I think this was a no-call because the ball carrier also lowered his head at the last moment. I could be wrong, but seems like the refs are sometimes more lenient when the tackler seems to trying to do the right thing and the ball carrier helps to initiate the contact.

College broadly tends to be pretty generous on those calls on RPOs compared to NFL. At most, he is about 1/4 to 1/2 yard over the 1 yard line at the point of release. Greatest 1st Football game ever! I live in NorCal and like CAL but been a Miami fan since i was 7.5 in '91 when i watched them crush TX in the Cotton Bowl. This was my 1st fiitball game with tickets behind the Endzone Miami had to score in during the 4th, 50 rows up. Nobody caught the "forward pass" or the OL ahead until Sun.
Ward wasn't over the line of scrimmage on the dump off to Martinez; whole body would've had to be past the 25-yard line; he was on the line and arm was on the 26 for the release.
