- ✨I thoroughly encourage the art of dressing up, play & self exploration. Even doing it just for fun can reveal all sorts of hidden layers of ourselves. Exploring personal identity & the imagination by visiting a real life fairytale Medieval castle, looking through my own dressing up box as-well-as other curious items I have in my art studio. So let's take a look inside my own private dressing up box and I will share how I use it to explore identity, art journal and in my own creative, artistic practice. Costumes and dressing up can be helpful in our own self development and are so useful in a creative environment. I'm sharing the secret world of my imagination in this one and how I get ideas, inspiration and stay inspired in my creativity. It's much broader than paint strokes upon a canvas... It's fun and deep at the same time!

I used to dance for real (ballet) and it was my True Love. the thing that was truely , authentically me, because I loved it so much. Now, often, in my old age, when I hear music I can still feel my dance in my bones, the movement as if it was easy, the emotion in the movement which is the language of a dancer. I'm so glad I had that time in my life, even if no one around me understands. My pointe shoes still hang in my art studio to remind me of those days

I understand💖 I’ve kept all my old ballet shoes, a reminder of who I used to be when I was young. I occasionally have dreams where I can still dance like I did all those years ago.😊
From many moons ago, I danced with joy and sang, at about five years old I overheard a soul hurting remark from a young adult cousin that I couldn’t dance or carry a tune! Why that was so devastating I don’t really know, along the way I have had a few sparkling moments when I broke out of the cage! But at near eighty I need you to remind me that whatever brings joy is mine to claim! Every bit of this video refreshed my dedication to mindfulness and sprinkles of playfulness! Blessed days filled with all the juicy moments!

Such a free spirit you are! I love it!!! At nearly 75, I often feel like it’s great to just let loose & relax & enjoy the freedom of “who cares??!” I can do whatever I want! Being creative & at times, childlike is a wonderful release.

You are so right about smells evoking memories. My grandmother passed when I was six years old. She always had home baked cookies for me. One day - in my 40's - I walked into a gift shop and it smelled EXACTLY like my mammy's kitchen. And I stood there and cried. It was such a powerful moment for me. Thank you for bringing back that memory for me and the memories of my grandmother. ❤

As an Aspie, I shrunk, I wore clothes that weren't reflective of who I truly was, once I became an adult.
When I turned 50, I gave myself permission to dress in whatever way I wish, to play with makeup instead of sticking to going nude or "natural", to wear hats (I adore cloche hats!), wearing shoes that are funky and fun. And yes...dancing and singing aloud when the mood strikes.
As women, we must be someone else for so many in our lives, it's wonderful to reach an age of invisibility and freedom of all expected by others. ✨️
Love cloche hats too! I can relate to what you're saying..I just retired and feel like wearing pajamas forever.I am sick of wearing a uniform and listening to orders from stupid people.I also broke my leg 2 mo s.ago so I have to wear loose pants and shorts until I can go without a brace.

OMG, can't tell you how many times I have mislaid my glasses in my house. 😂I can't tell you the number of times I've asked my husband to help me find them because I can't see them.😂I absolutely love your dress-up box! 🥰 I haven't done that since I was in my late 20's and I'm 64 now. You've definitely inspired me to do that again. Music is something that makes me happy and I often dance to it. In fact I actually don't sit still when a song I like is playing even if I'm riding in the car, sitting in front of the computer, and even sometimes at the grocery store. 😁 I have that book by Anne Morrow Lindbergh and absolutely love it. I have quite a few of the same kind of books: inspirational, poetry, art books, fairy tales, and quite a few books saved from my childhood. It's unfortunate that so many of us lose our ability to play when adult life takes us over. These days I'm trying to inject those moments into my life as often as I can. Also still working on my own decluttering as energy permits (not always easy with ME/CFS). Thanks for another lovely and inspiring video. I always look forward to the Sundays you post them. I truly appreciate this video. I am in the process of changing my wardrobe. I am getting rid of clothes that I don’t love anymore. I will be replacing them with clothes that I will love. I want them to be apart of the next chapter of my life.💕😊🙏🏾
I'm always dancing too ....... belly dance ! Lots of hip scarves , jingly coin belts , long swishy skirts ankle bracelets ,tinkling bangles ,dangly ear rings (you would love belly dancing )and a couple of medieval dresses for when I go back in time ..... 💛🤣

Unexpected indeed Wendy. I was happily enjoying your pink hair, swirling skirt and beautiful thoughts when you and James took me somewhere VERY surprising indeed. I am an Australian descendant of the Lutrell family of Dunster Castle! My ancestor was banished to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) but not transported for a crime. When we visited the UK in 2015 I didn't quite make it to Dunster so I've promised myself that I will return someday.
My collectables are many and some are for sentimental reasons, while others just inspire me. I have little poetry books, many art books, and a truckload of books in general. I too love sea glass, shells, crystals, card decks, journals, hanging treasures, incense and essential oils and, of course, art supplies. As a mixed media dabbler anything and everything cand be considered an art supply by me 😂 Thank you for another wonderful video with a message we should all be reminded of sometimes.

I loved your Video and talking about the lightness we had as children, dressing up ,allowing ourselves to freely imagine all sorts of things characters and story. And yes I also think it has something so therapeutic to dressing up… like acting that is also connected to dressing up and is also therapeutic. Widening the horizon of imagination about ourself and how our live could be so different in so many ways. It is so refreshing to see how you kept that alive for yourself. ( sometimes it is a little bit sad that my kids don’t use there dressing up Box anymore… they play the role of cool teenagers now…😉) Thank you for sharing all that you shared here! Wendy, I, too, have dress-up clothes, and have always looked forward to Halloween because I love to create and wear costumes!🧜♀️🧚♀️🧙♀️🦸♀️🧝♀️I LOVE your forest green fairy skirt!🧚♀️ I also am surrounded with glass bottles, filled with found sea glass and very small sea shells. Larger sea shells and special stones, collected throughout my long life, are everywhere. I have my kokeshi dolls (one from childhood) and a myriad of small collections of tiny animals and crystals and small items brought back from travels. These items are all throughout my tiny home of 500 Sq ft ! I often open a hundred year old glass and filigree powder box that was my mom's grandmothers. My mom used to open it to invoke fond memories of her beloved Nini. I now stop and smell it to think of my mom as it was always in my childhood home. Besides my art supplies, books as well, bring me great comfort, and I have a library way to big for my small home! An amazing collection, as well, of children's books. I'm always quite fascinated to see that most people's homes are devoid of all of these comfort items and pieces from the past. Oh, by the way, I've heard more than a few times, that it's our hearing that goes last as we pass on to cross the rainbow bridge. That's why it's important to continue to speak sweet words of love and comfort to our loved ones as they move on to their next great adventure. Thank you for sharing your treasures with us and the delightful castle tour. The carved staircase! Wow! At 73, (in a few days),🥳 I feel more and more childlike with each passing year, and have always felt the freedom to be silly and playful. I've taken my share of verbal beatings for it throughout my life, but because my mom was cut of the same cloth, and showered me with deep love, acceptance and encouragement for who I am, I have always felt perfectly fine about expressing with abandonment, my playful nature! I am the free spirit with the barefoot feet! I think that's one huge reason I was immediately drawn to you and your delightful TH-cam channel. The minute I saw your fairy lights and heard you say, " try to keep your lights shining bright," I was hooked and knew I would be loving you as a far-away friend❤ Thank you Wendy for creating this wonderful space for us all to share and delight in your artist's life! Oh Wendy, I'm a Skirt Gal too. I love them, whether for daily wear or Dress Up as you've shown us here. I purchased an early 20th Century Edwardian Skirt, much too small to wear but it will use it for Inspiration as well. And the creativity is opening up even more with my decluttering journey too. I'm a costumer/cosplayer with a love of steampunk & medieval and my costumes have definitely helped with my painting. There's so much inspiration in dressing up as someone you're not in your. Each inspires the other 😊

I love dangly and pretty things surrounding me also. Seashell mobiles, dried flowers and grasses, coloured glass lanterns, plants in macrame hangers. They bring me joy just to look at them. Love the pink hair, thought you'd cut it at first. Like your dressing up box. I haven't got one of those.
Your spirit reminds me of me at 7 years old. full of magic. Thank you. Glasses. Yes, I do that too. I dance and have loads of bellydance stuff. that is my dressing up and part of the reason I do it. And big skirts are a passion.

69 years old and I still play! Was an early education teacher and had my own dress up box too. Also a collector - shells, sea glass, handmade things, sparklie things and come home from every walk in the woods with treasurses!

Wonderful video Wendy! Reminds me of Elizabeth Gilbert's advice in Big Magic to dress up for a date with inspiration! I have spent the better part of a year preparing my studio to return to painting while I finish up with other life projects. In fact, I have spent the last few years, filling my home with only what I love and donating the rest. It has become a wonderful sanctuary. With projects finished, today I get to play, to step back into my art and I am so excited with a heart full of joy and gratitude. Again, I thank you for sharing such lovely inspiration. ❤

Lovely message in tonight’s video about things that invoke creativity and memories etc. A colleague and I wrote a course for people with dementia and part of it was using smells to link to memories. It was amazing what folks could remember associated with different smells. 😊

I know what you mean about different scents bringing back memories. I try and find cherry tobacco scents for my home. Because it reminds me of my Dad. He smoked a pipe and always had a mixture of cherry tobacco and paladin tobacco. Those scents bring me joy. Thank you for this video! Always a pleasure watching you create etc...🌷
I am so with You Wendy and have a huge selection of different wigs to play with , have even been known to wear 2 at Once...long bright Green with a Bright Red Beehive on top when I dressed as the Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland....SUCH FUN and then I can go back to my "normal' long crazy Witchie hair xx Our Wee Cottage in the woods is filled with Dress up things ...Bowler Hat is on the list to add to my collection of Hats...I have been dressing up for most of my 63 years and it is My JOY and I think it all started when I was about 5 and was given a piece of light blue Sparkly fabric and would wrap it around my legs and imagine being a Mermaid ...!! I love old copper things. I have couple of copper tea kettles which, I will paint one day soon. I also love glass trays with cut glass perfume bottles or containers ( for rings or creams ?); I'm not sure what belongs in the little containers. Currently, they are all empty. The Princess and the Pea was the first ballet we saw on a grade school field trip to the Boston Ballet. That's where I fell in love with the ballet. And, when my Dad was a newborn, the authorities suspected he was Charles Lindburgh's lost baby boy. I'm glad they figured out he truly belonged to my Nana and Pop. Can you imagine? At the beginning of July, I attended my nephew's wedding and at the end of the evening EVERYONE was on the dance floor. We danced for a solid two hours! I forgot how happy dancing makes you feel! Thank you, Wendy and James, for bringing us your happiness. Love you. ❤

Such a lovely video today. Upbeat, inspiring us all to remember who we are, that it really is all about love and how we embrace our younger souls, no matter what life throws at us. Through it all we grow and sometimes that means getting back in touch with our younger souls who knew instinctively what we needed. I just loved this episode!!!

I have a crystal tiara made of labradorite. I wear that and have a fancy cup of tea in a fine porcelain cup. It makes me feel more magical, and then I get to work. Lol

Oh sweet Wendy, thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your wonderful playful dress up box! It’s fabulous! Just last week I decided at 55 to really give in to my inner child’s need for play and stopped into a thrift store to find things to wear to a High Tea Party. I bought a lovely dress, some gloves, a fancy hair piece and a beautiful china cup and saucer and I had so much fun dressing up. But the purchase that sparked the most magic for me was a belly saving scarf…oh how I love how she tinkles when I away these old hips! it may be the favorite thing I own at the minute. 🤭 I also grabbed a Marilyn Monroe wig to go with a white Marilyn Munro dress I found long ago, maybe now I will have the courage to go to a Halloween party lol. Now I would LOVE to find a long velvet cape with a hood, a medieval dress and a few masks because yours looked so fun! I think a monster has been created. But a dress up tickle trunk just sounds like a necisssityin fact, too bonkers not to have in this 😅works. 27:33

wonderful dress up yes is so fun and I have a diffuser too and incense love to have ,in my studio I I have a little alter that is beside me which brings me comfort and disney stuff a few characters that I love as as a child I was in wonder and would draw the characters from time to time still do. it is yes so important we remember to play and use our imagination as life can be all to serious at times and to let the inner child play and keep the wonder being in touch with joy and love is so important . I'm a junk journaler and couldn't agree more about play and imagination. Trained in fashion a million years ago so love creating and dressing up. at 55 still love a sequin!!!! Hats is my big love though, love wearing hats of all types. A fellow creative and my best friend in life always find hats to try on whenever we are out (although the sad demise of the department store with a good hat department makes it more difficult these days, so we find all sorts of other things to be photographed in, as long as its perch able on the noggin then it counts ..) and dancing, I love to dance.
And would like to say a big thank to you too, life threw some curve balls my way in the not too distant past. I have a TH-cam channel but haven't done any content in an age but your videos have helped me stay creative and I'm about to launch back into videoing
I had a wonderful morning at Berkeley Castle on Thursday doing a mixed media workshop with a local artist. We spent some time in the beautiful gardens to in inspire us
Here in Canada, we call dress up box a "Tickle trunk". The term started with a Canadian children's show host called Mr. Dressup who frequently used his Tickle trunk which was an old round-top steamer trunk. You have brought back a lot of memories to this 70-year-old.
I like your idea of dress up as therapy. We often dress withinin a few styles, and trying on different "characters", or fabrics, or time periods through clothing could be a lot of fun. Maybe this is why vintage snd thrift stores are so popular. They challenge our comfort zone and offer a look at a different time.
Dunster Castle is so beautiful, I love the view of it from the road too. You look very much at home in those beautiful rooms! By the way, I love teapots too!😊

I think you hit on it...PLAY is so important! I thought art was my play time, and sometimes it is BUT I think it's important to move our bodies too. I don't have props, to make fun, but I do have an electric bike (which you have to peddle to keep moving) which is GREAT fun; I feel like I'm flying. I passed a buy on an electric scooter and he said how he loved it and couldn't get enough of it. I feel the same with my bike. I'm 72 years old and I don't have the muscles to peddle up the steep hill to my house but my new bike is like having wings.
I love the words about being wild. I, however find meaning in, "We belong amongst the wild flowers, listening to the wind and trees converse. You are so right Wendy. In fact I struggle to be a grown up and I'm 58 😂 in this difficult world I spend most of it in fluff fairies and bunting whenever I can. I chuckled at your sweaty issue as I used to be a flamenco dancer so you would definitely hate the sweaty issue there. But on the up side my skin was fabulous, I think the sweating cleansed it 😊 carry on being you, you're such a beautiful soul and btw I'm REALLY loving that pink wig colour on you Petal xx

I have a wig that's dreadlocks and a cap that I brought back from Jamaica and I love it but I definitely don't wear it enough!! I kept my graduation board and hav some other random stuff like rocky horror golden hat and st Patrick's day dress up stuff. I used to love Halloween for making my own costumes and masks or crazy makeup. You really suit the pink wig, love it. I love dangly things too, I have a little white light up tree for random small dangly things. I keep editing this message as I go through your video lol. I have a colour changing diffuser/humidifier for essential oils and love it. I got a box of loads of essential oils that I still need to experiment with!! Yes the not being able to find my glasses thing encouraged me to buy and later make my own straps to hang my glasses around my neck instead of putting them down. I have a pin board for random quotes and inspiration. My fave quote at the moment is 'Life is too important to be taken seriously!' (Oscar Wilde). Very fitting for the themes in this video ❤ Take care xx

Darling Wendy Wendy darling I love listening to Beatrice potter stories on a cd especially when I feel vulnerable I don't care how crazy that is I like it and it helps me feel safe. Thanks for sharing the "behind the scenes" of your creative space. I also like to burn incense - usually patchouli or nag champa. I also like moss that I have collected on camping trips. I like my little plant babies and different little things I have made like mandarin orange peel mushrooms on a mossy stick. I enjoy listening to music as well while I paint, sometimes Cat Steven's or John Denver or even some very old-timey 40s music. I don't really dress up, but I DO have my own quirky style and just tend to wear what I like. 😊
I have many children’s books in my studio:) Most I buy for the art work. I have lots of fairy shawls and gloves, hats, scarves. And lastly, in each little corner , nook and cranny I have little fairy doors, rocks, crystals, and mossy sticks. ❤

I have tried to plant seeds of creative freedoms and truthful free spirit attitudes. Pure joy and play should be a lifetime achievement. I'm trying to release the social conditioning that I was taught and encourage my Granny babies to be their own happily ever after. Be unique and silly if it makes you happy. I have a very magical home.....not a plain white box. I hope that someday long after im gone someone asks my children or Grandchildren what's your favorite memories of her and they say her creativity and authenticity and the way she made me feel. I continuously burn incense sticks, especially with frankincense and lavender and I hope they will keep that aroma memory of my home as well. I love watching your channel. You are lovely and beautiful like the fairies that you paint. A world without walls.....I think there's a journal there....just imagine how lovely❤
