This music video is the peak of what it means to be an indie artist. The song is ingenious and not like anything else out there, and the video is also very well produced, mixing really beautiful sceneries, accentuating Caroline's beauty, at the same time containing dark undertones
people commenting on how bad this video is..: this video was ahead of its time, and still must be to some degree if people aren't seeing how amazing this video truly is... the sequencing and patterns of the clips that are being datamoshed are brilliant and very intricate. the corruptions could look a lot messier, but it's well planned. one of my favorite videos.
Im scrolling through Chairlift's discography after finding out Caroline's been in the industry for a while. I recognize a lot more songs than I anticipated. Wild.
@@Y0utubeIsFuckingHomo 💯.. I dig the solo stuff, but Chairlift was better. But hey, I was a young thing listening to Chairlift, and they were brilliant and timely, and what Caroline is doing now is as well, and I get that people are going to have a bias largely geared towards what they experience in their youth. For me, this song is the pinnacle, and this video is an absolutely masterpiece, but then this song and video were part of many intimate and beautiful experiences I had as an early/mid 20 something. I can get people not appreciating it as much as I do, but what I can’t abide is people saying the video is bad… Kids need to eat more psychedelics, and less benzos, or whatever misleading them to thinking this is bad. Put a tab under your tongue and watch it again, there’s no way they’re going to still think it’s bad art…

I'm glad I discovered caroline and then ramona Lisa and now discovering chairlift I'm in love with Ms. Polachek's work! this video is definitely ahead of its time
I watched this for the first time on acid, it was crazy. Now I am watching it in a normal state, and guess what, its still fucking crazy. This is an excellently made music video, fucking go chairlift
I’m returning to this for the first time in a while, and I am happy to see my friends and I were not at all alone in tripping with this video back in the day. I was 22 when this came out, we probably first watched it when there was barely 1000 views on it, and it became one of the videos I would show people for years if I tripped with them.. 13 years later, it’s still incredible, and this song is just as infectious as ever!
Never thought i would see live Caroline Polachek i remember listening to this years ago i may say maybe 8 years or more. Brought me so much joy, like a dream come true. It wasn't chairlift but sure incredible, I love Caroline bc she is so talented and creative and she was huge parte of this group as the others
Still one of my favourite videos. I love how the changes in scene don't match the music, and they appear in places you least expect. It gives me this funny feeling, like pushing on putty with my fingers but with my brain. Anyone reminded of those 3d magic eye books?
What's cool about this video for me (as someone who's been into music videos for many years) is that if I'd been watching it on TV -- like most of my experiences with music videos had been until about the mid-2000s -- it wouldn't have had the same effect. The visuals took on meaning for me because I was watching the video on TH-cam and have had my fair share of buffering and streaming issues over the years. Like, I knew they were intentional, but I was always asking in the back of my mind, "what if it's a glitch?" I don't know for sure that that's what the directors were going for, but if it was, then that was pretty forward-thinking of them! Basically the internet version of burnt and corrupted film effects lol
I’d say all the above, but also the trailing, bleeding, colorful kind of effects your vision is subjected to when you’re tripping. I always felt like it was simultaneously referencing psychedelics and those kinds of glitching digital effects, but the exact artistic intentions I’m not sure.
@@nikolademitri731 "the exact artistic intentions I’m not sure" - probably: "...it looks cool". I don't think that many artists are sitting there thinking of some sort of deep symbolic meaning every time they're doing any particular thing. Sometimes it's just about the aesthetics, and that's fine and good.
For all people doubting quality of this video - so you know and don't sound dumb, these are not compression artifacts - it's the style of the video. It'll look the same everywhere.
Best video of 2009. Period. If you understand that time and the dramatic change we saw between 2007-09 with the end of the 2000s 70s revival (which led on from the 90s 60s revival) and the beginning of the 2010s 80s dreampop revival. This video was about 4 years ahead of its time but is still sooo 2009
The only way I can think of to do this effect would be to output a sequence from FCP7 without rendering and applying a bunch of effects to each track and just stack the videos one on top of the other. I am really impressed that someone finally did something creative with this glitch in digital editing software (even if this was done purposefully in an actual graphics program like after effects or something)
This is a great video. I first saw that effect ('datamoshing'?) in a music video by the Presets (Down Down Down) but man it is a so trippy and well done with the timing of the song.
sort of... but less blurry you know more focused images. I guess it depends on the dose too . I had friends who just saw"cool" distortions so I guess it depends on the person ME and another friend who've been studying the mind and the occult we actually saw out of this world shit and perceptions I can't explain LIKE telepathy.. I use to draw on a sketch pad app on my phone which has a option to draw symmetrical things so I discovered slot of patterns on acid. some of the ancient figures like every angle of the 5'6'8'10'12 pointed STARS. the meaning of the 12 on the clock and how it relates to. "time" And the location of Saturn and how Rolex uses those sacred patterns to create their watches. if you go on Rolex.com you're gonna see all their stuff is based on metrology numerology. the 12 on the clock wasn't a 12 before it was something different which the Romans used which is why watches have the old version. sounds crazy? yup not everyone's cup of tea lol but oh well psychedelics are. "fun" to some and a teacher to the rest of us. like tupac said once you can see the rules of the game it becomes a game you can play and only then will you make it . X6X
I have been tripping to this video, and sharing it with my friends for over 3 years now. it just never gets old. always an lsd staple, but it's just as great sober.
The images' overriding element , it's like when the digital signal stream hangs or sputters, loses continuity... here I see somebody's learned to control it and add to it. Pretty cool. (and yeah, when a tv channel is 'offline' that way I HAVE recorded bits of it... found it fascinating... like Fauve painting) I'd like to live is such a landscape. For short whiles at least. The girl quite appealing when she comes thru in moments. The song's cool too.
Ok so I watched the video, loved it, and then I realized I wasn't in the highest quality...so I watched it again, because well.. if you're gonna see something this epic you must go all the way :)
