Hey man, Just recently made the switch from lightroom to capture one. As a hobby photographer the adobe subscription does not work for me, to help the transition i was looking for some videos on youtube. most of them are hour long. glad to see you are making a series to help us understand the programme and excel in it. Just wanted to show my gratitude and hit that subscription!
Thank you for starting this series. I'm a Capture One user, and I'll be looking forward to seeing how you work with the program. One thought on what you said. I do travel photography, and I use Sessions instead of Catalogs for this reason. Assume your entire collection is saved in one Catalog. That file will become massive, and every time you make the slightest change to any individual photo in that catalog, the file will be marked as having changed. I use Time Machine to backup my computer on an external drive. Even the slightest change will change that huge file, and Time Machine will back up yet another copy of it. Because catalogs are so huge, your backup drive will quickly fill up ... at least that's what I understand. By working with Sessions, you are working with smaller, more manageable files - and saving an incredible amount of backup space.
Cool to hear you're going to do a whole series on Capture One. It's a great photo editor, and I'm very happy with it. Two things I'd like to see you cover: 1. The use of Luma Range. 2. Soft proofing for print. Thanks!
Clarification of the versions. Capture One Express is a cut down free version for Fujifilm and Sony. There is also Capture One Pro for Fujifilm and Sony and Capture One Pro for all cameras.
I'm really looking forward to the series! I have been using all of the major photo editors but keep on going back to Capture One. The results are always far better. I find that I trip a over the nuances of Capture One. This is why I am so interested in what Ted will be doing -- he has a way of making what he talks about so much more simple.
Thanks Ted. I tried Luminar and Lightroom but settled on Capture One because for me it seemed to be the easiest to use. I don't do much in post processing, but the little I do is right at my fingertips. I do use Sessions rather than Catalogs; that system seems to work better for me. I'm looking forward to your additional videos on Capture One. I'm a slow learner when it comes to technology, so being able to reference back to your videos is a huge help. Thanks again, man!
Became a super fan of Capture One when Adobe started the subscriptions..made the switch and never looked back..love this program. Like adobe the longer you stick with the program the better you will become. Make the jump and you’ll never regret it.
Very happy that you are doing these videos. I've been using C1 Pro for over a year and still like to see what I don't know I don't know. Vids on layers, masking, soft proofing for output would be nice.
As a Fuji user (and Capture One Fuji owner) I've been really trying to make the move over from lightroom. Hopefully your vids will tip the scale. Following this.
Well done! Interesting that Fuji has their film profiles available in the RAW editing pathway. Keep up the excellent work. I look forward to additional videos.
I switched to Capture One a while back and never looked back. The learning curve in my opinion was not that bad. Phase One has some great videos to help you understand the interface and once you start going, you begin to realize that it works very well and in my opinion is much better than LR.
Great video Ted. I started my photography journey two years ago this coming Christmas. I bought C1 and subscribed to Adobe at the same time. I was a newbie on both platforms. I think I opened Adobe a half dozen times. C1 was just more intuitive to me and (although C1 tends to sharpen the initial RAW more than Lightroom) I was always so much more impressed with the initial file. C1 has some great tutorials online. The manipulation of color in C1 is astounding. I love that I can buy it and it belongs to me, rather than leasing it from Adobe. I don't think I save that much money (I keep updating C1 every year because of great new functionality (ie Luminosity masking)), but owning the software makes more sense to me, especially if times get hard. With a lease, you will be shut out as soon as you cancel. Looking forward to future videos on C1!
Ted, I use Capture One Express for Fuji occasionally but still use Lightroom and Photoshop more. I like the results from Capture One better sometimes, but struggle with local adjustments, so I'm really interested in the masking feature. I think this will be an excellent series and I'm looking forward to it very much. Thanks!
Thanks for making it. I've bought C1 probably watching your earlier video but I was looking for something like this series. Thanks again. Looking forward to it.
C1 seems to get more out of the Fuji raw files, not just in terms of sharpness, but dynamic range, recovery, tones, transitions etc. Looking forward to seeing this series...
Yes. I just bought an x-t3 and the files looked horrible in LR. Epecially the sharpening. After some searching around I found and tried Cap One and was blown away. So much so I bought the Pro version to use with my Canon files. I'm not pleased at all with Cap One and the Canon files. To my eye the RAW conversion looks awful compared to LR. I'm new to Cap One so I'm probably doing something wrong as most people seem to love Cap One. I'll just have to research it a bit more. Perhaps it's a matter of building a custom icc profile?
@@raylotier Haven't used it for Canon files, but I'm sure each camera brand/sensor requires different defaults and approaches. Maybe check on the base characteristics/curve drop down menu, or lens profile drop down to make sure it's picking up your exif data
@@tjkrueger2655 Yeah, thanks. I'm a complete noob to Capture One so there is a learning curve but so far I do like it. Watching Ted's video here, he explains that the linear curve is the flat raw profile. I'll play around with that.
as a photography teacher Lightroom / CR is the editing standard in a lot of schools. I usually don’t recommend starting students to step into Capture1 because of the not so welcoming interface and all the extra editing tools. As a professional photographer though, I use Capture1 as my base editing software. It extracts so much more information out of my files and most importantly of all the RAW editing software available, Capture1 gives me the opportunity to create my style of editing. That is the main key of chosing your base RAW editing software.
just messed up an export(the jpegs came out at 30 mb each), and then voila you showed me the perfect time saving wayto crunch them down at the end of the video, thanks. Great video as always
Hey Ted, Loving your channel. You and it are why I downloaded Capture One and have been happily diving into it for the past week. I'm just starting out as a headshot photographer in L.A., and I'd love it if you did a walkthrough of shooting tethered, setting up any presets to automatically adjust the image as it comes in, and any editing you'd do in post. Thanks again for the awesome channel.
Wondering about your mobile work flow - you’ve talked about Lightroom mobile syncing, Gnarbox and now C1. If you start editing in Lightroom on iPad how do you integrate with C1?
I have just switched to Fuji after being a Nikon user for 20 years. My current workflow is built around Lightroom. I have read that there are worming issues in LR with Fuji Raw files. I have been looking into Capture One and it looks like a great alternative. I like how C1 supports the Fuji files and offers all the Fuji film simulations. The main thing I am missing is the option to merge HDR raw files, I know there are several HDR merge plugins available, but as far as I know, none of them let you save the merged image as a DNG or other RAW file format, losing the RAW benefits when bringing the merged image back into C1. The alternative is to keep using LR with the Iridient X-Transformer plug-in. The downside is that LR doesn't support the Fuji system as well as C1. I was wondering whether you have any thoughts on this and how you handle the lack of HDR merge in C1.
Would love a session on the colour wheels. How to use them to correct colours, not make wild colour changes. EG my Nikon’s usually have yellow biased greens and need to be corrected in Capture 1 - works ok in other editors. I have made custom camera profiles for use in Capture that do help significantly. Also, if you have a line to Phase, how do we create shortcut keys to edit in photoshop and open in photoshop. The edit in was available a few versions ago but has been taken away. The open in has never had short cut key ability. This is a major announce for round tripping into photoshop. Can only do it via menus.
Thanks, Ted. Been using C1 for a little over a year and love it. Lately, I started using my Fuji X-T3 with a vintage PENTACON bellows & slide copying kit. While I found some decent techniques to convert both BW and color negatives after importing them into C1 (which I saved as user styles), I would love to get your input on working with digitized analog negatives in this great program.
Perfect timing Ted! Just got out of that ridiculously priced cloud and bought Capture One 12 instead. I wish for a tutorial on the equivalent of LR brush-tool which I have used to make eyes pop and for dodging and burning. And one on skin retouching, if possible. Really looking forward to this C1 series! /Filip from Sweden
@Filip Svensson, Adobe Photographer plan is $9.99/month USD, CaptureOne is $24/month almost 2.5x month. You have to buy a year at a time to get it just under 2x as much. Is Capture One twice as good?
I switched from LR to C1 a year ago when i bought a Sony A7R3 and i absolutely love it (i had to rearrange the panels though to fit my taste). The only thing i don't like is the noise reduction. I find it very weak as it blurs the image so much.
I thought you would never ask. I got an XT-3 and I really like the processing of Capture One for Fuji raw files. Layers and color correction would be my interests. Thanks!
I'm very happy with C1, which is a great addition to my Fuji camera. I will be interesting about your serie of videos - ready to follow them. Details section, color balance wheels and jpg export options depending on screen or printing will be some subjects I would like to discover more. Thanks for your videos!
Please show the process of selecting and marking the keepers of a large set of images you import and the issues and techniques associated with this initial selection.
Fuji's film profiles have always been around in Lightroom in the same manner, in fact one large reason why I still use Lightroom is that I can use the film profiles with Raws from my older Fuji cameras (X-E1, X-T1) while Capture One only supports film curves for newer models. If that wasn't the case I would've probably switched already, since C1's rendering is otherwise so much nicer.
I agree with a kind of sadness. When announced “Now support Fujifilm cameras and styles” No exclusions were named you had it find it in the small print somewhere on the Phase One website. I hear the same mistake again in the video, no exclusions made. To be honest after downloading supported raw files from DP Review, it works great. I upgrade to an XE-3 shortly but I won’t switch, I have 1000’s of older files and the rendering of skin tones is not to my taste at all.
Awesome idea and video! I will be waiting for the videos on Capture One because I have just started using the program and I like the way you explain it! Thanks so much!
Interesting! I started using Capture One BEFORE they implemented Catalogs and didn't use it for long because of that... I think these videos will get me back up to speed with what other software can do better than Adobe!
Made my switch to C1 Pro last year. It's awesome. The only thing that is missing: Panorama stitching feature that Lightroom offers. Also a little bit frustrating in C1 is the (De-)Noise panel: I can't get the good results as in Lightroom. Whatever I tried and do Lightroom's results are always better. I watched so many C1 tutorials to achieve better results but sill not so much luck in that regard.
I’ve toyed with moving to Capture One from Lightroom and what puts me off isn’t the feature set, it’s the fact that I’ve got a workflow which involves running Lightroom Classic on my main Mac synchronising particular folders to Lightroom on my laptop and mobile devices. I think until Capture One has a way to duplicate that, (or perhaps it does and I’ve missed it!) I’m not able to consider moving..
So Capture One has a catalogue. Does it work the same way as the Lightroom catalogue? Assume all file management has to be done inside Capture One, yes? Does it have image versions, colour labelling, keywording, collections/albums, etc. Is there a limit on catalogue size? Does it generate and store image previews? More on the organizational side of Capture One please.
I downloaded the free trial yesterday evening after trying to get my camera tethered to Darktable. Got tethering working like a breeze but got desperate about exporting the files. Watched some youtube this morning and was ready for my studio shoot at 10:00. Now my pics are somewhat ready for delivery. But i will have a second look at them to see if I can improve something. All raw developers and image editing software has a learning curve. I don’t think this one is worse.
Well, I've downloaded Capture 21 trial version and it looks a little different than this older version but I have a much bigger problem. I'm trying to do all of my work on an external LaCie which had the unique problem of not showing up in the normal tree of options (the 3 dots) but instead off to the sidebar menu. It took me about an HOUR to figure that one out. Why it's not showing up as an icon within the desktop folder is mind boggling. After solving that issue, CO won't load any images from the destination folder except... a mistaken snippet of video! No JPEGS or RAW files at all despite definitely being in the folder. I'm already into the 2nd week of trial mode and honestly, I may be looking to a more intuitive program. TBC...
You touched a bit on sessions vs catalogs and if possible it would be nice if you could expand upon that. I use sessions all the time because it's easy and gives me the folder structure you mentioned, makes organizing so much easier as I often work across two or three computers.
Excelent information and video, sure shows how good you are as a Teacher Ted Forbes! Funny, I remember when one of the options we had in the earlier Image Manipulation Programs was White Balance and how that will alter the look or Color in general of an image. Fastforward to now and many color specifics of Films(like FUJI)are part of the editing process. Very exciting times we live in, thanks for sharing so much through your channel Ted Forbes!
i think most of us are fairly well verse with LightRoom. Is it possible to do a compare-and-contrast between Capture One and LightRoom? By that i mean, do a full image edit, on both softwares, to showcase the difference in workflow, and then the final output. As a LightRoom user myself, i heard many good things about Capture One, but i think it will really be helpful if we can compare how each stage of the editing would be like on both softwares, and also "pixel peep" at the final result in the end.
What do you do to prevent files disappearing, that you thought were saved in Capture One? What do you do with folders that say you have 0 files in it, when you have 20?
And that is exactly what I do not want to be happen! You import the files to your catalog and end up with a double amount of data on your harddrive. Is it not possible to have the images on one place and not import but reference to the original file place? I'm struggling with this and it's the reason I do not use C1 and stay using LR
Well this is exciting. I've been interested in Capture One but am one of those who is a bit intimidated by it. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Im a Fuji Shooter. Looking forward to the series, as I have stopped using Lr . Can you touch on round trip editing using affinity photo. As I do miss the pano stitching that Lr has. Thanks
First, thank you for doing this, much appreciated. I really enjoyed this initial video, and as a result just picked up the Pro version, as I recently switched from Fuji to Sony. I would find it very helpful for step by step instructions how to import my Lightroom library into C1 (my photo images reside in an external hard drive connected to a MacBook Pro. My plan is to maintain my CC subscription while learning C1.
Frankly, at first Capture One was so easy to me to look cheap... But it's definitely effective! PLUS you can move the individual photo folder anywhere, 'cause C1 system files inside it are enough for the software to rebuild your last stage of that workflow 👍 👍 👍 👍
Capture One Pro has been my favorite for years. Funny whenever I mention that on Twitter or Instagram. Lightroom users feel like they’re is nothing better than their Adobe software. The versatility of COPro is just unmatched. Happy to see you starting this series. Only issue I have with COPro is the lack of a mobile iOS or Android solution.
There is Capture Pilot for the iPad though I imagine that has its limits. Tbh, I haven't used any mobile image editor aside from cropping/layout for Instagram
Ava Vikman I remember trying it & it was not exactly what I needed. The Lightroom ecosystem was far more robust for mobile workflow. But I gave up my CC plan & that really feels like something I may start up again just to have on the go more powerful workflow.
CW Daly Look into Capture Pilot. With CP I can sync COP from my laptop to my Ipad and IPhone via WiFi. I love COP especially when shooting tethered. It’s super fast!
"Lightroom users feel like they’re is nothing better than their Adobe software. The versatility of COPro is just unmatched". So what you're saying is COPro users feel like they're is nothing better than their PhaseOne software?
I'm no Lightroom proponent, but just to be clear, and maybe others have mentioned this already, the Fuji film profiles/curves are available in Lightroom as well. It's not specific to Cap 1.
I agree. Capture One is a wonderful program and relative easy to use. For someone coming from Lightroom you can rearrange the program to mirror the look of Lightroom.
I'm so used to Lightroom that I can't be bothered to move to C1. However, I did play with it and the one thing that would make me switch over is how slow Lightroom is. Adobe really needs to step it up.
Hey Ted! Great video and glad you're going to be diving deeper into the capabilities of Capture One. A closer look into the organization of files and related metadata would be awesome. Also - and this may not be 100% related to the C1 thread is what do you do when you shoot Hasselblad (X1D or other) and the files are incompatible? As always - love the vlog! Thanks for your contributions.
I'm currently a Lightroom user and have been looking at Capture One. One thing I'm concerned with is how C1 does and organizes photos in is catalogs. Does it for any organizing of where files are stored on the drive or is it tamper free with those and just saves edits in the catalog? I'm concerned that if I make the editor switch I'll mess up how I'm currently storing files on disk. Thanks.
I use C1Pro 12 for FujiFilm Camera raw files. It is intense but worth the effort. Since your doing a series could you do one to explain how to get true blacks in B&W photos, and how to fix color casts like yellow and brown. I learned about color balance some but really don’t understand how to use it yet. Black and white is my favorite any help is appreciated!!
I usually use Capure One for Sony. Is a good software, shadow recovery and noise reduction are truly efficient, also sharpness panel is smart. "Clarity" tool is very good for tonal and color contrasts to get pop images (but it greatly increases the noise). However tools that require more precision like the HSV color panel, contrast and micro-contrast panel are not well studied. Also is very incomplete software. It is VERY basic. Would you like to try a very complete program, with a really precise HSV panel and lots of improvement tools for raw (except for noise reduction which is not valid - the best noise reduction is Dfine2 Nick collection)? Try RawTherapee.
I am not sure I would call C1 basic? It is a raw converter like LR and not a pixel editor like PS. Have you used the Advanced Colour Editor, it even has a dedicated skin retouching tab? With layers, excellent selection tools including generating selections from the Advanced Colour Editor and masks that can be refined, feathered (like PS), inverted, copied to other layers, and a Luma curve which means you can vary tone (contrast) without impacting colours I find I only go to a pixel editor like PS for extensive pixel mangling cloning out objects, replacing skies etc.
I wish I can really say what I want to say. But because it is a public form. I will say thank you and I cant wait to see all the videos you are getting ready to do!!!!!!

C1 rules. I use it since version 6, I can't imagine to work in a different way. Live view and tethering are a godsend :D

Great timing, I have less than a month left on my Adobe subscription. I've been trying alternatives the past several weeks.
Thanks Ted, looking forward to more. I need to know how to do some preliminary “bulk” editing. Thanks
Please show the process of selecting and marking the keepers of a large set of images you import and the issues and techniques associated with this initial selection.
Color Grading on C1... and what's more effective to run C1 faster. Using Catalogs or using Sessions?
Great start to what should be another excellent series thanks Ted!🇬🇧🇨🇦🇬🇧
Fuji's film profiles have always been around in Lightroom in the same manner, in fact one large reason why I still use Lightroom is that I can use the film profiles with Raws from my older Fuji cameras (X-E1, X-T1) while Capture One only supports film curves for newer models. If that wasn't the case I would've probably switched already, since C1's rendering is otherwise so much nicer.
I agree with a kind of sadness. When announced “Now support Fujifilm cameras and styles”
No exclusions were named you had it find it in the small print somewhere on the Phase One website.
Does Capture 1 have function that highlights the dust spots on your photo for ease of editing?
Ted, thx for doing this, if you don't mind I like to have a short one about how to turn Sessions into Catalogs.
Can Capture work as an extension to Apple Photos?
How do you export more than one image? I seem to only do 1 at a time now that I know you can do the batch export
just make sure you have the ones you want to export selected when doing more than one
TBC...
Thank me for clarifying the Catalogs vs Sessions. This for me was very confusing at the beginning.
How many photos can c1 hold in one single catalog? I googled, someone said not many. As a pro, how many do you store in your catalog?
Thank you @@DJVARAO - i did not know such videos exist. The link is much appreciated.
Wow, you, Sir, made it that much more difficult to start with this program. No idea what a Catalogue is or should be anymore.
Been wanting to try capture one for a while now !
What do you do to prevent files disappearing, that you thought were saved in Capture One? What do you do with folders that say you have 0 files in it, when you have 20?
Does tethering on location require an internet connection?
Love it! Would greatly appreciate understanding the difference between sessions and catalogs and how to use them in different situations.
Sessions all the way, jpg outputs to Apple Photos. Love C1!
@@wilhinds8144 Thanks, I'll look in to it again
I'm no Lightroom proponent, but just to be clear, and maybe others have mentioned this already, the Fuji film profiles/curves are available in Lightroom as well. It's not specific to Cap 1.
You've finally got me to give it a more serious try.
Looking forward to the series.
I want to know layers, color corrections and skin tones
I'm currently a Lightroom user and have been looking at Capture One. One thing I'm concerned with is how C1 does and organizes photos in is catalogs. Does it for any organizing of where files are stored on the drive or is it tamper free with those and just saves edits in the catalog? I'm concerned that if I make the editor switch I'll mess up how I'm currently storing files on disk. Thanks.
Love C1. I have a sneaky suspicious that they are working on porting it to iPad OS which would be killa.
What if I don't want to create a "catalogue" or a "session", I just want to have my files reside in my windows folders?
This is really helpful, please make one on layers, overlays and watermarks.
literally just purchased Capture One about two hours ago and this is the next upload i see in my subscriptions! thank you!
In defence of the session feature: It might be the main reason I‘m using C1. This makes projects very portable and shareable.
New to photo editing and C1. Can anyone recommend a useful reference or references for editing fundamentals?
Cool video and perfect timing as I plan to test it for my Fuji files 👌🏻
