wow this video comes at an interesting time for me. I'm moving to Austin, TX next month to take a shot at playing poker full time. My bankroll is 10k and I plan on spending around 1k of it on training sites/coaching. I'm planning on running it up in 1/2 and 1/3. Planning on taking shots and moving up to 2/5 when my bankroll hits the 15k mark. I haven't played poker in Texas area, but the games I play in New York I average around 12bb in 1/2 and have had some luck in 2/5 but with a small sample size. I hear the games in Texas play bigger/deeper, knowing this should I stay in 1/2 and 1/3 longer and do you think taking a shot at 2/5 with 15k is enough if the game plays deeper?
@@chriswilkins2291 Good luck on the move, Chris! I live in texas and I play at TCH Dallas regularly. I think your game plan for your 10k roll is spot on. 1/2 in Texas is damn near 2/5 in a casino. Texas games are better than anywhere in the country. Also, since you haven't played much 2/5, just buy in for $500 and get the feel for it. No need to buy in deep at the beginning.
@dth stk I've play live poker the past 4 years and I'm and played poker and have the 12bb/hr in 1/2 is over the last 500hr sample and I'm only 21 and have the luxury of not having a lot of responsibilities so I am willing to drop a year of my life to go for a career in poker. I already know what I'm going to do if poker doesn't work out, but I would rather take a shot at playing poker professionally then looking back in the future and see that I didn't even give it a shot. One thing I wish you’d talk about is how you deal with the regulations of being a pro. What I mean by that is things like how you get pre approved for an apartment without pay stubs, if the IRS wants a percentage of your annual earnings, do you just pay for life expenses with cash or do you make deposits in your bank and when they ask where all this cash comes from, you just tell them you’re a poker pro? Also, I’ve learned so much from your vlog over the past few months and I truly believe your content is the most beneficial of any of the vloggers for any aspiring poker player, regardless of the stakes they’re playing.
these things don't matter if you're playing less than 10/20. the bank isn't wondering where you get your deposits from if they're just a few thousand here or there. unless you're a goody two shoes who cares about being ethical to the system or something LOL but the system dgaf about you and if you're broke one day. Most poker pros are smart, logical people so they aren't giving their hard earned money to a corrupt, greedy system. i know exactly one full time pro under the 10/20 level who actually files taxes and he voted for hillary clinton so that tells you all you need to know about him.
I can help you with the apartment question as a realtor, One: most apartments only have a couple requirements. Don’t be a felon, don’t have terrible credit and make 3x monthly rent gross. If you can meet those requirements, all you have to do is provide bank statements showing cash deposits monthly equaling 3x or more monthly rent. The same thing goes for residential leases, most landlords really care about having a large savings and all that.
Loved your Poker bankroll wisdom. You started at the bottom, and through hard work, discipline, frugalness, and constantly improving your game you rose up through the ranks and succeeded!

Awesome to share with us how you got to where you are. I began watching this channel out of boredom one night and liked the video so much I liked and subscribed. This guy wears his heart on his sleeve and gives us great content. As far as the dropped chip goes , that’s what the dealer is for. He knew exactly what happened and before anyone could say anything the dealer pointed out the dropped chip. Nothing to feel bad about. Not like you bet out of turn or folded out of turn. Just shows good character that you felt bad and weren’t sure how to act on the situation.
Your insight to playing poker is absolutely brilliant. You’re always playing your opponents hand and strategize based on,”what’s he repping?”, and you talk your way through this process to your viewers. We are all better players bc we learn this from your videos. Most channels just highlight big winnings,big sessions and just don’t teach you how to be better at poker and explaining the different levels of thinking that’s required. I like how you put two separate categories for cash game poker. I give myself a requirement of 20+ buy-ins for cash games in general. 50+ if the player pool is hella tough. I am a 2/5 player. I have only played 5/10 online (6-max) a few times. 5/10 treated me well but I wasn't willing to play it regularly just to be safe. I am right now sticking to 2/5 hoping to move up to 5/10 eventually.
I like that you are this transparent about bankroll management. Two other poker vloggers did a live Q&A recently and wouldn't give serious answers to any of those types of questions.
Lex, I like your videos, but I would prefer that you modify your overlay to also list your position and continue to show the hand history in the display. For example, at 2:09 I don't know what your position is.

Maybe find footage of Brad/Andrew/Vibes sessions and put them in the title...and just flood with video from the past with their "cameos"...perhaps silly, but it seems to be working with many of your "peers"...seen their subs nearly triple in the past 30 days with all their TCH/Vegas vlogs that tied Brad/Andrew into them. I don't know....just want to see you get the recognition you deserve.

I appreciate this info. I’m a recreational player and only play 1/2 or 1/3 during my visits to Vegas. I now know my bankroll is more than adequate. I have realized that the game has changed and become tougher with all these solvers and range and but advantage concepts. I’m working hard to understand and cope with that

I would also like to hear your thoughts on 1) Cost of traveling [I would think that you need to add $2-3K per month if you are on the road]. 2) What rake is worth playing and what rake should you avoid. [My local casino takes $6 in rake + $1 for the bad beat with hardly any comps. This basically means that you can't grind the $1/$2 profitably]. 3) How to get better in order to move up in stakes [Books, vlogs, online course, poker coaching, message boards???].

Ofc, everyone is different. The stress of risking money, which is ultimately your food and rent, can impact folks differently. If you find you're avoiding playing for no good reason it might be b/c you don't want to *risk* your food/rent. Some folks may only need 6 months of living expenses saved up to avoid this stress while others need 2 years worth. Try to keep your job as long as possible and when you quit, make sure you have an easy path to get back into working.
Great advice on bankroll management. No other vloggers can do anything as such since they didn’t grind to be a pro but had rich families to support them *cough* Mariano, Rampage *cough*. Amazing insights from a true professional’s life Lex. Keep grinding!

Agreed it is thee most important thing doesn’t matter how much u win if u don’t manage your roll u will go broke it will happen !! Second most import thing is knowing when to leave. That kills so many players chances of making it. Knowing when enough is enough being greedy will always get u broke as well. People will never leave no matter how much they are up and eventually punts off their whole stack

Another video you could do is, what tools or software did you use to get gto. Everyone talks about how they started or how much they started with but rather what tools did you use to help.
Being properly bankrolled will definitely improve your chances at the poker table. Grinding out a living is not easy. I tried it for a few years. My bankroll went up and down. The hours and the travel eventually started to wear on me. I still play poker but I am not playing for a living anymore. I am a solid, above average player but the lifestyle was just not for me in the long term. Your videos are very realistic. Some people start out with very unrealistic expectations.

Thank you Lex for this post I’m a new poker player that wants to move up. I’m leaving my job in February 28 I will no longer work I will just be playing cards. I rarely lose at 1-2 never played 2-5 do to the fact I’m in Az they play spread limit yuk I know but I built a nice bankroll at 1-2 or as we say 2-200 here in the valley. I’ll be ready after my 45th birthday to play poker full time in March. Hope we can meet up one day and chat about bankroll stuff. Keep grinding my dude you are one of my favorite vloggers

I’ve been playing poker at prime social, 88 poker club and Texas card house. I had the best week playing 1 3 N.L won 13000 yes that’s right 13000 in a week. Great content and appreciate the discussion of logistics and things beyond hand analysis - one comment I would add is that it always felt like playing online was a “bigger” game than live - like an online 1/2 game presented the challenge of a live 2/5 game - so that time in lockdown grinding online 2/5 was probably good prep for the live 5/10 - was that your experience? I played full time for a year and a half. You are absolutely right about not being able to play 1/2 professionally. I had a 24 count streak of winning sessions at one point! It just was not enough to be completely comfortable! I was offered a job with full insurance benefits and couldn’t pass it up. I still weekend warrior and crush cash games. How do you manage health insurance and such from that roll?
Great as usual, I started playing for extra income tracking every session since March. Thanks for the information about the bankroll. I am married so to get the OK from my wife I am totally transparent with her she knows exactly my buy in my winnings, my losing every session, for me that works.

People really don't understand variance in this game, I went from a 6k bankroll playing 1/3 to a $20k bankroll playing 3/5 and then back down to $10k all in the span of 2 months.
Lex, what would the formula look like if your trying to retire from your day job. 1) what the minimum stakes to be playing before quitting 2) what assets and bankroll would be needed before going full time poker 3) minimum avg monthly/yearly win-rate required Btw, I sat with you recently no knowing who you are. I am very comfortable with 2/3 and playing 5 times a week I win 3 to 4 times. Should I give it a shot at 5/5? I usually walk in with about 4 buy-ins. Bankroll Management is probably the most important aspect of playing poker for a living, other than being a winning player of course. Great talk, what was your hourly win rate at each level Lex?
Agreed it is thee most important thing doesn’t matter how much u win if u don’t manage your roll u will go broke it will happen !! Second most import thing is knowing when to leave. That kills so many players chances of making it. Knowing when enough is enough being greedy will always get u broke as well. People will never leave no matter how much they are up and eventually punts off their whole stack
He is only making around 50/hr at 5/10 which seems low. I’ve got a 70+ hourly playing 1/2,1/3,2/5 in Texas.

Another video you could do is, what tools or software did you use to get gto. Everyone talks about how they started or how much they started with but rather what tools did you use to help.

Being properly bankrolled will definitely improve your chances at the poker table. Grinding out a living is not easy. I tried it for a few years. My bankroll went up and down. The hours and the travel eventually started to wear on me. I still play poker but I am not playing for a living anymore. I am a solid, above average player but the lifestyle was just not for me in the long term. Your videos are very realistic. Some people start out with very unrealistic expectations.

Thank you Lex for this post I’m a new poker player that wants to move up. I’m leaving my job in February 28 I will no longer work I will just be playing cards. I rarely lose at 1-2 never played 2-5 do to the fact I’m in Az they play spread limit yuk I know but I built a nice bankroll at 1-2 or as we say 2-200 here in the valley. I’ll be ready after my 45th birthday to play poker full time in March. Hope we can meet up one day and chat about bankroll stuff. Keep grinding my dude you are one of my favorite vloggers

Thank you for this information very helpful for me. I’m in Houston working a job for a while. I’m a rigging supervisor working in the refinery’s. I’ve been playing poker at prime social, 88 poker club and Texas card house. I had the best week playing 1 3 N.L won 13000 yes that’s right 13000 in a week. Great content and appreciate the discussion of logistics and things beyond hand analysis - one comment I would add is that it always felt like playing online was a “bigger” game than live - like an online 1/2 game presented the challenge of a live 2/5 game - so that time in lockdown grinding online 2/5 was probably good prep for the live 5/10 - was that your experience? Keep up the good work!
I think it’s quite the opposite actually. Live plays larger than online typically.
@@jeffrey27rj13 agree. not all online poker sites/apps have straddles and such. however, the online cash games tend to be a lot harder to beat.

I played full time for a year and a half. You are absolutely right about not being able to play 1/2 professionally. I had a 24 count streak of winning sessions at one point! It just was not enough to be completely comfortable! I was offered a job with full insurance benefits and couldn’t pass it up. I still weekend warrior and crush cash games. How do you manage health insurance and such from that roll?
Great as usual, I started playing for extra income tracking every session since March. Thanks for the information about the bankroll. I am married so to get the OK from my wife I am totally transparent with her she knows exactly my buy in my winnings, my losing every session, for me that works.

People really don't understand variance in this game, I went from a 6k bankroll playing 1/3 to a $20k bankroll playing 3/5 and then back down to $10k all in the span of 2 months.

Lex, what would the formula look like if your trying to retire from your day job.
1) what the minimum stakes to be playing before quitting
2) what assets and bankroll would be needed before going full time poker
3) minimum avg monthly/yearly win-rate required

Awesome video! Just what I was looking for. My question to you is when should someone move up to a bigger game? I have been playing 2/3 in Los Angeles area and the next bigger game is 5/5. I am very comfortable with 2/3 and playing 5 times a week I win 3 to 4 times. Should I give it a shot at 5/5? I usually walk in with about 4 buy-ins. If you could give me your thought I would very much appreciate it. Thans.
