It was the next season that I really started watching and following the NFL. I missed this Super Bowl and the one before it because of Cub Scout commitments. Super Bowl III me and a friend watched with our dad's for most of the game. Then we got bored and stopped watching around halftime, lol!!
I got a life lesson watching the "Blunder Bowl"...it was inspiring to see the Colts fight through all their self-inflicted problems and not quit! A lot of times I just want to quit on life when I look at all my blunders, but the Colts didn't quit, and yeah, even if it wasn't pretty, in the end they were Champions! They would have regretted it the rest of their lives if they laid down and quit because they felt their self-inflicted damage was too much to overcome. God bless them for their perseverance! I saw the Blunder Bowl live on TV when I was only 7 years old, and I'm now 61. I cherish the memory now more than ever!
Morton had a bum shoulder. Couldn't throw, he proved it. Landry had a future H.O.F.. He was not an ordinary So!!call rookie. Landry he won his S.B. the way he wanted. Still pissed me off.

All us kids that we're 8 to 10 years old in 1960 . Don't give coach Landry a free pass. We were teens in the mid 60's.Some of us tore him apart. For his failures. 1 Green Bay 2. Browns. Colts. Steelers. And all the 80's He taught all 12 of us a lot of football. With us he had no excuses.

They made a awful game look like a war of attrition on the gridiron. To Facenda narrating, the Music and a lot of great shots with the fans,players and coaches.
Without question. It employed some of the greatest cues in NFL Films' history. Along with devastatingly effective use of slow motion. These elements combined to bring to life, the genuinely brutal character of this game. It wasn't an awful championship, really. It was more of a reflection of a rare instance, in which both teams had years of frustration to exorcise. That there didn't seem to be much flow to it, only bespeaks the utter desperation of each side. The montage, towards the end, is extraordinary in the depiction of that fury (enhanced as it was by a section of a work by Tchaikovsky). As Landry said, long after, it was the hardest hitting game he had ever witnessed.
Capping 5 years of playoff heartbreak for Dallas. The championship the following year was almost anticlimactic. The Cowboys should have burned those blue jerseys. Lombardi would have won three Super Bowls with their talent.

The was the first Super Bowl I watched as a kid. But I just discovered this of this particular NFL film: the final kick of Jim O'Brien shown here is actually the extra point that tied the game. I noticed how quick it went through the uprights, and replayed it, and sure enough the spot is at the 10-yard-line. The actual winning field goal is a 32-yard kick and that is shown in another NFL Film of that game. Anyhow, I love these old films!
I noticed it too, years ago, when I was a kid. Drove me nuts! I complained to my parents about it, but the lament fell on deaf ears. I always knew that if I ever met Steve Sabol this would be the first thing I'd ask him about.
This is the ultimate in NFL Highlights: John Facenda, especially when he says the name, John Unitas, and the 60's soundtrack. It's the reason for why I first loved football and the NFL.

This game was an absolute disaster, but the script, narration and score make this seem as important as the taking of Guadalcanal. I used to watch these 30-minute clips over and over on Super Bowl Sunday, from I all the way to XXV or so. Nothing had more to do with me being a pro football fan than these highlights.
Super Bowl V is the most underrated NFL classic Game. They said it was the Blunder Bowl because of the turnovers. Guess which over classic game that had a lot of turnovers? That’s right. The 1958 NFL Championship Game.
the 1970 season was the beginning of a decade where the defences overwhelmed the offences. this super bowl featured the 2 best defences in the NFL. they played for the turnovers and they got the turnovers. by 1972 teams were running the ball a lot more and basically playing not to lose. by 1978 the NFL started changing the rules to open up the passing game because in 1977 there were only about 6 teams that were any fun to watch.
yep. the cowboys were the champs that year. staubach, stabler, jones, bradshaw and tarkenton [before he was injured] provided the excitement. the broncos, rams and bears had fine teams but mediocre passing games and were rather boring to watch [unless walter payton was ripping off a long run].
Amazing, Mike Curtis makes what turned out to be the game winning interception and he is just acting completely stoic. These idiots in today's game would be running all over the field celebrating with their "look at me!" antics.
20:09-22:20...that might be the best work NFL Films ever did. I don't say that with hyperbole either. They took what was a pretty dreadful game in terms of execution and created a montage of drama that Hollywood would've struggled to replicate. Just incredible the music, the visuals, and the incredible voice of John Facenda.

@@mikevanriel7573 The Colts were definitely the better team that year, just 2 losses compared to the Cowboys 4, just a season removed from an NFL Championship and SB appearance and a 1 loss season the year before that (1967). Plus, the Cowboys got lucky in the playoffs in getting to face two teams (Lions & 49ers) brand new to the playoffs, while the Colts beat the powerhouse Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship. And Staubach was given plenty of chances to beat out Morton in 1969 and 1970 and couldn't do it.
Remember the key to this superbowl loss by the Cowboys was one of their star receivers Lance Rental was suspended in late November 1970, and ultimately did not play in Super V.
Dallas totally blew this game. You can't be in the red zone that many times in one game and constantly come away with squat. If ever a team choked away a Super Bowl, it was Dallas on January 17, 1971.
NAH, Colts choked more with all those turnovers. Dallas couldn't do squat on offense for the entire 2nd half while the Colts moved the ball up and down the field yet kept giving the ball away. Colts deserved to win for dominating the entire 2nd half.

They fumbled the opening kickoff; they were gifted the fumble recovery that the Cowboys actually recovered; they missed a FG off that possession; Morrall was intercepted in their next possession; they fumbled into the EZ for a touchback on their next possession; they scored a TD from inside the Dallas 10, which you suggested in your comment here isn't doing anything; they punted, and finally kicked the winning FG after getting another TO inside the Dallas 30 -- again, after as you say doing "squat." So either you're being hypocritical or you don't know what actually went down. The FACT is that the Cowboys would have won this game going away had ANY of the following actually happened: 1) Staubach started over Morton (far fewer bad throws and could have gotten away from the Colts defense); 2) the officials not missed the fumble recovery call; 3) Renfro knocked down the TD pass instead of only tipping it. That was the only play the Colts' offense made all day. Not saying the Cowboys made many more, nor am I saying they were necessarily the better team, but Morton played like he was throwing the game (he wasn't -- some of those picks were off receiver's hands). As someone who lives in the East Coast. I wish the Super Bowl was always played in the Mid Afternoon and not at 6:30 pm eastern and takes forever to finish.
If "Stone Hands" Reeves makes a simple catch, the worst case scenario for Dallas is OT. Two throws that should have been completions in the 4th quarter hit the receiver ight in the hands and bounced out for turnovers... and cost Dallas the game.

I watched this game alone in my room as a kid playing ball for Aberdeen Bobcats in Washington State. I learned a lot, but we did in fact call this one,,,"The Blunder Bowl".
nymike06, It was staged. Jack Newman was the name of the longtime sound man for NFL Films. I don't know if 'Mason' was, in fact, Newman (probably not), but that encounter at the ticket window, was a fake, whether Mrs. Weatherwax was in on it, or not!!!
Useless fact. The only time the Colts have made the Superbowl when its played in Miami and won when wearing their White Jerseys (Super Bowl V & Super Bowl XLI) and lost when wearing their Blue Jerseys (Super Bowl III & Super Bowl XLIV)
Not useless at all. I love facts like that. Here's another one I noticed: Dallas under Tom Landry won both Super Bowls in New Orleans and lost the three they played in Miami.
Several of those Colts players went on to join the Dolphins for their 2 Super Bowl wins. Earl Morrall most notably, who filled in for Griese, most of their perfect 72 season.
I recall Tom Landry saying of this game, "There were so many errors, mainly because of the hitting". He said it was the hardest hitting games he had ever coached. To quote him "Players on both side were getting the snot knocked out of em"...
How many times have I watched this film over the years, and I'm just now realizing that the shot of the winning FG is so obviously the extra point that tied the score at 13 (the only extra point the Colts made). These early SB highlight films were so sloppily produced, with clips taken out of context, fake sound effects, and so on. Even watching this when I was a kid I knew that supposed video shot of the winning field goal was actually a shot of an extra point kick. It may actually have been my childhood introduction to the concept of "fake news."
Tough call, but I would have to say the Ice Bowl. They were one play away from a Super Bowl, had played remarkably well under horrific circumstances. (Meredith 6 for 12 in the second half, Dallas holding the Packers to something like -23 yards in the second half until the game winning drive) and one play destroyed it all. If Dallas wins those two games against GB, it might be called the Landry Trophy, instead.

According to Tom Landry, the 68 loss to the Browns was their toughest loss. Said it was one of his best teams only to lose so early in the playoffs was devastating.

Twisting through the Colts like Two Texas Tornadoes Walt Garrison, Number 32, and Duane Thomas, Number 33, proved the worth of Landry’s Tactics. At 5:40.
The kick shown that went through the goal posts was his extra point that tied the game. The ball was spotted just 10 yards from the goal line. That kick in reality barely made it inside the upright.
Is there footage of the real kick? I have always suspected that wasn't the game winner because the kick was too close. I wonder why NFL Films did that??
Thanks for that observation. I thought it was weird since Curtis returned that interception to the 28, and the Colts pretty much just lined up the FG from there. They most certainly didn’t get that close; that kick was good well before it even hit top height. Too bad they didn’t have a good representation of the actual kick. Still can’t believe Staubach rode the pine that whole game; Morton looked like shit through most of that game. They would annihilate Miami with Roger the dodger the very next year...
Great NFL film on Super Bowl 5. Both teams were extremely desperate to rid themselves of their past losses. Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 3 to the Jets and the Cowboys with back-to-back NFL championship game defeats to Green Bay. It was extremely hard-hitting and the teams were perhaps both a bit tight due to the high pressure, hence a lot of turnovers. Very hard fought game that unfortunately is remembered for the turnovers.
Fifty years ago today in Miami, the first Super Bowl to be ever played with both teams as NFL exclusive members--the old Baltimore Colts (who won), and the Dallas Cowboys! Late in the film/video, some video clips appear BACKWARDS (first mirror image with just over 4 minutes to go)! The Cowboys themselves went backwards in 2020, and missed the playoffs. Maybe next year, Dallas!

One of the greatest jobs of narration and music for any single NFL game in history. Unfortunately it was describing a hard nosed, but poorly played game, and certainly the worst played Super Bowl game. The Cowboys had a overall great team in 1971-72, but they unfortunately had Craig Morton at QB. Earl Morrall was a better QB on the day, much better under the relentless pressure. And the Colts defense played their best game ever. As we almost always see, with rare exceptions, the QB makes the difference in nearly every Super Bowl. Walt Garrison does deserve a mention for suiting up after literally having his entire body being destroyed the week before in SF.
Arturo, Yet, if Schaecter hadn't been faked out of his jock by Billy Ray Smith, the game would have likely been over, despite the 3rd quarter having just begun and Morton's ineffectiveness due to his injured elbow. Morall was the better quarterback that day, no question, but the bottom line is, effectively his play and leadership led to 0 points. The Cowboys were clearly the better team and got screwed by that erroneous call. If not for that, Morton probably wouldn't have had to throw much at all, save outlets to his backs, for the remainder of the contest.

Colts C Bill Curry added some interesting insight on the Mackey TD: G Glenn Ressler admitted to not being able to block Bob Lilly. But on the TD play, Ressler can be seen doing a 180-move & taking out Pugh just as Pugh was about to level Unitas.
I heard a story, Mike Curtis of Baltimore, said to his teammates a week before the Superbowl, if we lose this game I'm going to kick all your asses. And he meant it.

Rusty, I don't know if you're being sarcastic, as Meredith hadn't played for two years, by that time. Maybe he would have still been more effective than Morton, whose bad elbow prevented the Cowboys from comfortably winning the game. Staubach would have presented a much different look for the Colts to contend with. But Landry was never going to remove Morton, unless he had been knocked out, or suffered such a serious injury that he couldn't continue.
Staubach was given plenty of chances to beat out Morton in 1969 and 1970 and couldn't do it. Morton was a better QB than seen here, his elbow was hurt and he couldn't throw deep, which was his forte. Plus he was missing his best receiver, Lance Rentzel.

Erik Richards, That's exactly right and as the narration intoned, a touchdown even at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, would have very likely put the game away. Morton wouldn't have had to throw anything other than screens or outlets to his backs. Also, despite Morall being the only consistent element in the Colts' attack (as Facenda added), one can't really claim that his play led to any points at all. The Cowboys were demonstrably the better team and got hosed by a foolish referee.
What I heard was that after the fumble the Colt players were screaming our ball and the referees awarded the ball to them. Dave Manders kept saying I have the ball but the referees threatened to throw him out of the game if he kept arguing. So he just handed them the ball. A referee screw up that never gets talked about.

at the 5:38 moment in the video is when i remember Saturday morning watching highlights and then going outside in the snow and dirt and playing football and getting knock on my azz, but getting back up and knocking someone on Their.

It could have been Earl Morrall, except the Colts turned the ball over 3 times, (one on downs, one int and one fumble) at the goal line after Morrall led them the length of the field. The Colts dominated the action once he entered the game.
Classic NFL Films work...Ironic paradox Johnny Unitas replaced Earl Morrall in SB 3 loss...Morrall replaced Unitas in SB 5 win and would go on to replace Bob Griese for much of Miami's undefeated Super Bowl season...

Staubach was not a rookie but in his second year. He was given two seasons to beat out Morton and couldn’t do it.

The was the first Super Bowl I watched as a kid. But I just discovered this of this particular NFL film: the final kick of Jim O'Brien shown here is actually the extra point that tied the game. I noticed how quick it went through the uprights, and replayed it, and sure enough the spot is at the 10-yard-line. The actual winning field goal is a 32-yard kick and that is shown in another NFL Film of that game. Anyhow, I love these old films!

This game was an absolute disaster, but the script, narration and score make this seem as important as the taking of Guadalcanal. I used to watch these 30-minute clips over and over on Super Bowl Sunday, from I all the way to XXV or so. Nothing had more to do with me being a pro football fan than these highlights.

Super Bowl V is the most underrated NFL classic Game. They said it was the Blunder Bowl because of the turnovers. Guess which over classic game that had a lot of turnovers? That’s right. The 1958 NFL Championship Game.
the 1970 season was the beginning of a decade where the defences overwhelmed the offences. this super bowl featured the 2 best defences in the NFL. they played for the turnovers and they got the turnovers.
by 1972 teams were running the ball a lot more and basically playing not to lose. by 1978 the NFL started changing the rules to open up the passing game because in 1977 there were only about 6 teams that were any fun to watch.

yep. the cowboys were the champs that year. staubach, stabler, jones, bradshaw and tarkenton [before he was injured] provided the excitement. the broncos, rams and bears had fine teams but mediocre passing games and were rather boring to watch [unless walter payton was ripping off a long run].
Two great defensive teams. They really clobbered each other there, and that explains a lot of the turnovers.

They took what was a pretty dreadful game in terms of execution and created a montage of drama that Hollywood would've struggled to replicate. Just incredible the music, the visuals, and the incredible voice of John Facenda.

Dallas was not the best team. Also, who knows what Staubach would have done in Super Bowl V. The Colts would have found a way to stop him.
@@mikevanriel7573 The Colts were definitely the better team that year, just 2 losses compared to the Cowboys 4, just a season removed from an NFL Championship and SB appearance and a 1 loss season the year before that (1967). Plus, the Cowboys got lucky in the playoffs in getting to face two teams (Lions & 49ers) brand new to the playoffs, while the Colts beat the powerhouse Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship. And Staubach was given plenty of chances to beat out Morton in 1969 and 1970 and couldn't do it.
The Cowboys had at least 3 chances to blow this game open early & often but couldn't.. Does that sound like the best team 2u??!!

Dallas totally blew this game. You can't be in the red zone that many times in one game and constantly come away with squat. If ever a team choked away a Super Bowl, it was Dallas on January 17, 1971.
NAH, Colts choked more with all those turnovers. Dallas couldn't do squat on offense for the entire 2nd half while the Colts moved the ball up and down the field yet kept giving the ball away. Colts deserved to win for dominating the entire 2nd half.

So either you're being hypocritical or you don't know what actually went down. The FACT is that the Cowboys would have won this game going away had ANY of the following actually happened: 1) Staubach started over Morton (far fewer bad throws and could have gotten away from the Colts defense); 2) the officials not missed the fumble recovery call; 3) Renfro knocked down the TD pass instead of only tipping it. That was the only play the Colts' offense made all day. Not saying the Cowboys made many more, nor am I saying they were necessarily the better team, but Morton played like he was throwing the game (he wasn't -- some of those picks were off receiver's hands). Even watching this when I was a kid I knew that supposed video shot of the winning field goal was actually a shot of an extra point kick. It may actually have been my childhood introduction to the concept of "fake news."

Tough call, but I would have to say the Ice Bowl. They were one play away from a Super Bowl, had played remarkably well under horrific circumstances. (Meredith 6 for 12 in the second half, Dallas holding the Packers to something like -23 yards in the second half until the game winning drive) and one play destroyed it all.
If Dallas wins those two games against GB, it might be called the Landry Trophy, instead.

They were excellent 70 and 71, however in 72 and '73 they were pretty poor. They had good years after that under Marchibroda after that.

Jim O’Brien’s game winning field goal would have been good for 50 yards even with the goal post moved back.
The kick shown that went through the goal posts was his extra point that tied the game. The ball was spotted just 10 yards from the goal line. That kick in reality barely made it inside the upright.
Is there footage of the real kick? I have always suspected that wasn't the game winner because the kick was too close. I wonder why NFL Films did that??

Thanks for that observation. I thought it was weird since Curtis returned that interception to the 28, and the Colts pretty much just lined up the FG from there. They most certainly didn’t get that close; that kick was good well before it even hit top height. Too bad they didn’t have a good representation of the actual kick. Still can’t believe Staubach rode the pine that whole game; Morton looked like shit through most of that game. They would annihilate Miami with Roger the dodger the very next year...

Great NFL film on Super Bowl 5. Both teams were extremely desperate to rid themselves of their past losses. Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 3 to the Jets and the Cowboys with back-to-back NFL championship game defeats to Green Bay.
It was extremely hard-hitting and the teams were perhaps both a bit tight due to the high pressure, hence a lot of turnovers. Very hard fought game that unfortunately is remembered for the turnovers.
Fifty years ago today in Miami, the first Super Bowl to be ever played with both teams as NFL exclusive members--the old Baltimore Colts (who won), and the Dallas Cowboys! Late in the film/video, some video clips appear BACKWARDS (first mirror image with just over 4 minutes to go)! The Cowboys themselves went backwards in 2020, and missed the playoffs. Maybe next year, Dallas!

One of the greatest jobs of narration and music for any single NFL game in history. Unfortunately it was describing a hard nosed, but poorly played game, and certainly the worst played Super Bowl game. The Cowboys had a overall great team in 1971-72, but they unfortunately had Craig Morton at QB. Earl Morrall was a better QB on the day, much better under the relentless pressure. And the Colts defense played their best game ever. As we almost always see, with rare exceptions, the QB makes the difference in nearly every Super Bowl. Walt Garrison does deserve a mention for suiting up after literally having his entire body being destroyed the week before in SF.
Arturo, Yet, if Schaecter hadn't been faked out of his jock by Billy Ray Smith, the game would have likely been over, despite the 3rd quarter having just begun and Morton's ineffectiveness due to his injured elbow. Morall was the better quarterback that day, no question, but the bottom line is, effectively his play and leadership led to 0 points. The Cowboys were clearly the better team and got screwed by that erroneous call. If not for that, Morton probably wouldn't have had to throw much at all, save outlets to his backs, for the remainder of the contest.

Dallas would have won with Meredith at QB. Morton had some serious arm problems that season.
Rusty, I don't know if you're being sarcastic, as Meredith hadn't played for two years, by that time.
Maybe he would have still been more effective than Morton, whose bad elbow prevented the Cowboys from comfortably winning the game. Staubach would have presented a much different look for the Colts to contend with. But Landry was never going to remove Morton, unless he had been knocked out, or suffered such a serious injury that he couldn't continue.
Staubach was given plenty of chances to beat out Morton in 1969 and 1970 and couldn't do it. Morton was a better QB than seen here, his elbow was hurt and he couldn't throw deep, which was his forte. Plus he was missing his best receiver, Lance Rentzel.

Erik Richards, That's exactly right and as the narration intoned, a touchdown even at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, would have very likely put the game away. Morton wouldn't have had to throw anything other than screens or outlets to his backs. Also, despite Morall being the only consistent element in the Colts' attack (as Facenda added), one can't really claim that his play led to any points at all.
The Cowboys were demonstrably the better team and got hosed by a foolish referee.
What I heard was that after the fumble the Colt players were screaming our ball and the referees awarded the ball to them. Dave Manders kept saying I have the ball but the referees threatened to throw him out of the game if he kept arguing. So he just handed them the ball. A referee screw up that never gets talked about.

Thomas was stifled, but no more than Bulaich and Nowatzke were. Up by 20-6, Landry would have been in a much more advantageous position to keep the Colts' defense on the field, wearing them out, and Thomas wouldn't have been stopped from breaking some big plays off, at some point. Game over.

Giving Howley the MVP is one of the biggest injustices in sports history. It should have been Mike Curtis or Jim O’Brien IMO
It could have been Earl Morrall, except the Colts turned the ball over 3 times, (one on downs, one int and one fumble) at the goal line after Morrall led them the length of the field. The Colts dominated the action once he entered the game.
