    This was a great video. My main problem is I get decision fatigue. I have so many unused kits from my CTMH days and now I am starting to have unused products from SU. I also have YEARS of photos that I need to document. I may try to start with paper first, that is a great idea. When I was taught scrapbooking 20ish years ago, the person I learned from was strictly photos first. Another interesting thing I learned from your video is to NOT use that matching color for a photo mat. That is interesting to me. I was always taught to find the most vibrant color in your photo and match that for your mats. You used that bright pink example and it was an "ah ha" moment for me. I never thought about it actually taking away from the photo. I spend most of my crafty time organizing and repackaging all of the SU products into a system that works in my craft room because I just can't seem to get started. I may just now find time to sit down and attempt to scrapbook again. Thank you for your tips.

      I totally understand the decision fatigue, Patti! It’s actually one of my biggest struggles and why it takes me days to do a layout! I have to keep walking away and coming back to it fresh. Creating the kits like this is so helpful because a lot of the decisions are made and you don’t have to feel like you’re creating a LO start to finish with all the decisions that come with it. Of course everyone is different and some people can make quick decisions (my sister being one of those types of people!) But try this out and see if it helps!
      I think a lot of people have that same theory of choosing the brightest color for the mats. There’s not a hard and fast rule for selecting colors and paper but when you actually hold the papers up I think more often than not you’ll see that that way of doing it doesn’t always work to make the photos pop. Instead, try using that color maybe as a mat around the entire LO, as a frame style layout. Then add just small pops of it in clusters. Depends on the photos and paper and what the color is, etc. So many factors… 😂

      @@pattih3256 I had this exact same problem. What I started to do is to tell myself to just pull out some photos that I want to scrap. Then I move on to Just pull out some papers and invariably I end up scrapping little bits at a time. This is easiest if you have a dedicated space. So, I just leave it set up and tend to walk into my scrap room and get a little done at a time. My husband said “why not just try to do a page a week”. I’ve been trying this and it’s helped me. I’m starting to get some pages done. My friends and I also send each other our completed layouts via text to keep each other motivated.

    This vid was sooooo helpful!!! I have struggled to make kits from SU paper packs as I think they have been designed for card making more and the scale isn’t diverse enough for scrapbooking. Thank you for showing your problem solving process eg bringing in another paper pack that is more generic ❤that. Oh and I ❤ the photo selection process too, soooo very helpful. Tricks I didn’t know you could do eg: the swipe to return to previous view etc.

    Loved this video! I would like to see more of these. I do very similar to you. I always make kits and then work off of the kits whether it’s at home or pulling them for a retreat. I love seeing how others do it so I can hone my process. The only thing I do different is I choose the pictures first as I’m sure most do. I can kind of see why you do it this way now. It enables you to make use of the new papers right away rather than putting them away and forgetting about them. I may just try this. I have a retreat in February that we do every year and I want to start getting some packets together. What I would love to see if how you get the embellishments ready for a kit or do you not add those. For a retreat I try to add my embellishments to the kits as well since I won’t be in my scrap room. Great video!

    • @JaymaMalme

      It makes it so much easier to get things done when you pre-plan! Definitely do what works for you...we don't all think the same way. Try it out with paper first but you can always go back to starting with photos. Every now and then if I have photos that really inspire me, I'll start with them and then choose paper. But I've just gotten used to choosing paper first!
      I love seeing how people do things too :) I will definitely keep in mind to do more videos like this. I don't typically add the embellishments to the kit, but will have the ones in mind that I want to use. I use a lot of stamps and dies so I will usually stamp and die-cut a bunch before I start - more than I need because I hate stopping in the middle of embellishing to make more! LOL! If I have stickers or something pre-made for a layout, then I'd probably add that to my kit. If I'm packing for a retreat, I will pull the stamps/dies I plan to use and set them aside to pack also, but will just keep them separate. Sometimes I'll have multiple kits that I may use the same stamps/dies on. Hope that helps! Thanks for the note!

    • @kristenoliver43
      @kristenoliver43 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ one of my biggest issues is when I go to a retreat I have to fly. Unfortunately can’t take my die cut machine so I really need to get some of that ready ahead of time. I have 3 friends that all bring their cricut machines so I don’t need to bring mine anymore. However I really prefer to have my own machine with me but that is just too much. I have a retreat in Feb that we do every year. I’m thinking of getting all my layouts ready with the sketch for each.

    • @JaymaMalme
      @JaymaMalme  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@kristenoliver43it’s hard to fly and be restricted but that’s what I did last time too. This will be so helpful!! I brought my small die-cut machine which was so helpful! I have the Stampin Up one that has 3.5” wide plates and also the sizzix Sidekick that has 2” wide plates. I brought the SU one because it is still small and gave me more options, but I really love the little sidekick. If you have dies that are small that machine is so compact and would be easy to bring. I keep it in my desk and use it whenever I have small dies to cut because my big machine is behind me. This is the exact one I have and you can get longer plates for it too: amzn.to/40vEN5d
      That one looks like it takes longer to ship so there’s a white one too. It’s a little more expensive but looks like it comes with more: amzn.to/3Cphe68
      And if you wanted to check out the SU one, here’s that link: www.stampinup.com/products/mini-stampin-cut-emboss-machine?demoid=2298508
      That’s awesome that you have friends who bring their Cricuts!! I know what you mean, would be nice to have your own, but it’s so hard to pack that!
      Have a blast at your retreat!

    I’ve been more of a photo first person as I’m new to scrapbooking and also trying to organise thousands of old photos so get inspired as I sort it. However I think paper first will also be more fun as I can prioritise my favourite papers too. Preparing kits really helps me as I’m a lone parent so getting time to scrapbook is limited. But I can easily do prep work like this for half an hour or so after my son is asleep, and then when I do get some childfree hours I can go straight to creating the layouts. I’ve just created a paper first kit tonight after seeing this video and it was fun to do.

    • @JaymaMalme
      @JaymaMalme  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It makes it so much easier to get things done when you pre-plan! Definitely a great thing to do while your son is asleep. When my kids napped I never felt like I wanted to get really into something, like a full layout, because you never know when they're going to wake up and I HATE getting my flow interrupted. LOL! But hopefully this gave you more time to scrapbook later and get right into it.
      Try it out with paper first but you can always go back to starting with photos. Every now and then if I have photos that really inspire me, I'll start with them and then choose paper. But I've just gotten used to choosing paper first I also have found it easier to scrapbook baby photos later because you're less likely to want to scrapbook EVERY single one. LOL. I am more selective when I do them now. Best of luck, Mama! You got this!

      It makes it so much easier to get things done when you pre-plan! That is wonderful that you can do that! I enjoy every part of the process too. I’m still enjoying it, just batching the planning part. Like I said, everyone’s brain works differently and you get to choose to scrapbook the way you enjoy it most. 😊

    What do you do if you aren’t very good at selecting which papers to use? Are there any hard and fast rules I should use?? Thank you sooo much for doing videos like this - now I n eyed to watch the photo printing collage one and get a new photo printer to begin.

      I don’t think there are really hard and fast rules, it depends on your photos and paper and embellishments and style. 🤣 But I try to talk thru my decisions in most of my process videos. Here are some videos I’ve done that go into more detail about selecting papers:

    Wow!!! This video is fantastic and I know I am going to go back and refer to it many times!!! I love the kit ideas but do you always only do a 2 page layout with kits? For example, if you find you have many many photos that you want to use, too many for a 2 pg. layout, do you go ahead and make your kit a 4 or 6 pg. layout? And if you do, do you do different layouts for each 2 pg. one or make them all the same? Would you use all the same papers and mix them up between these layouts or just go completely different for each one? When you scrapbooking and do kits or just page layouts, do you make these with a particular album in mind and start putting them in the album or just stack up a lot of finished layouts and worry about the album later? Also, how to you do your albums, by year or event or person??? Sorry so many questions but I’ve been out of scrapbooking for long time and really want to get back into it as I have tons of photos. Your video makes me think of stuff you did in it and then I have a question about it!

      @JaymaMalme  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great questions, Lisa! If I can help it, I try to keep a series of photos to no more than a 2-page layout. There are exceptions, like a big event or vacation, but most of the time I can get them to a 2-page layout. Sometimes I will collage photos to get more on a 4x6 print, or add flip flaps, or I have some page inserts that go between a layout that also help fit a lot more pages. They are called "Pocket Plus" and were from CTMH so they're retired now, but I'm really hoping Stampin Up will start carrying them. Here's a video with an example of an event where I had tons of photos I wanted to use and got them all on one double layout: th-cam.com/video/_gbdjFw86tw/w-d-xo.html I also tend to be pretty selective of what I print...I don't print everything.
      There are times when I went away for maybe a few days and have too many photos for a 2-page layout, but not enough for its own album. So in that case, I may do 2-3 layouts. I don't feel like I need to use all of the same papers and embellishments. But I'm sure there are people who do like to do that, so it's totally up to you and how you want to do it! I get bored if I do too many similar pages. LOL. I may use the same papers or colors but change it up quite a bit. Guess it just depends on my mood at the time. :)
      I do my scrapbooks by year, and I try to keep to one album per year but some of them spill over to 2 albums. I create a separate album for vacations so they don't take up a lot of space in the annual album. And l also don't scrapbook EVERYTHING. I scrapbook totally out of order so all of my albums are kind of a work-in-progress all the times, but that's just how I like to do it. Many people scrapbook chronologically and that's fine too...you will find your groove and what you prefer to do. I do tend to stack up my layouts quite high before I put them all away in their respective albums. haha! My vacation albums tend to be a smaller album than my annual ones, so they aren't as bulky. I also keep an album for each of my kids for school. I haven't done a ton in those albums, but I keep important school work and reports, and there's one double-page spread per grade, which includes their school photo and any photos I got from the teacher or maybe the class photo. Beyond that, I personally don't do an album for each kit. I'll probably do a "highlight" album for each of them when they graduate HS but I figure they're not going to want to take 15 albums with them when they move out, so their memories will stay with me and they can come look at them whenever they want. It's hard enough to get our family memories documented, I can't imagine doing it 3 times (for me and each of my kids). Digital scrapbooking would be a great solution for this and I know many people who love digital scrapboooking, but I just love the touch and feel of paper and playing with stamps and dies and all the fun techniques.
      Hope that helps!

      It now requires a subscription to remove the watermark. Sorry! It didn’t have that when I got it. Here is a tutorial for using Canva and Project Life which are both totally free if you didn’t want any fees. They are both great I just prefer picframe since I have it. th-cam.com/video/tQxPv-J725k/w-d-xo.html
