It's also kinda horrifying when you realize their only weapons are all energy-based, and they are fighting Kremzeek 2.0 with the one thing that will make it more powerful. That's gotta suck. It would be like shooting something that absorbs and feeds off of lead from bullets and kinetic impacts.
Oh boy, what an episode! Written by Donald F. Glut who wrote the novelisation to The Empire Strikes Back, he created a small monkey that nobody would take seriously. So it was up to Simon Furman to say "hold my lager" and practically made a new origin that even Japan preferred at the end of the day, LOL. Just goes to show that what may work for one sci-fi franchise, may not entirely work for another. Still, it was nice that most of the bestial Transformers at the time got a spot light episode. Now unto the animation, according to director Eiji Suganuma, this episode was assigned to Toei, however due to deadlines the animation had to be outsourced to others. Enter; Studio Look who took on the project, as well as some art students fresh out of art school; the International Animation Institute to be exact. That explains why we have a Viking head in space that's supposed to be Unicron's. Though some of the designs seen here, look practically like they were drawn by Masami Ōbari, or at least someone was inspired by his mecha designs. So it's possible Ashi may have also provided a bit of extra animation here, that would make sense as Toei would often outsource to Ashi during their productions of Seasons 1 and 2 of the show. (Thanks TFWiki for finally providing ACURATE information).
This episode has an epic feeling to it like the animators wanted to make it into a high quality movie. Notice the clean lines and panel-lining all across Trypticon at 11:11 which was unecessary but was done anyway? It reminds me of early episode of SDF Macross with all the details on the VF-1 drawn in to convince you its a real spacecraft and not a kid's cartoon version of one. They could have made a direct-to-video animated movie using this episode as a base. If they had remade G1 with this quality that would have been awesome.
@@rickdavis32 The 1980s was the anime boom. If you like the detailed anime look of this episode, please look for "Bubblegum Crisis" (the dark and gritty 80s version not the 90s one - think of the 80s one as Terminator 1 level of darkness). It has a blade runner style universe and some great animation from the 1980s with lot of mechanical detail and lineart in the still drawings. Whenever a scene has a lot of still objects that don't move they use the opportunity to give a really high level of detail in the objects themselves and it ends up looking really cool. Mechs that were once toyish looking becomes these highly complex multipart structures that have internal details and more shading and definition. The Macross Movie "Do you Remember Love" is a great example of what happens when you get a high level of detail + high level of animation frames when there is a tons of money thrown at a project. Now imagine if Hasbro took the "Macross Do you Remember Love?" approach to transformers and made an anime that looked like it came from the 1980s and had large budget. Fans would lose their shit! Although I understand that 3D is the thing these days I miss that grity hand-drawn looks of the 1980s mecha animes like Macross where there is a level of realism that gives it a lived-in look to it. IE high amount of shading and tone, with high mechanical details and smooth motion. (if its a movie - usually tv series only has high detail if the animation is still in that scene due to lower budget)
I remember when this episode first aired when I was in school...even back then I appreciated how much better the animation was in a majority of this episode than almost the entire season.
10:30 interesting how Tornitron took the shape of the Primarcon assistant. I also think the assistant is Primus. I also feel BOTH Unicron origins could be mixed.....after Unicron was put in his asteroid prison, he, using his mental power, looked for a being, or beings, who could help free him. It probably took eons, but he found Primarcron, and through dreams and visions, nudged him to get the inspiration to go to the asteroid Unicorn was trapped in and to begin the process of converting it into a large, machine body. Primus, seeing this, probably was able to control, or convince the Primarcon assistant to intervene....possibly to take the device that would become the matrix, and use it to make it a gateway to the matrix/all spark, and as a device that can kill Unicron. Primus probably saved the Primacron assistant from destruction in return. I THINK, there was a manga about Primacron made in the 80's or 90's, The Universe of Primacron, I believe it was called.
Yes!!! Love this comment. It was later written in that the assistant was actually Primus from when they had the 'only one Unicron and one Primus for every universe' story before the aligned continuity
My theory is Primacron and the Quintessons created Primus and Unicron, as Unicron was shown to have also have been made by Quintessons in a Hasbro Pulse stop motion, and we know the Quintessons created the transformers
The dialogue is really good you really get a sense of who each character is. If I had never seen the series and had my eyes closed you'd get a real sense from what they say and how they say it especially Springer and Rodimus
You can tell the Japanese studio did these episodes the artwork is so much more Crisp Also Predaking is such a Boss no fear true warrior! Slag brief leadership and plan was brilliant as Dinobots go

Very cool how Grimlock saved the day... I think about how, if Wheeljack were still around, he would've most likely invented something to beat the monster... And technically, he did. 😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️😁😁
For some reason, the only episode given to a different animation studio (one that could actually draw) and the most amazing looking one in all of G1 (apart from when Predaking disassembles…) Luckily this was the first episode I bought on VCR, and came with The Girl Who Loved Powerglide…
I love the predacons so much, headstrong turning around saying he'd rather die fighting then razorclaw acknowledging gives me goosebumps. Such a great episode
Best episode of the G1 series. I recorded it on Beta cassette and watched it so much that i ruined the tape. I Prolly seen this episode hundreds of times.
This episode was the best episode of all Transformers ever made and could/should have been a second movie. From the opening with Vince DiCola's attack theme playing as the swoops passed between planets/moons declaring they were coming in for a strike, to the introduction of Tornedron - easily the most powerful 'transformer' in all Transformer universes, getting to see some great battles, combiners, getting the 'primatives' together, to ending with the humour of Grimlock. It just had everything I ever wanted in an episode.
Awesome! This was one of my favorite episodes ever back in the day. Even back then I could tell the quality of animation was something special. It was like watching Transformers the Animated Movie at home. Thanks Hasbro Pulse! BTW all these episodes look fantastic in HD. Does that mean an HD Blu-ray set will be coming soon? Keep up the great work and thanks for the memories!
This episode was visually as close to the animation drawings on the TV Commercials, Transformers Rebirth should have finished off Season 4 looking just like this or looking the same way it did for the episodes on the Return of Optimus Prime; that would have been phenomenal.
I really wish both Headmasters and Masterforce are animated like this too. The delicious proportions and effects always remind me of Machine Robo and Zeta Gundam
Probably not the best origin story for Unicron. You can see why most later on not only prefer to use something more akin to the Marvel Comics origin, but also retroactively declare that the assitant of Primacron was the G1 cartoon version of Primus.
I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I prefer this origin to the "mad god" origin from the comics. It's way less complicated and convoluted.
This episode was so good. A creature far greater than any transformer. Even the planet. And it just about destroys the entire universe. And then grimlock pulls a lever, problem solved... cartoon logic.
Yes, it's, WOW, 35 stinking years later. But, looking at episodes like this, and comparing this animation and soundtrack to most of the absolute turd festival that was the cut rate animation and recycled music of season 3, one can't help even in 2021 to wonder "what if" Sunbow, Hasbro, whomever involved had ponied up a bit more dough to make sure the entire season was this interesting visually and aurally.
Also, gotta love how detailed the animation is in this episode! Seems like a lot of genuine effort was put into this one! But production values aside, I really enjoyed this episode. Because this battle was VERY CLOSE. The Transformers almost lost the battle against a monster twice as dangerous as Unicron, and Grimlock saved the day! Cheers for Grimlock!
I'm gonna be honest: I like it better when Unicron is a god of chaos and Primus' rivial than him being created by an alien scientist. Also I keep forgetting that Sky Lynx is the douchebag of the Autobots.
Yeah I notice that this particular episode of season 3 has better animation than the rest of season 3 episodes, maybe even better than the 1986 movie. XD
I took 2yrs to make the Transformers 86' Movie ,and the animation is WAAAAAAYYYYYY better than this episode and even though the art style animation is great, it's second rate animation .
Best line in Transformer, 15:52 Headstrong: "I detest fleeing! I would rather die fighting!" Razorclaw: "He is right! Predacons, unite!" Predaking: "To the end!"
One of the silliest voice errors was in this one when the voice calls to the Dinobots, "Come Snarl, Sweep, Swoop, and Slag." Who the hell is Sweep? You mean Sludge.
It's insane that the best animated G1 Episode has the most insane and nigh-incomprehensible plot. Weird monkey man shows up with giant Kremzeek, claims he built Unicron, his robot assistant turns into the matrix, then Grimlock switches not-kremzeek from suck to blow.
Slugfest appears two more times: in the crowd shot at 5:48 and when everyone is backing away at 14:58, so I can only assume Overkill is with him. But I do wish we'd seen them more. They should've been able to talk like Ramhorn did IMO.
May I add this episode may be the most important episode of Transformers lore. That muppet Primacron is responsible for Unicron? He's not even a robot.
14:39 Love this so much. Sky Lynx's response to seeing Grimlock (presumably) killed is raw emotion: "Suffer my rage, monster! I will show you no mercy!!" For all his arrogance, he loves all his comrades deeply.

It makes me wonder if we'll see this again, to see Volcanicus, Predicking, Abominis, Skylynx, Tripticon, Cassette Beastformers/Minicons, and Sharkicons in an ultimate fight to save the universe.
Never heard the term Beastformers used before and I like it.
@@PatrickJFurlong-c6z basically a term for transformers with beast modes.
It's also kinda horrifying when you realize their only weapons are all energy-based, and they are fighting Kremzeek 2.0 with the one thing that will make it more powerful. That's gotta suck. It would be like shooting something that absorbs and feeds off of lead from bullets and kinetic impacts.
Though one of the terrorcons uaed rocks
It would be like shooting meat-pies at a fat kid.
@@daanvos194 indeed, burying it might be only way try beat it
It’d be like trying to use gasoline to put out a fire.
@@daanvos194 Props to Hun-Grrr for trying something different, I guess.
This episode was the best drawn out of ALL of the G1 episodes!
i love grimlock "smartest think he has ever Done" i love thats
How about when he created the technobots.
This was most certainly the smartest thing he had ever done when he was dumb.
18:41 this OST goes hard AF, they really was jamming in the 80s😎
This is possibly the BEST episode of the entire series.
I prefer many... S3 has for example dark awakening even if it is retconned.
This and the return of Optimus Prime for me.
There are many, Webworld is also good in S3; Masterbuilder from S2.
Megatrons master plan is my personal favorite
No way. The animation is stunning, but the story is dreadful.
"GRIMLOCK KNOW WHAT HE DOES!" has made me Crack up hysterically for over 30 years
That reverse switch always gets me every time!!!
Soundwave at 5:30. Most glorious animated moments for him in the G1 series. The colors also beautiful here not just the animation!
I just noticed, even his door chest has a hinge never seen before, now that is detail!
They even did his voice justice. With some other post-movie eps you can tell the sound guys didn't care
@@nnthayer yes I was going to say that the processing here is very nuanced
@@catiebellas Oh, neat. :)
My theory is Primacron and the Quintessons created Primus and Unicron, as Unicron was shown to have also have been made by Quintessons in a Hasbro Pulse stop motion, and we know the Quintessons created the transformers
This is one of the best looking episodes of season 3. I wish the rest of season 3 looked this good.
The dialogue is really good you really get a sense of who each character is. If I had never seen the series and had my eyes closed you'd get a real sense from what they say and how they say it especially Springer and Rodimus
You can tell the Japanese studio did these episodes the artwork is so much more Crisp
Also Predaking is such a Boss no fear true warrior!
Slag brief leadership and plan was brilliant as Dinobots go
Studio Look and Studio OX alums animated this. Very stylized work, probably the best of the series
Are they related to Tokyo Movie Shinsha? Because it took me and my brother by surprise, in a "Bionic Six / Mighty Orbots" opening kind of way. (We were delightfully confused. lol).
Very cool how Grimlock saved the day...
I think about how, if Wheeljack were still around, he would've most likely invented something to beat the monster...
And technically, he did.
😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️😁😁
That's a way of putting it.
“Come now Snarl, Sweep, Swoop, and Slag.” 😂
For some reason, the only episode given to a different animation studio (one that could actually draw) and the most amazing looking one in all of G1 (apart from when Predaking disassembles…) Luckily this was the first episode I bought on VCR, and came with The Girl Who Loved Powerglide…
Man 80s cartoons hit different than any other time period.
If only all of season 3 was animated like this
This was my favourite episode as a kid. Love the different animation
Springer's one liners and jokes are always funny to hear. 5:02😂🤣
Gotta love Sky Lynx he is so damn arrogant. But this is one of the best episodes
The music choreography is awesome.
This episode is my entire childhood, thank you random early 90s bootleg VHS
I love the predacons so much, headstrong turning around saying he'd rather die fighting then razorclaw acknowledging gives me goosebumps. Such a great episode
Agreed
Call Of The Primitives is the best drawn episode of season 3 in my opinion. It looks almost like anime.😎
It's arguably the best drawn episode since the movie! This is probably 90% of the comments 🤣
This episode was visually as close to the animation drawings on the TV Commercials, Transformers Rebirth should have finished off Season 4 looking just like this or looking the same way it did for the episodes on the Return of Optimus Prime; that would have been phenomenal.
This is one of my favorite episodes. Very well done artwork.
Seeing Overkill and Slugfest really confused me as a kid; wasn’t till many years later that I learned who they were.
I had them as a kid. They came together in a 2 pack back in the day
It was their only appearance I believe.
@@charlesdavis7285 yes it was why they never popped up in headmasters or the og comics is beyond my understanding
@@chrisedwards3214 Remember seeing their file in the back of one of the original G1 comics but that's it.
ohh, this is the famous "anime AF-looking" episode, nice!
In the Japanese g1 timeline primus, primacron’s assistant and vector sigma/oracle are the same character.
I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I prefer this origin to the "mad god" origin from the comics. It's way less complicated and convoluted.
Yeah it seems the implications was that The assistant was responsible for the cybertronian race gaining sentience in the first place.
@@lordblu4316 Same here.
Such great animation in this episode. I only wish more episodes of season 3 were done with this animation studio!!!
This episode was so good. A creature far greater than any transformer. Even the planet. And it just about destroys the entire universe. And then grimlock pulls a lever, problem solved... cartoon logic.
This episode is beautifully animated and one of my favorites!
Sky Lynx is my favorite Autobot of all time and he really shines here. ^^
Easily one of the best and a personal favourite episode from S3
15:54 balls, beyond balls, a true warrior with honor and courage
This was always my favourite one, the animation still looks stunning today. Shame the rest were rarely this pretty.
The best animated Transformers episode ever and visually the most beautifully drawn
20:24-33 Me Grimlock think that is smartest thing I ever done! LOL Grimlock's last line and laugh in the G1 show was a great way to leave his legacy.
How ironic that Grimlock was crushed by another T-Rex transformer.
"clever girl...."
prometheus school of running away fails again
In some continuities, Trypticon is a kaiju-bot.
I'm gonna be honest: I like it better when Unicron is a god of chaos and Primus' rivial than him being created by an alien scientist. Also I keep forgetting that Sky Lynx is the douchebag of the Autobots.
One of the best animation in G1 season 3 and Transformers lore!!!
Watched this episode ages ago and loved it… @15:53 straight gangsta!
This episode had so many memorable and fantastic Grimlock quotes!😂👏🏼. Gregg Berger killed it in this one!!
Best line in Transformer, 15:52 Headstrong: "I detest fleeing! I would rather die fighting!" Razorclaw: "He is right! Predacons, unite!" Predaking: "To the end!"
It didn’t matter that they didn’t stand a chance, the Predacons are _warriors,_ and they’re gonna die fighting like warriors.
@@CasualNickname warriors to the end!
One of the silliest voice errors was in this one when the voice calls to the Dinobots, "Come Snarl, Sweep, Swoop, and Slag." Who the hell is Sweep? You mean Sludge.
First appearance of Overkill, & Slugfest.
I think this was the only appearance of Overkill and Slugfest..
@@athlonen It is, because Slugfest, and Overkill never appeard again after this episode. I wish they would have made more appearance's though.
This episode was one of my favorites. It had some awesome animation.
YES! Thank you Hasbro Pulse for putting up season 3 !!!
the animation is very dynamic looking in this episode. Top notch work.
5:41 Hi Slugfest and Overkill! Bye Slugfest and Overkill!
Slugfest appears two more times: in the crowd shot at 5:48 and when everyone is backing away at 14:58, so I can only assume Overkill is with him. But I do wish we'd seen them more. They should've been able to talk like Ramhorn did IMO.
Galvatron cracks me up! "GET BACK HERE DESERTEEEEER!" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I loved the history lessons
At the end of season 3 episodes . In the days of Megatron .
The remix of the soundtrack sounds....."galvanized" 😆
May I add this episode may be the most important episode of Transformers lore. That muppet Primacron is responsible for Unicron? He's not even a robot.
I like the “We ran short on story so let’s have a commercial for new toys at the end…” 😂
They had these at the end of most episodes
This episode could be a precursor to Beast Wars.
