Trey absolutely does NOT get the credit he deserves for his playing. He is a complete and total master in every possible way on the instrument, yet unless you’re in the jam band scene you’ve probably never even heard of him before. I mean, his playing in the video alone demonstrates his total command of the instrument but he is far from the mainstream even in the guitar community. Coming from another jam band guitarist, he is just super, super, super stupidly good. Jimmy Herring is another generational talent on guitar who also doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
@@Tfististhis it actually really is insane. He can play just about every genre and even do a better job in that genre than some other guitarists who just focus on that one single genre. Funk, rock, blues, prog, jazz, hard rock, reggae, folk, and Spanish styles are what immediately comes to mind in terms of genres that Trey has basically mastered. Like I said, even in the guitar community he doesn’t get very much love at all, which truly is crazy. I think this word gets used too much, but Trey 100% is a MASTER on guitar in every single way.

The first and the best!!!!! Belly full of fungus, Fishman side in the front. I was here and I remember how fun it was when Trey shouted, play it Leooooooo! Forgot about that til I just lived it again... sometimes TH-cam is beautiful. ❤️
god this video makes me so happy. seeing the boys so happy is great. i just got back from spac weekend and it was great. so glad these men are still together playing music for us.
Amen! Was just watching this and thinking I've never seen a group of guys so obviously feeling the joy of creating music together! I was at this show and didnt have this great view. But it was still electrifying to be a member of that organism. The crowd was so primed for the music after the long days in the sun. Those were crazy days where at times you might reasonably have forgotten where you were and what you were doing. At those times I was always reminded of the lyric "If you get confused listen to the music play." 🎉

I think it's a reference to Leo Kottke, a friend of the band's and a great guitarist in his own right. They also did some recording with him. Can't remember the name of it.
The tone is coming from the unique full hollowbody guitar. Historically very few if any famous guitarists aside from jazz players used one. And no one ever played one like this, a fully hollow with a small body and a longer stratocaster string length. It blends the fat plush hollowbody sound with a vivid brightness. Totally unique sound that's oh so sweet.

I love you guys. That was what I needed read. The forum show on 7/27 saved my life.
Amen to that
Specifically this version of this song
Lift each other up.
I remember being 17 at this festival. Drove with friends from Maryland. Yamar was a highlight for me.
it's that damn smile from trey that always brings me back
Wish I had a mustard colored velour button up. That shirt wails!
that shirt was epic

25 years of listening to Phish and it never ever gets old. Thank you Phish! There is still faith in humanity.
30 years old now and feel the same way brother
I love Trey's sound currently, but damn his guitar had such a bite to it back then.
This is a cover of a song by a Bahamian artist, Cyril Ferguson, aka Dry Bread.
Look him up!!!
I was there !!! Epic weekend full of shenanigans
I love it. No phones, just people focused and engaged with music and friends. Exactly how I remember it.

Haven't listened to this in over a decade! Sounds great.
Another epic solo from Trey. Best version of this song for sure.
One of his best filmed solos ever and def the best Ya Mar in my opinion as well.
@@jackeminor def the best YaMar solo ever
One of my favorite Ya Mar's, Trey killed it with ease, plays it like it ain't no thang!
Nothing makes me happier than this!
Don’t ask her what it was tell her what it is
Facts!!
trey killed it he does a crazy solo and doesnt even look at his fingers love it
I was there, It was an amazing experience I will never forget.
One of my favorite Phish tunes
The original song came from The Bahamas 🇧🇸 #242 all the way 🎵
I wonder if Trey has seen himself in this in recent times and been like, "DAMNNNN I really sliced that one up!!"
They still sound this good today. All summer they kicked ass.
Shit they tear it up now more than ever. Sober Phish = amazingly in sync Phish.
As much as I like the now phish, it’s ridiculous to compare now to 1996. The shit was fresh and adventurous and way less about money.
@@tommygrubbs2053I agree! But it's never been about money! 😊

What a weekend this was!!!! Seeing these videos is great, really brings me back.
Sigh, was too young to have been attending Phish shows in '96....tis a shame. However, thanks for a great upload!
Same, I hadn’t been born yet unfortunately
trey's sound and tone is spot on! I wish he would go back to this setup!
4:26 listen to that bass lick!
chord progress is one thing.. making it sould like this is a whole different place
Probably my favorite Ya Mar of theirs. Unreal.
Undoubtedly one of my favorite songs.
They were so tight back then. That was like my 5th show. What a time.
First show I saw after Jerry died. Glad I did, didn't think anything would ever fill that gap.
TH-cam needs a double thumbs up button for videos like this.
not sure what I like more, the song or the velour..
I was there, second row and I swear to god Trey looked right at me!
Soliloquoy of Trey at 5:44 Masterful!

I'm in there somewhere. If you was there I salute you!
This was the last time I remember Trey reciting Gamehendge for all of our fragile eggshell minds lol
Sounds real hoppy and giddy, like it much very so.
Best video on the internet
Best Ya Mar ever. There shall be no discussion.
Fishman is such a good drummer keeping perfect time the whole way through
That chord progression is so simple but so good.
the chord progression is simple but the strumming pattern is so difficult i find
@@herbythechef7624 oh yea. lol. makes you feel like you only have one brain hemisphere.
Genius.
I like Trey's tone from this period. Much cleaner than his current sound IMO.

I was at this epic party💖
Is there a better phish-ya mar? Longer ones sure? But sounding one? I’m not saying there isn’t I’m asking. Cause I love this track.
I wish he would. This run is completely amazing. I miss it.
I was there
@Yoseman1 you caught one of the best shows ever.
that riff that page is playing just sets the groove for the whole song
I'm out there somewhere! ;-)
i totally agree, trey and the boys make everything they do look ridiculous easy just one more reason to luv em
At approximately 2:56, a serial killer is behind Jon Fishman.
That's just me trying to figure out the drums. Lol.
Camera man y'all
BUTTER
Great playing from everyone smooooth ya mar
So cool!
“Ya got a nice shiny sports car
You keep it very clean”
Miss you, PapaBear.
Thats the Trey i love...even if he wasnt ever really high he was stoned to the bone in his mind. Long live Phish.
I feel like there aren't enough frets and then Trey says fuck you
if you look at the whole career , i think this could be their best week as Phish
close encounters of the third kind tease @ 7:20
yo, doing phish-alien related research, any other links to stuff like that?
i don't get it... Please school me...
dont ask him what it was, tell him what it is! that goes such a long way

so good
I wish they still played with the same enthusiasm
I still don't know how Jon does this, insane limb independence.
There's actually been three I believe. Two Koa's, and now the Ocedoc!
You can hear trey smiling in his voice
when fishman did the vacuum it went nuts
Man, Mike is stylin...
dat bass
Mike doesn't skip leg day
5:00 - 6:16
0:00 - 0:45
end at 8:27
starting at 7:34 you can hear trey making noises when hes playing. then agin at 7:38.
at exactly 6:00 we all put down our guitar....... not just me.
Anyone know how trey gets that tone¿ I've always wondered

I think the pickups are a little hot but yes it does sound very good. Just a little on the hot side. I miss this tone a bit!
