    You create the environment. Have a reason for skaters to chill. Be located next to the local skate park.

    Just started skating again, 23 and being an adult buying my own stuff as oppose to 13 allows me to protest and vote with my dollar & that’s exactly what I did. Ocean Beach skate shop may not be the cheapest but it’s my neighborhood and that’s where I want my money. The point to it all is if I have the means to help the local shop by spending a few extra bucks so be it.

    Love that! All the shops I worked I knew I was making them a brother or sister in skating when I set up their skateboards

    used to go to boarders in the mall only cause
    1. it was nearby
    2. i had friends that actually skated that worked there
    3. and they would hook me up fat.
    now all the homies quit the job and everyone that now works there is just another wannabe kid wearing yeezys and a dad hat. the other day i made the mistake of going to buy a new board at boarders only cause every skateshop in LA was closed and noticed the mall was open til 9. I had the mentality of "get in, get out", but as soon as i walked in, the 5+ workers that were working there didn't even acknowledge me. I was one of the 3 customers that was in there and i thought maybe they were busy so i took a couple minutes to find the board i wanted so i could just leave asap. after 10 minutes of standing there looking dumb i still dont get any attention. they knew i was there, but continued to do pointless labor like refolding clothes or some shit. it got to the point where i walked behind the counter to grab a t tool to fix my hardware and bounced. I waited til my next off day to hit up a local shop instead and thought i havent gone to kingswell in a while and its only a 20 minute drive. got there, boom, dj was the man. he definitely reminds you of how skateshops used to be and how they should be. he immediately welcomes me, and he noticed i wasnt digging the boards on the wall so he took the time to take out his new shipment of polars which was wat i was looking for. kingswell is now my shop and now is the time everyone should support these mom and pop shops. supply and demand.

    The only good thing about a mall shop is you usually don't get judged by your appearance.There have been instances where I've walked in to a local shop and i wasn't dressed like everyone else that had on high waters doing no complys,and they tried to sell me on some decks that were sitting on the wall for who knows how long.. sometimes you find a place where the people are cool from the jump but some places don't want you around unless you dress,act ,and skate like them.

    • @walmartian
      @walmartian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yea the club house shit is retarded and they're fucking themselves out of business.. at the same time tho some random customers roll into a small shop with some kind of expectation and attitude like the shop is a corporation that has to bow to them. i would say just barrel thru their attitude a couple times if they're still acting hard on the 3rd then fuck them. once you actually by something then attitudes can change. the owner/worker sometimes are salty when business is slow, and another window shopper is hard to get excited about

    If only core community and shops kooked big sports brands and wouldn't carry their shoes and apparel, we wouldn't have double standards and we wouldn't have this problem.

    • @walmartian
      @walmartian 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i dont really see a problem if people care more about skating than they do brands there is really not a problem except some guy in an ivory tower wearing an apple watch thinks they're not making enough money off of the common skateboarder

      @@walmartian at the beginning Nike had minimums that shops had to carry. A lot of core shops went In debt and closed because of it. I'd say the big brands messed things up a little more than people like to acknowledge

    He's ignoring price. I'm not gonna pay 100$ for some cheap Vans at my local shop when I can get them for 50$ at Zumiez. I'm not paying 100$ a deck when I can get them for 50$. Sorry, but that's what it all comes down to. Local shops vibing you out just makes the decision easier. He can say his store doesn't do that but most still do and for that they dont deserve to be in business.
    Just let go of the past, local shops offer nothing. Cheaper prices means more people buying stuff and supporting skateboarding in other ways.

    • @ssquiggss
      @ssquiggss 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your shops obviously suck I guess. The shop I go to called Switch - Skate and Snow always has sale decks which are pro models and regular pro models. The trucks, wheels and bearings are the same price they would be in a commercial store and as for the shoes, the prices are the same at the shop as they would walking into a commercial store.

    Roger over stepped his bounds in my opinion. And I don’t like the way he put DJ on the hot-seat hence DJ’s reply was eloquent and powerful. It really put the whole thing into perspective, since The Nine Club is part of the problem. of Big skateboarding vs. local/grassroots.

      being underground brand nerd is no longer meaningful when they sell etnies and ES at the mall, nike SBs are solid the drama of brands died with the 90s, dont let kooks get close enough to start a conversation about clothing and wear w/e u want

    Make the skate shop have a bar and grill. People will come for food and drinks, and then may buy some skate shit.

    • @walmartian
      @walmartian 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea a skate bar would be sick, just put it near any major park, have a mini ramp inside, old school 720 stand up game, play skate vids on the big screens, play skate on a ps4, furniture made out of old decks. dark and divey to scare away the chads, $3 shots, a stage, pool table.
