I've kept a 4lb bass in a big home aquarium for about 2 years until I released it back into the pond it came from at 7lbs 6oz.
Would eat ANYTHING from Purina Dog Chow to full grown bullfrogs and live feeder rats and even ate a large Banded Water Snake over 2ft long.
My buddies were going out just to see who could be known for being the person that fed it the largest or weirdest food item...
Was kept in a 7'x2'x2' Oceanic Brand Glass Aquarium with a LARGE trickle filter and fluidized sand bed filter with a canister filter for "polishing" the water that had a built in 13 watt U.V. Sterilizer inside...
I plumbed in a 2" i.d. bulkhead with a hose barb fitting that fit large sized ShopVac hose or silicone type of clear non-rigid tubing onto a ball valve that let me drain 40% of the water volume VERY quickly so I could quickly, and it very made the H²O changes almost effortless for me when I would do them on every Tuesday and Saturday...
I still have big tanks and big predatory fish, except they just are purchased from wholesale and retail tropical fish suppliers...
No more rod & reel or net caught predatory types of misc. game & non-game species of fish that are from North America... any subspecies of Micropterus salmoides just simply get so big and really the problem it the fish turning into a beggar that just bothers you so incessantly wanting more and more food... many of the different food seafood &/or most store bought fish items that can be found readily to feed suchba big greedy fish could be just as easily be used for preparing my own personal lunch or seafood dinner...
That cost to feed such a big tame beggar of "wet pet"...
I tell you that it can and will REALLY become a money pit big time... also it becomes a required substantial more needed to satiated every month if you're not able to catch them locally, a 7lb+ bass I can tell you can & ABSOLUTELY WILL just almost eat into your monthly budget plans you have in order to pay for all of life's little things as dadgum lightning fast.... just as if it was simply just another big ol' Gizzard Shad with such a huge, literally never-ending, giant @ss un'freakin' believable... "Feed me Seymore!!!!".... never satisfied appetite for protein to fill that cavernously large wide reaching bucket mouth....
    The bass' name was...
Thump... because that's what would happened with anything put into the aquarium water... the bass would just thump'em & dump'em...😂

I caught a small largemouth around 3-4 pounds while trying to catch goby to use as catfish bait. I already had a tank with a bluegill I caught about a year and a half before at the time, but I didn’t really want to have to get a new fish acclimated. There was a storm coming since I was right on the business end of Lake Erie weather so I had o make up my mind quick. I was 15 at the time just to be clear, so I couldn’t drive so I rode an e-bike. I decided to keep him in my bait bucket I brought with me and there was less than 3 inches of water in it. I brought him home, got him acclimated, and he seemed to be ok. A few days later, I caught a few shiners in an aquarium net and wanted to make a Lake Erie-type habitat so I put them in. The second the bass saw him, he had him in his mouth. Later that year, my bluegill died (not from the bass) so he (my bass) was now alone. I really needed a bigger tank for him since it was only a 20 gallon. I bought a much bigger tank for him on my birthday and got him transferred to his new home. I took out some of the water from his 20 gal tank and there was just around 3 or 4 inches of water in, and all the waste was kicked up so it was like he was living in poop water. I wasn’t sure if he was going to make it through the night. The next morning, I checked on him and he was still alive. I got him put into his tank, and by the end of the day he was eating. Ever since he got to his larger tank, he was healthier and happier and is still doing great. He’ll attack anything he sees hit the water, and he’s memorized the difference between feeder fish and my finger. One time when I was trying to feed him, he jumped out of the opening in the lid and fell 3 1/2 feet to the floor. I picked him up by the mouth as I would when I would catch a bass, and got him back in right away. He wasn’t even fazed by it. I don’t know how many crawdads I’ve tried adding to clean up the dead carcasses of feeders he missed, but he ate every single one including a monster 5 inch crawdad with huge claws. Anyway, he is a happy fish and seems to be doing very well in his tank. I didn’t think he was going to last this long. My dad had an oscar cichlid when he was in high school and called him “meathead.” Back in June 2021, he along with my brother died from carbon monoxide poisoning on a boat. In honor of my dad, I decided to name my bass “Meathead.” If it wasn’t for my dad, I would’ve never had Meathead because he is the reason why I’ve fished my whole life and also because my mom wasn’t positive about having an aquarium, but my dad still went out and bought a 38 gallon tank which has since converted to a cichlid tank. I owe it all to him. Thanks, Dad.

ABOUT 20 years ago I went to a pond and started to dive my thinly spaced net, should I say, hoping to catch baby fish...it was early spring...I caught 5 extremely small largemouth bass fry(?)...the line across their bodies was slightly/hardly visible...I chopped up earthworms, but they were so small, nobody ate...3 of the 5 died...I went to a tropical fish store and BOUGHT FROZEN BLOOD WORMS...SUCCESS...as they got bigger I fed them earthworms, small pond fish I caught, sunniest, and eventually some type of frozen fish from a supermarket...THEY GREW SUPER FAST, IN LENGTH, AND WIDTH...at least 12 inches in length...when I moved, I released back to the pond they came from...they were both raised in a 60 gallon tank that had more than enough OXYGEN PROVIDED FOR THEM BY SURFACE BREAKAGE AIR STONES...THE KEY WAS WHEN I BOUGHT THE FROZEN BLOOD WORMS

It was a brackish bayou, but as close to the mouth of the bay as we were, it was usually way too salty for any fresh water fish, aside from maybe gar and some catfish. Never in over a century of my family owning that land has a bass been seen in there by any of us, much less a small mouth.

I was going to catch my sons for his tank but was told it was quite illegal to catch and “domesticate” wild fish. We got two 3 inch largemouth from a hatchery and they are approaching 10 inches! Super cool fish to watch grow.

They are pretty smart, i have had one for almost 6 months in my turtle cage, it weakens the other fish i throw in for the turtles and it eats the scraps.

This just shows how resilient bass are.. A hook the size of its body went through it… then it was put into random tank… swam upside down its first day… and somehow managed to thrive

My mom caught a green sunfish years ago. it was in a cooler for about 6hrs before she started into cleaning that days catch. It was still alive. It lived in tap water in her tub for like a week, so she got it a tank and had it for maybe 6 years after that. Fed it earthworms and whatnot. She cried for like 2 days when it died.

I caught one less than 4” and grew him to over 16” in a 75 gallon tank and has to move so I took him back to the spot I caught him and a year later I saw him with his girlfriend and and 4 kids. He was easily identified by his mouth because it got a little messed up when I caught him originally. That’s why I kept him in the first place. I wasn’t sure if he would live.
