  • Hawthorn had a period of great success in the 1980s and early 90s, largely attributed to characters such as Dermott Brereton. The forward was a ruthless force on the field.

    No fan of Hawthorn, but man, what a team they had during this time. Met Brereton in Melbourne one day, nicest bloke too (and enormous guy - shivers he could go through two packs of Essendon players I reckon lol).

      Yeh same here, met him in st kilda one Saturday night and he couldn’t have been a nicer bloke. Sat down with our group and chatted like we were all mates. Was great to hear the 89 story straight from him as well.

    Alan "Yabby" Jeans said of Brereton (I paraphrase): "he dished it out plenty, but he copped it pretty hard too ..."

    I love Rugby League being from England but love old school AFL and we used to get this on Channel 4 but Dermott was a pretty boy should of been playing in a LA Rock Band as well...top athlete.

    Thanks Yeates, that gutless hit gave us a goal and momentum to go on and win the flag.
    And to this day Malcolm Blight regrets ordering it.

      Dermott got the Flag and Yeates got nothing .

      Dermie ruptured Yeates balls earlier in the year, it was payback fully deserved.

    Dermott is my Favourite Hawthorn player of all time . Not the best ( Mathews is) but he wore #23 because of Don Scott and we had a big drought at #23 for awhile then Buddy ? Well as good as Buddy is he tarnished #23 by the way he left Hawthorn , not leaving but the way he did it. But Dermott, Dunstall the best forward tandem in VFL/AFL history. To see the rules and nice nice of today makes me love this era all the more. Dunstall the best Full Forward of all time not highest goals but the best. He said he would trade all his goals for Premierships and that tells you about the man. Dermott was the Rock Star of the VFL/AFL !

      @@bigfrizie8770 And for me and others it defined his passion and many had a quiet respect for him . At this time of his career he was on fire his mentor (Jeans ) was ill and they now had Joyce coaching and Dermott always wanted to show his mettle .

      Tony Lockett was the best full forward period

    • @michaelmarshall1713
      @michaelmarshall1713 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@realcrunchy6572 How many premierships has plugger got ? This is not just my opinion but many have said it . Duntsall had a discipline like no other Full Forward and his record would have been #1 had he not dished off at times because he said no one will remember the goals but they will always remember the flags .

    I got my latest Hawk Talk ( members magazine) and inside is shot of Dermott when he was toe to toe with the umpire against Essendon. The man had courage and balls !

    If he wasn't such a thug bully he might be seen as the best centre half forward of all time , his finals performance's where probably better than Royce harts and Wayne Carey and has 8 goals in a losing grand final team , 1 behind Abletts 9 the record.

    • @jejona6989

      Richmond supporter but a great fan. An under rated footballer. Really one of the best CHF of all time. Tremendous performance in finals and grand finals. Carey was a moderate performer in grand finals, Royce a great performer, except for 1972, Kernahan... Brereton has them all covered. He was injured in 1987 GF but turned up and played for the team, took some marks & would have kicked 2 or 3 goals but couldn't kick straight, that's what happens when you are injured, it can affect your kicking
