Apple pulled off what Microsoft has tried and failed to do twice now. Imagine if the OG Surface or Pro X had launched with this level of performance and compatibility.
I'm not sure if Microsoft really failed. It feels more like they didn't even really try in the first place. It is much harder to make an architectural transition in Windows than it is on Macs due to the different markets and the different policies of Apple and Microsoft. But that still doesn't excuse the poor hardware of the Surface Pro X. That thing is slow. Really slow. It's not even a new chip. SQ1 and SQ2 are just a rebranded Snapdragon 865. Apple went all out on this transition and it really shows. They made a completely new and custom chip that's specifically designed for this exact purpose. Microsoft's attempt feels more like a side project. They announce a whole bunch of stuff and are like "Oh, yes btw we also made this. Maybe you like it" It's really obvious that the Surface Pro X was not a top priority project. Personally, I think it's sad. What the Windows market needs is a new Intel or AMD grade OEM that makes ARM CPUs and sells them to whoever wants to build a Windows computer. I think Microsoft could be this company, but for some reason they just don't do it. Microsoft could never make a proprietary CPU the way Apple can do it. Only Apple makes Macs. But not only Microsoft makes Windows computers. So they'd have to give those chips to other manufacturers in order for it to have some sort of chance. If they keep those chips for themselves, they'll fail since almost nobody will get to experience them as 99% of the market still runs on x86.
Not to excuse their laptops but they barely invested that much R&D into their products. Microsoft is going pretty much all in on Cloud Computing and maybe android in the future.

The main difference between Microsoft and Apple is that Apple kept all the crappy ARM Macs in the basement until TSMC achieved a 5nm manufacturing process at scale. Microsoft releases crappy Surface devices to the public. Microsoft does this to spur the OEMs on to do better, but OEMs don't always care.
I got one of these bad boys, and I can't believe it this is like switching from windows to mac back in 2010 when Macs were super fast on snow leopard. Feels like that all over again absolutely stunning.

just picked this thing up with the student discount for $899! Incredible machine! It's my first mac ever and it was hard to make the switch, but no windows based laptop in the price range even remotely touched this thing. It checked every single box for me whereas most windows options checked only a few unless I spent $1500. For the first time in my life, the mac was the cheaper option!

As a person that took the plunge for an 8gb 512gb MBP, I gotta say....its worth it. I came from a $2800 15 inch Macbook Pro 2016. 4 years was enough to wait. I unplug at 6am, at 10 pm i'm at 60% battery. I'm a software analyst, and use it to remote into my Lenovo work laptop. I love Ableton, and plugins and layering is fine, no hiccups. I love how fast it is, but still am waiting for full optimization. As for would I regret not waiting for next year? Technology is a non stop bullet train. Its up to you when you jump on.

I recently lost my early 2020 MacBook Air (we think it got stolen), and got a surface laptop 3 as a replacement, as I used it I realized I didn’t like windows in a laptop format, I decided to stick with it until the internal Wi-Fi module stopped functioning, and so I returned it. As I said, noticed I love mac os in a laptop format, and love windows in a desktop format (Gaming PC). Just ordered the M1 MacBook Pro and couldn’t be more excited to take it with me on the go.
I was a mac user for 10 years. Finally giving up on them after this reveal. Had enough of the price, zero customization. Stoked to be building an incredibly powerful machine, and learning da vinci resolve.

Fun fact: all apple chips since A12 has dedicated hardware accelerators for direct binary translation for Rosetta 2, which is the reason why Rosetta translation leads to only a 20% performance penalty, rather than possibly 90% penalty if those HW blocks weren’t there.
I've had mine for almost a month now and I can truly speak up for it. It's a crazy computer and I really think it's worth getting and I'd fully recommend it to anyone.
When these reviews talk about "Professionals", why not include Programmers in the conversation? Is there a downside to using this processor for development? Any compatibility issues? These content creators can literally use an iPad Pro. Programmers neeeeeed to use a PC.
I mean... you can’t run Logic or MainStage on an iPad. Or Ableton, or like the whole Adobe suite other than photoshop. That makes the iPad Pro a pretty hard sell. I think they probably focus on content creators because those people who want Logic Pro or Final Cut are typically the people who are going to be buying Macs as professionals. Historically most Macs have had pretty bad to okay price to performance ratio which is only really offset in terms of value by all the good creative software available + education discounts. May not be true now, but it was for a long time and I think it’s pretty embedded in how Macs are perceived culturally. That being said you’re still 100 percent right. Programmers should be included in the conversation. I’ve seen a handful of those reviews in my recs before and I’ll reply to this comment if I see them again.
The only thing I have heard about programmers because I am an IT student myself, is that tensorflow doesn't work (only if you run it on Google Collab works) and the Android Emulator does not work cause this CPU doesnt support vt-x. So yeah.. If you use these and want a laptop now, dont buy this one. Maybe if you arent in a rush.. They will fix this on future update or the next chip (probably M2). P.S. I think that I saw somewhere they said it is hella difficult to install gcc too. But this will be fixed on an update I think.
Got a I3 model for my girlfriend for Christmas. She likes editing videos so I was a bit worried about preformance than this happened and it saved the day I reserved one and am headed to Best Buy to pick it up now and I’m so thankful this happened in time to switch em up and give her one that is gonna blow away any video editing she’s gonna be doing
there is a misconception that RISC instruction set of arm architecture is inherently slow but the two fastest computers of the world are build on RISC architecture by IBM power chips.
Too bad for you. My puppy crushes the M1. Okay I do have dual Epyc CPU's (64 cores total, 128 threads) which most cannot afford and the possibility to put two more which is on my to do list for the next upgrade. It replaces my 8 core Intel Cedar Mill (Pentium 4 HTT @3.6 GHz) mini-supercomputer which was a very nice rig until it died 2 years ago. The cooling failed and the motherboard burned out completely. 12 years of continuous service ain't bad though. I do believe if it were still alive it would have beaten the M1 in raw performance as well. Before that I had a SGI Onyx rackmount supercomputer with 24 CPU's (R4400). The Onyx is still working and not for sale. Not to say the M1 is not interesting as it most definitely is but not for what I do as this processor will stay closed and can only run Apple software. I love Unix and Linux systems but that for me is the hammer to not even look into it in any serious way. I will stick with AMD Epyc line for now.
@@ForOdinAndAsgard of course the EPYC line beats the M1, EPYC target is for SERVERS, the M1 is meant to compete with Ryzen and Core, plus the current M1 chips are in laptops, so we haven’t seen their performance in desktops
When I watch this, I feel if this technology takes off, you will have to depend on a single company for your RAM, CPU, GPU. Imagine a day with no Intel, AMD, NVidia, Qualcomm, etc, because it's handled by the one chip. I'm not sure I can promote that. I WANT CHOICE! Imagine the only upgrade to a laptop/desktop is a new computer.
@@yerriper8780 Scary is how I feel. Intel/AMD/Qualcomm have to do their version. At that point, why buy an outdated and slower modular system like we have now. Then, what happens to Gigabyte, MSI, Crucial, Micron, Kingston. They either get bought by a chipmaker, or have no use, because instead of GPU/RAM upgrades, you can only upgrade the whole computer. You can no longer buy a minimal system, then upgrade it when you save up. Modular systems will no longer make sense. Maybe good, maybe bad, we'll see.

Experiencing it is the fastest way to convince yourself. lol I owned an i9 16" MBP and I bought a MBA M1 just to try out. The next day I put my 16" up for sale and kept the Air.
Stock Traders, Android and Windows developers, and most programmers that need to run emulators, and need specific libraries cant use this laptop. If you see a day-trader, they need more than 3 monitors. Also, Game Engines are currently not working properly and are going to need a lot of work to run correctly on these machines. There are use-cases where these laptops are not useful. I know they are base-models and not professional, but the 16 inch and 13 with M1X are still going to have the same problem
I am so torn. On the one hand, Apple have made an incredible leap, massively increasing both sides of an opposing scale - both performance and power efficiency. Something that seemed impossible. They also make beautiful hardware that have very little quality control issues (besides the butterfly keyboard fiasco). On the other hand, I need Windows and Linux support. Apple have locked down their computers so much that they have become very powerful, efficient appliances. No tinkering here. Sadly, being someone in the cyber security space, it would lead to me looking for another vender when I need to replace my computer. I would probably heavily recommend the Mac with M1 to my friends and family, but for my personal use, I will look elsewhere.

However, this is still an alpha release and not ideal for daily use. My concern had more to do with client backups and snapshots. Modern Macs run ARM while most of the world still runs x86. A snapshot of a compromised machine has a high 90% chance of being x86. This does not currently run on M-series Mac as far as I am aware. To virtualise and emulate/translate simultaneously is too much for current hardware.

All the reviewers seem to live in a parallel universe where computers are not fast enough, which is quite amazing considering the fact that one can pretty much use Haswell for everything but the 1% of the most demanding tasks today and it will be blazingly fast. Battery life, on the other hand, is a real benefit.
I've had to take in my macbook for a service once in 6 years of ownership(screen coating wearing off), and it was covered under the extended warranty. Not one time during the process did I think "man, I wish I could've taken this to the random computer repair place down the road". Apple makes the process very convenient.

It's on you actually. The older Macs are more stable and have less bugs and issues on Big Sur. You bought a beta product. It will be better than all Macs next year but isn't there yet, apart from in benchmarks

These M1 Macs are outstanding, no doubt. However, I’m going to hold off a bit because I would really like a 16-inch version and hopefully (fingers crossed), they finally put a 1080p cameras on those. The second one seems a bit far off, I know...
I recently lost my early 2020 MacBook Air (we think it got stolen), and got a surface laptop 3 as a replacement, as I used it I realized I didn’t like windows in a laptop format, I decided to stick with it until the internal Wi-Fi module stopped functioning, and so I returned it. As I said, noticed I love mac os in a laptop format, and love windows in a desktop format (Gaming PC). Just ordered the M1 MacBook Pro and couldn’t be more excited to take it with me on the go.
I was a mac user for 10 years. Finally giving up on them after this reveal. Had enough of the price, zero customization. Stoked to be building an incredibly powerful machine, and learning da vinci resolve.

Watching this on the MacBook Air M1 and after using it for around 4 hours I completely agree. It's the perfect laptop for everyday work.
Fun fact: all apple chips since A12 has dedicated hardware accelerators for direct binary translation for Rosetta 2, which is the reason why Rosetta translation leads to only a 20% performance penalty, rather than possibly 90% penalty if those HW blocks weren’t there.

When these reviews talk about "Professionals", why not include Programmers in the conversation? Is there a downside to using this processor for development? Any compatibility issues? These content creators can literally use an iPad Pro. Programmers neeeeeed to use a PC.
I mean... you can’t run Logic or MainStage on an iPad. Or Ableton, or like the whole Adobe suite other than photoshop. That makes the iPad Pro a pretty hard sell.
I think they probably focus on content creators because those people who want Logic Pro or Final Cut are typically the people who are going to be buying Macs as professionals. Historically most Macs have had pretty bad to okay price to performance ratio which is only really offset in terms of value by all the good creative software available + education discounts.
May not be true now, but it was for a long time and I think it’s pretty embedded in how Macs are perceived culturally.
That being said you’re still 100 percent right. Programmers should be included in the conversation. I’ve seen a handful of those reviews in my recs before and I’ll reply to this comment if I see them again.
Check out Dave2D’s review. He compared the compile times and they are as good as on the 2.5k 2020 16” MacBook Pro.
The only thing I have heard about programmers because I am an IT student myself, is that tensorflow doesn't work (only if you run it on Google Collab works) and the Android Emulator does not work cause this CPU doesnt support vt-x. So yeah.. If you use these and want a laptop now, dont buy this one. Maybe if you arent in a rush.. They will fix this on future update or the next chip (probably M2).
P.S. I think that I saw somewhere they said it is hella difficult to install gcc too. But this will be fixed on an update I think.

Too bad for you. My puppy crushes the M1. Okay I do have dual Epyc CPU's (64 cores total, 128 threads) which most cannot afford and the possibility to put two more which is on my to do list for the next upgrade. It replaces my 8 core Intel Cedar Mill (Pentium 4 HTT @3.6 GHz) mini-supercomputer which was a very nice rig until it died 2 years ago. The cooling failed and the motherboard burned out completely. 12 years of continuous service ain't bad though. I do believe if it were still alive it would have beaten the M1 in raw performance as well. Before that I had a SGI Onyx rackmount supercomputer with 24 CPU's (R4400). The Onyx is still working and not for sale. Not to say the M1 is not interesting as it most definitely is but not for what I do as this processor will stay closed and can only run Apple software. I love Unix and Linux systems but that for me is the hammer to not even look into it in any serious way. I will stick with AMD Epyc line for now.

When I watch this, I feel if this technology takes off, you will have to depend on a single company for your RAM, CPU, GPU. Imagine a day with no Intel, AMD, NVidia, Qualcomm, etc, because it's handled by the one chip. I'm not sure I can promote that. I WANT CHOICE! Imagine the only upgrade to a laptop/desktop is a new computer.

@@yerriper8780 Scary is how I feel. Intel/AMD/Qualcomm have to do their version. At that point, why buy an outdated and slower modular system like we have now. Then, what happens to Gigabyte, MSI, Crucial, Micron, Kingston. They either get bought by a chipmaker, or have no use, because instead of GPU/RAM upgrades, you can only upgrade the whole computer. You can no longer buy a minimal system, then upgrade it when you save up. Modular systems will no longer make sense. Maybe good, maybe bad, we'll see.

@@yerriper8780 I feel this runs parallel to what's happening to the car industry, where everything is becoming electronic and old school mechanic shops are going away and you almost have to take your car back to the manufacturer for repairs/upgrades. But then, there are the hobbyist who keep the DIY car industry afloat who like to build antiquated cars. The hope is the DIY computer industry does the same.
Experiencing it is the fastest way to convince yourself. lol I owned an i9 16" MBP and I bought a MBA M1 just to try out. The next day I put my 16" up for sale and kept the Air.
Stock Traders, Android and Windows developers, and most programmers that need to run emulators, and need specific libraries cant use this laptop. If you see a day-trader, they need more than 3 monitors. Also, Game Engines are currently not working properly and are going to need a lot of work to run correctly on these machines. There are use-cases where these laptops are not useful. I know they are base-models and not professional, but the 16 inch and 13 with M1X are still going to have the same problem
From someone who uses a laptop with another monitor hooked up for more room, this Mac Book Air sounds very much like a very good work station

I am so torn. On the one hand, Apple have made an incredible leap, massively increasing both sides of an opposing scale - both performance and power efficiency. Something that seemed impossible. They also make beautiful hardware that have very little quality control issues (besides the butterfly keyboard fiasco). On the other hand, I need Windows and Linux support. Apple have locked down their computers so much that they have become very powerful, efficient appliances. No tinkering here.
Sadly, being someone in the cyber security space, it would lead to me looking for another vender when I need to replace my computer. I would probably heavily recommend the Mac with M1 to my friends and family, but for my personal use, I will look elsewhere.
You can run Linux on the Apple Silicon Macs. Apple doesn't restrict what operating system you can boot.

My concern had more to do with client backups and snapshots. Modern Macs run ARM while most of the world still runs x86. A snapshot of a compromised machine has a high 90% chance of being x86. This does not currently run on M-series Mac as far as I am aware. To virtualise and emulate/translate simultaneously is too much for current hardware.
Wait because the M1 chip is so efficient, does this mean that Apple can fit a Radeon Pro 6800m (Radeon Rx 6800 mobile version) because of more available power and heating it can use/do??
All the reviewers seem to live in a parallel universe where computers are not fast enough, which is quite amazing considering the fact that one can pretty much use Haswell for everything but the 1% of the most demanding tasks today and it will be blazingly fast. Battery life, on the other hand, is a real benefit.

I've had to take in my macbook for a service once in 6 years of ownership(screen coating wearing off), and it was covered under the extended warranty. Not one time during the process did I think "man, I wish I could've taken this to the random computer repair place down the road". Apple makes the process very convenient.

It's on you actually. The older Macs are more stable and have less bugs and issues on Big Sur. You bought a beta product. It will be better than all Macs next year but isn't there yet, apart from in benchmarks
