I remember traveling in Italy on a High School trip in 98. I brought my journal and a CD (yes a CD) that had ALL my favorite live YEMs on it. I'd listen to it on the bus between cities trying to channel Trey and Fishman on their trip to Italy when this masterpiece was scribed. I then understood the freedom and creativity they had when you totally immerse yourself into a different culture and let it release emotions within you that you didn't know you had. We finished that trip in Florence (where the Uffizi gallery is). I ditched my classmates for an afternoon and wandered the alleys there and found a pawn shop serving espressos. A couple espressos later for the free spirited 18 year old me and I left with a $100 nylon string guitar. I walked back to the Uffizi Square and saw a group of travelers singing along to a guitar player, so I lifted my guitar with the universal head nod of "may I join" Turns out the guitar player was from my exact state (NH) back in the USA. We dropped into playing "No Woman No Cry" so that EVERYONE could comprehend the language of Bob Marley. Within minutes there had to be 100s of travelers from ALL over the world singing along with us. Later that year, I used this experience to write my college application essay and was granted early acceptance to UVM in Burlington VT for the class of 98. I'm 42 NOW and this experience is forever engrained in my heart, mind and soul. Thank you PHISH for being a magical weaver of life experiences that has transcended space time since my first show in 95.
Has to be?? He IS the most underrated drummer.. Fishman’s playing is adaptable to any genre of music and often sounds as if there just has to be multiple drummers involved (when listening w/out video).. but it’s just the one and only. The energy it takes to play certain sections is truly unimaginable sometimes and he plays them so smoothly ..this mf is an incredible talent and once in a lifetime opportunity, as you can say that pretty much about any other member of this quartet ✌️🔥
Ill never forget standing near the top of the lawn after this show. The tour buses left right away and pulled off up the hill next to the venue and the crowd went nuts cheering so loud! Such a great time!
Graduated high school in 1990 - Such good times, great people and AMAZING music. True talent is often too obscure for the masses unfortunately. Play on guys, play on....
I was reading an article about the ten classic rock bands that sounded better live than on a studio recording and because I'd stopped listening to rock music after transitioning to r&b vocal groups, I decided to listen to this selected song by Phish and became an instant fan. They had a lot of fun movements and cool sounds that grabbed my attention. Now I'm going to several videos to see how you guys perform in 2024!
I was at this concert laying down under one of the walkways going up to the upper level, peacefully enjoying this song. A year later my knee was broken at the same venue, also during a Phish concert there.
Phish broke curfew to play this for us, closing out an incredible 3 night run. Heading into Set 2, we all thought we were getting a YEM...we were due. As curfew started to come closer, they played Hood > Cavern and we all thought, perfect, plenty of time to get of stage, come back and finish this weekend of with a proper YEM... but then after Cavern they went into Bowie. Now I am not one to ever complain about a Bowie, but this all but sealed the deal for a short quick encore. Still an amazing weekend. They came back on stage at about 11:55pm. When they busted into YEM, the place exploded. This YEM probably cost them $15,000 - $20,000.
Trey is SO locked in here in this jam is unreal!! He's so genuinely enjoying himself while he's dancing that its fucking amazing, I LOVE THIS BAND WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING!!!!!!
I remember the first time I heard Junta back in ‘88 or ‘89. It had just come out and my buddy Mike said “dude you HAVE to check these guys out” and we sat in his car listening to the cassette smoking a fat joint and my head just absolutely exploded while listening to Divided Sky then this one came on and I went from meltdown to groove. Just stunned.
That lift off that Page does for Trey from 15:06 to about 15:15 and then Trey hits "The note" and Page goes into the classic piano/organ combo ... chills every time
From 12:05 - 15:35 is some of the best type I jamming I've ever heard. Maybe not as whimsical and exploratory as their most creative jam excursions, but I'll be damned if that's not some of the best guitar Trey has ever played. Tasteful, patient, dynamic. I'll never get over how transformative and narrative his best improvisational work is. There's something almost plot-driven about it, full of conflicts and resolutions, lulls and climaxes, melodic characters and themes that return and reference each other throughout -- he builds a story through tone, melody, and the dynamics that weave them together. The debate on best players or best improvisers of all time is endless and totally moot - but for my money, no one in the world can build and release musical tension on guitar quite like Trey!
One of my favorite Phish moments for sure... He's so locked in... every note he plays during those 2 minutes is so phucking perfect.. Also lets not forget the launch pad Page builds for him right before the peak... so insanely amazing
This song/video captures everything that is Phish and what makes them so much fun. It's like a singing circus on acid. Nonsensical Dr. Suess-like characters come to life. You certainly get your moneys worth at a concert, no doubt about it. Thanks boyz!!!
I got stunned into the pavilion during this show, also it was my time “following” the band. Took a train to nyc to meet up with my buddy, went to jones beach 7/4 then trucked up to Saratoga for 3 days 😎
I was on Phish tour in 97. Miss those days. As he was a philosophy major those days were so good. The band was extremely tight. This is about as close as I can find live.

But tons of my friends were into them and ass my musical tastes broadened, I eventually starting realizing that there was something there for me. I was intrigued by the melding of multiple genres and the progression of these epic jams. A lot of my favorite bands are all bands that became an acquired taste and rewarded repeat listens, and Phish turned out to be the same deal. I heard a few more tunes a few years later and noticed the infectious groove in their jams, then I watched a live video of Carrini and have been hooked form there! That is the song that sold me!
+weathley13 I live in NYC now, but I went to school in New York State, Oneonta to be exact. That's where I met most of my friends who are into Phish. Me and a buddy from college saw Trey Anastasio Band in Brooklyn a few weekends ago.
+weathley13 That's awesome! I lived in Serbia in high school and my father and I drove all the way to Aviano Italy during a school break. I 'd say that's pretty northern! Beautiful country BTW!
It won't there are so many good jam bands out there. To me there are only a few guitarists out there as good as Trey, (not counting metal where its a lot of whanking on the guitar). Derek Trucks and my personal No. 1 Warren Haynes, big ABB fan, and a little biased.
Awesome! I grew up loving and still love Yes. Been to a concert with Ian Anderson!!!!seems these talented men grew up with parents that played Yes and other great bands from our time...they surely were positively influenced!

As an old man I can't help but hear tones of YES in this music. I like it and I'm sorry I slept on Phish!

Ever see Fishman get off the drums and sing Elvis' "Suspicious Minds" with Trey on drums? What a cool version.

This is one of those jams that you never get tired of....
I drove around the block 3 times on my way home from work, just bc I couldn't cut this song short. Best band of all time.
That's fucking awesome
6-11-94 version of YEM turned me into a real Phish devotee. Soundboard recording from Red Rocks.
Ditto. It's dirty. So dirty.
2nd best

The Sanford and Son theme worked in there made me smile! Definitely an amazing band!

How friggin brilliant is it to jump on mini trampolines? These guys are amazing!!!

Epic dance show!! Great hippie moves!!
When he hits that chord coming off the trampoline it gets me every time.
Great moment.
Dig their music or not, they are one of the greatest bands of all time. They can play anything. And after 30 years they still love what they do.
They cant do Genesis......lol
Been a jam band junkie since I was 17 and I'm 63😊
Trey's dancing is awesome haha love it
@Certinho so white. It's ok to be white.
Wypipo rhythm
Trey busts a move at the end. Great to see them feeling so free. What a wonderful band :)
One of the best in my life.........he kills it
This is the definition of the band. Everything about them is right here. To the uninitiated: start here - the fun never ends.

Fluff head and divided sky also rank amongst the best , every best song is pre breakup

So amazing similar but about 8 years later
I was introduced to Phish bt listening to Junta in 93. The jam in Divided Sky had me hooked.

I was at 7/6/12 and 7/7/12 but missed this heady show.... Never miss a Sunday Funday at SPAC!!!!!
Great jam and surprisingly the first time I've ever witnessed a trampoline integrated into a musical performance.
9:41 seeing Gordo crack up Trey with his bass makes me incredibly happy😂
Phish your awesome and I hope you guys never break I've loved you since I was 2 now I'm 10 the first song i listened to is ocelot
