- The music is from a play called War Horse, it's about a horse in world war I who gets sold to the army, various things happen and he ends up in no mans land where his previous owner finds him. i really want to go see this play sometime in the holiday, and i really love this song (if you watch the trailer for it it has the same song)
oh yeah i didn't have any clips of rain so she doesn't exsist in my video, if i did have the clips i would put her in somewhere.
yays seven subscribers!
Hope you enjoy it!
By the way, for those who have asked for them, because they can't seem to be found anywhere else i have tried to listen to the music and record what they are myself. some of them may not be completely accurate but at least i tried.
A wager, a hat full of guinnies,
against all their songs you can sing,
but some day you'll love
and the next day you'll lose
and winter will turn into spring
and the snow falls, the wind calls
the year turns round again
and like barley corn who rose from the grain (could be grave)
a new year will rise up again
and there will come a time of great plenty
a time of good harvest and son
till then put your trust in tomorrow my friend
for yesterdays over and gone
Ploughed, sown, weat (or weed) and mown
the year turns round again
and like barley corn who rose from the grain (could be grave)
a new year will rise up again
a feeling arise, a gleam in her eyes
and the year turns ound again
and like barley corn who rose from the grain (could be grave)
a new year will rise up again
I still come back to this song from time to time and especially when i’m down. Greetings from 2022!
Its a fantastic play, I've seen it as I know a guy in it who incidently sings this song, it is well worth a look in, its running until Feb. 2010!
Saw it a couple months ago, so powerful, everyone was crying before anything bad even happened!!!!!
Likewise, I was in tears with the opening music before the play really started
I've been listening to this song over and over again for almost half an hour now. It is so beautiful! and of course, to make it more emotional, it reminds me of War Horse, how brilliant the play is, and the horrific and tragic history behind it!
I find a bittersweet hypnotic beauty to this work. I know the inevitable end, yet still cannot look away, and hope upon hopeful hope that this loving heart will find the love he fought, and survived for. I know the curse of the dreamer, all too well. “A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world." Oscar Wilde Bless you for not soiling it with an advertisement! Be Well, and Stay Strong, Will
war horse is one the greatest plays in london.
i hope all school pupils can see it.
@PaperMonicle I went to see it the other day and I really want to go again! The horse puppets are incredible! And the music is gorgeous!
This piece of music is on my all time favourites list. It is so haunting and so beautiful and John Tams sings it perfectly. It would be fabulous if Speilberg kept this song in the movie.
It's epic when they play this song in the play, Really good experience.
Thank you so much for posting this!
Yes, I was being sarcastic - the tune of The Star of the County Down IS originally English and is, in fact, one of the tunes used for John Barleycorn. 20th century composer Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote a set of variations on it, though he called the tune 'Dives and Lazarus' (Another traditional song it is used for)
It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that John Tames' deliberately wrote 'Snow Falls' to sound like 'John Barleycorn' as he mentions it in the lyrics.
Wondeful video =) This song is actually called The Staro of the County Down, but they made other lyrics for it in the War Horse play =D
The First line in the Lyrics is:
I'll wager a hat full of guinees (old english currency)
John Barleycorn (legend) was a farm hand who was murdered and thrown onto the land. IT rained and he 'arose' from his grave.
Phoebe is 'the moon'. Its reference has Wicca/Pagan origins. The 'old religion' in england followed gods and goddesses
this song shall be played at my funeral.
Indeed =) the point is that the result of what the whole orchestra played sounded like this song =D And in our sheet music it is called the star of the county down =D
I had the great pleasure of seeing War Horse in London, and I must say, it was one of the most life changing plays I've ever seen. :')
Loved the movie, don't know if the play has been to Perth yet.
When i was watching the movie i kept thinking of Spirit, especially the bond between the horses and humans and the scene where he and Topthorn are pulling the cannon. =) Beautiful song. =)
I'm in tears.
you have to see the show, its marvellous.
An Amazing film and brilliant use of a song that already had my emotions going
This song, is so beautiful, I've seen it on stage, and it is equally amazing
Notes on the lyrics:
* It's "I'll wager a hat-full of guineas". A guinea is an old British coin
** It's "And like Barleycorn, who rose from the grave" John Barleycorn is an old British folk tale, involving death and resurrection, and it is a metaphor for the harvest, and making beer and ale from barley.
*** It's "Plowed, sown, reaped and mown". This is again a reference to planting and harvest.
Saw this when I went to London. Totally fits!
Love the song and the show :) went to see it with my school a few months ago and want to see it again
i saw the warhorse play with the puppets (mindblown)
Thanks for sharing, it was beautiful. War Horse is coming to our city next Spring, can not wait to see it.
""Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way." - Martin Luther King Jr
Truth, and divine misery, reads the same, in all tongues, and across all times. The British lost 8 million horses during WW-1. The monument that stands to remember these noble beasts reads; "They Never Had The Choice...."
@nessasONLINEshow Awesome, i'm hopefully going to go see it soon, i really, really want to see it.
Full, corrected lyrics, with notes:
I'll wager a hat-full of guineas*
Against all of the songs you can sing
That one day you'll love and the next day you'll lose
And winter will turn into spring
And the snow falls
The wind calls
The year turns round again
And like Barleycorn, who rose from the grave**
A new year will rise up again
And there will come a time of great plenty
A time of good harvest and song
'Til then put your trust in tomorrow my friend
For yesterday's over and done
Reason why you would probably have difficulty in trying to find the lyrics to the song is because it's an adaptation of Tams' 'Snow Falls'... the lyrics are mostly the same but rearranged differently.
i've seen the play, it's awesome ;) brilliant song
**** And finally, it's "Phoebe arise, a gleam in her eyes". Phoebe is a female personification of the moon (paired with John Barleycorn's personification of barley and the harvest), and is again a reference to the harvest and the cycle of life represented in the play.
I enjoyed your video very much, and was glad to be able to hear the whole song again. War Horse is hands down the most astonishing and affecting piece of theatre I've ever seen.
I hope these lyric corrections are helpful.
It was written by John Tams for the National Theatre's 1980 production of 'Lark Rise to Candleford' (though this version MURDERS his tune) - You can find his version by searching on his name.
There is, (I hope to God) no 'Broadway' arrangement of Snow Falls' that I know of (and if it exists PLEASE don't tell me. I don't want to know!). English folk is about it.
Lyrics continued:
Plowed, sown, reaped*** and mown
The year turns round again
And like Barleycorn who rose from the grave
A new year will rise up again
Phoebe**** arise, a gleam in her eyes
The year turns round again
And like Barleycorn who rose from the grave
A new year will rise up again
The Correct Chorus Lyrics:
Ploughed, sowed, reaped and mowed
The Year turns around again
And like (John ) Barleycorn
Who rose from the grave
The year turns around again
saw this play yesterday, absolutely fantastic. you HAVE to go see it :]
Well, I played star of the county down in the orchestra, and it sounds almost exactly like this =)
awesomesauce
It has the same number of syllables per line - and that is the ONLY resemblance to Star of the County Down. The tune is original, written by John Tams. (though this version only bears a rough resemblance to the tune as he wrote it)
@XTaylorXSwift The 'Song Man' (as they call him in the show's programme) is not miming, his style is very similar to Eykens but there are notable differences, especially since his performance is live and therefore not as flawless as Eyken's on the soundtrack. Now the Song Man could change in performances but I believe the constant performer on the West End so far has been Saul Rose, a notable folk artist. However it might have been a different performer, it depends on the night
there is a book i did not know this i shall have to read it! but i may be going to see the play in october half term yay! it is an awsome song though!
Lol that is a brilliant response ^^
you are quite correct. this is sung by tim van eycken
allright x) It's a bit hard to percieve sarcasm in a written text. And there is no need to be sarcastic.
Wellwell, I've heard that the star of the county down is from the 19th century. =P but it doesn't matter. Star of the county down, kingsfold, dives and lazarus, if you could run to kolob or whatever, it is the same melody!
i hope to be seing it soon, i will be really disapointed if i dont get to see it.
Thanks ^^
i really want to, the puppetry looks amazing.
@XTaylorXSwift Sorry, also forgot to say that there has been a change of cast since War Horse was first on the West End. The original Song Man was Eyken himself, now it is Saul Rose. I'm not 100% if there was anyone in between but details can usually be found online as to when either of them were playing the role
@seankozmainla Thanks! The corrected lyrics are really helpful and now make a bit more sense especially now knowing about John Barleycorn.
And i completely agree, War Horse was a truly beautiful play.
Thanks, i've just listened to the ''Scarecrow'' song and it is really good :)
spirit is my favorite movie of all time because I love horses there life my mom's dad which I my grandpa he love horses like me that's why I'm his favorite granddaughter because I'm his cowgirl I have rode a horse before and have went for a 1 hour trial ride I rode a buckskin
I would double check. The recording I have is definitely John Tams. Tim sang it during the stage play but John Tams released the recording.
..but the Star of the County Down is a traditional irish song? =P thought here is an english song called Kingsfold. And they sounds very alike =D
Cool, i thought it finished in september i shall have to see it then.
I really want to see the show
@nessasONLINEshow i don't think they can be found on the internet but i've just now tried to put together what i think the lyrics are in the description. they're not completely accurate but they're mostly right.
@nessasONLINEshow
You'll find the lyrics are adapted from an earlier song, Snow Falls. Google Snow Falls + John Tams and you'll find the lyrics. And by the way, it's grave!
Picture/Video From Spirit-Stallion Of Cirron -Such Copy Such Wow
@6045310708 Assuming that you are talking about the War Horse movie, no it wasn't. The Play and the film are different things, despite the same story. And to your second question, probably not. It is rather hard to find music from the play on TH-cam, the only reason this video has 20,000 views is because you can't listen to this song anywhere else. Plus, as far as i know at the moment, the soundtrack for the play is only for the British production.
@PaperMonicle although i do love the video i was only sayin =]
@zapaintballer The Star of the County Down =)
@inamonianim Wth do you mean by fake? It is an animation, what exactly do you expect? And anyway i think that the horses are very realistic in this film compared to other animations including horses.
no sorry i only have this song, the whole soundtrack is on itunes though.
It might do on the instrument you play but it doesn't necessarily sound like it on other instruments - that's what orchestration is all about.
don´t you know where could I get this song?? I´ve tried to find it on itunes but it´s available only for UK...
@PaperMonicle because it said HQ it helps with the bad clips and there is no hq
it fuckin tears me up .. wha happent to the animals in in wars or days past
I think it's reaped and mown. Not sure though :P
its npot even in HD
@punchjumper3744 What? What has that got to do with anything...?
Lovely song I've posted my version for guitar it's tab is on Ultimate Guitar under John Tams....Al
Just an English comment passing through
i want the lyrics to this
Do any one no where i can get them?
Hmm.... Obviously just another example of Ireland's 'find and steal' mission against English folk music.
@6045310708 tis war horse music
Thanks ^^
Thanks ^-^
