I can understand the customer who mistook the phone for the medicine. What I can't understand, is the store employee lying and saying she personally saw you putting the medicine in your pants. That is completely unacceptable.
The only crime in this event was a substantiated false statement to the police by the accuser. It's unfortunate when police and state's attorneys allow that.
@@George-pf8zb Many counties make a living doing just that and have for decades. Now you know why you cant go 2 blocks without driving by a cops house. The biggest problem is, only 1 percent even know what the constitution says, so your 4th amendment is abused daily
I've got 26+ years in law enforcement and soon set to retire in less than a year. I've come across this many times. That employee needs to do better than what she done. Coporate should be notified because you don't tell the police one thing and then when watching the video, you change your story. Also, the officer didn't know for sure that she had taken the medicine but was saying/accusing her of putting the medicine in her pocket! If the accused would have changed her story she would have gotten into trouble if not charged for lying, so why didn't the employee? I'm very happy it worked out for "Homemade Wanderlust"!
That woman said twice in this video that she saw you on camera put a box of medicine in your coat. She's incredibily clear and confident. Then the cop is forced to catch you off guard, search you, and have you explain your business. Then that lady completely changes her story when she reviews the video with the cop. You're not shown on camera putting anything in your coat. She also stammers when the cop wants to see the customer likely because she wanted to protect her or she doesn't exist. But right then and there the cop should have called her out for lying, wasting his time, and violating your private life.
@@kimballisms I was going to mention that. Though a lot of stores will ask you to leave for carrying things in your pocket, the police can't really do anything unless you pass the point of payment. Simply putting something in your pocket lacks the Mens Rea required to establish the criminal intent.... however there is discretion here. If the person "looks" guilty or has purposely put an expensive item in their pocket when a basket or cart was freely available then there could be a case against that person.
People make terrible witnesses and the store clerk could easily have questioned Dixie about the allegation the witness made and see for herself before bringing the cops in. False witness statements get innocent people killed.

The cashier straight up lied. On camera she said (twice) she saw Dixie put medicine in her pocket. Then when looking at the security cam footage she kept saying the customer told her. I am sorry Dixie and folks had to go through that. In college I was accused of stealing pencil lead from the university store. It still sits with me now over 30 years later.
It still sits with me that when I was 14 i was outside a grocery store in back just looking around and the store manager called the cops on a friend and I when we hadn't even been in the store. We were not arrested but we were taken to police station and questioned and lectured.
This is true, which is why many hikers that got off the trail when covid first started, got ridiculed to no end. And they deserved it. Abandoning a hike at that time was probably the dumbest decision making I've ever seen.
@@jetmech9287 If you're thru-hiking don't you end up relying on in-person places like stores and post offices? I've not ever gone thru-hiking yet so I wouldn't know, but it seems like that's the case. What a mean lady! She outright lied! But you all handled it really well. That's why its a good idea to pick up one of those little baskets they have near the door to put your purchases in and don't mess with your pockets while you are in a store. Im so sorry that happened to you! It's so upsetting. Don't get frightened into giving the cops any more info than they ask for. They aren't your friends. Be careful. Happy trails!
“I’m back on trail and not in jail. Although…I have a feeling that jail would have been warmer tonight.” This quote just captures so well what a class act you are, Dixie. Love your attitude. Love your fabulous humor. Rock on.
Wow. As someone who used to work at a major department store, we would often be coached through potential shoplifting situations by lost prevention. We would NEVER have called the cops on someone just by hearsay from another customer. We would have to see it with our own eyes and be 100% sure that was in that person's pocket. You handled that situation very well. Nice way for you to end 2020 👍
I worked retail for a decade and only would confront someone if it was a felony amount and they were on their way out of the store. Hearsay from a noisy Karen? Over $5? Hell no. Not worth the hassle.
I also worked on retail and we're trained to call our manager and they would call the manager of the store & keep an eye on that person and follow him/her until they were on their way out. Then they would confront that person and take him/her to the office where they would escalate the questioning and view the video and, if necessary. call the police. But never for a $5 item ... not worth the hassle or the potential lawsuit.
@N Webb He had no choice but to try to detain them first or they would have left the store before he had a chance to look at any footage. Also had he shown even more leniency he would have had to explain why , especially now that racial inequality in the US seems to be a topic that attracts negative attention towards law enforcement. @Alsatiagent He was just doing his job and following standard procedure from the looks of it. People in these jobs have probably seen things: seemingly innocent people turning on them and so on . the reality is that it's impossible to know for sure. I work as security without even the kind of traffic that cops have to deal with and I've myself have been in stranger interactions, can never know what person would turn out to be uncooperative or hostile .
That entire interaction at Dollar General was so wrong. Why did the officer keep asking if your boyfriend was going to give him any trouble? Also until you leave the store, they cannot approach you!! At anytime you are in the store, there is still the chance you're going to pay for every product you have. That is the law. How could they accuse you of shoplifting when you haven't even gotten to the checkout!!? I am usually an easy going person, but this really hit me the wrong way. That store owes you an apology!
Really going to depend on the laws. Where I am if someone conceals something and prepares to steal it that's technically enough for a theft charge, although security usually waits until you leave to have a clearer case.
@@ravenstarver1360 it is store policy to stop outside to help your case better. All you need is appropriate from shelf to pocket or other act for peace officer to detain and investigate. Your correct.
This nearly happened to me and my husband once. We were appalled. We had a reusable grocery bag and we were filling it with items and literally walking to the check out lane and we got stopped by the manager who accused us of stuffing the bag with items and we responded "uh, yes, we are putting items in it" and she was so perplexed. She was going to argue further til we were like "we're literally standing right by the check out, how does this look like stealing?" We didn't have enough items to warrant using a cart, but there were too many to just carry by hand. We were still inside the store. smh
You are referencing a state law. Some states count concealment as intent to steal. I can not speak for this state, but your assumptions here are not always true. In Indiana this is NOT the case. You WILL be arrested if you put the product in an enclosed space not assuming that space was not provided by the store. Please be careful giving out legal advice. It can do more harm than good if you don't add the disclaimers and a person challenges a cop. As we see here, cops don't really give a crap no matter how in the wrong they are. (PS, was a store manager of Best Buy for a number of years, and then a Firefighter EMT for 6 years. I am not an expert, but I have absolutely gotten people arrested in store, in Indiana)
P.S. I know your heart is in the right place. No hard no foul, and keep trying to help! Sorry if I sounded discouraging. Just wanted to correct and throw out some caution. Theresa, you seem so nice. Please do not take my response personally! :)
Wow. Really effective addition of the officer's BodyCAM footage. Showing the incident from a different point of view completely changes the tone of the story in this backpacking video. Very impressive storytelling.
I might add that it would be only fair to the hiking community to let them know to avoid this place in light of how you were treated. The clerk clearly stated to the officer that when she viewed the video, she (personally) saw you put the medicine bottle in your pocket. Later, when watching it with him, she admits that you had to have put it in your pocket (also not true) when you walked “off camera.” In other words, no way she saw anything the first time. My assessment is-out of towners beware. Love your videos, Dixie. We’ve been watching since the AT.
Tyler H was the clerk really in the wrong though??? It may have been store policy to notify the authorities whenever someone reports a customer stealing and that she had no ability to sort the issue out herself. A lot of stores have these kind of policies. I don’t think bashing a Dollar General cashier making minimum wage in a small town on Guthook is appropriate. I save my anger and bashing for actual bad people, namely anyone who voted for Joe Biden.
@@littleceasar9351 the video clearly shows that the thing dixie puts in her pocket is not the box of Benadryl. You are right though, she is not getting paid enough to analyze very deeply. The police officer did an admirable job of sorting the whole thing out.

Your Chanel is very inspiring! And that inspiration is even rubbing off on my sister! Since my one day off a week is Sunday she’s pretty much always available and I go over to her place to do work outside in their back yard but since I’ve been gathering gear for my hike of the pictured rocks national lake shore(i live in the lower peninsula) it has really encouraged her to get her outdoor goals checked off! We’ve cleared hundreds of pounds of sticks, transplanted over a dozen hastas and renovated a whole section of their back yard! Now my sister is getting excited to go on our local trails with me and I just today I got to intro my nephew to tents and setting them up/packing them. Me getting excited about backpacking this year has inadvertently gotten my whole family into being more active in general and I love it! I really really cherish the opportunity to teach my nephew about the outdoors alongside his parents. He doesn’t realize it yet but he obviously wants to hang with me, changing his seating to be near me or inviting me to do his favorite things a with him. I never had the healthy family dynamic he has had and I feel so god damn lucky to be a part of my sister overcoming our generational BS.
Yeah, I'd bet most cops cannot define Probable Cause, or list the criteria that the 4th amendment gives for search and seizure. But, that's what you get with 6-month training.
@N Webb You make good points, but I would fully support tuition reimbursement for officers that do want to get a BS in Criminology, sociology, or related fields. I do not think that cops should be constitutional lawyers, but the current standard is far too low. Second, continuing education is part of most professions, this should also be required for law enforcement, though I don't think many of those programs exist, and we need to account for paying for officers to get trained by the ones that we do have.

Standard procedure is to not accuse anybody of anything until they have left the store, or at the very minimum until they have left the register and had the chance to pay. I have accidentally found unpaid merchandise in my pockets or under my cart, then returned to pay for them. Nice for the local PD to give you their body camera footage. Although you three had thousands of dollars of ultralight gear on, rich people do steal too. Thanks for posting this, very interesting.
I agree that what you say SHOULD be the case, but I have personally worked in two different places where people were prosecuted for concealing objects while inside the store, without ever passing the registers. Just pointing it out that the standard procedure you describe is not standard everywhere - regardless of whether or not it should be!
@@laurabolt5412 Yes, if the prosecutor can prove intent to shoplift, like purposeful concealment, then one can be convicted, but it isn't an open and shut case as it would be if someone has by-passed the registers and has left the store.

@@JimYeats pardon the pun but people due need to weigh the cost vs durability. I know that I’m pretty tough on gear. But there are those that want to save on weight and are willing to risk it. Dixie did make a great point that the extra protection needs to be lined up. I will admit that I don’t understand the ‘we highly recommend a footprint’ vs just making a durable floor. 🤷🏻♂️
I completely agree. The price of DCF is hard to swallow but has value, I think for pack liners and food bags it is awesome high waterproofing and few seams to deal with especially when made with tape making a nice watertight seal. Pack bags are ok when made with more durable DCF but I think more sewing cancels that out and other materials are cheaper and close on weight. Tents tend to get stupid expensive and fragile in areas such as the floor. I think a floor less model with a ground sheet would be nice but even that is $400 and up. I’ll stick to silnylon for now cheap, lightweight, durable, good waterproofing. Lighter packs is a system not materials, 10lbs vs 12lbs base weight is ok when I can save 1000 dollars.
What I found unacceptable (and I'd heard this before seeing her video proving it) was that the mesh is so fine (why??) that it defeats the purpose of having a double-wall tent.
Dixie, I like how you handled yourself in what I’m sure was a stressful situation. It’s great that cops are wearing cameras; I think it helps keep interactions professional and civil.
Very sad and unfortunate that you had to deal with police over something you did not do. I applaud your response to all the questioning. I've no doubt a lot of people would have not been nearly as calm about dealing with it. On a more positive note here, I have been following your videos for quite some time. I can't recall just how I discovered your channel, but I am very glad I did. You are a great source of inspiration to me. When I was a kid I lived a short half hour trip from Skyline Drive in Virginia, and spent countless days in that park and some other areas with my family doing hikes and camping. Sadly I was unable to keep up that sort of thing as I got older and moved out of state. Life simply got in the way. Finding your channel and some others has really gotten me to want to pick up hiking and camping once more. I finally pulled the "trigger" last week when I found an awesome backpack at an incredible price online and bought it immediately. I'm now busy planning for an eventual section hike of the AT through Shenandoah National Park and south of it. Thank you for having this channel! Without it I don't know if I ever would have taken that final step to start purchasing gear. For anyone out there who's thinking/dreaming of getting into hiking/backpacking, don't give up on it. I know thru-hiking takes a huge time/money commitment. For me, that sort of thing just isn't feasible. Instead, look at it from a different angle. Instead of seeing what isn't possible, try and look at what is feasible. I don't own a car so this was a little more challenging perhaps than for someone who does own one, but I found a way to make a long section hike possible using other transportation options like Amtrak. Unfortunately due to Covid, Amtrak and bus lines like Greyhound have been severely impacted and have been forced to cut a lot of service. Hopefully it's restored later this year.
As someone who actually worked loss prevention you would never go off a customer that said someone took anything unless you saw it either 1st hand or thru video.
Agreed. The clerk in the video is probably actually the manager or at least the MOD (manager on duty). As a former DG employee (long, long ago), I'm fairly certain that cashiers do not have access to the video playback.

Not sure who the Karen is in the story, but there are tradeoffs in every aspect of life. Fewer Karens means you need more police and you'll still have more rule-breaking. Try jaywalking in Germany. The grandmas will yell at you on the street accusing you of looking to get children killed.
Urgh, I’m so sorry this happened to me. I was just pulled over by a cop who insisted that I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt when I was and tried to fine me. I'm impressed you remembered your knife! Reminded me of one time at the airport I had a knife in my backpack which of course the security camera picked up on. I was pulled out of the line, back pack was opened up, and the cop asked "is there anything in here that can hurt me if I put my hand in" and I confidently said no. Then he reaches in and pulls out a knife that i had completely forgotten about. He had to confiscate it and I felt like such a jerk. Still do!

As always, wonderful nature shots and narrative (with some gorgeous Grieg playing in the background!) As for the shoplifting accusation, the cop was just doing his job (as you admit). That is big enough to cover the main area that i be will laying/sitting down on (or maybe just a certain area where the ground is "less than ideal"). @nesekaba It was absolutely unnecessary. That is how people get killed, when police officers put their hands on them for no reason. I thought it was great when Dixie took her wind pants off and the officer said, "thats not necessary" and Dixie said " I just want you to be sure" or some such.
How was she guilty until proven innocent, imbecile? The officer did exactly what he should've done. Responded to a call, investigated the accusation, and resolved it.
Don't kid yourself. we have always lived in the guilty until proven innocent world. The American Prisons are full of people right now that have never even been to court, yet they have been held in prison for years and years. And it is not uncommon either. And it isn't just violent criminals in jail without benefit of being in court either. Most of the time, it is a petty crime, the arraignment hearing comes along, the Judge, sets a bail amount, and if you cannot make bail. You sit in prison until your court date turns up. So, you might find yourself picked up for shoplifting, and without benefits of trial, could spend the next four years in jail awaiting a visit with the court judge, to determine if you are guilty or innocent, and yet you just spent four years getting a first class education on how to be a criminal.
Is there a better system than what we saw to sort things out? How else could it be handled? Is there a better way when one person swears a crime has been committed yet are mistaken? Communication is the only way out the other end.
Hi Dixie! About the allergic reaction while on trail: it could be from your down products, which generally offer great habitat for house dust mites. Allergic reactions to these are common. Its the source of my asthma. Found that out while having trouble breathing at night while on trail in a brand new fancy down sleeping bag. Of course then confirmed with allergy tests. Switching back to synthetic helped a lot, but yes, the volume and extra weight is the downside...
All the gear they had on them could probably pay for half of that stores inventory... the fact its a dollar general and that it was for 1 box of medicine is ridiculous.
Happens every day. Sometimes, police officers don't even look at the security cam video or verify any alleged facts before writing up a report against the accused.
My wife once had the cops called called in her because they thought she stole a chapstick. The cops took the chapstick from her purse and then it noticed it was over half gone. She was super pissed when they accused her if stealing a chapstick she bought like two weeks ago.
You guys handled that very well . The police have to do their job when someone is accused . They have a terrible job to do and the employees made the mistake that put them in an awkward position. Kudos to you and the crew.
Glad that interaction turned out well. As an exercise for us all, repeat after me "I do not consent to any searches. Am I being detained, or am I free to go." Every time. Let them get a warrant from a judge to search you for what's allegedly a couple bucks in medicine. If they have enough evidence to support a warrant, fine. Otherwise I'd like to be on my way, thanks. @@28105wsking Nope. I respectfully disagree. Not consenting to searches is not antagonistic. It simply says "I'm not interested in playing games. If you have evidence, let's move forward. If not, I've got things to do." But it says it more concisely. :)
@@Erskinegc A friend was pulled over for speeding one time. The cop said "you don't mind if I take a look in your vehicle, do you", and since she didn't think she had anything to hide, she agreed. The cop found an empty beer can under her seat, which had fallen out from when she took her aluminum cans to be recycled. He charged her with having an open container in the vehicle, even though she was clearly not impaired and explained how it got there. She had to pay a fine, which I think was about $150. If she had not consented to the search, he would not have had cause to search the vehicle, and she wouldn't have gotten this fine. I could cite many examples of people who were charged with crimes only after consenting to a search that there was no probable cause to conduct. There's no reason to subject yourself to that additional risk.
I’m so sorry that this has happened to you. I don’t know you but I’ve followed you for many years on TH-cam and I feel like I know you and you are not a shoplifting person. God bless you and happy hiking.
You always get the best footage of the bug life :) Regarding the outcome of the incident, technically you couldn't be accused of stealing unless you left the building without paying. You are allowed to carry items anywhere as long as you pay for them before you leave. Law enforcement may ask you the questions to ensure you are paying before leaving. More likely that store has had more than their share of shoplifters.
An element of irony involved in the medicine incident: how many shoplifters are carrying a couple Gs worth of gear and wearing a $440.00 down jacket. At least the cop wasn't a jerk.
I feel like that is the exact way I would react. I'm sorry that happened to you and, while I'm sure that woman was just trying to help out the store, the employee was not on your side and didn't care that she was throwing you under the bus for something she clearly didn't know anything about, even though she has seen you before and the woman had not. I'd start taking my layers off too! That being said, it's hard being an officer and he was just trying to get all the facts. Glad he could see you were not at fault and he made it clear what he needed from you.

@@kimballisms if she was in California, nothing would have happened to her. We encourage shoplifting here.

I will admit that I don’t understand the ‘we highly recommend a footprint’ vs just making a durable floor. 🤷🏻♂️
Especially at that price point!
Ligtweight is the way to go. Your knees will thank you as the century progresses.

@@28105wsking The cashier lied twice about seeing Dixie put the meds in her pocket. Then when reviewing the footage she said the customer told her. That is not an honest mistake.
We know you'd never do something stupid like that. I was shocked..but now I'm happy you got cleared.
Or, at least reprimanded with their hours getting cut way back so they quit. And, not just CVS.
@@lillypatience then made the assumption it went in her pocket off camera around the corner, this sh*t got me seeing red!!
The only thing Dixie could steal is someone’s heart! ❤️
She has done that already.
Ha ha... I suspect she is a repeat offender on that one!!
Yep
I"m a victim too!!
We’re all kinda sitting ducks, at home - any new trail content is exciting to us. You don’t need to do drastic things like going to jail to keep us interested!
😂
I’m so sorry that happened to you. Love and hugs, and prayers for safety from Missouri. ❤️❤️❤️
Dixie bein’ all Gangsta!!! I knew you were a bad seed a long time ago, why I started watchin
Wow, Dixie....crazy adventures on this trail! But I like the music from Edvard Grieg at the 18:44 point. 👍. One of my favorites. 💕
127 comments and only 1 about the tooth... I want to know more about the tooth! LOL! Glad everything worked out in the end!
I showed your "been caught stealing" moment to my kids. We always tell them, "Don't even do anything to make anyone "think" you're stealing". Thanks for sharing.
Reading the reviews that people are posting on Google maps after seeing the way Dixie was treated at the store is gold. The blatant lies told by the store manager to the officer before he came into the store. Makes me mad enough to take a road trip and just fill up random carts with small item merchandise and then abandon them around the store. You should have told the officer and the manager "Bless your hearts."
What a stressful situation that was! I felt myself getting stressed out for you, watching that footage. Glad it all worked out ok in the end.
Agreed. Seriously stressing.
Sorry you had to go through that experience, Dixie. Also, how cool that the policeman was a fan.
We all love ya Dixie and your channel too! Keep up the great storytelling!
"As she walked off camera she put it in her pocket"
That's awfully convenient.
Too bad so many people do steal, making everyone suspect.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!! GREAT videography, beautiful music, good times! So sorry about the encounter at Dollar General! I'm so glad it turned out well. Thank you for another great video, Dixie! The footage where the coyotes were singing was wonderful. The scenery was gorgeous! All the macro shots were beautiful! Well done, Friend! More, please! :)
I can blame Dixie for stealing that magnet... she obviously was attracted to it! 😂😂😂
She's had that kind of magnetic attraction on many of us. 😉
Underrated comment. Dad joke FTW!👏 🤣
Wears/carries thousands of dollars worth of gear... gets accused of stealing a tiny bottle of meds 🤦🏻♀️
Even rich people steal. Some people steal for the hell of it. But yes, I agree the employee was entirely in the wrong and Dixie did nothing wrong. Just wanted to point out you can be a thief and be dressed well.
I was thinking the same thing. Given what I invest in my gear, I have zero need to steal from anyone.
It's weird though, we had to have a store meeting about a customer who spends no joke over 100k a year with us. Who was stealing little shit every time he came in. A 2$ box cutter, a 5$ set of sunglasses.... it was just super awkward.
@@HeronMarkedBlade-ef7zz Wow. I really can't comprehend a mind that would do that. I have way too much guilt.
@@sarasands5 it was a strange situation no doubt. What we ended up doing was keeping track of what he walked out with to the best of our ability and sending a bill to his secretary once a month or so. She's always paid it so we just keep on pretending that nothing is going on.
That whole situation just sucks, kinda pissed me off watching it.. sorry it happened and thanks for sharing. 🇺🇸
You all behaved so well, it shows me how I should behave when things get ridiculous like that. That was actually an illegal search based on hearsay with zero evidence. I'm no lawyer and could be wrong, but that's outrageous. No evidence whatsoever, I guess they can detain you if they are investigating a crime, but literally no crime was committed, other than possibly falsely reporting a crime.
Props to all of you for the way you dealt with the situation.👍
Dixie that was a horrible experience. I feel really badly for you. You handled it well! I have heard that the Tiger Wall has condensation issues. I am a Copper Spur owner and really love the tent. Thanks for your reports, I thru hiked the BMT in November and met a few folks that completed the Pinhoti! I am interested in a your full review when you complete.
OMGosh the police video game me such anxiety!!! glad you're ok!
I’d send that video to Dollar General corporate.
Whoa... That's something! Glad everything turned out okay
I’m so glad you got the body cam footage from the officer! It’s cool the officer had seen your channel. You really handled that situation so well! Way to take a crazy situation and turn it around and be able to laugh about it now. You are such a precious soul! ♥️
When I worked security at target, we needed to personally see someone take an item and pass all points of purchase without losing sight of the person during that time (because they could have ditched the item) prior to apprehending the person for shoplifting. That employee should be terminated because that is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Good thing she did that with someone like you who was kind enough to let it go!
That was intense, glad you all are okay. You handled it well.
One of my favorite parts of your videos is trying to find your logo. This one was clever 👍🏻
Yes ! The reflected “thanks for watching” at the end was fun too...love your editor
Animals Dixie has seen on trail:
Rattlesnakes- Yep
Bears- A few
Mountain Lion- Has happen
Moose- Sure
Dogs- True
Karen- Seriously? You get on trail to avoid them!
Ain't that the truth! The sad part is that they are proliferating more now, than ever!
Karen😂
Not sure who the Karen is in the story, but there are tradeoffs in every aspect of life. Fewer Karens means you need more police and you'll still have more rule-breaking.
Try jaywalking in Germany. The grandmas will yell at you on the street accusing you of looking to get children killed.

Urgh, I’m so sorry this happened to me. I was just pulled over by a cop who insisted that I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt when I was and tried to fine me. I understand that absolute helpless frustration when you’re accused, especially with police involvement, of something you did do. I’m a bloody ER nurse, there is no way I would ever drive without a seatbelt - I’m not crazy! Eventually gave me the benefit of the doubt but clearly still thought I’d done something wrong. I went home and cried, I felt so terrible.
Still do!
Gosh, I am so sorry y'all had to go through that! Pretty cool that the officer had watched your channel though. Good work to be able to insert the body cam video.
I hope he reads all the comments calling him a piece of shit
I know how upsetting it is to be accused of something you didn’t do! Thankfully you had friends present to support you.
Always knew Dixie would end up being a fugitive from Justice.
Seriously, can't believe they stopped you INSIDE the store.
Not only inside but as they were walking up to the cash register! Crazy!
Crazy, perhaps, but common in many places (including where I live!). Be warned!
I would be furious. But most thru hikers I have watched have been run out of town as hobos at least once.
I KNOW, back when I worked retail you never approached until after they left. Technically they havent done anything illegal until they left the property. You could very well pocket it and then pay for it.
As always, wonderful nature shots and narrative (with some gorgeous Grieg playing in the background!) As for the shoplifting accusation, the cop was just doing his job (as you admit). He was careful but cool since a cop never knows when he comes on a situation if someone is going to go berserk or something. He handled it well considering he had to ask those questions once he had a complaint. But we knew all along our Dixie was innocent! Put it behind you (once the breathing and blood pressure gets back to normal!) and hike on! Tortoise
Instead of carrying such a big ground-sheet, you could just get a small tarp. I got one for just $5 on ebay, that is 1x1,45m/39.4x 57.1inches, packs to the size of a wallet, and weighs 95g/3,35oz. That is big enough to cover the main area that i be will laying/sitting down on (or maybe just a certain area where the ground is "less than ideal"). It can also be used as a "rain-skirt", quick and easy shelter for rain/sun, and "picnic blanket". Pretty convenient for such a small thing..!
I really don't like how he immediately put his hands on you. That is not sitting with me right.
I had the exact same reaction. The moment he touched her all my alarm bells went off and it made me wonder if thats just a product of our time right now, or if that was actually inappropriate. I'm leaning towards it probably being the first one.
I think some police use it as a test...if you aren’t resistant things are gonna go a certain way, if you ARE resistant things are gonna go a whole OTHER way.
@nesekaba It was absolutely unnecessary. That is how people get killed, when police officers put their hands on them for no reason. I called the Summerville Police Department and have filed a complaint about this interaction because it doesn’t need to happen again. Gotta look out for our girl Dixie!
They want an excuse to exercise their power. Its legal for departments to fire and not hire cops for being too smart. American court precedent. Lmao
@@andyguinn7052 so cops are gonna create issues and escalate situations on their own perogative? So the cops are the problem.

@ Amelia Leatherman Aw, that's an insult to dogs. ;)

"GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT"
It's a real shame that this is the world we live in today.... I'm sorry that happened to you and your companions. The " TRUTH DID PREVAIL" Happy Hiking Dixie
@@kimlightfoot Your tinfoil hat is on too tight, gloid.
Wow, you handled that much better than I would have. kudos to you.
All the gear they had on them could probably pay for half of that stores inventory... the fact its a dollar general and that it was for 1 box of medicine is ridiculous.
I do believe shoplifting is a serious crime but inept enforcement no - a Walmart would never do that.
Two separate individuals insisted that they witnessed a crime that had not occurred.
Happens every day. Sometimes, police officers don't even look at the security cam video or verify any alleged facts before writing up a report against the accused.
Makes me sick that people would do this without being sure. Be sure or stfu.
Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable. But over-relied on.
welcome to pigs in america. there's a reason we've got a quarter of the planet's prison population and enshrine slavery in our constitution.
I don't think the 'customer' ever existed.
Jessica, You handled that with grace and a remarkable amount of composure. Thank you for not going off on the officer. All the best.
Jimmy
Bless their hearts! (did I say it right?)
There's nothing on video showing it, and the busybody that reported you was gone, so nothing would have come of this anyway. Very sorry you had to go through that.
Don't antagonize. Just answer their questions politely and do NOT say anything else.
@@28105wsking Nope. I respectfully disagree. Not consenting to searches is not antagonistic. It simply says "I'm not interested in playing games. If you have evidence, let's move forward. If not, I've got things to do." But it says it more concisely. :)
If you’re not guilty, then you’ve got nothing to worry about.
@@CanonShooter1861 You can't appeal that ? Surely a judge would throw it out of court when told the facts ? Can't see why he wouldn't.
We heard a pack of hounds going off like that while camping in the Sequoias. Probably the most beautiful and eerie thing I’ve ever heard.
An element of irony involved in the medicine incident: how many shoplifters are carrying a couple Gs worth of gear and wearing a $440.00 down jacket. At least the cop wasn't a jerk.
Yeah, if only they knew how much that tent costs, they wouldn't take you for destitute thieves. 😉😆
Yes, he was. An infuriating puke.
Omg I can’t believe that happened!
Some serious trail mileage to just start taking off layers in the dollar store 😆
I just love the night sounds in your video's. PLEASE include more.
