      Please put MMCX connectors on all your headphones.
      Edit: seriously, people can vote this down if they disagree, but I think I speak for everyone when I say I would gladly pay 50% more to have stock MMCX connectors.

    This was a really good discussion. There are so many headphones I have never heard and never will hear, so I can’t say for certain what the best value would be, but I’m inclined to agree with you that it would be the earphones that you get with your phone. You are right, there’s a huge difference between no music and music.

    Got my DT 1990 in the mail today. It almost as good as my Elex but in some ways it's superior and certainly more intimate. At first with the analytical pads it sounded overly bright with average bass but once you brain sorts out the frequencies it is simply fantastic. Detail for days and build wise it is a masterpiece of metal and leather/pleather.

    Great straight-talk break down. These tips should definitively help some folks to have a better experience as they begin this hobby. The only beef I have is dissing the $150-200 bracket outside of Massdrop offerings. PLENTY of excellent options there IMO, and it's where I started in this hobby. Just a few off the top of my head:
    - V-Moda XS (My first great sounding headphones. I still have them and still love them.)
    - PSB M4U-1 (Though older, they're still available and imo an excellent introduction to audiophile balance and performance.)
    - Audio Technica ATH-M50x (Not my personal taste but SO many devoted fans that they have to be on any list of great first headphones.)
    (I'd love to see others add to this list.)

    I'm like the $200-$500 range and I like to have headphones that do different tricks. I already have a good amp and I take advantage of warranties so I use Massdrop the most. These give me different sound signatures: HE 4XX, HD 6XX, Sundara, TR-X00 Ebony. That gives me everything from analytical to fun sounding but everyone has their preference.

    Thanks Joshua for the nicely put opinions. I really cannot argue with any of your comments. However, I would like to see a similar discussion for the amps and dacs. Usually, the information on amps, dacs or combined amp/dacs are very limited. I would love to hear your opinion on these hardware. Especially I would love hear what you think is an ideal combination for e.g. dt1990 or sennheisers without breaking the bank.

    Nice! Although I’d choose AKG K712Pro over DT1990 having lived with both for a bit and this is specifically with studio use here. The treble on AKG K712Pros are not spikey and tiring like DT1990 and the subbass on AKGs dig deeper with those large drivers if you have a good amp.

    A few months ago, I really went down the rabbit hole with headphones under $200. Spent lots of Saturdays in various local shops listening. Search ended as soon as I tried the Status CB-1 headphones. My use is enjoyment listening - no professional use. And while the CB-1s are marketed to studio pros, I've been very impressed by performance for the price.

    Dear Joshua, I am a music listener in Europe using the Sennheiser HD 598SR's. I bought these of Amazon for 140 euros a few years ago and in general I have been - and still am for that matter - very happy with these headphones. They are my first pair of 'audiophile' grade headphones. How do these stack up to the 580X's? Right now I am listening to these through my onboard ALC1220 audio, and I have been debating whether to get a decent amp/dac like the fiio E10k or Schiit fulla3 wondering if it would be worth the upgrade. I mostly use the headphones for gaming and listening to music (via spotify premium, so quality should be allright). What upgrade, if any, would make the most sense? I have heard that my current headphones are pretty decent for gaming, but the HD660S seems to take the crown in that department, according to my research that is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    PS since I live in Europe, DROP.com does not really seem viable for anything budget really, since there is a pretty hefty import fee.

  • @hifitommy
    @hifitommy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    josh, a quick shout out for the hifiman from Drop, the 4XXs @180. the comfort level is top-notch, if they start bearing down on your crown, just shift the headband forward on your noggin, the discomfort goes away for a long time.
    the sound quality is great, very natural. an announcer sounds like he is right in the room and on music they never have you paying attention to the sound, just the music. the bass is satisfying but doesn't dig as deep like loudspeakers like the Monolith 1060s ($250-300) but they don't cause you to miss that so much. they also work fine directly from my phone which fits in with the short cord included with them.
    i got MANY years of great sound out of my Grado sr60s that Corey Greenberg raved about so many years ago in Stereophile. i added to their comfort as soon as i got them with the yellow foam earpads for the Sennheiser hd414s.
    i hope this adds to your knowledge and may cause further investigation on your part.

    The $100 - 150 range is probably the best balance of value and performance.

  • @stephanrudolph
    @stephanrudolph 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First of all thank for your great reviews and perspective. Half a year ago I made tech upgrade and got the DT770pro 80Ohm - first thought, yeah sounds great definitively better than my QC35II, but I just didn't find them very comfortable. So 2 month ago I got the DT1990pro and was blown away (with some EQ). My wife was impressed after 10sec and also wanted some high-end HP, so I also got the the HD660s almost at the same price. The initial clamping force on both was am issue, but after a while the fact that both of these over-ears touch (press on) the ear was rather irritating. Sound wise the dt1990pro are in a different class than the HD660s. Comfort wise (after clamping got less) it is a tie, first I liked the dt1990pro better now the HD660s (lighter, more open). But two weeks ago I got the Arya Stealth .... And they exceed in every possible dimension (sound, comfort, price, ...) the dt1990pro - perfect upgrade. True over-ears, supreme comfort. With some EQ almost perfect sound and presentation.
    Best value? Are they worth it? - It depends on 4 things: How much can you afford? How much do you value good sound? How much do you value comfort? How much/often will you use them?
    For good sound, ok comfort and occasional listening the DT1990pro (or Sundaras) or probably the best option.
    BUT if you (like I) use headphones as your main audio source, then the Arya is a bargain IMHO. For the comfort alone. My $2000 speaker system can't touch them.
    I'd like to add, that this was actually the very last thing I upgraded to somewhat high-end - only because I couldn't imagine HOW big the difference actually is. I would have started with it ...

      Stephan your post is exactly the feedback I’ve been looking for. I have budget and want the best overall sound for music listening, and believe I have a good ear. Right now toying with the dt770’s and 1990 pros, 1990 pros easily win that battle, but curious about the lcd 2c’s, lcd-x and Arya’s. If any of those are that much better overall in the experience, I would much rather start with one of those than drop the coin on the 1990 pro only to find out the Arya/LCD was the “one” I really wanted all along for example. Did you try out any of the Audeze lcd’s? What does the Arya have that the DT1990 pro doesn’t and vice versa in your opinion? How are you liking the Arya and is it still your go to? Appreciate any feedback you can give. 🍻

    Great vid, problem is for my environment I need closed back headphones so a similar listing for closed back would be super useful for me.I still have this confusion where I want fun sounding but good quality I think I’m a u or v type person, it seems a straight forward question, where do I go after the Sony xm4 which I love but can now hear the flaws.Ido not want to be an audiophile in terms of following the curve and it seems super hard to find any review that’s caters for the average user who wants great sound but isn’t going to use in a studio and don’t care if they are reference perfection. I can’t be alone here.

      I'm in a similar situation I have brought out a 20 year old HD 600 that were mint. but I can hear everything around me. The DT 1770 seem well built but are they going to draw too much attention to themselves? I don't want to spend $680 CAD to find out I can't wear them for 2 hours in a row. I have picked up an Audio GD amp which sounds smooth and detailed but what would be a good closed back match???

    I always look at the best value as the headphones I got a good deal on. The HD58X are definitely a good deal as is the 6XX so they're in the list. In Canada, the HD600 series are expensive. I got a great deal on a pair of DT990 Pros ($169CDN = $131US) and HD598SR ($104CDN = $80US), these were great value. I think VE Monk earbuds are great value too, $14 and way better than Apple's version.

    Thanks for good advice.. I agree with you that USD250-350 price range is the highest possible best value bracket.. Any price bracket beyond that is no more relevant i.e. they are value brackets as the law of diminishing returns really kicks in..

    Hi Joshua, love you reviews.
    I few years back I would have agreed with you comments on value, but for the past few months I have lived with my 6xx powered by a Shitt Magnus. The pair has changed my musical experience for ever.
    Value for me is where do I go from this point. What’s the perfect mid high, I think I need to stay under 2k, in a pair of cans and what amp do I buy in addition. Does spending maybe 3k (if I need to) to go to a higher level represent value for me, yes it does. Would love your advice.

    My first headphones was the Audio Technica ATH-AD700, before the AD700x was released. I purchased it brand new for $99. This was the best value for me in terms of money spent and return. Return being quality and performance. My next purchase will be a Meze 99 Classics or Noir. After that, AKG 7xx for an open-back. Currently, I am using an ATH-AD700x. Retired the non-x version because I dented the left side.

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also got the ATH-AD700 in 2009, for $80 (and then due to a month of shipping errors, they gave me $20 back). Best soundstage for the cheapest price, amazing for gaming. Next, I bought a 2nd hand AKG Q701 for $200, it’s soundstage actually underperformed behind the AD700 until I got a proper amp for the AKG. With good amping, the AKG was like an AD700 +bass and a more well-rounded, more fun signature without giving up any of the AD700’s strengths. I do recommend the AKG as a good, natural upgrade over the AD700.
      After the Q701, I got a K712 Pro, then a K612 Pro, then I saved up and took the leap to the HD 800. This was a natural progression of upgrading the sound signature I liked, IMO, and the HD 800 was my Grail headphone.
      I still have the K612 and HD 800, but I’ve branched out to different sound signatures. At last count, I’ve accumulated 27 different headphones, plus some borrowed headphones.

    I had a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 1990 pro headphones, I found them very hard on my ears, mainly sibilant and a bit hard in the midranges, I kept them for a couple of weeks, though they might have needed to burn in, sadly things didn't change. I had to return them, I wish I could have kept them as they sound great otherwise. I have a pair of Grado SR325e phones which are also very nice. hey what ever happened to Grado? you don't see them reviewed much these days. I'm using a pair of Sundara's for my main headphones, lovely sound, have them for about a year now, no problems....highly recommended. Great video's Joshua...always worth watching

    Jeez! They are some of my all-time favourite headphones and you can get them for 20$ and it's so rare that I see mentions of them for "best value, best sound under 100$ or 300$ (depending on your taste), etc." And they're a real brand, unlike a lot of the brands on ebay and such. So thanks for that, dude.

    Quite agree with your comments.
    In my experience for example, I discover an important tip... the best headphone is a pair of heaphoned that don't need an amp.
    Of course if you want more, you can try with some more demanding headphones, but you'll need to spend more. I bought a pair of AKG 712 Pro for 198 €, I think it's a very valuable for money example but it's also a good example a pair of KZ ZS10 Pro X IEM that I also recently bought. Esaier to drive, nice and rich sound, confortable,...
    Another already mentioned headphones I probably will add to my collection in the future are the Koss Porta Pro.

      @@JoshuaValour Been watching your videos for a while now. If you have the time can you recommend a pair of good headphones for the PS5. Not for competitive games, because I almost exclusively play single player games. Mic isn’t needed either, that’s why I was thinking of using headphones. My budget is anything up to around $200, but would consider spending a little more if it meant a big jump in audio quality. I don’t want the hassle of trying to get a amp to pair with it either, so something easy enough for the Dualsense to drive. Anyways, I hope to hear back from you as I trust your judgment and it would be greatly appreciated.

    Excellent video as always. Let me add a "category" - closed back. Some of us just prefer them, but many need them. I play drums in a worship band and use closed backs instead of in-ear monitors. I currently use the Sennheiser HD 280Pro ($99). Good isolation, but so-so sound. Would love to find an affordable (under $300) step up. The Audeze LCD-XC are my favorites for personal listening, but they're over $1k. Best affordable option I've heard are the Emu Teaks ($500), but I've only seen them at RMAF and Massdrop. I put a lot of thought into this and think that the law of diminishing returns really kicks in at about the $300 point. The cost of DT880s, HD600, HD6xx. The HD6xx is probably the single best option among them, from a value point of view. After those one has to jump up to $500 and beyond for marginal improvements.

    Free headphones - The beater car your uncle gave you for free. It's a terrible car, it might break down, but it beats walking.
    $20 headphones - Econo-box base model. It's not glamorous, but it's in good shape and is dependable, can be fun.
    $150 headphones - Asian sedan. Also dependable, offers some nice creature comforts, but you aren't afraid to leave it on the street overnight.
    $350 headphones - German sedan. Very nice place to be, not going to turn heads, but it's a very comfortable way to proceed across the landscape.
    $1000 headphones - Italian sportscar. This is not your daily driver. It is very specialized and needs a special place to stay. Strangers ask you about and/or compliment it.
    $2000+ headphones - European hypercar. Performance is actually secondary at this level. Status symbol. Strangers ask questions about you rather than the car.

    Personally I would put the Grado Prestige series in the middle to low bracket. They essentially make the same model headphones but they only get better with build quality with price. That series ranges from around $80-$300. They have almost the same listening experience, but with higher price you'll get better wires, matched and de-stressed drivers etc. For example is say the SR125e is one of the best value listening headsets you can get at around $150.
