I live alone here in northwest Georgia and my kids are scattered in four states, so I would agree that food was a comfort. I have tried to speak to myself in Scripture-based affirmations, reading the Bible aloud, worshiping daily and praying daily has helped me get through the day by myself.

Also, those cheat foods are not really nourishing foods. Your mind may crave them, but your body doesn’t want them. Reward yourself with something else besides food.

My mom is definitely older than your mom (78), but she and her girl friends have found that they can meet at someone’s home, and sit out in the yard or garage and they call it ‘byof’ bring your own food. They each bring whatever food they want and they sit 6-8 feet apart, use their own lawn chairs and get to visit each other while eating their own special food that they like.
Your mom is great and I love hearing her story. Thank you for the update ladies.

Melissa, at Sam's Club one can buy 3 pound box of microwaveable: quick'n eat!, (fully cooked Charbroiled Angus choice) very tasty beef patties. Simply put them on the very large paper plate you'll be eating from, then microwave. 12 in a box, 4 ounces each. Thus, buy two boxes per week. Allows you to return to OMAD with one 48-hour fast. I know you're not supposed to walk and stand at a sink a lot with that surgery. I wish you a rapid recovery!

Loved hearing you both! I’m 69 soon to turn 70. I was strict Carnivore for 18 months then the lockdown happened. I did lose 82lbs in the 18 months. I’ve gained back back 13 lbs. I’m trying to get back to strict Carnivore and IF again. It’s so hard since I’ve been eating 2x a day and sugar free cookies and puddings during lockdown. My Type2 numbers during strict Carnivore got me into remission my Doc told me. My numbers have steadily been going up and I feel horrible! Your Mom has inspired me to go back to strict Carnivore. God Bless her on her healing journey And both of you on your weightloss ! 🤗🙏🏻

Hang in there, don't give in! During lockdown if I feel peckish, I get up out of the chair, even if it's just to walk around the room (though it's better if I DO something). There's a lot of getting up and sitting down going on but it helps a bit.

@nanabot, I'm almost 66 years old, and lost 60 lbs only to regain 20 during the lockdown. Was faithfully keto, but now ready to go full carnivore. I understand how bad it feels to have your numbers go up. The waistband on my jeans is cutting me in half where before it was comfortably loose. I know it's a setback, not a failure, and that we can turn it around. We've proven that to ourselves already. I would like to support you on your return to health. Congrats on your previous weight loss. 👍🏼

I’m one who cannot do one cheat and get back on it over night. My poor husband just doesn’t get it lol even keto “cheats” are hard for me to handle mentally. Carnivore I find the most peace. I’ve been allowing more keto things into my life and can tell my brain is wide awake always “needing” something.

Hi Laura! Please tell your mom to get an iron skillet to cook steaks on top the stove. I learned how to do this a few months ago and actually prefer this way over grilled. Preheat pan with some avocado oil in it, put in seasoned steak (love to hear that sizzle!) and cook it about 3-5 minutes. Put butter in pan during this cooking time and use a spoon to constantly baste your steak with the butter. Then flip it and continue basting while it cooks another 3-5 minutes. Let rest for several minutes then enjoy. Easy Peazy! FYI: I buy bulk steaks on sale and eat ribeye or t-bone every day and I’ve never gotten bored of it.

My adult son and I have meat loaf of the cheapest hamburger. It is a pound of meat,2 eggs, a cup of cheese and a shake of dried onions and a 1/4 cup of milk. I squish it really well and make a mound on a cookie sheet and bake it for 40 minutes. It is better than the meat loaf I used to make with carbs mixed in. Sometimes we make it with a pound and a half if my son is really hungry because we never have left overs.

Oh, gosh, it's not even funny how Melissa's story and my own are so similar!
If I'm doing my math correctly, we're pretty much the same age, about 2 years difference! I grew up in Indiana - Frankfort till almost the end of 6th grade, then Kokomo until college.
I was thin until my first child at 29 with whom I gained only about 20 lbs, but giving birth was a traumatic thing and it just seemed to trigger something in my body. I look at the pictures of the two of you and I looked like I could have been Laura's before picture and like I could have been her sister - same body shape and long blonde hair. And then, as I got older, I looked like you and could have been your sister.
Same medical history - first the thyroid, then I had high blood pressure (but not terrible) tossed in, then came the switch to the Hashimoto's diagnosis. I then had a complete tear of my rotator cuff (which is what it sounds and looks like you had) and they had to chisel a channel in the head of the humerus because I'm stubborn and waited too long and the tendon had shrunk and the ends wouldn't meet otherwise.
Not long after, the T2D diagnosis came and I was on Metformin and Byetta which had just been introduced. And earlier on, I'd suffered an injury to my knee and had three surgeries between both knees. I was early 40s at that point and was bone on bone in both and needed both replaced, but was too young for replacement. I had injections of synovial fluid in both knees 4 times a year.
After being diagnosed with my T2D, I immediately went low carb. I was lucky enough to have the world's best doctor and she listened to my plan of attack and my reasoning (and why I was refusing to attend the diabetic education classes. They were just beginning to get the idea of carb reduction and their idea of low carb was laughable! Something like 120 g per day! I cut mine to 50 and it was magic! ❤ The weight dropped off (who knew?) and my blood glucose dropped like a stone! My doctor put all of her T2D patients on a true low carb diet. Meanwhile, I kicked both medications and, like you, had my diagnosis of diabetes removed from my records!
Eventually, I hit a wall and switched to strict keto but it was really more ketovore. I wasn't really eating many veggies aside from romaine as a base for BLTs or on a burger or shredded on my taco bowl. And tomato - same reasons, plus. Can you grow up in Indiana and not love tomatoes? I also ate onions, garlic, scallions. Occasionally zucchini, broccoli and the ubiquitous cauliflower - and less and less of those with time. I occasionally get a thing for green beans. But I mostly eat meat and cheese.
Whew! I hope Melissa sees this and doesn't think I'm weird or stalkerish! I was just struck by how many parallels there were!
    Great job, Melissa!
Edit to add: OMGosh! I was watching them out if order and just started watching an older one and yep! Rotator cuff surgery, totally messed up. I'm not sure where you are now, but I hope things are better. I heard almost the same words, but I haven't needed further surgery on it. It's holding up! Fingers crossed for you.
Edit again! LOL I, too, am a cheese-a-holiday and have an entire shelf in my fridge plus an acrylic bin full of cheese! Oh, and one of the door shelves! 🤣🤣🤣 I hate to admit it, but there were times I made an entire meal of snacking on cheese because I didn't feel like cooking! I eat two meals a day.

I did Keto for awhile and lost 15 pounds, got off and gained it back, then lost it again. The scale is not my friend, so I don’t get on it very often anymore because every time I do and I’ve lost a few pounds, I “reward” myself, then weigh the next day and I’ve gained 2 or 3 pounds, then get depressed! Vicious cycle! I do feel better after only eating one meal a day though. I’m 67 and have high blood pressure and diabetes, which my blood sugars are over 7. My doctor is threatening me with insulin shots, which I have been fighting to not get them. I have to go back for another A1c blood test in October. So guess I better get busy. So proud of your Mom for getting herself healthy. Very encouraging to me, that’s for sure! I needed this video! Thank you. I will re-watch it to keep myself motivated.

Laura, tell your Mom about Reverse Searing. I did not know how to cook a piece of meat either. I bought this 12 dollar thermometer on Amazon after looking at a video on line. You bake your steak basically and it comes out juicy, brown and delicious! You can set the temperature you want your steak to be. Part of the thermometer goes IN the oven. So cool. You are such a sweet family. Thank you for all the sharing!

    Thank you both!
Melissa, I want to share a little of my recovery after a foot fracture 9 years ago, at age 55. At the time I was about 25 pounds overweight. The worst part for me was lack of leg muscles to get on and off the toilet. Omg I wanted to cry!! My quads were so weak. Never imagined how hard that would be on one leg.
I had crutches to use outside, and managed the stairs on my bum, but navigating the kitchen, cooking, dishes, was exhausting. After the first few days I rented a wheelchair to give myself a break when I was downstairs. It was only a fracture so I only needed to be off my foot for 8 weeks, but I was wishing I'd had strong leg muscles going into it. Leg strength. Am I strong now? Heck no. Lots of other health issues, but I'm now doing some leg lifts and squats.
So, my advice is to rent a wheelchair or one of those knee scooters. Best wishes for an easy surgery and speedy recovery!!

Diana VP I sitting walker would work as well. I remember when my mom had a compound fracture of her left leg. She would put her meal on the walker and walk over to her chair then eat. Managing the stairs on your bum was a I suggestion I gave her especially when she wanted to sleep in her own bed instead of the living room pull out couch bed.

I had trouble sticking with keto too. I surprisingly find carnivore much easier to stick too especially since I gave up sweeteners. It took me a few months to give up the sweeteners in my drinks but it does help with the cravings to give it up. Just keep moving forward and no matter how many times you fail, keep trying.

I have find it helpful to find a path of keto that allows me to feel satiated and enjoy my food as well. I think finding a way of eating that doesn't make you feel deprived is really key when trying to stick to a way of eating. If you try and do a version of keto that you see someone else doing, that may not work for you since you have different likes and dislikes and your taste buds are different! Keto has made me feel better than I ever thought possible and I now weight less than I did when I was 16. You gotta find something that makes you feel good and happy! I hope you find your way! 💞

Hi Laura ! Your mom is a couple years younger than me. We pretty much have the same issues. Carnivore has gotten rid of my joint pain. I too struggle with occasional non carnivore foods. We live on a lake and have people over at least 4 times a week. We cook meat, they bring sides... uggg... makes it hard. A bite here a bite there... soon I am up 10 pounds. It takes only a bite to cause weight gain for us . Some times I swear it only takes a sniff. I’m going to get out Jason Fungs book to remind me of the fasts and one meal a day . This was very encouraging. I appreciate your mom coming on here to talk about her struggles and victories. I will keep her in my prayers.

Love you both - and boy do I feel like your mother is so much like me. I had a few problems and gained 80 pounds. Like both of you I have done so many things and can't lose a pound. I have hashimotos - I have hypothyroidism - I'm diabetic. I have had two knee surgeries. I'm so upset I don't know what to do. I was ready to do carnivore - and someone on another you tube channel told me it caused him real problems. I am concerned about my cholesterol. How has that gone with you mom? Thank you for you help - and your mom is someone I would love to help having her surgery. I can relate because I broke my patella tibia. More not being able to more. Prayers to both of you. Good Luck with your surgery.

Your mum is in my thoughts and prayers 🙏🏻 And can I add you look incredible at 63 years young, really great genes 💃 😍I am so glad I watched this twice as I have just started Carnivore and am experiencing craving nuts 🥜!!! I did Paleo then Keto 3 years ago and it was great 👍 however I soon found that I was very sensitive to the sauces and vegetables and processed Keto-friendly foods. It wasn't until I found carnivore that my interest was piqued, and started over a week ago. I feel so much better.

Love these updates with your Mom! For one thing, we are closer in age (I will be 63 in October), so we have a lot in common. Sending love and prayers for her, not only during the surgery and recovery process, but also that she will keep that solid determination to do what is best for her health and stay away from carbs, no matter how tempting. I highly recommend keeping a simple journal, if she’s not already doing so, of everything you’re eating, and doing, and whatever emotions you’re feeling, throughout the journey because it’s great to go back and reflect sometimes. God bless you both! ❤️

Good luck with your ankle surgery! You’re going to do great! That ankle is nothing compared to your shoulder! I’m 62 and I found a George Foreman Grill on Facebook Marketplace for $25. I put it on the patio and make my steaks outside. Mama! YOU can make your own steak! 😍 Your daughter taught me! 😉 I live in St Louis. Our weather is pretty much the same as Indiana. I didn’t like the way my house smelled like meat. That’s when I got the idea for the electric grill outside, and top my steak w ghee that I make from butter. I grill outside year round. love Carnivore! Thanks girls for your inspiration, tips and tricks!

@@LauraSpath loving daughter, don't forget the year-round matching outside umbrella, long outdoor extension cord to outdoor outlet, and flat-surface electric grill (non-fat draining style) so mother can grill beef burgers outside everyday! Or she can switch to using the broiler in s kitchen oven if medium smell isn't an annoyance.

  • @teller007

For steaks you do not necessarily need a grill. You can place on top rack in oven on HI broil. Just keep oven door cracked open and flip steak half way. Very quick.

I have recently discovered it’s really easy to do a steak in a frying pan. ESP I’d you like rare. Heat up skillet with a little bacon grease. Season steak as desired. When Pan is hot, put steak in and i time it 4 min, which has first side browned. I flip it and for me second side about 4 min, then out on plate to rest a few minutes. I like Costco NY steaks, but do rib steak too. Best luck on the ankle surgery.

Melissa, throw your salted ribeye steak in the airfryer for 8 minutes @400. Or chuck roast in a sous vide then sear in cast iron skillet. Hope your ankle surgery went well. I have a new hip. I'm 68 and have 70ish lbs more to go. Very slow for us older ladies. Btw, nuts seriously hurt me too. We deserve to be pain free. Thanks for your videos. Onward and upward!

A great discovery of EASY meat for variety is roasting a boneless pork butt/shoulder. (It's good with the bone in too but lots harder to carve.) Just season it really well. Rub with fat all over. Put on a rack over a shallow baking pan. I did a 7 # pork butt at 275 degrees for 5 hours and it was FABULOUS! Nice crust, tender, juicy and full of great flavor---and about 5 minutes of my time to make it. If I had cooked it longer, it might have fallen apart, but at 5 hours at 275 it sliced like a dream. SO GOOD! And it made several meals. :)
