    In the winter of 1972-73 My wife and small 2 year old daughter and I took our 26 ft. Westerly Centaur from La Harve to Sete France. It took us 4 months. It was very cold and very foggy. Visibility was very limited. Sometimes we could only see the the bow running lights. Days were short and the locks were only worked during day light hours. Many times the Keepers let us tie up in the locks for the night. They were special people.

      @@sailingrubyrose Well I am 78 years old now so I don't think so, but I thought at the time that if I was to do it again it would be in a 30 ft. cabin cruiser with central heating. Of course I would have some problems with some of the bridges over the canals. At the time it was the cheapest way to travel in Europe...less than 5 Dollars a day.

    Ah Trebes! Last September, while mooring our 60' rental canal boat to the shore just downstream from the locks, the mallet/lump hammer used for hammering in the provided mooring stakes decided to let loose its 5 kilo head into the air on the upswing! I just covered my head with my hands and wished for the best as I waited for the mass of metal to return to earth.

    Ah yes, the famous French lunch break at the lock! Nothing to do but learn to live with it. The water gushing reminded me of a time when while approaching a lock with our shallow draft canal boat. An oncoming boat was being lowered so the water was gushing out, we pulled over to the side, but after the initial rush of water came by we found ourselves aground in what shouldn't have been that shallow. But it was and took some time to power off the bottom. Also, we were a little too far from shore to jump with a line so that idea was out, and no other boats were in line at the end of the day. Funny stuff. Thanks for the great and interesting quality of your videos.

    • @sailingrubyrose

      Where was this? In the French canals or somewhere else?

    • @paulp7365
      @paulp7365 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      French Canal de Bourgogne. We were headed between St Remy to Veneray Les Laumes. It is a less utilized canal as we only saw maybe one boat a day and even a wrecked abandoned ancient un-propelled barge. Rarely saw a road until a village popped up, and train would occasionally pass too far to hear. Lock houses still had shell holes from WWII and this was in the 1990's.

  • @Krieghandt
    @Krieghandt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's not that your mast is too long, it's that your boat is too short ;) Can't wait to see the rest of the tour. Say, any chance you will be doing some of the English river canals? I know some are big enough for barges. The true narrow canals I don't think you can navigate, but the big deep river ones shouldn't be an issue.

      Oh yes, we found that the hard way. And keeping them in a salt water environment voids the warranty

    omg, I get so worried when we go under short bridges! I love this series very much. As far as the vloggers I watch, no one has done this trip. Thanks for it all :)

    I'm really enjoying your canal adventures. It seems you tie up in open fields more than towns. Is that because of cost? Or is space harder to come by in towns?

      Depends. Sometimes we just want the solitude

    Thought of you guys when we wandered down to the Carcassonne bridge and train station back in late June on our whirlwind driving tour - simply gorgeous around that area.

    Would you do it again. Seems like a lot of work and little time to enjoy the stop Some?

      Yes we would do it again. And yes we would slow down

    Not that you were taking samples, but what would be your opinion of the canal water? Brown from sediment or possibly somewhat polluted? Thanks.

      Some parts of the midi are a bit grim. But elsewhere it’s just sediment. Lots of fish in there

    I am curious. Once you are tied up in a lock, about how long does it take to fill. Ten minutes, 1/2 hour or longer?
