I keep forgetting about the ability to hold down the spacebar to move the cursor. I am very impressed with the dictation abilities of the iPhone. And I can now do a shortcut and get the address with line breaks. Thank you!
How could you not mention the quick input of characters like the comma, question mark and exclamation point and other symbols on the second keyboard layer. Swipe from the "123" key to the desired character, and the keyboard itself returns to the first letter layer.
Hi! It's also possible to go between letters by tapping and holding the place where you want to go on the screen, it magnifies the word to be more accurate
It was a lot better with 3D Touch. Pushing it would move the cursor, pushing harder entered text selection and it was very accurate. I can’t remember if there was a third level of pressure. Now you have to use two fingers to do the same thing and it doesn’t work very well
Thank you Proper! I always learn so much! That’s why I’m a member of your channel so I can get a copy of your program in the pdf form. You’re making my “technology life” so much easier.
Three finger tap on the keyboard to undo or redo. It takes a bit of practice to get it right, but super helpful for when I mistakenly delete a chunk of text.
I used to use Swype before I switched to iPhone. One of the features it had was to swipe my finger above the keyboard to capitalize a letter. I really miss this when I switched to iPhone. Is there a similar feature in iPhone?
Coming from Android the keyboard is a nightmare... Even the 3rd party keyboards. Gboard and swiftkey are simply missing incredibly useful functions, such as an immediate comma to the left of the spacebar, or long press symbols immediately on the current keyboard... Apple should be the leaders of functionality with the cost, not the followers!
The horizontal keyboard used to have buttons to nudge the cursor position. Those were extremely useful. There was no good reason to remove those, and now there is useless extra margin space.
When typing an abbreviation and ending it with a period, how do you force the next letter to be lower case instead of it being automatically capitalized?
Thank you! I did find your information very useful and I’ll be back to check on your tech data frequently because I honestly learned new and helpful information. Thanks again!
My personal best tip to type much faster - simply turn off autocorrect. You may feel uncomfortable at first, but later you'll see the benefit. If you make a mistake, your iPhone won't correct the word to something completely different - just one delete press and all good. Also incredibly useful for non-native English speakers(like me), because your phone won't correct words you deliberately want to type in English pronunciation using non-Roman alphabet. I turned it off more than 5 years ago and I don't miss autocorrect at all.
I recently switched from Android to iOS and this keyboard is so annoying to me, a polyglot. The Google keyboard is able to recognize the language you're using and to adapt the suggestions. Meanwhile, on the iPhone I need to stop typing to change the keyboard first.
Wow. This was so helpful to a new iPhone user. Such a great clear, concise presentation that I'm pretty sure kept me from taking my new SE 3rd gen phone and dashing it against a brick wall and then stomping on it until it was completely and utterly destroyed and out of my life forever.
this spacebar thing is F**KING incredible! and I'm still learning the slidey method although sometimes I forget how to spell a word and my thumb is over the letters. Also I'm using dictation more
Thank you very much. Really helped. It was hard for me at first coming from Samsung for soo many years. I think I like the Iphone keyboard way better. Typing faster than I used to on Android and making less mistakes. The only think that I like from android keyboard is the customization all about it. Thank u. Keep up the good work.
Once again, another wonderful video. Thank you so much! I use swipe texting all the time, I just can't do the 2-thumb thing. The main rule for me after creating a text is to proof-read it before sending, as my phone almost always 'mis-interprets' what I meant to say at least once or twice.
Thanks for the great advice! I'll add one more. For longer typing sessions, consider getting a full-sized keyboard. Choose well, and you'll get a host of benefits. I'm delighted by my Matias Slim One. It's compact, lightweight and includes both a USB and Bluetooth UI, which lets you use it with two devices. Type via USB and you'll enter into one device. Hit the iPhone button, and it uses Bluetooth for the other. Matias intended the USB for a Mac and the BT for an iPhone, but you don't have to use it that way. The keyboard sips very little power, so you can use the USB cable with an iPhone or iPad via Apple's Lightning to USB camera adapter. (No error message about using too much power.) Then you can use the BT to talk with whatever you like, including an iPad. The keyboard also includes a string of keys across the top to adjust lighting, sound, etc. Unfortunately, the Matias Slim One is no longer available retail. You may be able to find an equivalent or get it used online.
Is there an easy way to add a date stamp, a timestamp, or even a date/time stamp as a shortcut? I find this handy when I am keeping monthly logs in the notes app but I always seem to type them in manually. Thanks!
@@kellzb3582 I’ll see if that works. In the old Palm Pilot days, I would write DTS and it would automatically inset a Date and Time stamp where the cursor was. Very handy if you take notes on calls you make throughout the month
Handy tips. I think most people know that if you press the 123 button and slide across on the iOS keyboard then you can select a number or character. Lift your finger and it goes back to letters. Very handy. One that I only only discovered today is that if I want to hide the keyboard, I press just above the keyboard and slide down. Obvious now that I think about it and I've done it without realising at times. I mostly use voice input these days.
After new ios update always when i try to write special letters i hold letter it shows special letters but it immediately disappear and it starts moving cursor. How do i fix it?
The problem with swipe text is the three suggestions made as you start to type a long word. If you spot the word in the suggestions and swipe up to get it it often changes just as you get there. I presume because the swipe up to get at it crosses other characters so the suggestion updates. Either that or it is just messing with me! Then it seems a faff to correct it. Any tips would be useful. The other issue is that it is not supported on my iPad so doesn't work at all. Unless there is a setting I'm missing. Finally why does the auto correction always default to May when I need May. There it did it again. I may have not meant the month. Can autocorrect lists be modified on iOS or iPadOS?
To use swipe typing on the iPad, you have to first switch to the mini keyboard (which floats rather than being fixed across the bottom). Press and hold the button on the far right of bottom row (has a keyboard symbol on it). Select “Floating” from the menu that appears. You can swipe type on that keyboard (if it’s turned on in Settings > General > Keyboard > Slide on Floating Keyboard to Type). To get the normal keyboard back, drag the floating keyboard to the bottom of the screen and hold for a beat; it should expand and lock in place.
Thank you for the great tips! It makes life with an iPhone easier. However, still hate the iPhone keyboard - auto prediction really work in a strange way. If you entered a word with a typo, no problem, you can find the correct prediction in the center and it will be autocorrected while you’re typing. But if you entered everything correctly, the correct word is on the right while there’s some bullshit in the center (usually a longer word starting with the word you need).
Just found your channel when searching for these types of tips. The thing that I dont understand is that when filling out online forms sometimes I get a keyboard that has all the characters to add email addresses etc on the one screen, but the default apple keyboard requires you to continually swap between letters and numbers. Am I missing something simple here to get around this problem ?
If the phone is smart, it should adapt to my behavior instead of making me adapt my behavior to the phone. If I have to watch a video before being able to "type correctly", which is one of the most basic uses of those phones, something is really off.
Stock keyboard is so pathetic it doesn’t have basic things like 1)Number rows 2)Clipboard(which is a must in this busy world) 3)Basic customisation I guess
I struggle with one thing the most - rejecting predictive text or auto-correction, I'm not sure what that's called. When I type in other languages than English, there is no suggested words along the way at the top of my keyboard. I don't know how to reject correction. Would appreciate if someone told me how to do this.
Hello, I believe I know what you are trying to do but I’m not positive. Hopefully this helps. My suggestion would be to go to: Settings> General> Keyboard. Once you are there click “Keyboards” at the top then “Add New Keyboard.”A list of so many different languages will appear so simply select which language you want. (You can also add as many different keyboards for different languages as you want. Once you’ve added the different language keyboards you want and you are ready to type simply hold the circular globe on the bottom left of the keyboard and select the language you want. As you begin to type in a different language you should begin to see predictive/suggested words in that language appear above the keyboard for you to select. *Adding a new language keyboard will also resolve your problem if everything getting auto corrected to English or showing you that the word is spelled wrong. I hope this helps
Why is it when I click it doesn’t move the cursor there permanently to let me insert characters but instead moves it all over the place and back to the end of the sentence then the highlight word
To be honest one of the most annoying in my iPhone is typing. The built-in keyboard could be very good, but: no comma in the main keyboard, for special characters there are always one long row instead of two smaller rows. Although the keyboard apps don't provide me all of the special characters I frequently use. So I have two options: use the dumb basic keyboard or type without those extra characters and comma on the main screen... Oh, and seriously: no number row in the main screen! Why???? In those days when the phones are soo big, there are no place for an extra row in order to type faster?
I would like to be able to control the sensitivity of the keyboard. I have a benign essential tremor. A lot of times while typing I will glance away and have a bunch of a letter I didn’t want. I am able to control the sensitivity on another computer mouse, but no one has known how to help me. I’m sure as I age it will probably be worse and technology will really have passed me by. 💙
text replacement is a great feature. there used to be a pc version of this which was great but no longer there. Such a useful feature. I still hate the, no punctuation on the screen with the letters!! and Swiftkey is amazing in Android. ( my proffered keyboard) please catch up IOS
Droid keyboard has a period and comma without having to switch to the numbers punctuation keyboard. Having to change keyboard for a comma or period every time really stinks. (Unless I'm just missing something.) So far, I am really not liking my change from droids to this Iphone 15.
You might have to enable it (wasn't aware until now that this was a setting, otherwise I'd have included it in the video). Go to Settings, General, Keyboards, ensure that Slide to Type is enabled.
Like many others I do not own or have access to a PC or Mac. This means your Community Posts are not available to those of us who use 😊iPhones and iPads for all our IT activities …
Hi Tony - I literally just double-checked (as I was shocked by your statement) on my iPhone and iPad, and I can confirm that they are all available under the Membership tab of my channel. You might find downloading the TH-cam app for your iPhone/iPad the easiest way to access, but you 100% can access everything on the devices you've mentioned.
@@ProperHonestTech Interesting - I do subscribe to your .pdf option but still get the unavailable message when I try to open a CP. Perhaps I need to have another look at the actual implementation you mention - thanks
@@ProperHonestTech The Membership tab on my iPad (iPadOS 16.1) does show me being a member (eight days) but if I go to the Community tab next to it I just get that message saying the device does not support Community Posts. This is the same with a couple of other YT channels that I follow and subscribe to. Initially I assumed these Community Posts were limited to Patreons but further research reveals that is not the case - could it be an iPadOS issue as my iPhone SE does have listings under that Community tab?
Sorry, you're referring to community posts specifically (my mistake). Yes, this is a long-term compatibility issue on the iPad/iPhone apps for YT. However, I rarely post on the community tab, and all PDFs are available in the Membership tab (which you can access). So, whilst annoying, you're not missing out on much from me.
@@ProperHonestTech Think I have cracked it! Community Posts in You Tube are NOT available for viewing in iPadOS. However if you go to TH-cam via your browser and select the Show Mobile Website (available through the Aa sub menu) the Community Tab will display the full channel content INCLUDING Community Posts) - another 45 wasted minutes … thank you Apple!
These iPhone tricks illustrate an important principle sometimes called "eating you own cat food." Quite a few products are designed by people who don't use them, so they come with a host of irritations. Not so iPhones and iPads. Those who design and create their features use them constantly. The hassles that you and I suffer are hassles that they suffer, so they find solutions.
I tried to use the iPhone keyboard for the last year and a half two years but I got tired. I mean I get English language but in other languages, especially in Bulgarian just doesn’t have any swipe gestures which just sucks and let me not start at the AutoCorrect thing in my native languagejust doesn’t work
Thing is between the lag and the random autocorrects that are no where near what you meant to say basically make it one of the worst keyboards ever since the update
This could've been a 3 minute video by just recommending Swype and speech to text. Once iPhone got the ability to use Gboard and swipe... It finally caught up to Android after.... Years.
There’s three ways to Undo plus Redo, two not mentioned: 1. Double tap with three fingers will bring up a context menu with Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, and Paste 2. **The fastest way** is swiping with three fingers to the left for Undo and three fingers to the right for Redo.
@@ProperHonestTech Yes, you did. I had already made the comment during the video and couldn’t delete it. Sorry. I love your videos. They are informative and delivered at a good pace. 😃
I just thought that I would watch this vidio to see how the sighted part of the world lives. It was really interesting. Still, if you really want to type really quickly on an iPhone, Then learn braille. You use 6 finggers. You can do it in the dark. You don't even need to watch the screen. It’s called braille screen input.
Iphone 13 and i spend half the time correcting my spelling. It sucks. All these fancy features and power yet they cant make a keyboard that makes sense. Not.to.mention.when.this.happens.
Getting rid of 3D Touch was just insulting. Why?? Tapping and holding takes way longer than simply force tapping to move the cursor. The delay sounds insignificant, but really bothers me.
I cannot believe how bad the iPhone is for typing or dictation. iPhone 15 and it’s basically not even usable. My Pixel 7 typing and dictation is so easy, decades ahead of Apple.
I am pretty obsessed with keyboards on phones in general and I am team Gboard (and team Android) right now. I think it is fundamentally different, yet similar how you type on both systems and currently this is what is holding me back from using an iPhone. I need to mention that I am Hungarian and we have special characters like Á É Ö Ü etc. These are placed on the right side, right of L P and so. So when I am typing an Á I am not looking for this on the left long pressing A but on the right side (where ENTER is). Autocorrection of course helps a lot but when you don't even start the word with the proper letter, autocorrect will not predict what you about to type. So Gboard without this special layout is kinda useless on an iPhone. I hope it's clear what I was trying to explain. I know it's a nuance but typing is a common and everyday thing.

I like Gboard. Their version for Samsung is great. The one for Apple is different and it sucks
Anyone know why when i try to type the word “and “ The keyboard constantly tries to correct it to “AB’s”
text replacement is a great feature. there used to be a pc version of this which was great but no longer there. Such a useful feature. I still hate the, no punctuation on the screen with the letters!! and Swiftkey is amazing in Android. ( my proffered keyboard) please catch up IOS
preferred :) IOS keyboard haha
Droid keyboard has a period and comma without having to switch to the numbers punctuation keyboard. Having to change keyboard for a comma or period every time really stinks. (Unless I'm just missing something.) So far, I am really not liking my change from droids to this Iphone 15.
I’ve been using the swipe feature on my phones for 12 years.
In dictation how can I get “.” Or “,”?
Just tried swipe typing and it does not work. I'm on a 12 pro with the latest software update.
You might have to enable it (wasn't aware until now that this was a setting, otherwise I'd have included it in the video). Go to Settings, General, Keyboards, ensure that Slide to Type is enabled.
@@ProperHonestTech cool thanks
Why does my space bar say mellanslag instead of space
Hey how are you doing?😊
People need to put more pressure on the screen as well. I need that is the main issue, people press on the screen lightly.
Years.
I love my iPhone a lot !!!
good for you
3:50 useful
Still very annoying that swiping and word prediction is limited to a few languages only. Wish Apple would catch up with Swift or Gboard here.
There’s three ways to Undo plus Redo, two not mentioned:
1. Double tap with three fingers will bring up a context menu with Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, and Paste
2. **The fastest way** is swiping with three fingers to the left for Undo and three fingers to the right for Redo.
@@iangarrison9516 thanks man!!
I ate tipong !!
I’ve heard turning keyboard haptics on drains battery…
I mention that in the video.
@@ProperHonestTech Yes, you did. I had already made the comment during the video and couldn’t delete it. Sorry.
I love your videos. They are informative and delivered at a good pace. 😃
@@arashy no worries, glad you’re enjoying the content 👍🏻
I just thought that I would watch this vidio to see how the sighted part of the world lives. It was really interesting. Still, if you really want to type really quickly on an iPhone, Then learn braille. You use 6 finggers. You can do it in the dark. You don't even need to watch the screen. It’s called braille screen input.
LOL…it’s 2023 and we are talking about swipe to type…
It would be a lot easier if apple would just allow an option to have a numbers row. Plain and simple. This has been rub with iOS for years.
First time using iphone from an android. I still love the keyboard of androids but I hope apple will improve this eventually.
Landscape mode……!
also he forgot to mention the "100% offline mode" costs $24.99
All I do is turn the phone sideways then it full screen
I know it's a nuance but typing is a common and everyday thing.
that is why we need automatic multi languages recognition combined with dictating.
The iPhone keyboard sucks, period! It's high time Apple made it like Android!
