    If you are working full time, and have a decent tracked history of poker results, then its much easier to analyse if you should go pro. These are the things I would take into consideration first, however. Poker provides, no security, no holidays, no insurance, no sick leave etc. So you will need to be earning much more than your normal full time job, imo to make it worthwhile. Personally, Id recommend 2x what you earn with your full time job. Also, and this is the thing most people dont realise...is that Your poker bankroll IS NOT your life bankroll. They are two different things, and should never cross over. You pay rent, food, bills etc with your life bankroll, NOT your poker bankroll. DO NOT, drink alcohol or do drugs whilst playing poker...like ever. Ive seen way too many talented players lose everything and fall into huge makeup due to this. Bankroll management doesnt really need to be said, but saying it anyway. and lastly.....the moment playing poker professionally turns into a chore, or you only really get negative feelings and emotions out of it. QUIT. ...and finally, I laugh at most people who say they are professional tournament poker players. SO YOU STILL WANT TO PLAY PROFESSIONALLY?

    It the first rule in this video that makes poker particularly dangerous, I think. People can be on a devastating losing streak, at that point where they need to stop gambling, but they have convinced themselves that what theyre experiencing is a perfectly normal part of poker. Its no big deal. I saw one guy one youtube, lost his house and his girlfriend during a "bad streak." He justified it all by saying that its part of being a poker player. He thought that his family just werent being supportive. Obviously, that's ridiculous, his family was upset because he gambled all their money away and was destroying his entire life. But he was too deep to see it, too deep to tell the difference between a "bad streak" and an out of control gambling addiction.

      It’s all about ROI. Pick a career salary. Teacher, 50k. If you have an ROI of 20% you will have to risk 250k to make that 50. 20% is a ridiculous ROI, most people are nowhere near that. Best case scenario is you catch lightening in a bottle early on for a big score. Like Brian Hasting did with Isisldurr . Hastings took him for 4,000,000 and started a coffee franchise. That’s sharp. Most players also have multiple degen tendencies in other areas as well. Whores, booze, drugs, sports-book, table games, no money management, whatever. Cash games can be a great PT job for teachers and people with flexible schedules. Becoming a good 2/5 player will keep you from painting houses or waiting tables after school, on the weekends and during breaks. But never give up the paycheck and bennies. One broken leg or health issue can cook your whole roll.

    • @canadianoddy8504
      @canadianoddy8504 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaypeters5224 Poker is a game of skill but that skill only gives you the "opportunity" to run deep. If your AK or your AA don't hold up when the five cards come out then you are done, I don't care who you are or what your skills are. That's what happened to me at a few world series. These bingo chimps constantly suck out on my AA. At the seniors event I was in the BB and a guy short on chips (but enough to cripple me) was on the button. It folded to him and he shoved. I looked down at AA. I called. He had K9off. He gets up and says "damn". The flop came - - K. He said "well maybe I got a chance". Everyone at the table snickered. The turn was a 9 and the river was K.
      This is what I am talking about when I say your cards must hold up or you are fkd.
      This is a constant irritant for me and it went on for years before I finally just said F it. I'm back playing now and some of my cards are holding up.
      By the way "the same players keep making the final table" is baloney. That's not true. They get TV time so it seems they are winning all the money but that is NOT true. Go to the wsop web site and look back at all the world series games. You will notice that NONE of these "same players" have made any recent final tables. Their names do come up in the $50,000 entry fee or larger games because nobody can afford that. But look at the smaller games with $5000 or even $10,000 entry fees. Who's winning those ? Nobody players that's who. The big name players are nowhere to be found. Mike Matasow said it best "It's pretty tough to fade 5000 players".
      Even the seniors event had 3000 players when I played.

    If you're a winning player you won't lose money long term. Poker isn't all that different than the stock market or other long term investing in that, yes, you will experience short term variance but can expect long-term profitability if you consistently make good decisions. I think many players just don't realize how long the "long term" is. If you're a 5bb/100 player then you can expect to be profitable after 100,000 hands 95% of the time; but to get to 100k hands would require over 1200 hours playing 6-max online. If you can play 4-6 tables at a time that gets shortened to 200-300 hours, which is still over a month of playing if you're treating it as a full-time, 40-hour-a-week job. Human brains suck at thinking on those time scales, so most players get frustrated by "bad runs" that can, indeed, last for weeks at a time.
    As for friends/family not accepting it, it really depends on your friends/family! My friends/family have known that's what I do for a living for almost two decades now and they accept it because they know I do well for myself.

      Well Jonathan that's completely wrong. You forgot to mention that all those numbers only work if.. you play optimal poker all the time! Your skills diminish and change day to day week to week month to month and year to year. There's a sweet spot where you might be able to make a profit for a few months or maybe even two or three years if you are one of the very exceptional people who managed to make a profit at a game that is not designed to be played for profit. There are too many unknown factors for you to say with any certainty what you can expect to earn over the long Haul. Theoretically sure, but people don't play according to Theory and if they do, it can only do so for a short period of time. Do some research on professional players who claim to make money from just playing poker alone and you will see that they do not. You will see that they must have income from other sources because they do not make a profit most of all the time

      @@wecvgb9 "You will see that they must have income from other sources" they do not make a profit most of all the time"
      It would be stupid to not try to create multiple streams of income, whether you play poker, work a day job, doesnt matter you want to invest, find more ways to make money.
      "they do not make a profit most of all the time" that is not exactly nor does it necessarily matter. As long as you are winning big, and losing small, thats profit.
      "you play optimal poker all the time! Your skills diminish and change day to day week to week month to month and year to year." This is only true if you do not try to improve everyday, if thats true then you are not a professional poker player. a professional studies the game a lot, and adapts accordingly.
      "Theoretically sure, but people don't play according to Theory and if they do, it can only do so for a short period of time" SAYS WHO? You? maybe because you might be undisciplined doesnt mean people who have a drive and encentive do.

      @jonathanhenderson9422 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wecvgb9 You don't have to play "optimal poker all the time," you only have to play poker that's better than your opponents. Your skills do not "diminish" unless you're mentally weak and let irrelevant things (like variance) negatively affect your decisions. Basically I (and every other pro that's been playing for decades) completely refute your nonsense that you can only win for a "few months or years." Poker has been my main source of income for almost two decades now.
      What do you mean poker "isn't designed to be played for profit?" It's a game of probabilistic decision making. If you make +EV decisions then you'll make profit the same way casinos do because the math is on your side. The way you figure out how much you make "over the long haul" is simply to keep track of how many hands you play and how much money you make; there's a ton of software that will do that if you play online. There's plenty of similar live play software for that too, but it calculates your winrate per hour instead of per 100 hands.
      I'm well aware that a lot of top pros have other income sources; that doesn't mean they're not long-term winning players. One problem for many top pros is finding games where they have an edge, because they don't have an edge against other top pros, or if they do it's miniscule. One challenge for players at all levels is finding games with weaker players. Do that and you're golden. Live it's pretty easy because recreational/casual players are very common live.

    Poker is pain? False, true and true. True for most players suck and don't have the backbone either. True in trourney poker. Not true for cash poker if you possess high poker IQ, and have solid EQ too. Sure losing hands can be hard sometimes, but its soon history and on to the next hand. Poker ain't pain for me.

      @@bradbaley5251 I was driven to read dozens of books. Sometimes reread like Harrington on tourney. I got all 3 books and read them all twice. I listened to 100s of podcasts. watched 100s of youtubes. You'll know you're better then most when the best players at your cash game bring you into their circle. You need to have great players as friends to talk over hands. I played over 10,000 tourneys online. Deep field. Probably 20,000 single table. Oh yeh, keep track of every dollar you win and lose. I play cash at Hollywood Park. Good luck.

    The hardest part of playing poker professionally is staying out of the pit

  • @RemedialRob
    @RemedialRob ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My least favorited people to play poker with are people who try to be "professional" or take the game super serious. It's a game. I want to "play" i.e. have fun. Not sit silently whilst staring at your dumb looking, hoodie and hat and sunglasses wearing ass while you listen to books on tape and act like you're bored and would rather be anywhere else.

  • @elyastoohey6621
    @elyastoohey6621 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The reality of poker is that 75% of it is boring. 15% is painful
    10% of it is pleasurable.
    However if you play correctly, the pleasurable part makes up for the rest.
    That being said, you can go months being lean just min cashing, busting, etc. it’s boring, cause you put 5 hours in just to min cash.
    But when you dub a tournament. Feels amazing.
    Remember, nobody wins them all. If you win even just 0.5% of the tournaments you enter, with an average field of 300 players. You’re doing well. If you can regularly final table 10% of your tournaments, you are doing very well.
    Once you get your final table numbers up, then you can focus on mastering how to dub and win those final tables.
    If you’re impatient, or looking to make money whilst having fun, do not try to be a poker pro. If you’ve got the brain to be a poker pro you honestly might as well go to uni, study finance and mathematics and try to work for a bank.
    You’ll likely make more money in the long run.
    But if you LOVE poker and can dedicate yourself to the discipline of patiently playing it and studying it. You probably will make less money than in banking, but you’ll be playing a game you love for a living.

    The truth is.. the best poker Pros are only profitable at poker for a short period of time, because of the variance built into the game. No one can maintain that level of mental discipline to capitalize on the tiny margins of profitability. That is why most experts estimate only 2% or fewer poker players ever make money at poker. Much less become professional players who earn their living from it. It is next to impossible to earn more than $30 per hour at the poker tables and that's if you play Perfect poker, against weak players, and don't have to spend very much money on expenses to play. In other words, in order to earn your living exclusively from playing poker everything has to be near perfect for just you. That is why hardly any of the pros you see on TV make most of their money from poker. They don't.

Now I'm much more humble and play the game the best I ever played and my money is showing. I recently played a tournament with 700 people and I busted out in 20th place. The clown played a trash hand and caught a miracle. Who knows, maybe if I won that hand I would have made the final table. 1st place prize money was $11,000. I'll keep grinding for it.
