    Ever wonder where the celebrities, slept, played and hung out?
    Today, I take another nostalic and historic memory lane road trip. In this episode, I visit the famous and historic mid-century modern, Caliente Tropics Resort Hotel, in Palm Springs, CA. The hotel-motel opened in 1964 and was owned by motel tycoon, Kenneth Kimes. In the 1970s, Kimes began a relationship with criminal and convict, Sante Singhrs and spent the final years of his life embroiled in legal battles and scandal.
    The historic Caliente Tropics Resort is a mid-century modern Palm Springs architectural landmark, and one of the famous Rat Pack's hangouts back in the 1960s. It's also a well known filming location for movies and TV show like, City of Industry, Alpha Dog and The Anna Nicole Show. Anna Nicole Smith even once put her hand prints in cement here.
    Rat Pack members included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.
    Thanks for joining me on my travels on yet another trip to the past, down memory lane.

    I've been here many times and my friend Javier worked as handyman there. The little restaurant bar Reef is great for drinks and appetizers. Was there in March 2020 and it was still a busy place. The pool area is great. The Motel 6, Royal Sun and Tropics are next door to each other andcare all great properties. Sommers house is still hers although they did sell the house next door that they owned, Sonnys house on Crestview was just sold in July.

    Seeing the hotel vid brought back memories. Back in the 60's my family stayed there once or twice a year. My dad was ticket manager for the L.A. Rams and if there was an away game with a local blackout we went there. It was called The Tropics. Towards the back there were one story bungalows and another pool. I never knew it was a rat pack hangout!

    • @TheGraveyardChannel
      @TheGraveyardChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it was originally called the Tropics. How neat that you stayed there then. And thanks for sharing that history with us. They must have filled in the smaller pool to make the green grass area. Thanks Michelle 😎👍

    Wouldn't you have loved an invite to one of those parties? The Rat Pack were the definition of cool. I remember seeing Suzanne Somers in Three's Company. I also remember her as the blonde in the T-Bird in American Graffiti and one of the murder victims in Magnum Force. I find true crime stories interesting. I saw a documentary about Sante Kimes several years ago. Sometimes justice prevails, she rightfully died in prison six years ago.

    • @TheGraveyardChannel

      this was the first time i had heard about sante. i would do more true crime vlogs, but youtube advertisers frown on them and they can easily be demonitized. one of my all-time fav movies is american graffiti! you'll be getting a shout out on that one, hopefully in the not too distant future Mr HB :-)

    The Twist at 140 W. Via Lola is now redone and refurbished but back in it’s hey day it was also frequented by the Rat Pack. There was once an opening in the commercial kitchen that lead to an underground tunnel. When the Riviera would get raided for illegal gambling, they’d pop into the tunnels and head back to Via Lola.

    Good for you being safe and keeping others safe. I have watched a lot of your videos and don't think I ever commented even though I've enjoyed them so much. Alpha Dog is a great movie and I didn't know this was filmed there! Poor Anna Nicole....such a sad demise. I watch your videos on the big tv screen....very nice. You do an excellent job NOT causing vertigo

      Hi jb, thanks for watching and for commenting! I thought I was the only one who watched on a large screen. Nice to know I’m not the only one 😊👍

    I have stayed there - According to the bartender at the Reef, the Conga room below the bar was filled with concrete from cement trucks - sad way to go

    Hey Steve- Love the colorful mask! So happy you are still able to do vlogs with all the craziness going on. We love your videos and they are the bright spot in our day. So happy to see someone asked about your mom in another comment. What a cool hotel and the Eagles are the best. Nothing compares to the music of our generation. Praying you stay well, safe, and happy. Look forward to the next vlog. Take care- Chris and Dave

    Hi Steve ! You made me feel so ancient when you asked who remembers when a cup of coffee cost a nickel. I also remember that in those days Chinese restaurants almost all has Tiki motifs. These days you would be hard pressed to even find a proper "sit down" Chinese restaurant save for Chinatown. Everything is fast food, take out and delivery.

    There are still tiki torches and it is everlasting-even disney still has the tiki room at the magic kingdom.
