Another gunbuster reference is involved in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot during Type C's transformation sequence, where the character grabs and rotates a mechanical release to transform the mecha during a cut, framed identically to the one in the famous gattai scene during the climactic battle of Gunbuster.

This is old, but meh, it bears repeating:
The game is heavily inspired by Radiant Silvergun - large portions of its plot were inspired from that game, and anyone who played Silvergun will recognize the style of the Boss intro text.
There's a segment loosely based off the "high speed" sections that appear in every Gradius game.
    The Space Invaders/Missile Command Boss.
THE UNDERTALE BOSS HOW DO YOU MISS THE UNDERTALE BOSS COME ON!
The final boss not only has a Touhou-esque theme, but the hand projectiles are referencing Esp Ra De.
The really real end credits show what appear to be parodies of box art. I only recognize one: One that is parodying Ketsui, another Bullet Hell by Cave.

The first boss, the big bomber ship is actually a ref to the first boss from Guxt. Big Zan is a reference to the fake final boss of Cho Ren Sha (this is more evident in earlier versions of ZeroRanger back when it was call "FinalBoss"), in fact its little minions are the player ship from that game, the secret ships that drop bonuses are the final boss ship and the big tankier ships that show up in stage 3 are the red ships that drop items in Cho Ren Sha... there's a lot of Cho Ren Sha in this game is what I'm getting at. Finally, the Onion Giant from the second stage of the 2nd loop is pretty clearly a reference to the God Warrior from Nausicaa. The boss parade is full of references.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioning this, as it was my first "oh, references!" moment when playing the game:
When you're sent to the past, to restart the game (I think this happens after the boss rush + monk fight) you see several circles or "portals" briefly appear on screen, during your time travel. These circles show different graphics that are backgrounds from classic shmups. This is only from the top of my head, so maybe this info is not 100% accurate, but these are the games graphics I remember seeing:
    -Galaga (multi colored stars BG)
    -Xevious (Nazca lines style figure)
    -1942 / 1943 (aircraft carrier)
-Star Force (Square metal tiles on asteroids and stars BG)
    -Gradius (Moai statues)
-Slap Fight (Or Truxton/Tatsujin... could be either) - (X-shaped metal grid on top of a rocky terrain)
And then there's 2 that I don't think I recognize, not from a quick glance at least. Maybe someone can help identifying those!

  • @mln2764

The witch that appears in stage 3 may also be a reference to the WonderWitch from (the company Qute, who published the game) Eschatos.
Also, some of the high score names might reference other video game songs:
    Erupter - Battle Garegga
    Pulse - Cave Story?
Nitro Rider - Mega Man 10
Opus 13 - Castlevania Rondo of Blood?
    Survive - Eschatos
Ray Future - Flame Zapper Kotsujin?
There were some more on the one player results screen as well, but I can't be arsed to delete my save to try and figure them out.

There's a bunch you missed, several of which you won't find unless you download the free version called FinalBOSS, which uses the original sprites and music. The sprites were all updated for the release version, as a good number weren't just references to other games, but straight up used redrawn versions of copyrighted stuff, which is why you can see it in the free version, but not the for-profit version.
The Stage 1 boss is a direct reference to the Stage 1 boss in Guxt: An airplane with four turrets that all aim at y ou and are destructible, a main body that can be broken open, and when breaking open the main body, the boss's attack patterns become more complex and dangerous, and destroying the main body a second time is the way to beat it.
1-3's final boss is the final boss of Cho Ren Sha 68k
      The random mechs are Zakus
The shot pattern on the Type B is the shot pattern from Cho Ren Sha 68k's fighter
The Type B's lockon attack is the same as the laser weapon from Crimzon Clover.
These are just a few of the ones I caught, I know there are a ton I missed, too.

    • @slavkei
      @slavkei 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Also, the "It's Showtime!" reference isn't actually to Big O- it's to Cho-Ren-Sha, where there is a boss rush stage that starts with the phrase "Show TIme!"
And finally, you missed that using melee weapons in the final fight of 2-3, you can recreate the Giga Drill duel between Razengann and Guren Lagann. :D
Once you play through FinalBOSS, youll see a lot more hidden references that aren't as obvious in the commercial release version.

While the origin of the references traces back to dodonpachi, I think the dream sequence is at least partially referencing crimson clover as well. crimson clover also has the same pattern of tanks moving down at an angle, and the fire pattern of your ship is almost identical between the dream sequence and crimson clover.

Something else I noticed is I think Erasure's dialogue before the final sequence references Gradius V.
First of all, there's the ship's computer sending you back in time at the end of both games. The future Vic Viper says "I don't have much time so listen closely", and the computer says "that is a highly dangerous operation", both very similar to Erasure's lines.

  • @legless8528
    @legless8528 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There are also a couple of Hellsinker. references thrown about. I didn't know if they were really true or unintentional at first, but after seeing System Erasure's tweet about Hellsinker being on sale, I was sure it was completely intentional.
2-1 boss's final phase references Scarlet Queen's Soul Volatiling secret phase from Hellsinker. The bobbing movement and the missile spam attack are the telltale signs.
For both charge shots, if you hold down the button for an entire minute, you shoot an extra-powerful shot. This references the character DEADLIAR's 60 second blade attack, where holding main-shot for 60 seconds causes an extremely powerful barrage of blade slashes.
There are 4 main menu themes, just like in Hellsinker, that are unlocked as you progress through the game. Not entirely sure if this one is intentional.
Bit of a stretch, but the end of first loop boss rush could be a reference to Perpetual Calendar, the Segment 5 boss in Hellsinker. (i.e. a central machine throwing 4 other bosses at you)
There are 8 stages in total..? Does that count? Plus a hidden final phase? Really pushing it, but I don't know any other 8 stage shmups...

    • @doopu
      @doopu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Good spots - I've been trying to get into Hellsinker but it's such a timesink (heh). I think a few of the things you've mentioned are definitely related to that game.
The charge shots are an interesting one, because since at least R-Type Final back in 2003 there's been a charge beam you had to hold for 45 (!) seconds... But the extra fifteen seconds makes it more Hellsinker-y for sure. Maybe a reference-in-a-reference..?
I suspect the eight stages are more to do with the Buddhist noble eightfold path, which I'm (finally) hoping to talk about soon..! Thanks for the comment!

    • @legless8528
      @legless8528 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@doopu Right, the eightfold path! Interestingly, I believe Buddhism is also a prevalent theme in Hellsinker as well, super interesting and I totally forgot about it!
Also, with the charge shot - it's probably that kind of nested reference in shmups - very clever if they really made a double-homage that way.
What a great game, I regret not playing it seriously earlier, but I've been having a lot of fun routing out score routes and such - the level design is a very underrated aspect of the game too. Just so good on all fronts

I didn't see these already in comments, so:
    - The name of the track "Apprivorange" used in the transformation sequence is a reference to the anime Star Driver. "Apprivoise" is the keyword said by the protagonist to call his dueling mecha to him.
    - One model of the mid-strength enemy fighters (which reveal skull faces with their armor broken) resembles the TwinBee ships from the Konami series of the same name (and others). (This may be more of a "your mileage may vary")

Enemies prior to the Big Zan resembles the Zanki, player ship on Cho Ren Sha 64k

I'm a bit late, but there's one other bit to that Gurren Lagann drill reference (or perhaps you didn't cover it for the sake of letting people figure it out).
I don't want to spoil it in plain sight, so pardon me while I make space and shove this
    into
    read more.
    Should be good now.
Fun thing about the drill is that Grapefruit, as far as I'm aware, will mimic the melee powerup that you took in the first loop when it's finally time to fight them.
In the case of the sword, there's a bit of dueling and projectile deflecting you can perform.
For the drill, however? You get something reminiscent of the series climax of Gurren Lagann, as you're able to clash drills with Grapefruit, which causes torrents of bullets to fly at you from the sides of the screen. If you successfully survive the clash, Grapefruit's giant drill shatters, and they go with it.
    Neat video. Thanks for sharing!

The witch is probably a reference to the WonderWitch, a combination mascot for Qute and the name of a dev kit made by Qute for the Wonderswan Color. Qute are the developers of Judgement Silversword and Eschatos (in fact, WonderWitches make recurring appearances in Eschatos.) The fact that the achievement for finding the witch is the name of Eschatos' ending theme makes this almost certain

I can't believe I didn't include the Space Invaders reference, it's so obvious..! Apparently there's a lot of Radiant Silvergun references too, but I was only working off the stuff I personally recognised. From the games you listed, it looks like there's still loads of stuff for me to work through before I can consider myself well-versed in shmuppage..! You missed a Gurren Lagan reference. The loop 2 Grapefruit theme “Sky xxxx Days” is a reference to the opening theme.

There's like 3 back to back Gainax references in the first Grapefruit encounter.
He fails to mention that it straight up has an AT Field too.

2:58 I was thinking it's a reference to Escatos' bonus witch things, considering how charge shot works simular-esh to shield from that game

Why wouldn't the laser be from big zan? If you take too long to kill him, he uses that same laser to kill you.

If you're somehow unable to just put the word in Google Translate and click the megaphone to know how it's pronounced then what the fuck are you doing...
Almost no content creator on this site even bothers trying to pronounce other languages right
