I think I seen what he looks like. He's called The Pain right?
@@glenngriffon8032 I know nothing about spiderman except that he does the web stuff. And Big Wheel. Never forget Big Wheel

Sometimes when a scientist says oops it can mean they have caused a big problem.
oops
The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not "Eureka!" (I found it!) but "That's funny ..."
-- Isaac Asimov
But, you don't ever want to hear, "Oops."
Exactly. Great discoveries aren't heralded by jumping out of the bath and shouting, but by a slight tilt of the head to the side and a quiet "Huh..."
What does it mean when one says oof instead?
Tom Wes - It means they now have to clean up the vat full of gelatinous goo that they inadvertently knocked on the floor.
I seriously thought this was going to be about some kind of zombie bee. Like a cordyceps infected bee strain was going around infecting other hives.
Agreed. I thought it’d be about infected “zombie bees” leading to Colony Collapse. :/
Look into parasitoids if you're into that kind of thing.
Well, there’s some parasites that cause a sort of mental degradation in bees. It’s less “zombie” and more the bee loses any sense of purpose and just crawls along, flies in short bursts, runs in circles, or exhibits other sorts of strange behavior until finally dying.

As a beekeeper, I can tell you that the big problem with feral colonies is that honeybees nest in things like tree cavities. Even if you don’t see them, they might still see you.
That was a brave attempt at pronouncing Abelhas Assassinas. Bravo!
You can't blame Killer Bees for their aggressive bee-havior. They're just bee-ing themselves.
Bee yourself!
Oh honey, you have it all wrong.
I wonder if they will ever get to Polen
bees are dying out. it's a good thing we made them more aggressive if we want plants to be around on this earth reproducing through bee pollination.
I can J'h'ive with that statement😂😂
(JK sorry for my bad nonsense pun)
(I left an insane post about brainwashing hornets to track down and destroy the killer bees, somewhere in the comments if you're interested it's not funny though it's just odd and maybe a fun or scary idea idk)
I study in the college (and the same campus) that made the hybrid bee. Our mascot is a bee haha
AEHOO É NOIXX
Ah nice! Were you involved with it in any way?
No, it was way before I was even born. Plus, I'm a geology/paleontology major, not biology :)
geology is not science .
Groot Official but it is a great tool that helps science.
Oh stop with bee puns honey, everyone is buzzing to think of some, I don't know any, but hive five if you make a good one

These were so bad it stung.
Bee quiet if you’re gonna use puns aswell
I can bee that your joking beehavior is causing a buzz in the replys.
I lived in Green Valley, Arizona, where I knew three people whose pets were killed by these bees. It was sad and scary.
I thought this was gonna be about the Cordyceps fungus jumping species to bees.
_That’d_ be an episode.
Caden Stevens
What if that’s what Hive-O is?
Hmmm. Good idea for an episode..
Mafic please refrain from generalising the Cordyceps to infect bees. The further we get from The Last of Us, the better
Its not that big of a jump too, ants and bees are both hymenopterans are they not
For the record, Australia also has native bees. Most of them are stingless! One looks like a moth. Australian bees are pretty cool.
Note the happy face when Olivia says 'killer bees'.
All I could notice was that snot ring in her nose. Iewwwwww....
@@slukky are you joking? Or are you just dumb i really can’t tell
There was an opportunity to stop the northward progress of the bees, at one point, as they moved through a geographical 'bottleneck'. The plan was to introduce European queen larvae into the colonies, in hopes that they would breed out the Africanized DNA. But, unfortunately it turns out that the Africanized queens tend to emerge just a few days sooner and the first thing an emerging queen does is go around destroying all of the queen cups she can find in the hive.
woah that’s so interesting! i love how metal queen bees can be
You neglected to mention what really cemented the fear of Africanized bees in the public consciousness - the spate of killer bee disaster-oriented films in the 70s, culminating in Irwin Allen's theatrical production of Arthur Herzog's The Swarm in 1978 starring Michael Caine and Henry Fonda. There was also The Bees (John Saxon), The Savage Bees (Ben Johnson) and its sequel, Terror Out of the Sky (Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.), and Killer Bees (Kate Jackson).
The 70s was a terrible time for the average honeybee (and probably the common beekeeper).
Some good movies
I’ve got three hives of my own, and it’s interesting how each hive has distinct behavior. One of my newer hives in particular is agitated much easier than the other two (they’re always grumpy lol). My top bar hive bees are the calmest in the bunch and are much easier to work with. The third hive fluctuates in mood and varies day to day!
I’d make a Bee Movie joke, but the meme lasted long as an average bee’s lifespan
Haha...cheekily you _did_ make a bee movie joke!
Two years??
Multiple resurrections?
As a brazilian: that was a good pronunciation of "abelhas assassinas"
As the son of a beekeeper: that was accurate
As an allergic to bee sting: yep, they are dangerous
That scientist was so preoccupied with whether or not he could, he didn’t stop to think if he should.

Ah yes, the chickenpocalypse. That's going to ruffle some feathers.
Nah, you want to go with Troma Films original, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead.
Best of both worlds, and a better movie than it has any right to bee.

That will never happen. Chicken is way to tasty

A briefcase full of Bees should put a stop to this.
killer bees are the reason why flame-throwers arent illegal
Honey badger don't care.
word
Lmao I remember that video.. I actually had a shirt that said that 😆
Proper equipment for dealing with a killer bee hive is quite simple: 1) Bee-suit, 2) Flame thrower, 3) Fire Extinguisher.
For all that the internet jokes about such things, "Kill it with fire" is actually a correct response for dealing with nasty, stinging, winged hate-balls of all varieties.
There was that 1978 Irwin Allen movie, The Swarm, starring Michael Caine, Katharine Ross and Henri Fonda. Very entertaining and over the top. 😄
Sooo basically they made the calm bees into god damn hornets...
More of a reason for me to freak out every time i see any of them.
This history is old here, a trainee thought he would help the bees leave the hive easily and make it less hot by removing a screen at the hive entrance( that kept the queens inside the hive), after that the hive spread.
Wow
Nice hair bro. Keep rocking the fro
5:25 Olivia looked sooooo glad to be making those puns lmaoooo 😆😆
Of course she is. Puns are life, puns are love and so dam funny.
this scared me 35 years ago when i first heard about it in elementary school, luckily the bees seem to be taking their time working their way north
I love this girl. She seems so smart and cool, and cute. Sorry if that comes off as creepy, she's just someone I wish I knew IRL to chill with.
A zombee apocalypse would be worse than a zombie apocalypse
You actually said abelha assassina perfectly! Congratulations!
Could the reason for decrease in defensive nature be lack of ferocious predators over the course of many generations?
Makes sense. The most aggressive ones would actually do poorly because they'd attract too much attention from humans.
Learning about these bees in uni really freaked me out. Glad to hear the end of this video!
after learning more about these invasive bees... Im glad I live in the UK with the European honey bees who are super calm! :3
one was even chilled when I picked it up because it flew on to my hair and I was afraid of it being tangled, luckily I was able to let it crawl on to my hand so I can move it to somewhere safer than my hair lol
The invasion of killer bees should inspire the plot for a sequel of the Bee Movie.
How do you possibly ~accidentally~ release TWENTY-SIX QUEEN BEES?
Its a well publicised anecdote. Basically, there were mesh screens over the entrances to the hives. The gaps in those screens were just large enough to allow the worker bees to come and go, but small enough to keep the larger queens from escaping. One day, a trainee noticed the worker bees were struggling to fit through the mesh and were causing traffic. This seemed inefficient to the trainee, so he removed the mesh. And then probably went to tell the grown ups to receive his pat on the back. I don't think he got one
Oopsie poopsie just released twenty six hyper aggressive bees. Oh well can’t be too bad.
Thanks for giving this topic a go, Olivia !!! I've been wondering about these bees myself, lately!
Not the bees! Not the BEES! AAAHH!!!

I loved the pun! Please keep them coming.
Great job! Love working with bees. Killer, Bee Story😉😂sorry I couldn't resist. LOL
I'm Brazilian and you've pronounced "abelha assassina" very well.
Parabéns :-)
They are fine now and are friendlyer than normal bees.
“ honey badgers do what they want “ damn i forgot about that video 😂
Aaaaaaaaah..
3:06 ".. while dr. Kerr was away, a visiting scientist accidentally (?) let queens get away."
Interesting, I didn't even know "killer bees" wasn't a name for hornets XD
Bee hives are freaky to get rid of from front house porches.
Crate of beer + BB gun + exposed hive = great Saturday afternoon
0:37-0:41 OH S*%T.....someone got fired and thrown to a dungeon for this..
A very well produced video. 4 thumbs up.
I loved this one! You're informative and nice.
What... Is the airspeed velocity of an unladen honeybee?
krizmos74 what do you mean? A European or an African honeybee???
Huh? I... I don't know that.
How do you know so much about honeybees?
Corrible Hunt well... You have to know these things when you are an entomologist, you know!
Auuuuuuuugh!!!
Lol
Kerr's Idea was to create a bee that could thrive in the tropical weather in brazil. In that he succeeded, and the honey is actually of pretty good quality. But the bee was too agressive, so he quarentined them to make a more docile variant. One simple day a dumb worker opened the enclusure and let those killing machines fly away. Now they're our primary source of honey 🙃
If I recall the history, the originally selected (less aggressive) African bees were accidentally killed by insecticide treatment of the cargo, so things started going wrong (resorting to replacement unselected stock), before the accidental release
10 points for that pun. even though it was in the title, the info was so cool and informative that it made me forget.
Nice one, enjoyed 👍
Really? My apiary inspector has worked with several hives with just a vail on, only to get the morphology test back from the lab saying 90% or more Africanized genetics! Some hives are hot and some are not. They're great bees if you can keep them in the hive long enough.
I actually managed to buy some killer bee honey in the UK which comes from Zambia. Company called Mama Buci - honey's brilliant but apparently they have a high staff turnover :- )
Great job, Olivia!
Gotta throw the whole science out.
My beekeeper buddy says Africanized queens hatch one day earlier than the European Queen...that is why they have maintained their aggressive gene/behavior. Also, they can live where it is cold like European bees but their tendency to swarm at any time results in swarming too late in the season to develop enough honey at the new hive to survive the winter....
Apropos "escaping": Please do a video about the Myxomatosis disease next
Loved your Portuguese! 🇧🇷
That was very informative.
Very good Portuguese, Olivia!
When finally Brazilian science makes it to SciShow it's about an epic fail *sigh*
I was a "Bee" average student in school. My nickname was "honey"buns. My teachers tended to "drone" on, but I'm a hard" Worker" , I guess you could say I'm "hive minded." sometimes I would "bumble" my way around. I'm gonna "buzz off" now. "Killer" video, by the way.
So what I gathered from this video is that... Hufflepuffs are fierce! GO HUFFLEPUFFS!!!!
I'm allergic, but always calmly watch a new do her thing. Facinating that I could die from such a tiny thing.
Sounds like a plot of a typical zombie apocalypse book
this was really entertaining
Apparently they came directly across the carribean, from Venezuela. There have been 3 hurricanes in that ocean tract the past season, anyone of them could've swept the bees in. If you please notice, the eighteen vein intersection on the fore wing and the seventeen separate angles of the hamuli. Only one bee has that configuration, and it's the african killa bee.
SciShow, why does a highly carbonated drink hurt?
Go Africa! Nice of you to say we know how to watch our bees.
I've been working on a new kind of bee. It's a hybrid. I'm trying to see if having much more deadly venom will help increase honey production. Oh god I left the window open. Dammit!
Love the title. Another could be: Insects bee-having badly. Or bee-hiving. Your choice. :0)
They're exhibiting less extreme defensive *bee*-haviour.
The European honeybees should've built a wall.
oh no, please don't kill those bees eight tail! XD
"The Real Zom-bee Apocalypse"
Death-themed puns? Hmm. Well, you know, Dead Sullivan once introduced _The Zombeatles._
That video was so cool!
Olivia, when you started, I admit I was on the fence about you. I'm glad to say you're one of my favorite presenters now.
Great video, tks :)
I've been waiting for the killer need to arrive since the early 70s. I was terrified.
Haha, this is why it's okay to own a flamethrower in Southern states.
bees never get their honey
They come single and thrive!
OH
and one BIG
BIG POINT TO MAKE:
when you see a swarm of bees on your car or house:
CALL A BEEKEEPER NOT A EXTERMINATOR!
itll save you some money and possibly the colony
and another note: if you have a feral bee hive growing on your house or on your property and want it gone
AGAIN CALL A BEEKEEPER!
theyll happily take it or call a friend whos looking or a new hive
and you might get some of the honey they were storing because usually they collect a fuckton and they dont eat a lot of it unless its a cold climate
why did I get a notifcation saying this video was posted 30 minutes ago if I just watched it two days ago? o_0
very interesting video, thanks
What she said about 1000 stings killing you is (while a good median) bs. There hasn’t been good research on killer bee stings (to my knowledge). Some people not allergic can die from way fewer stings, or way more. Your reaction depends on a bunch of different variables and there just aren’t a lot of good studies on it.
You’re also more susceptible to the venom the more often you’re exposed to it.
It’s just... complicated
Halfway through the video I was like "Wow, glad there's none of those here". Then she said Puerto Rico
This blew my mind
I had no idea it was humans that created "killer bees".
So they're like the tracker jackers in the Hunger Games.
If you could create bees that attack people on command, you'd have a deadly bee-weapon!
Bees... My god...
