Baby quilts are a breeze. Quilts that are larger are very difficult. I have been quilting for 51 years so I am not a newbie. Maybe you will have better luck than me.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Quilting a big quilt is challenging whether you're quilting in zones on a Hoop Frame or spreading it out on a table and navigating the bulk through the arm of the machine. And while you're not a new quilter, that was your first quilt on a Hoop Frame, so it's going to feel like a totally new experience. Give yourself more time to experiment and learn the process and you may find it more enjoyable.

Thankyou so much for this video. I have a Janome 1600P on a Grace Pinnacle frame. I bought this second hand. I have the sure stitch regulator however I was having trouble with tension. I was told that everytime I change the type of thread or fill the bobbin I have to check the bobbin tension using the yoyo test that I have seen you do. I am confused as to now know what to do. I seem to have the tension correct and even though I check the tension each time I fill the bobbin I don't seem to need to change the tension. I don't typically check my bobbin tension with each bobbin change. I check and set it once with the thread I'm using and then I don't have to adjust it again. If there are tension adjustments needed, I change the top tension dial.
Probably not. The main reason for needle breaks is pulling the machine around and not giving it gas (getting the needle to move). Try moving the carriage a LOT more slowly. Much slower than you think and run the machine at a slightly faster than you think speed.

I’m not sure if I missed it in the video or not. What stitch length do you use when using the frame? Do you set it at zero like free motion and did you put the feed dogs down? Also I have the same machine except DB so no thread cutter. At the end I have issues with getting the bobbin thread up to bury the threads. What’s the easiest way? Thank you for the great video.
You can use the same settings you use for free motion quilting. So for me that is stitch length 0, but no, I don't drop my feed dogs. It's up to you - if you drop your feed dogs for free motion quilting on your machine try it and see if that works well. You'll need to experiment with settings until you find the best method. As for pulling up thread, try taking one single stitch using the Needle up / Down button so you have a clean complete stitch. Then it should be easier to pull up your thread tail.
Roll the machine to the side and flip up the quilt so you can easily see the bobbin area. Then pop out the bobbin case and replace it. Top loading bobbins are trickier and I often try to check the amount in the bobbin as I'm re-hooping the quilt.
Leah, I’m really struggling with the whole frame thing. It’s like it’s a totally different machine and doesn’t do anything it did before. I think fabric tension might be part of the issue, what are your machine settings? What’s your favorite thread? And what size needle do you prefer?

Done! In this video I'm just using a Hoop Frame, Convertible Darning Foot, and Frame Quilting Foot Set. Later I added a Sure Stitch Regulator and it really helps with keeping your stitches the same size, but it's not required from the beginning.
Actually it's the Continuum II Frame! If you want the greatest longevity and a frame that will grow with you as your needs change, go with the Continuum. If it's a choice between the Q-Zone and Cutie, go with the Q-Zone. Just keep in mind that the way these hoop frames are designed, you will end up spending more time with every advance. More time fiddling with the quilt means less time quilting - something most quilters find frustrating!
I love the Janome 1600 and looking at the Grace Hoop frame, but curious to know whether pantographs work with domestic machines on a frame or not. Maybe I'm not using the correct search terms to locate the answer. My FMQ is improving with practice but curious to use pantographs. Thanks so much for all your videos and great teaching skills and knowledge - I have learned so much from you.
Yes! You can quilt pantographs on a home machine on a frame like this. You are limited on the height of the design based on the size of the machine. I've updated my pantographs to work well for this now and you can find them here - leahday.com/products/longarm-pantograph-quilting-designs
Yes, so long as you have at least an 8 inch harp space - that's the distance between the needle and the motor on the machine. Less than that amount of space isn't really practical as you will not have enough room to enjoy quilting on the frame.
Hi Leah, I've considered getting a frame because I have arthritis in my neck and shoulders so currently I use a home embroidery machine, the drawback is being able to line up design's and the hoop area is only 360x240mm. Just wondering how this compares to normal fmq where you move the quilt which I can't do. Unfortunately I am 100 miles away from nearest dealership.
Thank you, Leah. I am looking at the Cutie frame. Do you find that using a frame, as opposed to sitting at a midarm, is easier on the neck and shoulders? I cannot quilt as much as I want on my sit-down midarm, because I have a bad neck. I have heard you mention in one of your videos that you sometimes have neck pain. Then I would also have to get a ruler work table for my machine.
Yes, I do find this is much much easier on my back and neck. I would advise setting your frame up so you can stand and quilt and have it quite high so you don't tend to crane your neck over at an awkward angle. You will need to use a machine compatible with a stitch regulator in order to do this, but it definitely makes things much much easier!
@@LeahDay Why do I need a machine compatible with a stitch regulator in order to stand? My machine is a Tiara, and it has a stitch regulator, that little TruStitch hockey puck type. My husband is making me a ruler table that will fit on the Cutie so I can use it. Do you think that will work? I cannot afford a new machine, and my Tiara works very well.
Yes, this machine will work, but you'll likely only have 2-3 inches of quilting space. I fear that would be more annoying than helpful so I would advise saving for a bigger machine or longarm instead to go with your hoop frame.
I just got my new grace qzone queen frame, and after assembly discovered that I have to either purchase or make the leader cloth! The leader cloth kit from the Grace Company is a bit pricey ($190) for my queen qzone, so Im thinking about buying muslin and making my own. Do you have any experience with making the leader cloth(s)? Is there a distinct advantage to buying the kit from Grace that makes it worth the extra cost?
Yep, this is part of the reason I don't carry that frame - because there are a lot of hidden costs that can sneak up on you. I think it's worth it to purchase the leader cloth. It's made of thick, durable material, it comes with velcro to attach it to your frame, and I've been using mine for years and never had a problem with it. We do offer this leader cloth here (it says Continuum Frame, but it's the same leader cloth for your Q-Zone Queen) - leahday.com/products/continuum-frame-leader-cloth
@@LeahDay Thank you so much for your response and advice! I ordered leadercloth from Grace on April 30, then never heard anything. No shipping date or ETA. I called customer service May 9 and they told me the leader cloth is backordered indefinitely, so I cancelled the order. I don't know if the kits are back ordered, just the fabric by the yard. They said they are completely out and have to get more manufactured. I dove into my stash and discovered I have just enough muslin to make my own! Another solution would be to pay for four more clips for the back rail, but I'm holding off on that. Hopefully problem solved. :)
Thank you for this video. I have had my eye on this frame for a while. Do you know anyone who has put a Pfaff Expression 4.2 on this frame? If so, have they had any issues with it? I am so tempted to take the plunge & make the investment. Love all your videos!
Yes, I have had many quilters with this machine on this frame. The only issue with Pfaff Expressions is they have a lot of settings for the foot height and you'll need to fiddle with that a bit until you find the perfect placement. That's the case for quilting on a frame or with the machine in a table - I learned those Pfaffs can be tricky several years ago.
I may be able to fit a Convertible Darning Foot to your machine. Send us an email with your machine's make and model and I'll see if it can fit. leahday.com/pages/contact-us
Hi Leah, I have so many questions. 1st can I purchase this foot from you? I have a Janome 6400 Memory craft QCP. My 2nd question can I use a pantograph on the front of this fame. Thank You for all you do for us . Firecracker Linda Evans
Great questions! Double check your machine number - I don't have that one listed, but I do have a 6300 and 6500. I do have feet in stock for both of these. And yes, you can quilt small block sized designs from the front, but I wouldn't recommend trying to quilt an edge-to-edge pantograph from the front of the frame. It's really best to quilt from the back with the paper taped to the table top.
Your machine seems centered right/left and front/back on the platform of the frame. Can you create more space for quilting by placing the machine farther forward or back?
Nope. The space is limited by the harp space of your machine. After slipping the back rail in place, no matter where the machine is located on the top plate, the space is dictated by the amount of room you have between the back of the back and the foot.
I have a Singer Quantum 9960. It has a 6.5 throat space. I know that’s only going to give me like 3” of quilting space. So would it still be worth upgrading and getting the frame??
Leah can you do rulerwork with this setup? With a longarm you need a plate under the bed of the quilt to give a hard surface for the rulers to rest. Do you need something similar with the Q hoop system.
Yep! You can do ruler quilting on the hoop frame. I've played with this on this machine and I found the machine was wide enough and bulky enough to support the rulers. If your machine was really skinning and narrow around the needle, you may need to purchase an additional ruler plate or extension bed and that might be tricky. I tried out the only one available for this kind of thing and was not impressed. So my advice would be to try rulers and see if you have enough support with your machine. If you don't, if the machine just doesn't have enough space to support the ruler, that is just not something you can use while your machine is on the frame.
Do you think you could reverse the roll so that it is in the front and thereby avoid losing any quilting space? I find you to be the most interesting textile artist on the internet. What I mean is that I find myself wondering about your life, educational history, beliefs etc as I watch you. You are obviously intelligent and thoughtful and I value learning life lessons or perspectives I have not considered. You share a great deal but if you have not considered doing a series about yourself and inspirations then I would like to request that. You look very young but I’m guessing you are over thirty based on info in some of your videos... like 34? You have a HUGE bright energy that is disguised by your size and soft voice...and I can’t stop thinking of you as a Viking Seer but that could just be my constant viewing of The Last Kingdom on Netflix. Lol I am a Christian but I also value GODDESS energy and you have it off the charts.
Thank you for your kindness Mary. Yes, you can start in the middle of your quilt and stitch the upper half, then rotate and stitch the lower half. It's on my list to try this myself. I have shared a podcast that's more personal, but have slowed it down considerably because I'm now tackling my addiction to work. I've also become a Christian and will be creating a new series of quilts focusing on God's mighty power and love. I did write a book on my Goddess quilts which is a bit of an autobiography - leahday.com/products/leah-days-goddess-quilts-print-edition I've moved from this series now, but still respect where I was over those years.
Leah Day Thanks for the advice.
Hi, I have a quilting frame and use a pfaff domestic sewing machine, do you know if pfaff make a similar foot?
I may be able to fit a Convertible Darning Foot to your machine. Send us an email with your machine's make and model and I'll see if it can fit. leahday.com/pages/contact-us
@@LeahDay thank you, my machine is a pfaff Quilt expression 4.2. Fingers crossed 🤞
Will this frame fit on the HV sapphire or designer epic. Thanks
Yes, most definitely.
I have the Sapphire and it fits.
I was wondering what you place the machine and quilting hoop on. Is it a table?
The entire system is the Hoop Frame. Meaning the hoop area is attached to legs that stand on the floor.
I have a Singer Quantum 9960. It has a 6.5 throat space. I know that’s only going to give me like 3” of quilting space. So would it still be worth upgrading and getting the frame??
I’m looking at either the q zone pro or the continuum frame.
Also any idea if there is a foot for my low shank singer like the one you have in this video?
Yes, I do have a low shank darning foot to fit your Singer, but no, it probably won't make you very happy to move this small machine to this frame.
Will the frame work with a Juki TL2200 QVP Mini?
Yep! That machine is very similar to the Janome 1600 so you will have the same high speed and space that I have in this video.
How wide of a quilt would a person be able to quilt that wouldn't require resetting?
32 inches wide would be perfect if you wanted a little space on the edges to test your stitching.
@@LeahDay Thank you Leah
Can u use the Janome HD9 on this frame?
Yep, you'll have the same amount of quilting space as my Janome 1600.
Thank you.
I've seen people use a vintage singer in this manner. Either a 201 (which is a little more difficult to change the bobbin) or a 15-91.
When will we get episode 39 on the quilt story?😄
I believe you have me confused with someone else Ann. 😀
Leah Day Isn’t ‘Mally the Maker’ yours?
Enjoy!
@@LeahDay I am glad you have found Christ. I ordered your two books today and will be watching more of your content. Thank you for all you put out there and share.
So so disappointed. I had my heart set on this machine and can’t find it anywhere. You had my husband convinced too. 😢
We have 12 on order that will hopefully be shipping to us by the end of October. If you go to - leahday.com/1600 - click on the orange button "want to know when this is back in stock?" You will be emailed as soon as we get the machines back in stock.
Almost all home sewing machines are out of stock right now. Between the virus lockdowns and mask making, everyone is getting into sewing. So just understand that it's a challenging time to get your hands on any machine and all dealers are trying to do our best.
