  • Also make sure your solvents won’t mix, and preferably have very different densities so they easily separate.

    Note: alkaloids in their non polar (free base) form may be oils and liquid at room temperature. So if you want to filter them out it’s better to filter out from the polar (salted) state.

      @ILiveInWackyTown Haha thanks and I don’t know or care what’s in style. I’m still growing my hair out though. Despite being super simple hopefully if anyone intends to do an acid base extraction this is just the foundation of their knowledge on it and they learn more after watching the video. Pretty simple to not cause an explosion though, just don’t have fire near your flammable solvent

    Lol that was hilarious. Totally correct and a nice explanation. Perhaps you should make a part 2 and add something about safe solvents to use and how you can wash a solution multiple times to achieve an arbitrary level of purity. Don't want people accidentally harming themselves with salsa extract that's contaminated with say benzine etc ;)

    • @DrAndrewHutchings
      @DrAndrewHutchings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Perhaps. I just didn’t want to make a video where I literally do all the work for someone but I could give some extra tips. As for solvent. I actually think it would be pretty much fine to use gasoline although I haven’t used it yet, so long as it’s not your final solvent your stuff is in, and you clean your product properly. Of course it’s not ideal though, but I thought about it when thinking of how to save money. It seems like you know some of this stuff already and don’t personally need another video, do you?

    • @DrAndrewHutchings

    6:32 Most plants do not have alkaloids, least not in amounts detectable by current science methods, but when they do, indeed they most often have more than a single one.
    8:14 "pie-path" 🤣
    Salsa having Tomatoes probably has a very minute amount of alkaloids too - interesting intuitive choice.
    Also, whoever tells me the guy's not stoned as f@¢k has had way too much alkaloids for the day.
    Regardless his explanation is very easy to understand and helpful, and I am honored that an online hippie assumed I know what protonation and amines are, to name a few things.

      @@DrAndrewHutchingsthank you for your reply. One question: if the alkaloids are basic or neutral, what makes them go into the non polar solvent. As I am currently understanding I would dissolve the crude plant material in a polar solvent such as water but would need to acidify the water to solubilize the alkaloids, then add a non polar solvent, the alkaloids go into that, then I discard the aqueous layer, add back the polar solvent(water), then add an acid to protonate the alkaloids and they now go into the polar solvent (water) and I discard the non polar layer. Then I am able to crystallize the alkaloids in water by evaporation? Or by cooling here’s where Im sort of hung up. Any help much appreciated.

      @@DrAndrewHutchings my first was on Mucinex DM pills in high school. Empty orange juice bottle, used sodium carbonate as my alkali instead of ammonia or NaOH. (Put baking soda in the oven to produce it). Crushed the pills up with a hammer in some foil to contain ir(it poked holes tho so had to use layers and get creative).
      Then I added the crushed pills to the sodium carbonate water that is alkaline. Shake the shit out of it for a while, then I used naptha to pull the freebased dxm. Used ziplock bag to seperate from the aqueous layer.
      Then I used country time lemonade mix as my acid hahahahaa. Made super strong lemonade mix to shake with the naphtha containing freebase dxm. This formed dxm citrate which stays in aqueous lemonade layer. Use ziplock bag as a sep funnel again by cutting a corner off, capturing the lemonade fraction. Then I boiled that down extra concentrated and drank it. Hard to know exact amount of citric acid in it so it would come out pretty sour and I had to add more sodium carbonate to my final product sometimes to bring up the pH slightly too avoid stomach irritation.
      Pretty ghetto but it worked! Modified the ammonia and naptha tek from érowid with things I had on hand and it worked! That's what made me feel like a real chemist! Plus, when jt feels like you're doing something wrong it's more fun :)
