I'm sure there will be a SunSun (or similar) HOB filter which is the same for you guys in the US but I can't find one while searching from the UK unfortunately.
This is a ridiculously cheap filter and it offers two decent sized chambers which are easy to modify into a useful filter. Don't waste time only using foam when the chamber will allow for a good amount of media - good quality media will support far more bacteria than any foams.

    WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE?
If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
Avoid using any products which claim to remove, detoxify or bind ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they will have a noticeable starving effect on the bacteria which will manifest as an inability to achieve a full cycle due to a low population of bacteria on a starvation diet.
Let Nature do the work and as long as you have a suitable sized, well set up filter there is no reason why a full cycle won't be achieved.
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that the recommendations are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.

I personally have always been scared of hang on anything. Is there anychance when filled with media and tank filled with water that the seals on the tank can split

Nice work 👍 I ran these on a breeding set up a few years back, they're great for the money. I got rid of the surface skimmer, popped a prefilter on and filled the whole thing with ceramic, and you just told us about it 😂 should've watched to the end

    These are great filters!
I run 2 on a 90l soft coral reef tank using the standard sponges and filter floss for mechanical and flow and the rock in the tank does my biological, works great!👍

Thank you for this review, I got this back filter on my 90lt tank, after watching this video and added the substrate and filters you advised, along with my normal filter and tank has been doing loads better with this additional help and the right substrate, been thinking of changing my main filter to different substrates after watching to give it a healthier balance in the tank since I use just the standard elite stingray 15 and think my back filter maybe better than my main now haha 😂

I just set one of these up. I placed the coarse sponge on the I take like you showed. seems best method tbh, as you can use the centre chamber for the fine wool or whatever. I've caught a lot of muck in both the coarse on the intake and the fine wool. using this with some biohome ultimate, think I fit approx 600 grams or so. running on my gold laser cory tank.

A company should consult you on prototyping a model, but then they would not make a killing on those filters. Maybe you should start your own line of HOB, or aftermarket mod kits for each. Thank you for taking the time to explain and helping us keep our pets safe.

Hi Richard, i am using a Fluval C2 hob filter with biohome ultimate stuffed in the chemical basket. I observed that the water flow is still quite strong. I am wondering can I achieve a full cycle with this setup?

Could you put biohome in the bags?

    • @UncalBertExcretes
      @UncalBertExcretes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You can fill the media bags with whatever you want to use. Richard uses bio gravel for this filter because it maximises the efficiency being that the filter has very little capacity you would want to get the most grams of media possible crammed in the filter compartment. He got 700g of bio gravel in a very small space which is impressive, If you were to use regular bio home you might get just 500g in as there will be alot of wasted space between the pieces of media.

There’s 52 videos in the “pimp my filter” playlist. Considering an average of 1.5 kilos of media per video that is 78 kilos of media for a total worth of around £ 940 retail price. That’s not how much the media cost to him. Considering that the videos are not only educational but also promote the business I’d say it’s an excellent investment.
