes on weapons and armor its so fascinating
I cant express how happy I am TH-cam recommended this to me.
Oh cool I was at that museum last year and I sat through a presentation on medieval arms and armor. I forget if the professor was there though because everyone was kitted out so I can't recall his face. Still it was a great experience!
Thanks for this video!
I don't generally like reaction videos but this one was good. Most people just react without having anything to say or even knowing anything about the topic at hand.
The lion symbolism in General Radahn's armour is in reference to Serosh, former Elden Lord, Godfrey's lion whom Radahn himself looked up to and idolised. It is also seen as an emblem of courage and honour. The gold in his set reflects his nobility and demi-godhood.
Even if it was just a script or if he just got told what everything is 5 minutes beforehand, it's really nice to see a professional guest actually using the correct terminology for the game. I doubt he's played Elden Ring, but it's really nice to see him go to that effort and get it correct. Good job Jahmez, not even IGN with it's 18 million subscribers go to that effort
The helmet of Lionel's armor, and the armor in general, seem like they would be great for dealing with archers and crossbowmen in seige warfare. The wide brim would be great for both the deflection of projectiles and for protecting the neck simply by tilting it so that the brim covers that side.
As someone who loves small details like this in games, I love it even more when someone of your caliber explains them. Thanks!
I wouldn't mind seeing him go over all the starting armours (for those that have armour).
May as well throw in Raging Wolf Set and Knight Set as they seem to be the two flagship sets that get used in videos and media.
To be fair with Rahsaan’s armor having tusks the original guy is literally like 100 feet that so no blade is getting all the way up there
So nice to see someone passionate about their work.
A+ to whoever got the game footage for this
the thing he mentioned at the start with Radahn's ''tusks'' on his helmet is the same reason Vikings did *NOT* have horns on their helmet.
Funny the weaknesses he sometimes mentioned are addressed by the original user's moveset:
Rhadan can use gravity magic to subvert the face attacks
Mal is a quadruple fighter with acrobatic movements so his belly is rarely exposed
Blaidd's "mask" is his actual face
Carian Knight is able to keep them away via magic to make up for the weaknesses of physical styles.
🚬🗿👍🏼
Aw man, I was really hoping for a review of the Banished Knight set, it's probably my favourite one. Still a great video.
Next time!
Having two separate gauntlets may make sense for the Carian set if some of the spells the Carian knight needs to cast requires finer use of their hands than what the steel gauntlet may provide.
As a fan of the Fashion Souls he hit the nail on the head when it came the jousting shields on some of the armor. I wish you could alter and take away the shield on some of those armors
Things people generally don’t think about with helms are 1) how hard it is to see in them and 2) how hard it is to breathe in them.
WOW this video is great! My favorite parts is when you talk about parts of the armor that are exposed like the Night's Calvalry set not having mush protection on the groin area.... Well they are on horse most of the time so having that area be comfortable would be great for them. Great job!
Tbh, I wish I had this man as a history teacher when I was in high school, I may not have wound up getting lucky the same way, but 100% I'd have learned more
need a part 2 super badly, need him to see the Banished Knight set!!! Talking about the altered/unaltered versions might be kind of weird but yeah
I wish there was a mention about the tailored variants most of these armors have. It usually just removes the cape or some other additional parts and makes the armor less cool (imo) but it's something to keep in mind.
I'd like to mention that, while i don't know much about the lore, the Crucible Axe Knight armour is clearly decorative, and it shows with the helmet. The axe head wings seem intended to portray the image of a grand crown, and the vertical slits would allow the wearer to look someone up and down to assess them more easily.
The ridiculously wide brim on Lionel's Helmet seems less "gladiator" to me, and more "humble-brag". It's very striking without being too gaudy, it's eye-catching without being an eyesore. It seems like the original commissioner either wanted people to notice and remember them, or maybe he just liked the look of it. I certainly do.
The Carrion armour seems like, while in relatively good condition, it's still worn out (which makes sense, given the setting), so would it be possible that the gauntlets _were_ one piece, but have since been separated or torn apart?
This was a very good version of 'real world expert looks at video game thing' type of video. A shame you couldn't get some more of the other armor sets in, I would've loved to see the wolf's, cleanrot knight's, banished knight's, briar and the Hoslow's sets. Furthermore 'fantastical' sets like Bull-goats, flame monk's and tree sentinels' would've been interesting. And of course more realistic/basic armors like the iron, knight's, vagabond knight's, and soldier's sets.
I'm super amazed that no one has said this, but I just want to point out something. Blaidd is NOT wearing a wolf mask. He is actually distinctly just... not wearing any kind of headwear. Here's some kind of werewolf or wolfman, that's actually just... His face. Canonically, the mask the player gets to complete the set is a mask that an assassin wore to disgust themselves as Blaidd. So there just isn't a helmet for the set, which should low key effect it's score. Fantastic set, truly, but completely lacking a helmet in combat is... Well there's a reason helmets are the single piece of armor we still use in every situation lol.
