    Hi Rev, good to see a new video. Darn Tough socks are the best; that's all I wear. Haven't been out on the trails much lately due to the really got and humid weather and the smoke from Canada. We were all sick from it in June but our son ended up with pneumonia with complications from it. He was in the hospital for a week till they could drain his lungs. He's fine now and back at work after being off for about 3 weeks. Hoping for cooler, less buggy weather so I can hit the trails again. Take care and God bless!

    Hi Rev! Thanks for sharing this. I've been walking the West Highland Way in Scotland last may with your tips and advice in mind. It all worked out pretty well. I've been using a Lanshan 2 tent which is a kind of copy of the Zpacks but much more affordable. Not as light as the Zpacks but It served me well. My Enlightend Equipment quilt was great together with the Thermarest XLite NXT. I managed to stay under 13 kg's packweight.
    All the best. Henk (Holland).

    Rev, thanks for this video. I watched your Pinhoti series, and that is on my list (maybe 2024 or 2025). I completed the PCT about two weeks ago, and made many adjustments over the two years that took. I think I have the same knife (one blade, one file/small regular screwdriver, one scissors, one tooth pick). I used that and got rid of the nail clippers. The scissors and file took care of that (saved maybe 0.7 or so ounces, but with my old knees, it all adds up quickly). I mainly used the knife for cutting cheese (literally, not figuratively; and protection from the grizzly bears I ran into almost daily - for those who have not been on the PCT, that is a poor attempt at humor. Although I did see 6 or 7 black bears on the PCT and about the same number of rattlesnakes). I noticed you didn't wear sunglasses too much. I bought some DeWalt sunglasses on amazon that have built in readers. These really helped when I check Guthooks (sorry, FarOut for the younger crowd), etc. during the hike as I did not have to pull out my regular readers which I carried for lower light situations. I will have to check out the Nalgene bottle vs. the Jif jar I used. Thanks again and you can be sure I will rewatch your videos for insights! And finally, I look forward to your next hike - consider the River to River (R2R) in Southern Illinois or the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. Both are more user friendly for old knees like ours.

      @TheHikingRev  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the recommendations. “So many Trails, so little time.” I told someone the other day, “I feel like I’m on the back nine and I’m not sure how many holes I’ve got left.” 😁

  • @dustyoldhat
    @dustyoldhat 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You know what, that Nalgene Canteen piss bottle is actually a genius thing. For so long now when I wake up at night to pee, I grumble and stumble to get out of the tent and take a piss - I've been so groggy that I don't even want to get out of the tent and will just try to piss in the vestibule, which is pretty gross. But having a packable bottle and you can sit up on your knees and piss into the bottle and dump it out in the morning, is a good idea. I'm assuming that's what you're using it for?
    I might have to adopt this. As long as it's not too heavy, it seems like a luxury item that would save me a lot of annoyance in the night. Funny thing happens when you get into your 40s....

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes…I don’t know why it took me so long to learn this. I guess I’m a slow learner. 😂 Sure beats going outside in the cold, rain, tripping over things in the dark, etc. I just roll over on my side and answer nature’s call. 😁

    The Nalgene canteen is a good choice. Decided to leave mine at home this last trip, and got stuck in the tent during a rainstorm for a few hours and really wished I would of had it with me, to stay dry when nature called. It will be coming with me from now on!.

    Hey Rev, Thanks again for your great videos. I did want to mention that I am reading more and more that it is recommended to fold/roll DCF shelters instead of stuffing them as repeated stuffing over time is causing more degradation of the DCF's outer mylar layers that sandwich the super-strong cross-woven threads.

    Rev, on an Eastern hike with rain often how did you cope sleeping at night. I realized this was a warm weather hike so you could go buff in the quilt if your hike clothes were soaked. I have always taken light weight long bottoms and long sleeve tee. Keeps my dirty body off the sleeping bag. You can, if its true, reassure me I don't need a dry set of nightime

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey genelucky4002. You don’t need a dry set of night clothes to sleep in (unless you just want to carry them). I wear a rain jacket and pants to keep my hiking clothes dry if it rains. If they get wet, they dry quickly. Your sleeping bag/quilt is going to get dirty. Just get it professionally cleaned when you get home. In fact, EVERYTHING is going to get dirty on a Thruhike. Just wear your hiking clothes to sleep in at night. You don’t have to change clothes when you go to bed or wake up and you don’t have to carry an extra set of clothes (again, unless you just want to).

It also is a pee bag in disguise. People see you coming out of the woods and think I just ran down to the local KFC to get some tea. 🤔 I should write on it, DO NOT DRINK! ☠️

    Dear Rev. Something that concerns me as a Swiss (we are neurotically tidy people, but never mind): How do you survive with only one shirt and shorts, apparently not even underwear? Are you camping lonely 100%, or are you also spending time with other people, maybe in a mountain hut in the evenings thereby exposing them to your olfactory emissions?

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Daniel…hopefully I can relieve some of your neurotic concerns. 😁
      1. I laundry my hiking shorts and shirt, along with socks, buff and pillow case when I go into a trail town to resupply. Usually every 3 to 5 days. I do not need multiple suits of clothes. (I hope that’s not too untidy for you). 😁
      2. My hiking shorts have a built in liner (similar to swimming trunks) which eliminates the need for underwear.
      3. When I Thruhiked the 2,653.1 mile (4,269.75 km) Pacific Crest Trail in 2020, the 350 mile (563.27 km) John Muir Trail in 2022 and the 353.1 mile (568.26 km) Pinhoti Trail in 2023, I hiked/camped with other people about 15% of the time.
      4. When I camped/hiked by myself I was NEVER alone.
      5. I have NEVER stayed in a Mountain Hut.
      6. Since I sleep in a one man tent, I get to enjoy my olfactory emissions ALL BY MYSELF. 🤢

      @@TheHikingRev Ok, I assume that you are kind to others and spend those 3 to 5 days mostly lonely. When I hike and sweat, a normal shirt becomes smelly after only one day. However, there exist T-shirts made from Merino wool from New Zealand (brand Icebreaker, but there are also others). They are very comfortable to wear, not scratchy as one might expect from wool. Wool inhibits the growth of bacteria, and I may wear these shirts two, maybe three days before they also become smelly. They cost about twice as much than shirts made from artificial fibres, but for me it is worth it. It is important that they are made from pure Merino wool, as soon as artificial fibres are blended in they tend to become smelly more rapidly.

      Hey Douglas. No, I just ate food that did not need any preparation. Although I did pig out on southern food when I got into a trail town.😁

    Interesting...list shows that you have no toilet paper, and no bidet. That makes me wonder...how? As a retired mailman, I have plenty of postal dog spray that I take hiking

      No need for toilet paper when God provides leaves, grass, sticks, rocks, etc. I also use a bidet. I guess dog spray would’ve been good, but I wanted the owners to wonder what was going on with their dog.😁

      Why carry toilet paper when you have leaves, rocks and sticks for free? 😂 Just be careful what kind of leaves you use. 😁
