    This week I attempt to create a grand tourer electric skateboard. At first I try car batteries with a Boosted Board to extend the range, but I discover I can charge the board with foldable solar panels that fit in my rucksack. Thus, the limitless range electric skateboard was born. To test this out, I attempt to travel from Glasgow to Edinburgh in one day using only the power of the sun.

    • @IQzminus2
      @IQzminus2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I like skateboarding but It must have been so rough standing pretty statically for hours and hours where you can’t even move your feet around that much, while travelling that far and especially for that long.
      And I wouldn’t want to worry about holes and being actively observant about the road for that long either. Bikes can just handle a lot more variation and tougher terrain.
      honestly this might be a better concept for a electric bike, if you want the convince of having a motor.
      Pop out the panels and charge while taking a break or eating something. Have the panels in a small container on the bike itself.
      Could be a pretty good idea for a biking holiday if you know it’s going to be a route with a lot of hills and far between stops in civilisation.

    I think Peter Sripol made a solar panel trailer for unlimited range in an ebike (as long as the sun is shining). Maybe something like that could work with a skateboard, too. If you're going to make charge stops anyway, you wouldn't need to trail all the panels, but even one panel charging all the time would give you significantly more range per charging stop.

An idea for a V2 of your solar system could be mounting panels to your bag and charging a second battery while draining the one on the board. It would take a fair bit more time to charge than the 4 panel system you used but even getting half a charge over hours of riding would help reduce your stop times.

    Well yes, but actually no.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Really the answer is a solid no. You're wasting so much *time* waiting for it to charge, it's pointless. You'd literally be much much faster just taking a bike ride instead. Did you know it takes roughly 17 hours to walk 60 miles? Yeah, you'd arrive around the same time just by walking. In fact, that's electric anything's biggest issue, time to charge sucks. Keep in mind how putting some gas in a car takes like maybe 5 to 10 minutes at worst. And realise how we will never see huge batteries charge within 10 minutes and it couldn't ever be a legit substitute. Yeah it sounds nice that you can charge at home at night through regular power grid. But that's like filling up your car with gas in your home town station, it would simply never be an issue. It only becomes an issue when travelling large distances. And currently the smallest range (as in, worst case scenario) of a single charged battery in electric cars and such suuuucks. The whole emissions thing is also questionable, as electric power still comes from all manner of power plants, including coal power plants and such. And I don't think I have to tell you what kind of a toxic mess batteries are in terms of waste by the time it all breaks or is thrown away. Electric cars do nothing for a better environment.

      @@PHeMoX Actually, look up v3 tesla supercharging. From 0% to around 70% can be charged up in about 15 minutes (extremely high charge current). Also, while you're at it, look up the ranges for teslas, which really aren't much less than most gas cars. Finally, powerplants are much more efficient ways to convert fossil fuels into energy when compared to a combustion engine, therefore saving fuel, and if you retrofit your house with solar, then it truly is totally off the grid

    • @PJ-vz1pu
      @PJ-vz1pu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PHeMoX there are plenty of videos explaining how even if you get electricity from a city that gets its electricity purely from coal plants, it is still more efficient and better for the environment. But you are right about the range problem, at least right now. You’re saying a battery will never charge in ten minutes, but that’s just right now. Technology is evolving fast and you’ll be surprised how soon that is gonna be a reality.
