There are a plethora of repairers on YT who do gfx card videos but none get the right mix of technical details, content length, visual indulgence and banter as you do. Others have attitudes and arrogance that just isn't here which makes the whole experience curiously enjoyable. And that you haven't done this for long on YT is exceptional. Keep it up!

  • @soupwizard

Since there was so much thermal paste when you opened it, I'd say a previous owner changed the pads and got the thickness wrong, not gigabyte. But... is the reason a previous owner would open a gigabyte card up to change pads is that the original gigabyte pads sucked, or were placed badly?

It's uncommon, but sometimes, the manufacturer forgets to put the pads on the card. See some of the other videos on this channel. Even EVGA forgot one. I've seen it with one of my GPUs before when repasting, and it is hard to get the right thickness if you don't have calipers or shims and the manufacturer refuses to tell you (looking at you ASUS).

these cards on release didn't have thermal pads or the ones that they came with were crap, the result was memory temps of 100c+. people took it upon themselves to put new pads/better quality in but where there's room for mistakes some people will make them. i personally own a 12g model of this card and it has no overheating issues as far as i can tell, 72c gpu core and 82c memory max under full sustained load

Can confirm, that thermal pad thickness matters. All it takes is just 0,5mm thicker pads than required and you may no longer be able to make the cooler touch the core.
Due to this, you may require various pad thickness for single GPU.
For example my 6600XT requires 1mm pads on VRAM, 1,5mm on VRM on the cooler side and 1,5mm VRAM, 3mm VRM on backplate side. When i tried to use 1,5mm on VRAM thinking the pressure will push it, the cooler was no longer touching the core. Also depends on pad consistency. Harder pads will have to be thinner, while softer pads can be thicker.
Always think ahead and buy more pads just to test, if there is contact everywhere, which will require multiple assemblies and disassemblies of the GPU. Just measuring the old pads can have various results due to stock pads often being different size, than those available on the market.
Gigabyte had top-notch cooling solution a few gens back. My GTX 970 G1 Gaming was an excellent GPU. I got it used, gamed on it for 2 years, did some bios modding (requirement, since Gigabyte tends to set their fans low rpms too high and the card was noisy in idle). I also disabled stock boost limit, baked in stock boost clock. As a result of this, the card real boost got unlocked and that GPU was boosting up to 1,49GHz, basically up to its voltage and power limits.
The card was still working, when i sold it.

Generally gigabyte cards qre using bad OEMs for thermal pads, I've had and seen other people with the same issue of leaky pads, during only 2 months of ownership and a full time job not using the computer, my thermal pads leaked pretty bad, cleaned up all the liquid oil/grease from the sweaty pads and replaced the pads with decent gelid thermal pads. I wasn't mining either, other videos have shown what mining on gigabyte cards do.

  • @y_zass
    @y_zass ปีที่แล้ว

They made a mess of that card... The caps don't have thermal pads on them stock, whoever replaced the thermal pads originally put too many back on. The VRAM chips get 2mm thick pads, the power stages/MOSFETs/chokes get 1mm. I think putting pads on the caps could actually do more harm than good, I bet they run hotter with them on than off because without they don't make contact with the heatsink.

Heavy. Causing PCB to crack. Very common issue with gigabyte that is also result of cheaper build PCB compared to EVGA.
EVGA 3090TI with HUGE and HEAVY heat sink will not crack but gigabyte 3070 ti with lighter heat sink will.
Zotak is even worse. Dont buy anything that heavy from zotak.
PCB can only be so thick, so material choice is critical.

Either buy the cheapest thermal pads you can find but of all sizes (thickness) ranging from 0.5 mm up to 3 mm and compare them with the ones already installed on the graphics card, or buy a feeler gauge so you can measure the gap between the heatsink and the various components (memory, mosfets etc)!
A word of advice though: once you find the correct thickness don't cheap out on the thermal pads! Buy either thermal grizzly, alphacool, fujipoly or arctic (they are cheap but decent ones)!
Forget about thermalright, gelid and other generic made in china brands!
