Should I Change My Own Oil?

  • I have always be one to change my own oil and rotate the tires on my trucks. That was until I was asked “Is it really worth my time and money to do it myself?" So, I decided to try a little experiment. In part one of today’s video, I will compare how long it takes me to change the oil, rotate the tires and perform a full vehicle inspection on my truck. Then in part two, I will take it to a local shop and have the same maintenance performed. Make sure you stick around until the end to see if I can really save any time or money by doing it myself!

    I used to always change my own oil but several years ago i bought a low clearance vehicle with oil filter on bottom and took it to jiffy lube for the first time. After they were done i pulled into the first parking lot for inspection and they hadnt put my splash shield back on. Their excuse was they thought it belonged to another vehicle. And last time they forgot to fasten the clamps back on the engine air filter housing and there was a small crack where unfiltered air could get into the engine. I also discovered they didnt tighten the oil filter enough and there was oil leaking down the side of it. Unfortunately i realized these things months after they serviced my vehicle.
    So i went and bought everthing i needed such as ramps, jack stands and tools so i can do my own damn oil change. I am also studying youtube so i can be prepared to do other basic maintenance.

      I agree with you. Unless I know my buddy who I trust is doing it or one of his guys, I wouldn’t do it. Once I get a lift, I’ll start doing it again.

    Just my opinion, I think if you have the ability to change your own oil you should. You'll typically save a few bucks, but it's not about the money really rather its a easy job thats is good at getting people into basic mechanics. Once you change your oil and few times youll probably have the confidence to change your brakes, coolant, gear oil, trans oil, maybe a alternator or belts which is where the actual savings will come. You could pay 300-500$ for front pads and rotors where you could DIY it for around 100$ roughly. Once you can do other stuff and understand mechanics more then sure get it done but it's a valuable skill that will be useful down the road.

    As you found, it is usually a similar cost except for the time. Of course you have pointed out you could shave quite a bit of time off the rotate with just a bit more tooling. I just like knowing what was done and am at a point currently where basic vehicle maintenance is dad time with the teens. That is priceless. As others have pointed out, take care with directional tires.

      You said it! If you do it yourself, you know exactly what was done. I think its awesome that you get to spend time with the kids turning wrenches! Even if it costs more to do it at home, the quality time you get is invaluable. Keep it up!

    i buy toyota filters by the case, getting them super cheap, and i buy mobil 1 full synthetic 12 qt bulk box oil for about $50. So, I'm doing my oil changes for about $30, using a very premium oil, and an oem filter, with new crush washers, and o rings.

    • @ItsTheChad71
      @ItsTheChad71  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Do you buy your products in bulk online or in a certain store? $30 is pretty good for synthetic!

    I have a Honda Accord, and a Honda Ridgeline. I can change the oil and rotate the tires on either one in an hour. I use a floor jack and some jack stands. Jack rear up, put it on a jack stand, then jack the front up, and rotate the tires. Then do the other side. I also torque the lug nuts with a torque wrench. I do use a Ridgid impact wrench though.
    I don't know where you got your tire rotation instructions from but my local tire shops only do front to back. I have been told if you rotate a tire from one side to another changing the rotation on a tire, will cause the belts to break.

    • @ItsTheChad71
      @ItsTheChad71  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cars seats sure slowed me down along with my small floor jack not going high enough. I have always rotated my rear and 4wd tires this way. I even double checked with Bridgestone and thats what they call for. Doing your own oil change and rotate can be a pain but at least you always know exactly what was or wasn’t was done. Keep up the good work!

      @cacapupucabesa3498 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some tires are directional so they have to stay on the same side of vehicle that is marked for rotation like snow tires. Otherwise follow the owners manual recommendation which often says to flip one set to opposite sides when rotating.

    Great video! I do my own oil and service on my vehicles, I'm an independent tech and I do enjoy doing those stuff. But I will say going to your local shop is great. You also have to account the time it took for you to drive and get the supplies, and more importantly the potential of being injured while doing your own oil change, tire rotation, or repairs.

    I used to change my own oil until I realized it was actually the same cost to have someone else with the proper setup do it. All you gain by doing it yourself is a sense of self satisfaction and a big, leaky jug of used motor oil that’s now YOUR problem to dispose of.

    I change my own oil using high mileage FULL synthetic oil and a Premium filter and it cost $45. Using an oil change place AND full synthetic is around $90. This video must be sponsored. Also, most shops charge $20 for a rotation. That would be $110. You’re also not including the drive time to the shop. When you change your own oil you can pick up the supplies at any point between changes when you’re at the store.

    • @ItsTheChad71
      @ItsTheChad71  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t have any sponsors from Firestone. I did buy my tires there, so that gets me free rotations, inspections and rotations on the set. I only get a synthetic blend so that kept the cost down. My buddy just retired and when I went in the other day they wanted $62.99. I think it’s time for me for me to do it at home. I can still get free rotations there if I want.

    You should have also counted the time from when you left your driveway and got back home separately since this was related to your experience. Some people may have to drive hours to get to that “reputable” shop. I get free rotations at Costco, occasionally I would use them but I found for the hassle of waiting in line and dealing with rat race there I could do them faster myself. Also, their new guy stripped a wheel stud and blamed it on me. I always hand thread first and I hand torque wrench everything, so nice try.
    Any reputable shop is just a new inexperienced tech away from becoming not reputable.
    If it is a chore and you haven’t invested in decent tools by all means take it somewhere, there’s nothing wrong with employing service professionals, my only gripe is that you don’t always get a professional.
    Also, if I had to change my oil once every few months I would be a lot faster or super tired of doing it. I go 5000 mi/change and do oil changes between our 3 cars 2-4 times a year depending on the year. I basically rotate tires when I switch to snow tires anymore with the pandemic.
    Was still interesting to watch your video, I knew the Supertech to Fram would draw some educational comments. Thanks for putting the video together.

    • @ItsTheChad71
      @ItsTheChad71  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts! You made a lot of great points! You are correct with the shops. If it's a bigger place, you might not know who or what experience that tech has. Also the blame game is horrible if a shop does something wrong and tries to blame you for it. Yeah, I should have done my research on the Fram filters! I never use them but thought, let's go with the more expensive for the vid. FAIL! Haha. I am glad folks commented for future oil changes. Thanks for watching!

    I don't know how could you do oil change that cheap but my local jeffy lube charges $125 for an iil change with oil filter if synthetic (5qts). Most lube charge places use big drum oil which has high chance to get contaminated. Lastly and the most importantly since i started changing my own oil all my vehicles started running like brand new. My recommendation for all , if you have time to change your own oil please don't waste your money for any quick lube please no matter how cheap they are offering. You just don't know how much they draining and what kind of cheap oil they putting in your vehicle

    • @ItsTheChad71

      I totally agree with you on not using quick lubes! I have heard a lot of bad stories from them. Filling the oil twice, stripping the drain plug, tranny fluid in the engine. What a mess.
