Hey hey! Colleen Hoover: we can't escape her. She's been popular for a while but why did SHE explode during early pantene pro-v days? There's many an article hypothesizing why so I thought I'd read them and see what they think. Let me know your CoHo thoughts down below.

I think that some people assume that reading is primarily an academic or intellectual pursuit. Once people realize that books are an art form very similar to music, television, and film you begin to understand that what people find enjoyable is highly subjective and varied. Reading is very beneficial for obtaining knowledge and information, but it can also be as pleasurable and easy to consume as anyone's favorite soap opera.

  • @tecc
    @tecc ปีที่แล้ว +240

An English teacher of mine described books that are easy to read and fun without real substance “candy books.” They’re great and enjoyable and worth reading, but sometimes you need a bigger meal to balance things out.
Her books are popular because they are easy gateway books that introduce non readers to the joys of reading. It’s not a bad thing- these books help deconstruct negative views on reading developed often through poor school experiences. They’re those books that stay close to your heart because they were your first experience with the joy of reading and what reading can be. They tell you that you can be a reader. However, once you fall deeper into the genre and familiarize yourself with the tropes involved and see them reimagined or done differently, the books stop holding up over time. We all have those books in our lives.

It may be a simpler read but that doesn’t excuse the problematic and harmful way CoHo addresses so many serious topics in her books and I think we can all be honest here, her writing is incredibly cringey. I will never comprehend how she is so popular because I cannot understand who her books cater to, it’s like the worst version of wattpad fiction getting to the publishing house. She romanticizes abuse in almost every book she writes and her style and prose is lackluster.

Colleen's books for me are quick easy reads, but I am well aware of how problematic her characters are and know a lot of these characters are not the type of people I should be dating in real life. My main concern would be more vulnerable younger people reading her toxic romances and then thinking that's normal. But then I guess that could happen with any book. I do not like how insane some of her fandom is and they call her an actual Queen. Just so many better authors out there who deserve more praise. When you're in a lawsuit/pending litigation/involved in something that could become a lawsuit, it's typical for the parties and those associated with them to not be in communication, especially written communications, as that is discoverable and could later be brought into evidence if the matter made it to court. According to Hoover, she DID talk to the girl and she thanked her for bringing it to her attention, offered to provide his address if the girl wished to look into her legal options, and reprimanded her son.
IDK the whole thing seems...less dramatic than it was made out to be on Twitter? Yes, her son was a creep for asking a 16yo to send him a picture, he shouldn't have even been talking to her. He is an adult. And he does something wrong HE needs to deal with the consequences. Not his mom.

I finally stopped reading because I would have such strong reactions and not in a good way to her stories. Anyway, it's great that people are reading her books because hopefully, it means they are reading more. Waaay back when Twilight was released, a friend encouraged me to read it. it had been years since I read for pleasure so I picked it up and even though if I read it now, I probably wouldn't like it, I loved it then, and it got me back into reading so I'd like to think that maybe someone picking up one of her books will get people reading other books. In my opinion, her books, while not very good, are simply easy to read and exciting, and -- more importantly -- Hoover's used social media to promote herself quite well, so good for her, I guess. But I believe the real thing is that when books become HUGE with fans something self-perpetuating happen. I think a lot of people want to be "part of something." They want to belong to a social group where they can share thoughts, ideas, feelings, and so on. They want to talk excitedly about all the lines and themes and characters, and then explore fan art. It becomes a sort of "reader family" they can join and feel part of. Just my opinion, of course, but I think the same thing about the rabid fandom around 50 Shades, Twilight, or even Harry Potter.

Haven't read any of her books myself, and some of the passages people point out are pretty hilarious, but I think the pearl-clutching in general is a bit dramatic. But hey, it's booktok, book twitter, etc. People are often melodramatic about things they both like and dislike; it's part of the culture.
I thought it was interesting hearing about the digestibility of her books being one of the key factors of her success. It makes sense, and I think that's what drove previously ridiculously popular books like Twilight. If her books appeal to people who consider themselves readers, great. But the audience of people who don't consider themselves readers is so huge (honestly, that quote from the woman whose fave author was Shakespeare struck me as someone who hasn't read much beyond her high school curriculum), so if they're presented with a bunch of books that are easy to consume, feel fun and dramatic in the moment, and are commonly talked about (even if they're generally mediocre), it's going to do numbers.

I'm not trying to hate on Colleen Hoover lovers so please, go forth and enjoy what you want regardless of what some random white woman on the internet thinks!
I read one Colleen Hoover - Verity - as it was touted as being a really great plot twist. I personally felt like it had a few plot holes and was overall meh to me. In my opinion, it read like a good surprising thriller to someone who has never read a thriller before or very rarely reads them - and I think that's part of what makes her popular. She doesn't slot perfectly into any categories. She doesn't quite write Thrillers, doesn't quite write Romances, doesn't quite write Women's Fiction or Erotica, and so she is inadvertently introducing people who are fans of one genres to the other genres. So it's not really the best romance ever, but if you're used to reading say Thrillers and pick up a Colleen Hoover you're gonna get a pseudo-romance with Erotica hints you propbaly aren't used to seeing in Thrillers necessarily. In that way it can feel very fresh and unpredictable. She's not the first person to mix genres like this and won't be the last, it can be super hit or miss if genre mashing like this is successful. It just seems she's sort of found a particular recipe that's working with her fans.

It tugged at my heart strings at points, but I feel like it didn’t take me all the way “there”… it was like, a dope book for a high schooler.. it made me feel like I was watching an entertaining episode of a series versus an amazing movie.

About the trash can. The trash company's deliver them or maybe the city in your case. We pick up damaged cans and/or from canceled customers, repair, power wash then deliver them. If your very lucky you get one of the brand new ones bought in bulk by the company/city. Also usually delivered by the company/city.

I read a few Colleen Hoover Books and I enjoyed it. You dont have to concentrate a Lot because Hoovers Style of Writing is very simple or unpretentiously. Reading Hoovers Books is like watching a Netflix Series and relax. A thing that kind of stresses me sometimes is that I cant develope strong emotions towards her Charakters fates and stuff Like a Lot of other readers, Her Books are great but Not on top of the world. Her characters backgrounds are very extreme and I Always feel so sorry for them. But after this Video I realised that almost the only characteristics are their traumas, we dont know more about them than them having had a hard life before....still I am pretty Sure I am gonna read more of her Books in Future bc. I think she does a great Job representing the heartbreaking fates many people have to live through in our world.

I bought Verity when it was new here in Germany. I thought it's a thriller, because it was sold as a thriller. There were no obvious signs that there'll be so much er*tic stuff in it and the awful writing of the husband... that guy was less than generic. He was an object to satisfy the protagonist's (and reader's) fantasies.
It's the worst book I've ever read. It reminded me of my weird fanfiction phase. The book is giving "I don't want to admit I love p*rn so instead I read adult books". It's the equivalent to looking at the underwear section of fashion catalogs if you know what I mean.
I'm still angry about the money I spent on that book. I threw it away after I finished it.

I've only read Verity via free audiobook and it was okay until the ending, which almost rolled my eyes out of my head. It was definitely a popcorn read for me, I wasn't looking for deep plot or characters, just an engaging storyline which I felt it delivered for the most part. I agree with what you said about her writing and characters being so blank slate that it's appealing for a self-insert type adventure. I think I paid 50 cents for It Ends With Us at a thrift book store, so that'll probably be the next one I read, if I get to it. I had to buy my own trash cans too, it was fun trying to fit them in my Toyota 🤣
