Leah, this video had helped me understand how to move side to side to complete a pantograph on my Qzone hoop frame. really well done! It didn't occur to me to use the channel locks! I was hoping you would show how you advance to the next row and position the quilt so the pantograph nests properly in the previous stitching. I would also love to see a follow up video with any new tips and tricks you can share after quilting in the Qzone for a while. Thanks!
Haha, how many times I have started quilting after a side shift and suddenly notice I haven't reclamped with the elastic bands! If Leah Day forgets, too, I don't feel so bad. Thanks for being human, Leah!
Love leaving one back clamp in place!
I’ve left that last clamp in place all along, and recently started replacing the long clamp in front with the short side clamp to help keep the quilt straight while I move the quilt. I never thought of using the lever lock!
I put clear vinyl on top of the pantograph, that way I can mark start and stop without writing on the pattern.

If you place clear wide box tape on the edge of your paper spaced as you wish, you can mask over this smooth tape. It makes it easy to remove the masking tape so you don't mess up your paper and then if your quilt is not lined up the pantagram is easy to move.

Leah, would consider doing a pantograph on the qzone with a domestic machine. Would it be any different besides the space we have to work with

I wipe mine down with a paper towel, sometimes with some glass cleaner or water / vinegar mixture.
Drafting tape is what she is using to hold down the Pantograph. Before you buy the tape make sure it is “movable” or “repositionable”. Old fashioned Freezer tape will work as well as painters tape.

Great tutorial. It was Quilt Canada 2019 in my neighbourhood this weekend. I met Karla from Salt Lake City The Grace Company. Saying "Hello my quilting friend" got me free package of TruGrips. Thank you. I know I want the 15Pro (I found the 21 Qnique flimsy, no resistance) but I am debating the hoop frame or the continuum. I am planning to long arm my own quilt which takes me upwards to a year to piece so the long arm will sit in a corner all of that time. Do you prefer the experience to pin and roll the quilt or do you find yourself in familiar teritory by pre-basting? Thanks again for the TruGrips. Will be looking out for the new rulers.
That's awesome to hear Lise! Most likely the 21 felt that way due to the setup on the frame. You can always lower the back bar to add resistance so the machine doesn't whip around so easily. Personally I like the prep for the Continuum Frame better because it's so much faster to advance the quilt through the frame. But if you're not going to use it much, I wonder if just renting time locally is a better fit for you? I'm glad you're excited about the new rulers! I can't wait until they're here!

Good morning Leah, I've been watching you for about 2 years now (started with free motion quilting, just can't do it ) and I just ordered your guide book which is going to be of great help but what I need to know is where to get the channel locks. I have the Cutie Frame.
The Cutie Frame does not have compatible channel locks at this time. Maybe in the future!

I have the original version of the Q-zone, called the Dream Quilt Frame. Mine does NOT have channel locks and I think that might be a crucial piece of equipment... Do you know if I can purchase those and add them? I am using a Q'Nique '19 with the appropriate carriage for the '19. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You'll need to check with Brother on this. I don't think there are channel locks compatible with that version of the frame, but it's worth an ask!

I have the grace frame that I bought through my Viking dealer. I use my Epic 980Q with it. Can I add the laser light? I would love to do pantographs.
Yep, the Gracie Laser will work if you're using the Q-Zone Hoop or Queen frames.
I am so grateful for your videos. Viking dealers are selling the frames and overhead lights but there aren't any videos or any of the other options that you are showing.
Where can I get the laser light? I love this so much better than the wooden stylus.

When you are quitting, do you have the machine on cruise or precise or manual? I found that the tension is so loose on the curves if I’m going at a good pace.
I usually have my machine set to Cruise when doing pantographs. I would refer to our videos on tension for help... this is most likely not your stitch regulator setting, but your threading that is the issue - leahday.com/blogs/machinequilting/troubleshoot-tension-on-a-longarm
Where do you get the piece you are laying pantograph on for that frame
This is the Continuum Frame and it includes the back table with the frame. If your frame doesn't have this part, you will need to purchase the Back table Inserts for your frame.
I’m looking forward to improving the process with pantographs. I have always just quilted from left to right (from the front) so resetting for the next row can be tricky. I’m wondering about alternating; quilting all the way across (left to right), then advancing the quilt and quilting all the way back (right to left) on the second pass. If that would help keep things lined up better? Has anyone tried this?
Yes, you can advance and quilt right to left and this works easier on a rolling rail style frame. Just keep in mind most machines do quilt better running from left to right as shown in this video (right to left from the back) and it is easier to get thread breaks when quilting from the opposite direction.
Would you make a quick video showing how to change the battery in the laser pointer. I left mine on amd its dead. Not sure if i should take it apart and off the machine but since i need to finish the row i dont want to move the laser pointer and lose my spot on the pantograph. Only on my 2nd quilt. Also bottom thread gets stuck and has to be broken loose but leaves a birds nest underneath. Two different issues. Someone said i may have a loose thread stuck in the bobbin case or feed dogs. Since i have a queen quilt on the frame in progress i cant tear down the machine like that. Help!!!! Please!!!
I have the grace queen frame with a juki tl2010q
Unfortunately, both issues require you to lose your place in your pantograph. To change the battery in the light, you'll need to unscrew it from the carriage, pop the bottom off and access the batteries. To fix the birds nest that is catching your thread, you may have to take the quilt off the frame. At the very least, try rolling the machine as far over to one side as you can, then brush out the bobbin area thoroughly.
When you get things working again (and do test on a scrap square in the batting area off the edge of the quilt before bothering to get back onto the pantograph), first align your needle with the design. It can be a loop, a point - something distinctive in the design, then shift your laser light to match the point on the pantograph.
Repeat this a few times walking from the front of the frame to the back until you feel satisfied with the placement. It most likely won't be 100% perfect, but it will be close enough to continue.

I notice that you don't use the side clamps. Why is this. I'm getting ready to do my first one on this exact machine but the queen qzone and was wondering why
I was probably distracted and forgot to attach them. It's easy to miss small things like that when doing 10 extra things for shooting a video!

That’s called a top carriage. The Cutie Frame comes with a slightly different one from this. We will be offering the new Cutie Breeze top carriage to upgrade original Cutie frames very soon.

where do you get a laser light? I have the patch perfect trays on my q-zone queen frame.

I'm using a pantograph on my Q-Zone Hoop Frame and it is a challenge. This is my first and probably last.
Andrew, I struggled my first time too. I told my husband it was a hot mess. but I think Leah has some good tips here. have you tried it again?

That's a great suggestion. Unfortunately I no longer have this sample quilt to shoot a picture of this design. It didn't turn out perfect and pantographs aren't my favorite way to quilt on the Hoop Frame for this reason.
