    I've had my 12kW solar panels and batteries for over 3 years now and they are working hard to pay for themselves.
    I have 38 panels split into 2 x 19 panel sections. 1 x 19 panels charge the batteries and the other 19 panels feed straight to the house. When the batteries are full both systems feed to the house and if we're not using all the power it gets dumped into the grid.
    (for obvious reasons) I don't have a 'smart meter' so I get paid nothing for supplying the grid with power but at the time of installation the feed in tariff was only 5p per unit and lately it was closer to 3.4p per unit which is an insult considering the wholesale price of electric.
    I'd rather get paid nothing and have the security of a proper off-grid system in a grid down situation. If I had a 'smart meter' my batteries could be drained in the event of an 'emergency', leaving me with no power to run the house. Not having a 'smart meter' is a small price to pay for retaining sovereignty over power generation.
    Although our Government claims to want everyone to go 'green' there were no grants available at the time of installing this system and over three years later no surprise there are still no grants available so if you want to invest in some power sovereignty you'll have to save up for it like I did. It is a much better investment than a stupid electric car which will be worth nothing when you come to sell it.
    With regard to Sustainable Energy Engineering (link above) they are a great company so I'd definitely recommend them to anyone wanting to install a good quality solar system with panels and batteries.
    In the first year the system supplied approx. 48% of our (relatively high) power usage. The second year provided approx. 55% of our power and in the last year it is just over 60% but half way through 2023 I had a third battery installed which took the storage from 11.6kW to 17.4kW so next year I'm hoping that the solar system will produce around 70%? of our power needs but that will require careful use of heavy drain appliances.
    At the time of installation I was questioned many times by people who knew I was going for solar as to why I installed such a big system but even on a dull day the system will still produce a usable amount of power. Considering the cost of mains electric now I'm more than happy with the investment since it will afford my family more freedom when electric is limited, more monitored and more expensive..

      It is definitely a long term plan - almost like committing to a mortgage but with saving and planning.
      I'm in a position now where I can't really do any more of the projects I have planned so they are on the back burner.
      This year I'm going to be concentrating on more efficient ways of growing food and getting 1-2 bee hives while continuing to divide and plant more fruit trees / vines etc.

    There is a way to set it up so ifvthe power goes out you can use your back up system. Ignore the people who installed your system they will lie to you. Richard D Hall set it up so if the power goes off he had a back up system.

    • @pondguru

      lol, I'm way ahead of most people with solar systems since I have isolation switches on the system so I can isolate from the grid. I can also isolate all outbuildings and run everything from a battery back-up or petrol generator if necessary.
      I don't have a 'smart (control) meter' so there is no way the batteries can be drained in the case of an 'emergency' by the power company.
      Any excess electric is dumped back into the grid and I don't get paid for any of it but I'd rather have the security of a proper off-grid system than get paid for feeding power back into the grid and have something which can be turned off at any time by external bad guys.
      The installers were baffled by my choice for such a big system but I wanted something which would still produce a decent amount of electricity in a grid-down situation (or when I isolate myself from the grid).
      When I first got the system installed it was put in without the isolator switches so I got them back out to fit them - the brief was to set it up as an off-grid system but although it wasn't initially that way it now is.
      I feel sorry for people who have solar power which relies on grid input to run - I've isolated myself from that situation so it's all good.

    I went heavy on the lifepo4 cells in my shop. Takes 2-3 cloudy days to fully solar charge them, but I can get a full days use it of them. And usually I'm only in there on weekends or evenings. If at all.
    It also runs my chicken coupe automation.
    It has paid for itself by now. A small investment for a very long reward.

      That is awesome - and I agree that the investment is definitely worth it. Having power in a grid down situation is worth more than gold.

    I don't have an off grid setup but it's been 10 years with mine. Even if the electricity prices haven't rocketed it would have been a wise choice with FIT payments.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is great to hear - If you've had it for 10 years you're probably getting good feed-in payments compared to what is available now.

      @@adamsan7494 That is very disappointing and i'ts very sad to see heat pumps being pushed (with big grants available for them) since they are purely a method of control - solar panels and batteries allow the owner some sort of sovereignty and freedom from control so they are not subsidized.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@shaneharrison5094 If you have already painted the pond with something and it failed then it's pretty much buggered - best to either fibreglass over the whole structure (best option of try burning off the old paint with a big heat gun. You could try scrubbing the sides of the pond with a wire brush or a drill powered steel scrubber but the next paint may not stick properly since the first coat relies on soaking into the concrete / render.
      If it a pond which has already been painted it's best to fibreglass the pond since nothing else will bond and stick. You could spend an age scrubbing or girding off the existing paint before painting it again but it's much more economical to forget about trying to remove the paint and just fibreglass over it.
      Hope that makes sense.
      If the paint is bubbled up on the pond then there could be a problem with water going through the sides so it will need to be sealed. Fibreglass will do that no worries and it's best to get someone who is familiar with the process if you haven't done fibreglassing before.

    Hey Sir Richard , so I have been ready to try a few things from Grow Greenie and was wondering a couple of things, you keep any aquariums in your home ?
    I am just curious if you have or maybe planning to , I have no doubt you have a lot on your plate !!! Hopefully it will be up for setting something up. It's just the way you are with the Pimp my filter series A+ for sure. My other question ,have you ever kept Red Cherry Shrimp before ? Im just starting and it's really been the most fun in years as I'm seeing the babies showing up just about everyday I only wish I could have known...... Happy New Year Sir Richard ( the Neo Guru ) 🍻🎉🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐

      We have a house which is mostly windows and doors so it is not good for aquariums. Added to that, my wife won't let me have an aquarium in the house since everything I do in the garden starts out small and goes mad - the same thing would happen in the house with tanks if there was anywhere suitable so I don't blame her for the 'no' for an aquarium.
      With regard to shrimps we had all sorts of shrimps when I had the shop and the cherry shrimp were among the easiest to keep and breed. They looked awesome against a black substrate (Unipac black micro gravel) and broad leaves Java fern.
      Just make sure not to have different Caradina shrimps in the same tank since they will interbreed and colours will generally get faded and messed up.
      All the best for 2024.
