3:24 You got 17gigs of extra memory on an 8gb machine, it's actually insane. Apple silicon does a great job, even 4 year old laptop still have quite enough power for the most people.

I've been working with a M1 air since launch, and it keeps rocking with my workflow, editing my youtube videos, photos and everyday tasks, I'll change for a newer model maybe next year for a 16gb version because it's my main bottleneck by now, 4k editing (with colorgrading) and photoshop work have some hiccups that adds up over time, but other than that, I really love my m1 air because it's by miles my best investment so far, the thing cost me 1k and made me 200k+ without a sweat (and without a fan haha)
    Great video my man!

I got a new one from Walmart for $599. Back in April.
i use it more than my M3 Pro MacBook Pro!
Excellent media consumption and for basic admin (notion, website updates, emails, TH-cam, light Canva work, etc.)
I use it as a rugged throw around laptop and for travel on small airlines.
This thing is amazing when you focus on tasks one at a time. Once you start editing and have 100 tabs open- that’s when it slows down (barely).
My M3 Pro MBP is my go to with heavy use (20% of my work), but for the rest this thing is incredible

@@Jaysoo7 great! I wish I ordered the silver. my m3 pro is awesome and definitely an upgrade, but the m1 air is way better for my “on the move” work style. I don’t feel guilty throwing it around or stuffing it in my bag.

      Enjoy the M1 air!

  • @hacorn96
    @hacorn96 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

M1 base model user for 3+ yrs. primarily use figma, arc and 2-3 other apps with passive usage.
It’s not enough at all. Heavier figma files struggle a lot. Add another app to the mix and all the snappiness goes down the toilet. Connect a 4k monitor with figma actively using or active multitasking and it heats up like mad.
Lack of active cooling and RAM are active bottlenecks. When buying, I didn’t anticipate my workflow getting heavier, nor did the overly optimistic TH-cam reviews indicated I’d be facing issues with my workflow.
All in all, here’s my 3-point advice.
If 3 years is all you’re looking for from a base model and you know how to work around the limits, then it’s go for the LATEST base model. Not the old M1, it will be obsolete in a year or two. M3 or M4, whatever’s available in latest Mac Air.
Otherwise if you’re going to be a heavy user and want no problems for min 3 yrs, go for a beefier machine. My rule of thumb - whatever base spec apple provides for RAM and CPU, go one model higher.
If budget is limiting you, then go for what you can afford (obviously). Refurbished options are cool. Macbooks have the best longevity, stability and overall resale value. Or you can even try windows arm laptops, they’re getting better. Just don’t go for a MacBook that’s not Apple silicon.

So many people criticizing the M1 and nobody supporting the M1 Air are saying that the M1 Air was the last MacBook with the wedge shaped design. That was the last time this laptop had a signature MacBook look. After that the boxy design is just like any other laptop. I myself bought an M1 Air in late 2023 because I love the design. I want to have it in collection as this timeless design goes out of market. Then it will be a rarity. Many people may start searching the M1 Air at that point in time. And as for performance, the general work that I do doesn’t need any more power than the base M1 Air offers.

One thing you didn't mention is that when you go into swap it will write and read constantly from the SSD. The SSD has a limited amount of write cycles when that limit is reached the laptop is bricked and since the SSD is soldered on you can't just replace it. In order to replace those you will need to have a "donor" macbook SSD, which is not cheap and has used limit as well.

For the college student, agree a refurbished (or if you can swing it for a apple certified refurbished) is well worth it. For those of us with a bit more expendable income, I would 100% recommend just skipping the m1 and just finding an m1 pro or some form of a Macbook Pro, way better long term investment and still easily able to compete with the latest variants (plus the increase on RAM and onboard storage inherent with the Pro's is just worth it too).

it's the perfect laptop for students imo. it's what they call an ol reliable. it can do anything you realistically need on a day-to-day basis and it lasts the entire day. the refurbished deals are killer too you just get so much for what you pay. if you end up selling it, you can still get a decent deal because macs hold value compared to other laptops, especially the m-series macs.

I bought a higher spec 13" Intel MacBook Pro in 2020 - then like 3 weeks later, they launched the first M1 Macs. I kept that 13" thinking it would be fine and didn't want to be all "consumerist" about it. Yeah, I really wish I'd returned/sold that thing ASAP and just bought an M1 Air or Pro. I could still be using it now without issue. The M1s have held up crazy well. My Intel version is officially the worst laptop I've ever owned - entirely because of the garbage CPU in it (a battery guzzling space heater), to the point that I sold it last year.

Can you get it? Yes. Should you get it? No. The base M3 is selling at $899, with better spec and 4 more years of software update. You can get an Intel mac if you want to but why handicap yourself if you can stretch $200 more for an objectively better machine?

    Hey Andrez, another great video!
Wow, this is amazing! I'm currently using an M1 MacBook Air 256GB as my main computer/laptop for work and it's still going strong. It's actually faster than my work desktop, which is an old Core i5 8th gen with dual monitors and 16GB of RAM.
If you're thinking about getting an M1 MacBook Air, I highly recommend it. You won't regret it. But if you can afford it, I'd suggest getting the latest model. It'll last you even longer than you expect.
