  • There is a new language learning hack that is becoming popular in the language learning community. The idea is to learn 625 words in your target language. Each set of words is broken up into categories that are supposed to be particularly useful for language learners. So in todays video I’m going to teach you the Welsh versions of each word in the second section, which is all about Transport.
Here are the links for the pronunciation video:

Thank you. That was brilliant. You are such a good teacher. I am going to get a note book and start working through all your lessons. I love the hints and visual ideas you give. I watched your Tenby video and now I can’t get the phrase “my pal the wal (wall) out my head” 😂

Diolch yn fawr! I knew most of these words from my other Welsh learning tools but this video really helped me with the correct pronunciation of several of them. I'm looking forward to the next one in this series.

Hi Teri. Glad the videos are helping. The next one should be out soon. I had already recorded Part 3 but I’ve had to re-record the video (using different recording software this time) as there were glitches in the picture like in the Easter video. I’m starting the editing this afternoon. Fingers crossed this time the picture will be ok. 🤞

So, I looked in your description and I can't seem to find the link to the video that talks about rolling your r's! Is it a patreon exclusive?

I have a question about truck. In America, trucks are a type of car, eg Chevy (pick-up) truck. I thought lorries were our semis. So, does this change anything?

I’m now starting to think Duolingo is lying to me. They make beic sound more like beak. 😫

Duolingo is quite good but not all the pronunciations are perfect.

    • @garmit61

I think it differs based on your exposure. It sounds more like bake to me on DL. But I know from attempts at Spanish and German using phrase books that the phonetics don’t make sense to me sometimes. I’m assuming they’re written for American English speakers rather than UK English speakers. As there are lots of different accents and dialects all over Britain I’d imagine it’s possible we hear differently as well as speak differently. However, I’d bet if you put someone from Llanelli, someone from Caernarfon and someone from Aberystwyth in this video there’d be some different Welsh pronunciations yma hefyd

@@LearnWelshPodcast I would go further, many of the pronunciations are unintelligible/incorrect because they are computer generated. For example, on Duolingo the diphthong "au" is always pronounced as the English "eye" even when it's a plural marker which is quite incorrect. Duolingo knows there is a problem and advises its users not to complain as they can't do anything to rectify it! The pronunciation on Memrise is better (but not as good as you).

Welsh could have easily invented a decent word for train. But when the train was invented it was very strong English imperialism. Welsh was viewed as something to get rid of..... Welsh cultural power was very poor and still is..... This means Welsh language creation is low

Hmm, I think by that stage they simply adopted it, it was pretty late in the colonisation. I think it more likely that a languages first use the word that most people identify it as, that why there are word of Latin origin in welsh. But these are celtivised latin words rather then latinised celitic words.
If anything if they resented it they would use a Welsh phrase. There are example like that in other cultures. Smoke daemon or soemthign like that.
