Who’s ready for a super saloon vs superbike drag race?!
Mat’s lining up in the BMW M5 CS, and he’s facing off against the BMW M1000RR! So does a car really face a chance against a bike? Let’s take a look…
Starting with the M5 CS, it’s powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can put down 635hp and 750Nm of torque. It weighs in at 1,825kg (less than the standard M5), and it costs an eye-watering £141,000!
Next up we have the bike! With a 999cc inline four-cylinder engine, it can produce 212hp. It weighs just 192kg (not including the rider!) and it costs a whole lot less than the M5 CS, at just £35,000.
The bike is SO powerful, so does the M5 CS really stand a chance? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

The M5 CS is really amazing. You get a 5 seater family car that can keep up with Super cars. That's what you call engineering at its best.
It's £180k . It better be amazing.

It's also the price of a supercar but without the frills. I own a BMW car and a S1000RR and wonder who in their right mind would spend 140k+ on an M5? And as much as it pains me to say it, the engineering if often found lacking as they regularly have serious (read very expensive) reliability issues. I love BMW but think they've lost their collective minds pricing a admittedly fantastic saloon at that price.
The 6th gear roll was so impressive. This blew my mind when I got my first supersport bike. In my small car on a medium speed road that begins to incline, I need to downshift and keep revs up just to maintain speed. On the bike you can chill in 6th gear and still accelerate while climbing, on half a throttle too hahah.
Yes, you can be lazy on a super bike if you want to - was riding my s1000r on country roads yesterday, with limited overtaking places and half the time I could not be arsed dropping out of 6th to get around a string of cars. BMW knows how to build a tractable 1000cc engine with an epic top end of you ever want to go and play.
If there are some teens watching me tale off on my S1000RR M Mackage, I take off in second and change to 3rd gear at 120mph.
Even if every Carwow guests all have really good vibes, you just gotta love Chris and his positive energy, you can see that he's here to have good fun and he does enjoy it to the fullest. Thank you Carwow for the insane amount of quality content and thank you Matt 😁😁

Power to weight ratio is not the be all end all though. It’s one factor. A vehicle with better PWR does not always mean it will win.
@@Estiiwell that is definetely true. But the everyday reality in traffic is, that the bike is always quicker. You need very little space to overtake, simply because the bike is so small. No matter how quick the car is, you jus cannot keep up, if there is opposite lane traffic.
A skilled biker in all of these races is what sets Carwow apart from other simliar tubers.
Yeah wait till you see him on his own bike. People forgetting he's riding bikes he's not used to and still gets them going just about as fast as someone who owns them and knows how to get them off the line. My current bike I've only been to santa pod twice, when I just not long got it my fastest was 10.3 something after 5 runs, the last time out I was in the late 9s by the 2nd run. Fastest 9.89sec done on the 5th pass.

@@neutral_face5268 The Turbo S does 10.1 to 10.3 all day every day. The bike is much more sketchy to launch consistently. So I would say the Turbo S has him 9 out of 10 times on the dig. Which is more than impressive for a stock car out of the showroom floor. It's actually NUTS.
Honestly Carwow does it best. Daily uploads, variety of content, drag races, reviews, challenges, events etc. High quality videos packed with information and last but definitely not least, a great editor.

The never ending challenge between Bike and sportcar. When i was young , i never beleive that a car can beat a bike. After that i have understood the effect of the size of the tires and the aerodynamic loading on Formula cars. On a track race (ring) the bike is not able to follow the formula one . The main reason is that the Formula is faster in bend with 500 kg of aerodynamic load . Thank you MAT for this "difficult" drag race.

@@oseinbabajide8943 well the newer BMWs are more unreliable than British Leyland cars were. They are the worst I've ever seen in 4 decades. B58 especially is a disgraceful engine, melts everything around it before either throwing a chain or inhaling it's own oil filter or it's abysmal Plasma Arc plated cylinder wall breaks up at the top 1" portion. You'd need to be off yer head to tune one they last about 3 weeks on a stage 1
This is just a great display of physics. 400 less hp and only about 87 ft/lbs of torque in the bike, but due mainly to being so much damn lighter, it's gonna win almost every time.
Every time I see that M5 CS, I’m stunned. What an amazing car, and to me it is definitely in the top 3 for most gorgeous BMW’s made in recent history

The bike can do a 0-60mph in ~2.5s but its always holding back in lower gears to avoid looping and really only gets full power over 50mph which is why these bikes always seem to keep getting stronger.

There's a simple math motorist should do before messing with a motorcycle: divide horsepower by weight. One comes to the conclusion that the motorcycle has about 3 times as much horsepower per kilogram as the car and saves a humiliation 😉

Cars have really come on in the past ten years or so. Superbikes, and lightweight cars like Caterhams, used to win these sorts of tests easily. The E39 M5 was a similar weight, 1700kg, but had only 400bhp! It was launched at the same time as the first Yamaha R1, which was massively faster. In that year too we had the Caterham R500 with 500bhp/tonne - I suspect this latest M5, and certainly the 911 Turbo, would beat that too.
Couldn't agree more. 10 years ago most bikes would kill these types of cars but now you need hyperbikes to beat these cars and its all in the launch. Its great to see

It's incredibly difficult to achieve the gains that would see the motorbikes go much quicker without throwing turbos or superchargers at them.
I'm not suggesting that production motorbikes have plateaued, but they aren't far away.
E39 was overweight af, e34 540i was like 150kg less, had V8 and was overall better car

A prime example of the difference between cars and bikes. You have to literally dump thousands into a car so that it can even stand a chance of keeping up with superbikes all the while sacrificing reliability. When you can just buy a 1000cc 250hp superbike off the showroom floor with a power to weight ratio of 1:1 not to mention older bikes that are also insane witha few bolt on cheap mods 🤣 Car drivers will never understand that bikes are superior and always will be 👍
