Hey man, Just recently made the switch from lightroom to capture one.
As a hobby photographer the adobe subscription does not work for me, to help the transition i was looking for some videos on youtube. most of them are hour long. glad to see you are making a series to help us understand the programme and excel in it.
Just wanted to show my gratitude and hit that subscription!

Out of curiosity, what features do you use frequently in Capture one that you would miss going without if you moved back to LR?

Thank you for starting this series. I'm a Capture One user, and I'll be looking forward to seeing how you work with the program.
One thought on what you said. I do travel photography, and I use Sessions instead of Catalogs for this reason. Assume your entire collection is saved in one Catalog. That file will become massive, and every time you make the slightest change to any individual photo in that catalog, the file will be marked as having changed.
I use Time Machine to backup my computer on an external drive. Even the slightest change will change that huge file, and Time Machine will back up yet another copy of it. Because catalogs are so huge, your backup drive will quickly fill up ... at least that's what I understand.
By working with Sessions, you are working with smaller, more manageable files - and saving an incredible amount of backup space.

I'm really looking forward to the series! I have been using all of the major photo editors but keep on going back to Capture One. The results are always far better. I find that I trip a over the nuances of Capture One. This is why I am so interested in what Ted will be doing -- he has a way of making what he talks about so much more simple.

Thanks Ted. I tried Luminar and Lightroom but settled on Capture One because for me it seemed to be the easiest to use. I don't do much in post processing, but the little I do is right at my fingertips. I do use Sessions rather than Catalogs; that system seems to work better for me. I'm looking forward to your additional videos on Capture One. I'm a slow learner when it comes to technology, so being able to reference back to your videos is a huge help. Thanks again, man!

Great video Ted. I started my photography journey two years ago this coming Christmas. I bought C1 and subscribed to Adobe at the same time. I was a newbie on both platforms. I think I opened Adobe a half dozen times. C1 was just more intuitive to me and (although C1 tends to sharpen the initial RAW more than Lightroom) I was always so much more impressed with the initial file. C1 has some great tutorials online. The manipulation of color in C1 is astounding. I love that I can buy it and it belongs to me, rather than leasing it from Adobe. I don't think I save that much money (I keep updating C1 every year because of great new functionality (ie Luminosity masking)), but owning the software makes more sense to me, especially if times get hard. With a lease, you will be shut out as soon as you cancel. Looking forward to future videos on C1!

Would love a session on the colour wheels. How to use them to correct colours, not make wild colour changes. EG my Nikon’s usually have yellow biased greens and need to be corrected in Capture 1 - works ok in other editors. I have made custom camera profiles for use in Capture that do help significantly.
Also, if you have a line to Phase, how do we create shortcut keys to edit in photoshop and open in photoshop. The edit in was available a few versions ago but has been taken away. The open in has never had short cut key ability. This is a major announce for round tripping into photoshop. Can only do it via menus.

as a photography teacher Lightroom / CR is the editing standard in a lot of schools. I usually don’t recommend starting students to step into Capture1 because of the not so welcoming interface and all the extra editing tools. As a professional photographer though, I use Capture1 as my base editing software. It extracts so much more information out of my files and most importantly of all the RAW editing software available, Capture1 gives me the opportunity to create my style of editing. That is the main key of chosing your base RAW editing software.

Yes. I just bought an x-t3 and the files looked horrible in LR. Epecially the sharpening. After some searching around I found and tried Cap One and was blown away. So much so I bought the Pro version to use with my Canon files.
I'm not pleased at all with Cap One and the Canon files. To my eye the RAW conversion looks awful compared to LR. I'm new to Cap One so I'm probably doing something wrong as most people seem to love Cap One.
I'll just have to research it a bit more. Perhaps it's a matter of building a custom icc profile?

I have just switched to Fuji after being a Nikon user for 20 years.
My current workflow is built around Lightroom. I have read that there are worming issues in LR with Fuji Raw files. I have been looking into Capture One and it looks like a great alternative. I like how C1 supports the Fuji files and offers all the Fuji film simulations.
The main thing I am missing is the option to merge HDR raw files, I know there are several HDR merge plugins available, but as far as I know, none of them let you save the merged image as a DNG or other RAW file format, losing the RAW benefits when bringing the merged image back into C1.
The alternative is to keep using LR with the Iridient X-Transformer plug-in. The downside is that LR doesn't support the Fuji system as well as C1.
I was wondering whether you have any thoughts on this and how you handle the lack of HDR merge in C1.

  • @chrissoclone
    @chrissoclone 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Fuji's film profiles have always been around in Lightroom in the same manner, in fact one large reason why I still use Lightroom is that I can use the film profiles with Raws from my older Fuji cameras (X-E1, X-T1) while Capture One only supports film curves for newer models. If that wasn't the case I would've probably switched already, since C1's rendering is otherwise so much nicer.

    • @f.brugge5730

I agree with a kind of sadness. When announced “Now support Fujifilm cameras and styles”
No exclusions were named you had it find it in the small print somewhere on the Phase One website.
I hear the same mistake again in the video, no exclusions made.
To be honest after downloading supported raw files from DP Review, it works great.
I upgrade to an XE-3 shortly but I won’t switch, I have 1000’s of older files and the rendering of skin tones is not to my taste at all.

Also a little bit frustrating in C1 is the (De-)Noise panel: I can't get the good results as in Lightroom. Whatever I tried and do Lightroom's results are always better. I watched so many C1 tutorials to achieve better results but sill not so much luck in that regard.

i think most of us are fairly well verse with LightRoom. Is it possible to do a compare-and-contrast between Capture One and LightRoom? By that i mean, do a full image edit, on both softwares, to showcase the difference in workflow, and then the final output.
As a LightRoom user myself, i heard many good things about Capture One, but i think it will really be helpful if we can compare how each stage of the editing would be like on both softwares, and also "pixel peep" at the final result in the end.

So Capture One has a catalogue. Does it work the same way as the Lightroom catalogue? Assume all file management has to be done inside Capture One, yes? More on the organizational side of Capture One please.

I usually use Capure One for Sony. Is a good software, shadow recovery and noise reduction are truly efficient, also sharpness panel is smart. "Clarity" tool is very good for tonal and color contrasts to get pop images (but it greatly increases the noise).
However tools that require more precision like the HSV color panel, contrast and micro-contrast panel are not well studied. Also is very incomplete software. It is VERY basic.
Would you like to try a very complete program, with a really precise HSV panel and lots of improvement tools for raw (except for noise reduction which is not valid - the best noise reduction is Dfine2 Nick collection)?
    Try RawTherapee.

    • @ianyorke2617
      @ianyorke2617 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I am not sure I would call C1 basic? It is a raw converter like LR and not a pixel editor like PS. Have you used the Advanced Colour Editor, it even has a dedicated skin retouching tab? With layers, excellent selection tools including generating selections from the Advanced Colour Editor and masks that can be refined, feathered (like PS), inverted, copied to other layers, and a Luma curve which means you can vary tone (contrast) without impacting colours I find I only go to a pixel editor like PS for extensive pixel mangling cloning out objects, replacing skies etc.

I use Capture One for quite some time now. Extremely awesome tool...when it works. For me it's quite unstable, crashes often on exiting and exporting since version 12. Also the trash bin is bugged, may result in deleted but broken files that you cannot get rid of any other way than creating a new library and importing your old one (don't delete too many pictures at once, I'm warning you). Regardless I will stay with them as this program has been vastly superior for me in contrast to LR.
Otherwise I don't know if I'd recommend the Pro version if you're not a student (edu licences can be bought for cheap) and only use one brand. They update the software once a year. Hence "future proof" is not entirely correct imho, as you'd set yourself up to the costly upgrades once a year. These are more expensive for the Pro version of course. So keep the follow up costs in mind if you want the latest version. Just my two cents.

    • @MGrose407

I agree about not needing the pro unless you work with a lot of cameras and in the future if you do switch at least you’ve saved money during the time you used either Fuji or Sony. It’s definitely not perfect CP1 10 crashed a lot for me in the recipe exports. Haven’t had any problems with 12 so far using the Fuji version

While not for everyone, I actually like working with an unchanging software, even if it's not there most up to date version. Stability and familiar are my reasons.
And if you're a working commercially, BUY THE FULL VERSION. In the commercial industry, renting specialized cameras is so common you'd be shooting yourself in the foot to just use the version for your brand. I own mostly Sony now but rent medium format whenever I have a big project with the budget for it.

I use C1Pro 12 for FujiFilm Camera raw files. It is intense but worth the effort. Since your doing a series could you do one to explain how to get true blacks in B&W photos, and how to fix color casts like yellow and brown. I learned about color balance some but really don’t understand how to use it yet. Black and white is my favorite any help is appreciated!!

You touched a bit on sessions vs catalogs and if possible it would be nice if you could expand upon that. I use sessions all the time because it's easy and gives me the folder structure you mentioned, makes organizing so much easier as I often work across two or three computers.

Hate to say this but, after many years use of Photoshop Elements and its very user-friendly interface (and as a rusted on Luddite), I found Capture One (2022 version trial copy) and this video a study in confusion-plus!!! Perhaps a less rushed intro video for the absolute beginner on the latest version of C1 might help someone like me. Also a book called "Capture One for Dummies" could be useful!

I have used LR since its launch and have become mildly proficient in PS for what I need (a lot of photo restoration and wildlife). So, what would be your top three technical (not cost) reasons to switch? I shoot mostly Nikon (thousands of images going back to the D3x and on through to the D5 and D850 plus both the Z6 and Z7), but I also have a fair number of Sony ARW files and lots of old photo scans using a CanoScan 9950F. Thanks for your opinions regarding this question!

Hi liove he channel especially the history and documentaries of photographers. I used to shoot alot on film but left the hobby. Just started to get involved with digital. I'm a little overwhelmed with how I should be processing my raw files. Since I'm a newbie with digital I dont know which way yo go Lr or capture. Is there any info on walking through the workflow with both programs? A little overwhelming! Lol

I’ve toyed with moving to Capture One from Lightroom and what puts me off isn’t the feature set, it’s the fact that I’ve got a workflow which involves running Lightroom Classic on my main Mac synchronising particular folders to Lightroom on my laptop and mobile devices. I think until Capture One has a way to duplicate that, (or perhaps it does and I’ve missed it!) I’m not able to consider moving..

One of the most frustrating things about C1 is the layout. The constant clicking in and out of tabs to do edits that seemingly go hand-in-hand was maddening. For example, in this video you explained the camera profile is in one tab and the lens profile is in another. Why? It makes no sense to separate them. They go hand-in-hand. Those two belong in the same place. That's just one example. If I want to adjust color, its in one tab, exposure is in another tab, cropping is in another tab. Too much clicking! I hate to say it but this is something Lightroom does sooooo much better than just about every other raw editing software. The interface, layout, and controls are way more intuitive. It's all in one scroll menu and related editing sliders are grouped together. The exposure, white balance, shadows, highlights, blacks and whites sliders are all in one place as they should be. The camera nd lens profiles is one one place as it should be. The highlights and shadows sliders is another thing that bothered me. You can only go one way with it. What if I want to bring down shadows? In Lr, the slider is in the middle and you can darken your shadows without touching your highlights. C1 you can't. It the It just seems a little archaic in my opinion. I tried to get into it because it renders Fuji RAF files the best but unfortunately it interrupted my workflow too much and I just ended up being frustrated

Hi Ted, Long time LR user and considering the switch over to Capture 1. All of my imagery is completely organized from top to bottom using collections and metadata(keywording, geo-tagging, the works). I would love to know your thoughts on conversion of the entire library to C1 and perhaps the best method, and of course any tricks to smooth the process. I'm aware that many of the lightroom edits wont transfer which is what it is. I regularly do pano-stitching and while Capture one doesn't have it at the moment, curious if you have any recommendations for other stitching software the could couple with C1 that outputs a RAW or DNG option. Thank you for all the time and great content.

    Question related to part one
Can you backup/copy the catalogue to another off machine location or separate drive ?
I have on two or three occasions needed to point to a copy in early Lightroom 3.
    Thanks Ted

I'm no Lightroom proponent, but just to be clear, and maybe others have mentioned this already, the Fuji film profiles/curves are available in Lightroom as well. It's not specific to Cap 1.

Frankly, at first Capture One was so easy to me to look cheap... But it's definitely effective! PLUS you can move the individual photo folder anywhere, 'cause C1 system files inside it are enough for the software to rebuild your last stage of that workflow 👍 👍 👍 👍

I am considering Capture One right now; growing tired of Lightroom. Looking forward to your future videos.
I think I'd like to process edits on my local drive and then move the processed files to a catalog on an external drive for storage. Instructions on how to do that would be appreciated. Importing files from Lightroom (and keeping Lightroom edits, if possible) is something I also like to see.

Believe I heard that LR catalogs WITH EDITS can now be imported into C1? Would love to tutorial on that. I have 100k+ RAW images, and would hope to import the original files with LR corrections applied as C1 [non-destructive] edits. Also, does C1 support JPG images now? Think it used not to. Thanks!

I'm currently a Lightroom user and have been looking at Capture One. One thing I'm concerned with is how C1 does and organizes photos in is catalogs. Does it for any organizing of where files are stored on the drive or is it tamper free with those and just saves edits in the catalog? I'm concerned that if I make the editor switch I'll mess up how I'm currently storing files on disk. Thanks.

Yay Ted! Adobe out grew me. I found Sony .arw files OOC always look better w/CaptureOne than LR. I get better results more easily. Recently I've been frustrated though. I like to make adjustments on a calibrated cheap IPS monitor and print on Canon Pro 10. Everything works great mostly..... Now when I'm working on a file with the proofing on, it gets pixilated when I magnify. If I turn off proofing that's the only way to magnify 100% clearly. I must have changed a setting unwittingly. If you can assist that'd be so good. But you can't be everybody's fixer upper either. So I summarize that I'm excited to follow your C1 instructional series like your other vids in the past. Good man, if I say so.
