Rush Hour Trains at: Leighton Buzzard, WCML, 20/04/21

- An amazing evening spent at Leighton Buzzard on the West Coast Mainline where we see no end of services from London Northwestern Railway, Avanti West Coast, Southern and freight from Freightliner, GBRF, DB Cargo UK and Royal Mail.
The station was opened by the London and Birmingham Railway in 1838 and was simply known as Leighton, the line had been planned to go through Buckingham but this was opposed by the Duke of Buckingham which forced the line to head east through Linslade. The original line was dual track.
In 1848 the station became a junction when the branch line to Dunstable was opened. This was used by freight and passenger traffic, the freight traffic would typically take animals from Dunstable and bring them to Leighton Buzzard where they would be unloaded and taken up into the high street for the local market. Freight traffic was introduced to the line in 1859 when the London and Northwestern Railway acquired the line to build a new station and incorporate a freight yard known as Wing Yard. The new station was located 160 metres to the south of the old station. This is now the current site of the station. The station used to have 2 signal boxes, the northern signal box controlled access to the branch line and the signal box to the south of the station was used for the actual control of the signals for the line, yes I know that doesn't make any sense what so ever but it seemed to work for them at the time.
In 1927 the LMS (London Midland and Scottish Railway) had created a cross over junction for the slow and fast lines. By this time the line had been made into 4 lines because of the amount of traffic running along the line, this was to play a major role in the first major train crash at Leighton Buzzard in 1931 when a driver on-board Royal-scot hit the cross over at 50-60 mph when he was actually supposed to take it at 15mph, 6 people died that day including the driver and the fireman as the loco turned over as it hit the junction.
In 1957 to 1958 the station buildings were rebuilt and a new concrete awning was constructed over the platforms, at the entrance to the station there was a new booking/waiting hall, central heating, electric lighting and a cycle storage area.
In 1967 Wing Yard was closed to freight traffic following the closure of the Dunstable branch line. The yard is now the car park which you see during the entirety of the film.
In 1989 the station went through a £1.8million make over which also included the platforms being lengthened to accommodate 12 car trains.
The latest change to this station was the removal of the old footbridge that would allow you to cross the station without having to go through the station building. So you could walk from Southcourt Avenue to the park behind the car park.

Many happy memories,of this station.My grandad,used to take me there.He would stand on the bridge,I would be sitting on his shoulders.I was a toddler(I'm 49 now)When a light engine came through,he'd call it a "Maggot".Great days and all the trains in B.R blue!!😁

@@Tornado922 I live to go to Tamworth, but to be honest with you Stafford is also a really good station as well. In fact, any station on the Trent Valley is a good one for freight and for the Pendolinos

I have to smile when I hear these train horns with laryngitis (honk-squeak!) - - 350253, can't see anything except a big blob of grey grease on the corridor frame, when I paused it - - . Just one of those silly thoughts - if an electric loco is forced by circumstance, to stop in a dead section (ie no power to the catenary - how does it get going again? - - - If I heard you correctly - the 390 going North from Manchester - wouldn't be passing through LB! - - and you close with Keith's (Smile Video) favourite - the water train!
In regards to the 390 I could have got that one slightly wrong haha, but for the trains hitting the neutral sections that is a very good point that you raise and in all honesty I would have to assume that should that sort of thing happen they would have to bring up a 'thunderbird' loco to help move the train as I don't think they would be allowed to have another commuter trains hitch up to it to give it a helping hand
If they were to electrify the class of 66 what do you think they would classify it or should I say re-classify it
If you ever struggle with unit numbers for Northern, LNER, Avanti, South Western Railway, Scotrail, CrossCountry, Caledonian Sleeper, GBRf, or Locomotive Services Limited, just look on Realtime Trains
I know I can look on Realtimetrains for the information but half the time I find it more enjoyable to have a guess or try and look for the numbers when the trains are thundering past me

When I see a duo of 221 voyagers I assume they are off to Chester
Some of them were working Anglo - Scottish services. Others would be heading off to Wrexham General and Holyhead
I think the 800s going to be launched on the West Coast Mainline is largely due to the expansion of the IEP Project currently on the East Coast Mainline and the Great Western Mainline. HS2 will have their own rolling stock.
Not now though
It's the popularity of the train that is why the units have been ordered by Avanti West Coast, whilst it would be nice to see another manufacturer make a train for the WCML.

Where do the 319s run, don’t they run from Milton Keynes to where?
You can find them working the Watford to St Albans Abbey branchline services and also evening peak time services from London Euston to Northampton
Was 319218 not northern or was it always with London north western? Also I didn’t know southern operated on the WCML
They run on the mainline between Milton Keynes and Wembley Central
The 319 units were all once Thameslink units before getting new life with London Midland before becoming London Northwestern Railway. The other units all went up to Northern but some have now been converted to work on non electrified sections of line for Great Western Railway and Transport for Wales.
Also have u heard that the voyagers are leaving and its being replaced By Class 800s & 801s (i think it's because of HST 2 from London Euston to Glasgow)

@@CopenhagenRailProductions The 350/2 units are getting temporary liveries applied to them but they will be getting replaced by the new units later in the year. The 350/1/3 + 4 have been and are getting refurbished with new interiors and the full LNWR livery
You asked what the Crow was doing, I think I can answer that. A Covid check. Carrion crow = Corvus corone one of the class of birds known as Covids. 🤔😷👍

They work a rush hour service from London to Northampton. Once they have arrived at Northampton they then run empty from Northampton to Bletchley Central Sidings
