  • The No Foul Coalition needs us to band together to end racism in the NBA and all professional sports...except for Native-Americans. They don't count.
    With the recent attention on the NBA surrounding Donald Sterling's controversial
    remarks, it is easy to overlook that Native-Americans have long experienced racism in professional sports. The No Foul Coalition isn't real, but is meant to shine a light on how prejudice towards minorities affect us all.

    I remember as a student in college, we were discussing discrimination. A bitter young black man could not conceive there was discrimination of native peoples. He thought they were rich from casinos. Obviously he never met a native people. But some how it is still okay to forget they were/are the first people in this country to be discriminated/and hunted down to almost extinction. Only because they could not be enslaved so not worth much to Anglos. But also is forgotten while discrimination and cruelty was happening to other races so was it being done to Indians, at the same time. Discrimination is discrimination no matter what color,race,sex, etc.. Its not okay for blacks, its not okay for Native Peoples.

      To provide an example of the double standard to today's broadly accepted view towards racism. For some reason racism is bad only when it's not directed at Native Americans. The team name Redskins is still be fought over but nothing's being done about it. The name change could've been achieved in the same amount of time it took to ban Sterling from the NBA. They're calling bullshit on that view towards racism by using satire.

    People you have to be kidding me. There are more black people in the NBA because of skill, not because of race. They're not like "Hmm, in order to not be racist, we're going to choose more Black people than White people regardless of skill". That would actually be racist because then they'd assume "Well since he's Black, he's better than the White guy in basketball".
    I work at a sports camp, the amount of Black children that say "I want to be in the NBA" supersedes other races who just play because they love it.

      ***** so you're giving a free pass to any racist who isnt white? isnt that kind of racist? jets take jay-z for example and his five percent nation medallion he wears to basketball games. he is the owner of the nets and he proudly wears the emblem of a group who says "white people are the devil" and "Whiteness is weak and wicked and inferior." that kind of double standard is not funny at all its disgusting and so are you for turning a blind eye.

    This was amazing. And accurate. Hell, I live in the province with the highest population of first nations in the world and my teachers during racism and history segments would act like 1. they were talking only to white kids on the topic and that any kid who wasn't white just... wasn't present, like totally blocked them out like they were pieces of air and 2. racism could only happen to black people. Great combo, really.

      Emil652 I always like the thought of having a team called the cave men. They will have blond hair and blue eyes and with a club. After all white people where genetically designed to live in caves (white skin to absorb sun light, blue eyes to see better in the dark, small jaws to digest softer foods, thin nose due to the lack of rich air) so it can't be offensive right?

    Racism is an idea; you can't stop an idea, however you can stop discrimination such as the blatant usage of the Native American Race in the naming of sports teams.

    • @sansrhymes
      @sansrhymes 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Close, but no cigar. Racism isn't an idea, it's a systematic form of oppression that is sanctioned by popular belief and policy. Believe it or not, the effects of racism can be reduced through prudent policy making, as was done during the civil rights movement.

    • @ramenzombie4383
      @ramenzombie4383 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Sans Racism is a belief that you're superior to another race. You can't stop people in believing their beliefs. Point being there is a difference between racism and discrimation.

    • @creatingpulsars9979
      @creatingpulsars9979 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      jesse c You're fine in your intentions here but your statement that racism is an idea is false. You are thinking of prejudice. Racism is what Sans talking about, "a systematic form of oppression". This isn't the dictionary definition but in academia and within the social justice sphere of discourse, Racism and Sexism are both about a lot more than prejudice or even discrimination. It's about the power to oppress and that is why you hear people saying, "reverse racism doesn't exist" A black person can be prejudice against a white person but they do not have the social power to be racist against a white person. Same with men and women.
      Prejudice is an idea, and we can not stop an idea (although if we work towards a more just society and culture of tolerance and understanding, it is possible to make such hateful ideas less frequent). You were correct in your meaning, but your wording was incorrect.

    Well put together for being just about sports. But to be more accurate to historical and yet still contemporary talks about race, this could use a Kanye West-level intrusion. Something like, "Yo everyone not white, I’m really sad for you, Imma let you finish, but Black people had one of the worst oppressive experiences of all time." To which a Native American person would cut in and subvert: "Yo African American dude, I’m really sad for you, too, Imma let you finish, but Native American populations not just risked but nearly experienced total genocide, lost the overwhelming majority of their home land, are slowly losing all of their heritage as young people lose interest in history despite attempts to hold on, have the highest prevalence of mental distresses, and experience the highest rates of crime. These things aren't supposed to boil down a pissing match over who has it worse. Worse serves nothing. We can either dwell on what's wrong or dwell on fixing it, ideally without screwing over undeserving people. Seriously though, change the names of those fucking sports teams..."

    This was not on point, the Chicago Blackhawks are named for Chief Black Hawk who inhabited the Mississippi Valley In the ILL. area in the 1800's No different than the Seminole tribe who are honored by Florida St. I don't see how the word Chief is racist, since I heard it in reference to someone who is in charge, such as a Master Chief in the Military

      You mean the Fighting Irish and the Celtics.
      1. The Irish aren't a race.
      2. Both of those institutions chose their mascots because of their heritage. They didn't choose a cartoon stereotype of a group not represented in their student body or metropolitan demographics.
      3. Even if 1. and 2. weren't true, there is no swell of support for changing those names amongst Americans, Irish or otherwise.

    This is great and sending a great message. Although it doesn't include any white people speaking out to stop racism. In my opinion it would make a big impact if white people would also speak out to stop racism in sports because the white people were the ones being racist in this instance.

    I think they're being a little too sensitive.
    First off, I don't know why this video is mentioning the NBA, because none of the team names are potentially racist. Someone might try to argue that the name "Celtics" is racist against Irish people, but even then I would think that they are forcing it. The name "Celtics" only becomes a racial issue once somebody tries to make it a racial issue.
    Second, if names like the "Chiefs", or the "Braves", or the "Blackhawks" are racist, does that mean that the "Vikings" is racist? Or the "Knicks"? What if there was a team named the "Shamans"? Or the "Priests"? Can't have it both ways.
    However, I do agree that using mascots of Native Americans could be racist, as well as the name "Redskins". Even Obama wanted them to change the name.

    • @emilywillen508
      @emilywillen508 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that people don't realize that these names are racist because they don't understand the context of how they're racist. It's not just a name to indigenous people. The terms like Chiefs and Blackhawks are sacred to indigenous peoples, so to put it in colonial terms, it might be perceived as sacrilegious. Not only this, but it continues stereotypes as these names usually come with racist acts like the tomahawk chop. Although a poor example, altogether, it might be the equivalent of a depiction of a priest (a chief, in this context) mascot touching a child sexually (the continued stereotype).

    • @seattlefloyd

      The word "Viking" is not a racial slur. The word derives from the Norse word "víkingr," which means seafarer or warrior who goes overseas.
      The word "redskin" has been used almost exclusively as a derogatory slur for over a couple hundred years. Comparing the two terms is disingenuous, at best.
