I'm surprised some of the HNIC cast were involved in the broadcasts a they were tied to covering the NHL those days... the NHL were not happy when Hull and many other NHLers got involved with another pro league especially when they were getting paid more in the WHA. When the WHA teams joined the NHL, all player stats (like Gretzky) did not transfer over.

I remember back when the Flames first came to Calgary the regular colour guy was not available, so they brought in Meeker last minute to work with Ed Whalen. The network was flooded with protest calls , Whalen said it was the worst 3 hours of his life. It was agreed Meeker would never be brought in to work local again. He must have had connections at CBC to stay at HNIC

The official scoring was wonky in this game. On Howe's first-period goal, Stapleton shovels it to who appears to be Mark Howe who deflects it to Gordie, who scores, but Backstrom got the other assist. Backstrom (#14, no helmet) was skating alongside Gordie, but clearly did not redirect the puck to him. Bobby Hull's first goal was clearly off a pass from Rejean Houle, yet Frank Mahovlich received the only assist. There were other examples....

gordie cracks me up. he doesn't get too excited when the russkis think they can mix it up with him. at 32 : 03 of the video, the commies had just knocked gordie down at the blue line and there was a whistle. it looks like ivan wants to push it with gordie, but he just carries his stick up in the air like an umbrella -- a clear message that you get the stick next. many players ran gordie and they all got more back for their money.

The Russians actually claimed that this series showed that the Russians had superior hockey players in terms of "depth". But in fact, I believe that the NHL could have easily have created a 'second string' roster that would have been superior to this WHL team. Just as in today's hockey, Canada could easy send 2 teams to the Olympics etc.

    • @ericw3229

That wasn't entirely accurate. Overall, the 74 Canadian team did pretty well. the games were close .One game, Team Canada, actually tied a game in Moscow but a late goal.by Hull as time ran out was disallowed though replays showed it was in before time expired. Considering many of the WHA payers were much older and past their NHL prime they held their own. The Soviets had another advantage. This was their absolute best team and ther national team trained virtually year-round.
