    I definitely disagree on "barely puts pressure". Mangonels add a lot of pressure to anyone who's castle is exposed to their infinite hail of free deadly rocks.
    An attacking army that usually moves rapidly. is under fire from various other sources and also isn't there for that long nor "screen-filling".
    But someone's castle and worker population is usually there long-term, and also pretty safe against bolts and arrows (and far enough away from them to be out of range most of the time anyway). Mangonels, on the other hand, will repeatedly kill defending and other military units, peasants and workers as well as the goods they transport, but also deal significant damage to economic buildings over time, and all of that with little to no manual targetting / attention required, and with no added cost over time. (Edit: Bonus points, mangonels can hit units on enemy towers, which tower ballistae cannot.)

    • @ScurvyBoi
      @ScurvyBoi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think he was mainly referring to putting pressure on the AI, that dealing with the mangonels as a player is super stressful, but for the AI it isn't, so it 'Barely puts pressure' in the sense that the AI lords don't really care, psychologically speaking

    • @Heroesflorian
      @Heroesflorian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ScurvyBoi well but especially AI can't properly / at all deal with mangonels firing at them, and mangonels are one of the easiest (and fun) ways to pressure and bring down the AI over time, without actually having to do much.
      Players, on the other hand, can intentionally target and attack the mangonel with re-located archers, use portable shields or cheap slaves as meatshields, set up a trebuchet to bring down the mangonel tower, or potentially move out of mangonel range with his economy buildings (as opposed to fixed-castle AIs) etc.
      So if human players are already getting stressed out by mangonels, the actual effect on AI is much more severe (even when they don't have emotions).
      Even if he meant "pyschologically speaking" AIs are immune to mangonels, then tower ballista are still worse as they simply can't hit units on enemy towers, so there's exactly zero pressure from them, when the AI is on the defense.

    1:25 Maybe not on lords that are litreally in your castle because you can simply use xbows with some shields to completely shut them down but on medium range where you can build some towers away from your keep, set mangonels and call it a day they will drain enemy of wealth by killing troops, economy and perhaps high value buildings from time to time like filled granary or armory while you deal with other AIs.

      My favourite strategy in ai skirmishes. I always build at least 6 mangonels that constantly carpet siege the enemy castle while building up my army to deal the final blow. The damage from just 1 mangonel constantly firing at the enemy is significant. Workers returning with goods get killed, troops get killed and need to be replaced, armory and granary getting destroyed means even more economic damage, as well as weapon workshops needing 100 or 200 gold to replace. It quickly adds up.

    I like mangonel more...
    But the one thing really annoying is it can damage your wall (thou it's not really, it more like lower your wall height when you use normal height wall or highest wall) while AI's mangonels doesn't cause any damage to friendly wall....
    I don't mind friendly fire to my own army since i like mangonel's one hit KO regardless of unit's hp (2 or 3 againts siege engines) and aoe damage ability....
    Ballistas, while it better than mangonels, since it only can do damage to 1 unit at time make it less useful than mangonels to defending large scale assault....

  • @Kolt461

    In my opinion:
    Ballistas: Pretty much required on games where your enemies focus on Hardcore siege (Richard's Trebuchets)
    Mangonel: Very situational, only useful if enemy castle is nearby. Can also be quite useful if you see a pattern on where the enemy likes to setup their assault force(where they place their army and siege engines when they begin warning you via message), you can force attack the area, I remember using this technique in one of the Stronghold Extreme levels i just forgot since it was years ago.

  • @RoulicisThe
    @RoulicisThe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Each of them have their use but I do prefer ballista for just one simple reason :
    Mangonel is specialised to handle large groups of Infantry, while Ballistas are meant to snipe siege engines from afar.
    While there are plenty other ways to prevent Infantry from reaching your walls (tar pits, moats, archers, crossbows, etc...) the tools available to demolish siege are much more scarce, making ballistas much more useful.
    Archers an crossbows can't destroy a siege tower before it reaches the walls, but ballistas can. And that can make a big difference between losing the castle and keeping it.

  • @freddy4603
    @freddy4603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I prefer ballistas because siege towers are a pain and because I already have a answer to swarms in the form of archers and crossbowmen.
    But I really wish the mangonel was better. It's just so cool It pains me each time to place what amounts to a good crossbowmen instead of a hellish rock rain that needs no refills.

    Mangonels are also useful as the stones can overshot its maximum range so they can hit things much further away. So just because you can't directly target something doesn't mean you won't hit it.

    Both requires "manual" fire but ballista aint afraid to shoot at single unit
    Both have great range but maybe its me but their AoE of mang seems to have more range since the precision is random

  • @NexterZulu

    I use ballistas more, but sometimes the times call for the mangonel. It's so fun to build multiple towers with mangonels and aim them at the enemy castle, to see it slowly crumble. Also if there is a route that the enemies use to attack your castle, several mangonels aimed there creates a fun little game where you can see how many units get through. But siege engines are pain in the ass usually, so the ballista is my main choice.

  • @fadhilyudistira8819
    @fadhilyudistira8819 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    the main idea of using mangonel against any nearby enemy keeps is to do three things:
    1) harming resource workers on their way to the stockpile, it doesn't do much but a delay in delivery is a delay in moneymaking. the deficit will eventually build up.
    2) take out expensive buildings like churches and cathedrals or granaries and armory, thus deal strong consistent impact on intervals, especially after they failed to attack your castle.
    3) delay the offense. AI lords often keep their troops around the keep before sending them out to the field. Everyone have their own specific ideal army size before attacking and preventing them to reach the optimal number will either force them to send a small raiding party to stop the mangonel (which the stationed archers can handle easily) or just suck it up and keep pumping out money to make up for the loss.
    Mangonels aren't something you really use for taking out heavy cheap structures like towers and gates, but rather to deal with anyone stationed on it. Teaming it up with the trebuchet is never an opportunity you should pass up on.

    Most of the time, mangonels are programmed to have less precision and feel rigged like playing gambling games. Their miss rate is so high unless there are many units in a cluster
    Unless for enemies, their success rate is high that you can quickly run out of soldiers if you don't destroy them first (the best way to prevent them to be rebuilt is by keeping the tower ruins intact)

    Mangonels if they can be manually set to reach a prime target. Balistas if there is distance. Trebuchets behind castle walls to manually set to blast slow moving enemy troop clusters along with fire pits of course. I don't need balistas to take out seige equipment. When I hear the first crunch of an enemy AI hitting my walls with stone, that's when I pivot to making my first offensive units, be it knight, maceman or horse archer, and send them out to handle it.

    Its simple - Ballistas are in 99% of the case the better choice because mangonels almost never hit catapults, sieg tower, rams etc. its so rare, they are useless against them and you need something to take down the siege units. So u either use knights to raid them or balistas. Fire balistats are very endangered on the ground when attack and normal ballistas are safe on the tower.

    If you are doing the campaign or a match were you are in mangonel range of an enemy castle, I recommend setting up at least 3 mangonels on 3 square towers as soon as possible while you build up your economy and armory, 3 mangonels constantly hammering the enemy castle will cripple them after awhile, sometimes completely breaking their economy because they keep buying stone to repair your constant attacks, leaving you with a skeleton of an enemy castle that 20 macemen can easily kill the enemy lord. Just be sure to disband/target elsewhere on the mangonels before moving troops in because you can easily lose a third of your army if you try to go in while it's hailing rocks x3

Then build your stone carriers right near your stockpile. Watch closely at what happens to the stone carriers; like I said, it's game-breaking and the #1 way to make fast gold. You must have your stone stacks completely inaccessible though. Let me know when you try it.

      Speak for yourself. One of the greatest games ever made. I’ve been playing it on and off since I was a kid. Never gets old. Currently working my way through it once again with the new unofficial crusader patch.
