How Much Did We Grow In 4 Months? Was It Enough For Self Sufficient Living?

  • I thought it would be fun to see How Much Fresh Food we ACTUALLY Grow as we work towards being more self sufficient. So I weighed EVERYTHING that came out of ONE polytunnel during the PEAK HARVEST season from 1 July to 31 October.
    In this video I share our results and also a review of the growing season and what we learnt this year.
    We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
    Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs.
    Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.
    In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest.
    We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
    It takes us about a day to film some video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment... maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we'll message you a password for the 'members area' of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon's 💚

    All in all a very successful season for you both, and rewards for all of your hard work throughout the year. You have my sympathy with the rats - i'm currently fighting a losing battle with a squirrel that's to date taken about 60 cloves of garlic from my beds. God knows where he's stashing them all!

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow, Tony I didn't know Squirrel's would take garlic !!! I feel I need to go and check mine now as I have been thinking it feels like a long time coming up! The elephant garlic has mostly been up a while, but it was planted about a month earlier too, which really does seem to make a huge difference on getting it germinated fast it seems, I guess due to soil temps. Planting earlier may help you if you can get them up quicker/sooner. Thanks for watching/comment Tony 💚✌️🌿

    So glad I found your channel. Do you remember how many tomato and sweet pepper plants that produced those yields?

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Rebekah, Great to have you with us 💚 It was 22 tomato plants, it was a very bad yield this year, we should of had PILES more, I think it was 8-10 sweet pepper plants I had in this year ... I'm just going through all of last years videos to making a years timelapse atm, so if I come across the exact number i will let you know. Thanks for watching/commenting ✌️🌿

    What a wonderful harvest to keep you going over winter,, nothing quite like the taste of home grown,, did you find out where the rats were getting in ? We’ve got a cat on our allotments and seems to work well,,
    best wishes, Lisa

      Hi Lisa, they've dug under the doors at the front and back and could actually climb our little Door at the from if they wanted. We would love to get a cat to help, but our dog would just chase it away! 😆 You've made me think about ways we could prehaps try block them getting in though - funnily enough that hadn't crossed my mind! Thank you 🙏✌️🌿

      I have a walk in fruit cage growing blueberries and strawberries inside and I was finding a lot of strawberries half eaten detached from the plant ,, I couldn’t fathom out where they were getting in until one day, I saw a blackbird inside and it flew out at the bottom of the net,, when I checked round the base of the netting there were hundreds of holes where the rats, mice or squirrels had chewed through, letting the birds in too ,, needless to say, this winter I’ll be moving the cage and putting some stainless steel wire mesh round the base and trenching it in a foot down to keep the moles out too ,, good luck with your sorting out your poly 🤞🏽🤞🏻🤞

      Hi, Thanks for the suggestion. We do try to garden with add to many inputs, instead trying to build the soil and iife with organic matter, hoping that homemade compost will help this year too 💚✌️🌿

    That is still a great harvest. Hopefully your sweet potatoes will survive the rats this year. Im growing trombocino for the first time, so looking forward to that. Those are really big watermelons, which variety did you grow? Thank you for you amazing video BTW!

      Hi Maria, the variety of Watermelons we grow are called 'Crimson Sweet' We have decided not to put sweet potatoes in the tunnels this year ... we are trialling another plan this year that we will be sharing more on soon 😃 So glad you are enjoying our vids - thank you for saying so and your lovely comment - have fun with your Tromboncinos - let us know how they go for you 💚✌️🌿

    You had rat problems with your yacon as well, would taro help in the poly tunnel or would it take up too much room?

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Will, it was out sweet potatoes the rats got into outside too 😢 funnily enough, they seem to mostly leave Yacon and Jerusalem artichokes alone … I think it may have something to do with the fact that they can’t burp or fart! Another reaso. They are great crops 🙌 thanks for watching 💚✌️🌿
