      The key is to go high enough so that people who hired you are too embarrassed and self absorbed to admit their mistake and accountability and will protect you no matter what in order to protect themselves (see abusers in church, state, hospitals, etc). It’s an absolute and despicable lack of morality

      tbh target is a private company so they are protected by at-will laws in all but 1 state. the government, on the other hand, is required to go through standard checks and balances to prevent possible power dyanmics and upheavals, bc you can easily set a precedent in law to improperly oust people without fair investigations. target has no requirement as an at-will private employer.

      I mean, there's a scandal going on right now over a family charity that appears to be entirely fraudulent and had raised many hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars. The cause was dementia. Because the founder of the charity lost his mother to dementia.
      Scamming people out of huge sums of money over the course of nearly two decades by claiming you're raising money to research the illness that *killed your own mother* also seems pretty bad. I think people are just capable of being really horrible when there's money on the line.

      George Santos has a lovely sense of humor. And truth be told, he has never been accused of trading gold bars for weapons systems to Egypt. Mr. Santos is accused of lying on his resume and receiving pandemic unemployment benefits while he was employed. These crimes are small money offenses and crimes with such a low dollar amounts are never prosecuted in federal court, unless the federal prosecutors are trying to get their names in the newspapers. Santos is also accused of spending his own campaign money recklessly. Once again, that's never prosecuted in federal court.
      The public wanted Santos held accountable for lying on his resume. That's a perfectly reasonable desire, but resume fibbing is not a crime. The George Santos show finally became too much of a distraction, so the GOP legislators received permission to torpedo the man and bring the Santos circus to an erupt end.
      I have mixed feelings about the resolution. I don't like seeing elected officials dragged into court - unless they have committed serious crimes. It is bad for democracy and bad for the constituents. Yes, I know he lied on his resume and he is appears to be a low level crook. Nonetheless, a mostly inept legislator is better than no legislator. (He was quite supportive of 9/11 firefighters and I liked that about him.) Also, he has a decent sense of humor.

      Republicans tend to be people who are older, elderly easy to deceive, those who are not older tend to be uneducated in even basic critical thinking skills. They are the prime group to do scams and tricks to. To top it all of most of them welcome the scammers and grifters with open arms.

      Yeah, if anything can be said of conservatives is that they're endlessly enthusiastic to financially support their politicians and will relentlessly defend them as obsessively as children do their favourite celebrity.
      It reminds me of why there's such a rise in "alpha male" bullshit, a lot of men just want a cheat code to get women and validation from other men. So they'll endlessly pump their funds into very obvious pyramid schemes made by men like Andrew tate. A man who claims to be pro-men but had to make his wealth through women and desperate lonely men in the cam girl industry with plenty of videos where he's giggling about taking advantage of said lonely men.

    I live in the district George Santos represents. To say he flew under the radar would be an understatement. The area has its usual share of well-known local career politicians and my family and I never heard of nor found anything on this guy leading up to the election. It did not help that Republican Lee Zeldin was running for Governor and all of the focus went onto that race, as anyone even digging slightly below the surface on Santos could’ve probably found this out before it was too late. The fact he lied about his connections to the Jewish community and 9/11 in a very Jewish area and one heavily impacted by 9/11 should say enough on its own about his character. I hope to see him and hopefully someday all other frauds like him face justice for their deceit.

    • @Nothingseen
      @Nothingseen 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its wild to remember just how much energy and time was spent on Zeldin when he didn't really have much of a chance in retrospect and how NY just IGNORED the wild story of Santos being a career fraud who won a seat. One of the JUICIEST political stories out there and nobody really cared because there was too much energy invested in a republican sweep that could even dislodge a governor of NY.

    Having studied in four, lived in seven and visited about seventy countries so far, I’m always faced with the same question: How on Earth, can a society, that gained a certain historical experience, and learned over time right from wrong, end up with a group of elected “leaders” that say and do things, no sane person would ever dare to do in public. And I’m not talking about affiliation. Irrelevant of their political beliefs, it’s always a psychopath that ends up on top.
    Last night I had a serious discussion with my partner about this. He’s American (I’m Swiss) and my question was “How can a country of 330.000.000 people elect a president like Biden or Trump or even make it possible for a pathological liar like Clinton or even Santos to make legislation for their electorate.” And he looked at me confused, asking “What’s a better solution to democracy?” And though I agree with him, I still believe there should be a vetting process, before permitting people to make decisions that would have an impact on the entire nation. I’ve seen the same in Germany and the UK, thinking to myself “How could eighty million people elect someone as Scholz to be the next Chancellor?” Why is it always that the most unfit, incompetent and cognitively dissonant become leaders?

    • @adamwyker4800
      @adamwyker4800 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Seriously nobody voted for Biden. Nobody wanted that guy. Go find podcasts from the announcement of his nomination to be the Dem candidate and I’ll give you $1000 if you find one that is glad it was him. He’s run before and got about 1% support. He’s the swampiest, most corrupt, lifetime politician, creepy old kid diddler, and total muppet empty suit.
      And that’s the guy that gets the most votes ever? The one election where voting by mail is allowed (previously outlawed for the last 40 years in the western world due to the ease at which the election can be defrauded). Losing handily in all 5 swing states on election night and flips them all. Ridiculous.
      It’s so stupid to pretend that was a fair election. But anyway you mention vetting? That’s what primaries are for…and isn’t voting the same thing as vetting? Except when one side cheats.

      here's my opinion, it's something I've thought about a LOT considering the past decades
      1. The majority of people vote emotionally, and politicians are constantly emotionally manipulating their viewers
      2. The majority of people are unaware of this manipulation, or don't think they're susceptible, making them all the more susceptible
      3. THE TWO PARTY SYSTEM!!!!!!!! THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE!!!!! we're a 'democracy' in basically spirit only, the ENTIRE voting system is screwy and constantly being messed with even more to influence it in the ways that those corrupt leaders want
      4. The entire nature of lobbying in our capitalist system - politics are purely money plays, corruption will inevitably abound
      5. We're so entrenched that nobody who has to live in the consequences knows what to fucking do about it, nor the time to figure it out in the few hours of downtime a week that we live on

    "Politics is show business for ugly people" is actually so perfect 😂 so many politicians, especially republicans, are glorified court jesters. Just an absolute laughing stock that somehow got put in a position of power. Which makes it both hilarious and terrifying 🙃
    Edit: I got to the part of the video about the disabled veteran and his sick service dog, and that's just...devastating. Scamming someone out of money they raised to get lifesaving treatment for a loved one is one of the most cold-hearted evils out there. It only makes it worse that this man's loved one was his service dog. Since he's a disabled veteran, that dog was not only a loving companion but his hero and life-saver. My heart goes out to him and the friend he lost.
    I hope all the victims of Santos' fraud get compensated for what he did to them, and I hope Santos faces the full extent of repercussions the court has for him. And I hope his expulsion from Congress is only the beginning of the consequences he'll face.
    Edit 2 (electric boogaloo): Aaaaand of course he'd lie about volunteering for a charity that helps kids with EB. He's not only incapable of telling the truth, he's incapable of doing good things. In fact, it seems the only thing he's good at is being a conman committing white-collar crimes!

The fact that Santos took money from other politicians campaigns by lying about canvassing for them doesn’t bother me that much. But this dog related exploitation really does.
