  • The Grand Canyon: it’s a well known landmark, but knowing about it and experiencing it are two very different things. I had limited time to see it in late May so I wanted the best bang for my buck in terms of time for hiking.
The South Kaibab trail did not disappoint! Hiking the whole 6 mile trail is brutal and I didn’t even attempt it because it was mid day by the time I started and it was scheduled to be at least 100 degrees F at the bottom of the canyon that day. There was even a ranger on the trail advising hikers NOT to do the whole trail that day because of the conditions and difficulty of the hike. It is a fairly steep downhill trail…which means it’s a steep uphill climb back to the trailhead. That is what makes it brutal. This is NOT a trail to try to conquer in one day, BUT for a day hike you can go just 1 mile down to Ooh Aah point and have spectacular views of the canyon. For me that was more than enough.
