Ok so my thoughts on Charles Bukowski: I’ve read his poetry and I definitely did not vibe with the misogyny, but I like his way of writing and I can’t tell you why, but reading his poems/ books make you feel a certain way. They made me, a raging feminist, feel a certain way. I also looked into his life and what kind of human he was... and well- he was something. Like full on alcoholic. Sad alcoholic, who lost a lot, loves sex and was insomniac. Of course he wrote poetry.
His poem blue bird is one of my favorites, do check it out. And I agree with your comments but mostly because I read 'ham on rye' and 'post office' before this poetry book. His perspective becomes a little more clear once his life is understood. Still don't agree with a lot his povs though.
His work is definitely filled with misogyny, but yeah I agree it makes you feel a certain type of way. Maybe a sense of feeling sorry for him? I think that's how I felt. I read about his life, his struggles, his addictions, and to me it makes sense why he was the way he was. To me, it made sense why he hated women and basically only used them for sex. He was a broken person who wrote some pretty cool poetry.
@@aves11111 I think they might mean, in a way, that he just seems very relaxed in certain situations when really he knows he's in complete control, like he's getting exactly what he wants out of whatever situation he's in, or at least that's how I interpreted it

the female characters were not terrible- the way he describes them and only links them to memories of the mm sexually is the terrible part. the women themselves are the backbone of the story and quite frankly the best part. their characters are so complex and are the only reason he finds sense in his world, but the way he sees them sometimes as mere sexual objects is the terrible part.
@@marikajasmine99 I think I’m going to have to disgree. The female charaters are (in my opinion) only there to further the main characters emotional growth and character development. @@uncarley yeah definitely. I agree with that. I think a lot of Bukowski’s work is self-aware, though, and not definitively from his perspective. The narrative is quite unclear in a few of the more problematic-themed poems, but I think Harry might read them as more of a ‘warning’ of toxic masculinity/ the effects of the patriarchy, than to relate to and take inspiration from. Like you said, however, there’s no way to know without Harry commenting. I appreciate your replies and hope you have a lovely day/ evening. And I loved the video :)
I get your perspective on Murakamis writing but the story does follow the guy rather than the girl. So it is his perspective on her illness. I guess it was intentional just a theory I'm not entirely sure though.
He literally mentions several times in the story that he doesn't completely understand why she goes through those problems or how he can even help her, he still tries regardless which was honestly pretty nice considering how many works don't really go into how confusing and drawn out these situations can be (and how no matter how much you try sometimes things just end badly)
I know I fail as a feminist when I say that Bukowski is one of my all-time faves. His insight on society is bleak, but I can't help but love it. Sorry!
Ive read charles Poetry and as a Girl/women its really hard to read sometimes without getting a little mad... his was of Wtiting and using words is pretty good though! I still dont like him and dont wanna seperate the Art from the artist soooo i dont wanna support him Ort his Art
I had to write a report on a poetry book in college. I waited till three days before it was due to start it. I went to the library and picked up Charles Bukowski's book On Love, because I liked the cover. It was giving me sweet Rom-Com vibes. I was horrified to find out it was the perverted ramblings of a dirty old man. It was too late to read something else, so I had to write a 5 page paper on it.
Hey ! Loved the vid, your comments are actually very clever and you made me laugh :)) Just wanna say that I've never seen Harry say he enjoyed that one collection of poems from Bukowski ? I've done a lot of research on his literary influences because I liked his music a lot and so far the best insight I could get on it was Jack Edward's video "The poetry that inspired Harry Style's music", so If you want to give it a try I would suggest you go for it because I found it fascinating :)) (btw he also read books harry recommended and also made a very interesting video about it) . Anyway thanks for your recs!

heyyy i'm Brazilian! i just discovered your channel and i'm really happy about it. you are sarcastic in an incredible way omg this video made my day! ps: my ex boyfriend gave me a portrait with a poem by bukowski and that was reason enough for me to kick his ass :)
@@ColombianThunder It's incredibly well written but as she mentioned, it felt like every female character was merely a sexual object. They all felt like manic pixie dream girls to me. Also the steamy scenes made me SO uncomfortable, murakami definitely has something with ears. It's one of those books where not much happens but i wouldn't say it's super entertaining either and to me so many plot points just don't make sense. If i were to dive into specifics there would be too many spoilers but i just didn't enjoy it.
I loveeeed your perspectives so much! Bukowski was a total assholeeee, I completely agree. And if you liked Norwegian Wood, Murakami has some other gems too! You should totally get them and maybe rate them as well💚
@@uncarley well so far for novels it’s definitely 1Q84 and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. As in for short stories Man-Eating Cats it’s sooo captivating and unique. I haven’t read his whole work so probably my opinion will change
I’m so grateful that you did this booklist review. The married feminist in me is cringing at HS’ booklist, but it kinda explains his first two albums a bit more. What did he say about them, having sex and feeling sad? I’ve not read the Magical Thinking one, so I’ll pick that title today because even though you’re giving it 3/5, I’m on board. Excited. I will not forgive the Niall and Lou slander, but you chose to voluntarily suffer through Bukowski, so you’ve punished yourself a plenty. And, yes, the fans of Bukowski, some of his shit’s great writing, and some of it is frustrating AF- kind of like living in a patriarchal society somewhere pretty with year-round summer like in California. Keep up the good work you do for humanity. Your commitment to 1D and self abuse is admirable. Your final thought made me choke a little and snort coffee out of my nose. I kind of assume Harry is the sad woman with mental illness, but let’s go with your version instead.
GIRL... I read Tokio Blues by Murakami a while ago and although it wasn't too bad the fact that the dude ALSO fucked every woman in the story annoyed the shit out of me and made me hate it. Been trying to give Murakami another chance but with what you said about Norwegian Wood... idk about that anymore.
You should’ve read in watermelon sugar, love is a dog from hell, the course of love, love is a mixtape, the wind up bird chronicle, siddhartha by hermann hesse this ones too
And in case you did not he likes more than just bukowski's books for what i've seen he uses some lines of his works for intro on his songs and his shows so yeah...
and yes, i do love female authors, a lot of my favourite books are written by females, and a lot are written by men... both genders are fantastic writers, although being of a different gender or race doesn’t actually affect writing, our mindsets are not different... and yes white men can write poetry as well, if you read bukowskis memoir Ham on Rye you will understand the time period he was living in, the society he was living in and also a lot of where his anger and frustration came from, yes he was white, but he was a german american during world war 2, he was bullied and thrown in the dirt for decades, spent years in therapy for his severe body and face acne... his father was very abusive to him as well, if he missed a grain of grass mowing the lawn he would get whipped by his fathers belt... and yes, he even admitted he was an alcoholic, chain smoking son of a bitch... but he was an excellent author
Spot on. He gets labelled a lot. Yes, he’s not perfect, but people should try to understand him at least a bit. He’s still bad, but that’s not everything about him.
He’s human, and he wrote with sincere honesty. I think this is so fucking important, now more than ever. I can’t help but admire someone who was so authentically themselves and refused to censor. Even when they pen stuff i don’t personally agree with.
Personally i do like some of Bukowskis poems and think hes talented at writing but you can’t say it’s fine the way he treats, thinks, or writes about women especially surrounding sexual assault because he had a troubled background/life. The commentary of “he was in a different time/lived in a different society’ doesn’t make it okay or cancel it out at all. you can appreciate his work and poems but you have to be aware of the person he was and not try and wipe away his actions because of it or reduce them to a product of his time or background.
also your background definitely effects your writing. Your experience and the lense that you view and experience the world through effects the way you write about it. you can tell when women’s pain is written by a man vs by a women as one of those people know first hand what it’s like and that’s evident in the way they write about it.
@@daisy3087 oh i definitely agree! i’m not trying to justify anything bad he or anyone else ever did, i’m just stating facts that may have not been known, that can at least give a better understanding of his character. He was a misogynist, yes, he was a raging alcoholic, yes, the amount he smoked could have killed a hundred men, he was depressed and stated he hated people, yes again, but he developed new writing, a new perspective in literature, they were things you could imagine. not roses are red and violets are blue, but more the sky is overrated and the world is an ugly place, only we can make it better if we were better. that’s more something he would say and it’s something people can relate too. He was honest. and i admire that about him, he was an author, not a rapist, he was a dirty, alcoholic eventual old man but was so insightful and intelligent. I’m only here to balance a scale of perception, not outweigh it.
I'm so late to this but you nailed the way men write sad women. Norwegian wood was such a beautiful book but I was kinda meh about the way he wrote the females

I listened to a murakami book and it assaulted my ears with horniness
GIRL! I LOVED YOUR VIDEO!!! the way you put ur observations, opinions, and thoughts is amazing.
I get your perspective on Murakamis writing but the story does follow the guy rather than the girl. So it is his perspective on her illness. I guess it was intentional just a theory I'm not entirely sure though.
nah thats definitely the point, the main character is kinda an unreliable narrator, he doesnt get the full picture of the situations he witnesses
He literally mentions several times in the story that he doesn't completely understand why she goes through those problems or how he can even help her, he still tries regardless which was honestly pretty nice considering how many works don't really go into how confusing and drawn out these situations can be (and how no matter how much you try sometimes things just end badly)
Weird question- Did you end up booking the hand soap commercial?
i'm absolutely loving the wattpad energy at the start of the video
I love how you talk about things , ur so intellectual and hilarious x
I had to stop reading 1Q84 from Murakami because of the way he described women. I just couldn’t take it after 300 pages
i can’t believe i just discovered your channel...amazing content keep up the good work
your humour is unreal you’re so funny
oh I can't believe you unpublished your celebrity book club videos, they were my comfort vids 💔
"which is really why women read" 😂 😂 😂 THE SARCASM!!!
Honestly male writers are the worst, idk why they feel the need to talk about women’s bodies’ all the timeeee
No one gona talk about urs, dnt worry.
Just discovered your channel, and I'm really happy that you are a directoner too... so yeah you gained a new sub haha
get a fringe i think it would suit you
omg don't validate me, i'll do it
@@uncarley I second this, do it girl! 💖
@@uncarley do ittt!!
I found your channel, I’m currently binging it, and you’re so funny aaaaaaaaa luv ur content
I know I fail as a feminist when I say that Bukowski is one of my all-time faves. His insight on society is bleak, but I can't help but love it. Sorry!
I feel this so hard. He’s horrible but fascinating and i love his writing even tho my soul says i shouldnt!
sameee
@@elizabethgiardin2296 exactly!! U can admire someone’s artistry without liking them as a person
also hes dead so its easy to separate the art from the artist since hes not gaining anything from it anymore yk
the scenario at the beginning at the video made me realize i’ve never had an original thought in my life
omg i love your observations and sense of humor!
Have you read The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides? That one really stuck with me and sorta reminds me of Norwegian Wood
Your night voice is everything, babe
I’m literally obsessed with your channel.
after bingeing your channel for a while, love to see the origin story of your hatred of bukowski lol
omg thanks for including going back for the camera, i always think about it
Hey ! Loved the vid, your comments are actually very clever and you made me laugh :))
Just wanna say that I've never seen Harry say he enjoyed that one collection of poems from Bukowski ? I've done a lot of research on his literary influences because I liked his music a lot and so far the best insight I could get on it was Jack Edward's video "The poetry that inspired Harry Style's music", so If you want to give it a try I would suggest you go for it because I found it fascinating :)) (btw he also read books harry recommended and also made a very interesting video about it) . Anyway thanks for your recs!
yes! it's important to note that harry actually likes "love is like a dog from hell" from bukowski the best i think?? i just got whatever bukowski collection my library had!! thank you!
heyyy i'm Brazilian! i just discovered your channel and i'm really happy about it.
you are sarcastic in an incredible way omg this video made my day!
ps: my ex boyfriend gave me a portrait with a poem by bukowski and that was reason enough for me to kick his ass :)
Hey, I'm also Brazilian and just discovered this channel because of my insane searching for Harry Styles haha nice to meet you btw! ;)
I'm also brazilian!! Wtf?? Are we just a BR fandom now? I'm here for it.
omg WHAT A RED FLAG!! you can do better
reunião de br's querendo saber mais sobre o harry and i'm here for it
unrelated but i love the hedgehog and plant!
I think we're all collectively grieving the fact that Harry likes that poetry collection from Bukowski. He needs to explain himself.
i've always said that if a guy told me he actually enjoyed norwegian wood i would run😭 i'm so sad it's one of harry's favorites
Haven't read it. What's wrong with it?
its a book good lord
@@ColombianThunder It's incredibly well written but as she mentioned, it felt like every female character was merely a sexual object. They all felt like manic pixie dream girls to me. Also the steamy scenes made me SO uncomfortable, murakami definitely has something with ears. It's one of those books where not much happens but i wouldn't say it's super entertaining either and to me so many plot points just don't make sense. If i were to dive into specifics there would be too many spoilers but i just didn't enjoy it.
"It is so bad I wanna give you a zero. but thats not possible so I give you a one" LITERALLY
I was talking to my dad about poets and he told he that he likes reading Charles Bakowski. Red flag red flag
I loveeeed your perspectives so much! Bukowski was a total assholeeee, I completely agree. And if you liked Norwegian Wood, Murakami has some other gems too! You should totally get them and maybe rate them as well💚
what is your fave mukakami?
@@uncarley well so far for novels it’s definitely 1Q84 and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. As in for short stories Man-Eating Cats it’s sooo captivating and unique. I haven’t read his whole work so probably my opinion will change
poetry is for anyone. my favourite poem is Invictus by William Ernest Henely
Not related with the content whatsoever, but I'm obsessed with your bedroom, omg
I am loving the Walt Whitman support
this is so nostalgic to me now
✨Drop the fanfic already✨
I loved Norwegian Wood but the manic pixie dream trope for every women was just.... a little annoying haha
Can you do a 'read with me' video where you film yourself reading? I can't visit my reading buddy because of covid and trying to find a solution :)
Watching her talking about her opinion on Norwegian wood making me read it again
what is his taste- like im concerned
tell me why i can smell those library books? i haven't been in a library in forever but im missing that crisp library book smell
and yes, i do love female authors, a lot of my favourite books are written by females, and a lot are written by men... both genders are fantastic writers, although being of a different gender or race doesn’t actually affect writing, our mindsets are not different... and yes white men can write poetry as well, if you read bukowskis memoir Ham on Rye you will understand the time period he was living in, the society he was living in and also a lot of where his anger and frustration came from, yes he was white, but he was a german american during world war 2, he was bullied and thrown in the dirt for decades, spent years in therapy for his severe body and face acne... his father was very abusive to him as well, if he missed a grain of grass mowing the lawn he would get whipped by his fathers belt... and yes, he even admitted he was an alcoholic, chain smoking son of a bitch... but he was an excellent author
I’m only here to balance a scale of perception, not outweigh it.
this video made me pause to laugh like 12 times. i would kill for you to meet harry just to discuss and roast him on his choices
His other poetry book recommendations are amazing.
I'm so late to this but you nailed the way men write sad women. Norwegian wood was such a beautiful book but I was kinda meh about the way he wrote the females
Hi I'm also late to this video but I'm like 90% done with Norwegian Wood and I fucking haaaaaate it and I hate being in the minority when it comes to book opinions, it makes me feel so stupid. I like Murakami's writing I think but boy I'm obviously missing something when it comes to this book because all I get from it is toxic relationship and a weird romanticization of suicide. Anyways sorry to lay that on you because you did NOT ask for that but here I am 😂
@@kate-ne no i completely agree with you! i'm glad you pointed out the romanticization of suicide - the whole book he kinda romanticized women struggling with serious mental health issues.
@@LarryS378 yeah I finished the book last night and seriously wanted to scream in those last 10 pages. 🪦
Me trying to laugh about the Louis and Niall's joke (cause I like her humor) but not cause I love them to much 🥺🥺
I'll just listen to their music to, yk, recharge my love for them
Styles is a real one for having Norwegian Wood as one of his favs
god im so glad i found ur channel i jus luv ur vibe
“Three out of the two books”😂😂😂❤️
Honestly harry styles reading list is a big red flag ,,, I don't really feel. Comfy
