I know this is 2 years later, but a mother agency wants to represent me. They have no contract for me to sign and they charge $500 for my comp card photoshoot (they say it’s bc of the equipment used and photographer’s pay as well). I don’t know if that’s the norm for mother agencies or not? And then I’d have to also pay an additional $150 for all of my comp card copies. Is that reasonable or normal?

Don’t do it, you should not be paying for a test shoot. If they believed in you as a model, they would find photographers who want to do free test shoots with you. You should not be starting off with debt for a test shoot.

i know this is 3 years to late but i just want to know if its important for me to sign with a mother agency near me, or could i just sign with one in a different country??

Never too late for a good question! It is not important that your mother agency is near you, they could be in a different hemisphere, as long as they take care of you and are on top of their work. Models are always traveling around for work, so wherever home is now could change regularly.

Are there mother agencies for older models just entering the industry thank you for your time to respond.

I'm not sure what you would define as older, but most of the older models that have agency representation and book jobs are ones that already have years of work experience. The majority of jobs are looking for the younger models with much less of a demand for older models.

If I already signed to an agency in New York can I still sign to a mother agency in LA and London? The agency (bmg) in New York has not done a single thing in trying to cast me, very bad at communicating and I am talking with 2 agencies (a mother agency and a bigger agency).. wondering if I could sign with the mother agency in LA and do independent work in New York because I know people in fashion there

Hi Chris, sorry to hear you aren't having a good experience with your current agency. If your current agency was the first you signed to, you have most likely signed a mother agency contract with them, meaning they would have control over the agencies you would sign with in other markets and get a commission from the earnings in those other markets. If you were to end your relationship with your current agency, you could then sign to the LA agency, making them your mother agency, and they could place you with the agency in London, but you would have to work out with them if they would require you to pay them a 10% commission on the bookings you got yourself in NY without an agency there.
