Skiffs Are Awesome

  • It's amazing how a simple boat can change one's life! This video shows pretty much what my channel is all about, and to be honest my life too, to a certain extent. I have spent the most amazing last couple of years sailing the rivers and estuaries aboard my awesome skiff Forager, a Goat Island Skiff that I built in 2019 during lockdown. She literally changed my life...

      Hi Ben!! Thanks for asking!
We are all ok. I have been so busy with my Ocean Skipper certification that I haven't been able to edit any videos.
I do have some footage but no time to sort it all out.
I 'll have my final test on the 3rd and 4th of December and after that I'll should start sailing/editing again!
      Cheers,
      Teo

If you want a fast, more stable boat, easier to cartop, really versatile boat...have a look at the OZ Goose.

Thanks for showing something new to me, exciting and healthy and professionally done.
I retired here to Seixas close to the Miño and have done alot of kayaking on the river and most Sundays to Morrazo with a club paddling.
but, seeing what you are up to makes a skiff totally tempting.
Can you please put me straight about the regulations...I see that you had to take your skiff to be inspected but I read on the net that under 5 metres doesn´t need to be registered..This English loves it here but so bad at languages and unsure how to and where to...can you put me on track?
    Truely would appreciate it.
    All the best. Trevor

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Trevor.
I’ll try to be as clear as I can regarding legislation.
I’ll focus on class 5 boats, small boats for sheltered waters like my skiff
Since January 2019 ALL vessels need to be registered with the following exceptions:
-Windsurf boards, SUPs, Kayaks, Experimental boats, Beach boats with no sail or motor and if staying closer than 300m to the beach.
-Racing dinghies if used for club racing and training and only by registered athletes, regatta support boats if registered as such by the club.
-any pram identified as Auxiliary from a main boat
Any vessel used for fishing even if only occasionally, need to be registered, even a kayak.
I know for a fact that many local maritime authorities usually turn a blind eye regarding small sailing/rowing dinghies…until the day they don’t! it’s risky….
If you want to build one yourself, you need to go to the local Maritime Authorities Office (Capitania) and ask for a self build license ( Licença de Auto Construção).
To do so you need a quick summary of the boat and its building method and materials if it’s under 5meters. If over 5 meters you need the corresponding project/drawings.
The Capitania will submit all the details to a Naval engineer who will approve the construction or ask for corrections to the project. Can take a 4 weeks or 4 months!!!
If approved you get 6 months to finish the project before needing to renew the license.
When you have the boat ready you need to go to the Capitania and ask for an inspection to your boat.
On smaller boats they usually do the two inspections (on dry and in the water) in one go.
After checking for construction quality and measures against the project’s drawings you will be asked to sail the boat there and then.
And that’s it! 120€ for building license, 40€+40€ for inspections+travel expenses for the inspector, 75€ for final boat documents. (2019 costs)
If you buy a boat you need to go to Capitania with the current owner or an authenticated signed paper to transfer the boat to your name.
I believe now they are also asking for a paper to show that the current owner doesn’t have fiscal debts.
If the boat as a motor make sure the BoatMotor pair are registered together as you can not have any motor on the boat other than the one which was registered to the boat.
If they don't match, it can be a pain to remove the old motor registered to the boat and only then you can get a new one registered to the boat.
Of the top of my head, and to the best of my knowledge, this is the current legislation as per the
      Decreto-Lei n.º 93/2018 de 13 de Novembro
Hope it helps and wish you all the best.
      Regards,
      Teo

Wow Teo forager is so fast is she a racing boat or a dinghy cruising boat? We like to explore but I like going fast more but my brother Gene gets worried about capsizing. I like capsizing and i always go in the water even if it’s cold. But it is really cold here and so sometimes you get freezing. Lucky 7 goes fast too. Do you live in the tropics? From Luca

I use an Insta360 oneX2 and the Insta 360 Studio to frame the 360 shot. On average It adds around 2-3 hours to my editing time just to frame the shots. Then I still have to put everything on DaVinci Resolve for the main edit.
